The 308 is actually the best cartridge and here's why. So you're using the same in both 180 grain Silver Tip Winchester. Now with the 30-06 shoot three shots through it and then grab ahold of the barrel. You will burn your hand now to five rounds through the 308 I'm driving the barrel. You'll be able to grab it and still hold on to it what does that mean it means the 30-06 heats up too quickly and your bullets going to be all over the place. And with that heated up your bullets going to drop real quick. Also if it hits some played in grass it's going to Veer off. Now with the 308 it's still going to keep shooting straight. It's not going to drop because of the Heat still have just about the same amount of punch as the other. The 308 is straighter and flatter shooting. It's like the 270. All around gun to 270 is excellent because of how straight it shoots and how flat it shoots. The 308 also was the most preferred rifle Horseneck for back in Vietnam and other Wars versus the 30-06 even though both were used throughout those times. They prefer the 308 more.

To say the 30-06 has a fierce fan base is putting it mildly. I don't think I'll ever see the 30-06 go obsolete in my lifetime, but even if it does I can handload for it until my days on this earth are over.
The 30/06 will never go away in PA. I have my Grandpa's Springfield and take it out at least once a year and it still works great. Brings back memories hunting with a truly great man.
Oddly enough.. Pa born and raised. I've never owned one, or even fired one lol. I'm lucky enough to own various different calibers, .223's, .243 win, 6.5x55's, 264 win mag, .270 win, 6.8spc, .280 rem, 7x57 mauser, 7 mag, 300wsm, 308 win, 325wsm, etc etc. Still no 30-06. If i were to ever own one though, it would be a Garand
Whenever a guy starts telling me about how I should switch from 30-06, it's usually the kind of guy who puts an orange slice in his beer and insists I should try it too.
LOL This Ron is a clown. This is not the first time he's misleading people and speaking fallacies. Like his video about bears "I think", "Maybe", etc... *He PRETENDS to know, but the truth is that he does NOT.* Thumbs down for this guy for as long as he'll post on RUclips.
@@DiabloOutdoors Yes, I've found that successful youtube/tiktok channels depend more on the person's voice, looks, or controversy rather than the quality of content. There's a very popular history channel where most of their videos are factually wrong.
It will never be obsolete as long as long guns exist. The oxford dictionary defines obsolete as no longer being produced or used. In 2023 it ranked #9 among the most sold caliber rifles in the US. It was ahead of the 300 Win Mag, 7-08, 243, and several other well known cartridges. It's not going anywhere for a long, long time.
I agree. This guy is a clown and not the first time he speaks fallacies and obviously doesn't know much about hunting and the outdoors. He's a clownesque RUclipsr
@@DiabloOutdoorspretty rude talking about a guys has had as many experience’s as Ron. Hunting and outdoor writing has been his life for around 50 years or so.. he had hunted more game then most of us ever will. I like the 30-06 and he is talking it up here.. it is a great cartridge. And if you watched the video you would realize that in the end he says he was teasing and that every cartridge eventually becomes extinct. It got people click on the video.
Like so many others I do love the 30-06 the 270 and the 308. The competition between them has been on the same footing as the Ford and the Chevy. Enjoy which ever one you have. They are all great.
My buddy is just getting into hunting. He wanted to buy his first rifle that could take anything from coyote to Moose, pretty much the spread of any big game in our area (Southern BC). I told him 30-06, and that's what he got! 😁
I upgraded from my dad’s 30-30 this year. 30-06 was an easy choice for my budget. Lots of options and I can hunt anything. Reach out a lot further then the 30-30 as well
I could write a book on why the 30-06 is superior to all these new gimmick cartridges. I probably should. It is still superior for most big game save the largest african game, and won't be seriously challenged anytime soon. It has the perfect recipe of caliber, bullet weight and momentum, good bc's, easy to shoot moderate recoil, reasonably flat trajectory out to 500 yards, and can be loaded well with tons of different powders as well as being a great host for bp and cast lead because of the larger case capacity and ability shoot 220 grain lead RN bullets well. The case life for reloading is 2-3x as good as any of the newer cartridges out there, i'm on 27 reloads (yes.. 27) for some nosler brass, finger annealing every 4th round or so and expect ≈15 more loads from that batch of brass. The barrel life is extremely high because it is generally loaded to reletively lower pressures. The moderate velocities match up to perfect on-game bullet performance for most types and brands of bullets. The noise level from a 22'' barrel is moderate compared to magnums. It is still the number one recommended cartridge by the Alaskan dept of fish and game for hunting everything in alsaka... And is generally the number one recomended cartridge by outfitters for everything from mule deer to moose across the west, new england and Alaska... Yada, yada... 30-06 is going no where... The gun and ammo companies want it to go away, they would love to force you into some new rifles, new ammo and new reloading equipment by making the ammo expensive or scarce etc... but it will just make the ammo and gun companies obsolete. Even Bear Creek Arsenal just came out with a new AR platform rifle in 30-06 and 270 win. They can see the writing on the wall... Remington, winchester, vista outdoors, etc better think twice about trying to pressure hunters away from the 308, 270, and 30-06... They are not even close to the only game in town anymore...
@curly_3 ---> Bingo! Excellent points. The book titled: "One Man, One Rifle, One Land" by J.Y. Jones is about him taking every game animal from Mexico to Canada with a .30-06 Springfield cartridge / rifle.
33 year old here, my x-bolt in 30-06 with sig elite hunter factory ammo uses a 165gr. Sierra TGK bullet, with a claimed B.C. of .531 and a chronographed velocity of 2975 out of my rifle, I can repeatedly smack the 10" plate at a true 1000 yards at my local range. I was never a 30-06 fan until I owned one.
I'm 63 and I love the old 30-06. I remember when I was very young my Dad got his Remington Pump Action in the late 60's or early 70's. I got it after he passed. I remember him using the old Remington 55 gr Accelerator round on Coyotes. I wish they still made that round.
I re fell in love with my 30-06 last summer in South Africa, where it harvested Zebra, Nyala, Kudu, Gemsbuck, Sable, Wildebeest with 180gn Nozler Partitions. Man what a killing machine it was.
I am 60. Have been a user in fan of the 36 for 30 years. The advances in bullet design and technology have greatly benefited this old cartridge. Other cartridges may be better at individual tasks, but nothing can match the old war-horse’s versatility.
The 06 will be a viable and extremely useful and effective cartridge until we stop shooting projectile type ammunition. My opinion and I’m sticking to it
The 30-06 was originally a US Military cartridge, so its max pressure was set to be conservative, even in 1906. It was expected to be used in harsh conditions and well-used weapons with somewhat inconsistent ammo. They built in a significant safety margin. Even almost half a century later, the military-based 308 set only a couple thousand psi higher for the same reasons. The 270 was designed well after the 30-06 and was a hunting cartridge, so pressures were pushed a bit. It tuned out the 270's chamber pressure was pushed up more than realized. There is also a strange artifact of the "copper crusher" pressure testing method used at the time that under-reports pressures in some instances. When it was developed, the 270 registered only 4% higher pressure than the 30-06 using the old method (52,000 cup vs 50,000 cup). When the more accurate piezoelectric pressure transducers were used, the actual increase turned out to be over 8% (65,000 psi vs 60,000 psi).
@@jerrykemphfer9436 The 270 has more pressure. It turns out that the increase over the 30-06 is more than its creators realized. This is because of a glitch in the old test method.
With my browning bar 30-06 in my hands, every big game animal I have taken takes an instant dirt bath with sig sauer 165 grain elite hunter controlled expansion tips. One hell of a cartridge.
I think I will open a "retirement home" for all the old 30-06 rifles and ammo. They will all be kept clean and get "exercised" enough to keep them limber. They will also get taken on frequent nature walks. 😉
@@jgrenwod Can I come by and take a few out for a nature walk? I am sure there are some old 742s and 760s that need to stretch their legs and work a few kinks out.😖

Ron has forgot more about ammo and rifles than most of the people on this video. As far as the title goes, it’s called sarcasm. Younger folks don’t understand this. I will continue to watch and appreciate every video Ron puts up!! Cheers Ron!!! Thanks brother!!!!!
How do you think that 220 grain Silver Tip would deal with heavy brown bear or Grizzly? I know this subject is probably beat to death but I just want a big game hunters opinion. I mean a charging bear by the way.
Back in the 1990's, I had a Winchester M-70 30-06. I zeroed it in with 165 gr Trophy Bonded Bullets that Federal loaded then. I then went out to 200 yards and shot a group. I hit all my bullets about 1.5 inches above the point of aim, and the group size for all five shots came out to 1.35 inches. Not bad at all. Since I was moving to Alaska for work, I wanted a 06. I shot several caribou Black Tail Deer and a couple of moose with it, but I also had other rifles. No matter where in the state I went, every store I went to would have some ammo, and 30-06 was always on the shelf in some form. Usually 165 or 180 loads. These days, I shoot a 7mm RM, which is nothing more than a flatter shooting 30-06. My only regret was not having Mel Forbes make a Model 24 in 30-06 for me. He passed on a few days ago. Wilson Combat bought NULA, and well, let's just say I am not a fan of the "improvements". As for guns and shooting in general on the political front we are doing pretty good with the beat back. I am betting that GCA-68 is going to get overturned and the NFA is going to get scaled back. Time will tell.
I absolutely love my '03 Springfield. Always wanted one since I was a kid be cause my uncle would take one hunting with us ever time we went. His was sporterized, but it is every bit as accurate as people say they are. Truly a riflemans rifle.
One good point about the 3006 ...it doesn't jam as much as the .308 because of its long neck feeding into the chamber more smoothly! This is even more readily noticed when speed feeding a single round into a bolt action's chamber! Also, are so many different loads, i.e., bullet weights and powders than probably any other caliber!
Ha ha, love the title. Just bought my 5th Tikka T3x 30-06 3 hours ago. Shipping tomorrow. They have joined my recently built Rem700 with a Brux barrel in 30-06. But honestly, the plan is to take every Tikka to the range with a plethora of factory ammo and a few of my handloads. I'll keep 2-3 in factory configuration depending on how they shoot and compare to each other. The rest will all be rebarreled to 280AI

I just inherited my Dad's Remington 700 ADL in 30-06 he bought years ago for an elk hunt. He took a bull elk near Spanish Peaks in Colorado that took a day to butcher and back out to his 4x4. Looking forward to reloading for it and heading to the range!
The idea that "every cartridge goes obsolete eventually" flies in the face of the 45-70 he mentioned at the beginning. We still have plenty of cartridges with us that began with the inception of the metal cartridge. I tend to agree with Mr Spomer in theory, but we haven't seen that play out yet in reality.
You didn't fool me. I KNEW you would not be poo pooing the 30-06. (I was only worried a little lol) My favorite and most accurate rifle I ever owned was a 30-06 in a Browning 1885. I don't hunt open areas much (New Hampshire woods mostly) but I wanted a field/power line rifle for those few times I found myself there in deer season. My Falling block Browning would consistently clover leaf 3 shots at 100 yds off the bench, using Factory loads. (Fed Premium 180 grain) which was good enough for this old timer. Of course the 26 inch (or was it 28? Can't remember now) barrel was a plus, along with shorter overall length than bolt action rifles. Thanks again for the video. Keep up the great work.
Back when I was loading for a old British 303 I found the Norma brass, as you measured for 30-06 was the best fitting. This was critical to accuracy as the MK4 303 had a LOOSE chamber. Got .27 10 shot groups with that Norma brass!
I love your podcast, but I believe it will be at least another generation before the 30-06 fades away. The 06 will do anything you need it to do. There are millions of 06's in service. Love you show, and your wisdom!!
Same was said about the 30-06 by people like you, nothing changed there’s always someone saying it. It’s mostly correct as most cartridges introduced do fall to the wayside, but your not omnipotent your just a clown.
As far as the 6.5 Creedmoor is concerned, except for wind drift, which you can compensate for, and drop, which is easier to compensate for, the .30-'06 with heavier bullets can be driven to retain energies of 1500 foot pounds out past 800 yards. The Creedmoor can't touch it.
I went the 1903 springfield mine was made in 1930. Best rifle I have ever owned! If I ever get my dream brown bear hunt I will use the old girl for sure!!!
Hi Ron. I recently moved to Colorado from Wisconsin. I have a savage 111 in 30-06 that I got back when I started hunting whitetail in Wisconsin. I’m looking for a bullet recommendation for stepping up to elk hunting in Colorado. Thank you love your show and podcast. Keep up the good work.
Hey Ron, I’ll help you with some ideas for getting out of the old rut of gunwriters: comparing calibers. It has to be the most mundane and irrelevant topic to obsess over, with people agonizing about minute details that don’t end up mattering in the real world. So instead, how about taking a hint from the shotgun and archery worlds and talk about technique? About gun fit? About things like eye dominance? About gun care and repair? Teach people to be able to do more with what they already have. That doesn’t sell new stuff and unnecessary gear, but it is what people want. I’ll send you the bill for these ideas later.
Odd 6 in Alaska was like SOP for most hunters in the old days , my days, I had one for decades and passed it down. Everyone keeps brass for reloads too. I switched to a 338 mag Browning auto because of my glaucoma eyes and because of - I was used to being a right handed bolt guy, who wanted/needed to switch to either eye. Thanks for the Debate.!
Got an 06 for my fifteenth Christmas. Still have it. And two more. Fifty years later, it is the caliber I grab for big game. Obsolete? Not as long as I have dies.
Wrorng, it will never go out of fashion based upon knock down power, shootability, recoil, availability, price, credible history and bullet weight choice.
13:05 you don’t have to imagine, the SAMMI drawings have the rim dimension as .473 -.010. There is not a plus in the tolerance, therefore, the .473 is a do not exceed number. Acceptable dimensions are from .463-.473. So, if I were the tool and die guy, I’d be shooting not for .473, but for .468, probably, not knowing much about the thermal properties of cartridge brass and making dies for drawing brass. Come to think of it, the finished cartridges probably grow in dimensions as the die wears, so maybe start smaller to avoid having to replace dies more often?
Got my first .30/06 in a Remington M700 ADL Christmas '67. Reloading and getting consistent 1.25-in groups and less with a Weaver K3 crosshair 'scope at 100-yards sometimes even brought in 0.75-in 3-shot groups with 110-gr Speer spitzer of the late '60s and 56-gr IMR 4350. Loaded many other slugs to good velocity, mostly 165 to 180-gr spitzers, as well as reduced loads with the 110-gr round nose .30 carbine slugs and 20grains of IMR 4227. The .30/06 with a 1-10 rifling twist handled them all. Have another .30/06 as well: H&R Mauser bolt from the early 1980s with its easy loading and sure feeding remains great. It is just a well-balanced cartridge, and very well-proven.
OK, I’ve run into SEVERAL RUclips videos now, trying to encourage me to abandon the .30-06. No! Sorry (not sorry), but it looks like there’s a media agenda against the .30-06, for some reason. Not going to happen! The .30-06 will be around long after we are all gone.
35 yrs ago I decided to go with the 30-06 when I bought my first hunting rifle because of how versatile the round is. As stated, a huge range of game and applications for the round. I’ve taken deer and elk with it and every time it put them down virtually in their tracks. No need for a different hunting rifle for me.
So long as I am looking down on the grass instead of up the aught 6 is getting used. It may not be the very best at any one particular thing, but it has a load for any job, and I like that
The 30-06 is the one gun. It's an antique. It's a relic drop a 190 Grand accubond on top of it. Comparing it to any wonder bullet of today and see what happens.
I get 2750 fps out of it with no signs of exeess pressure. This translates to 1490 foot pounds of energy at 900 yards. Wind drift is not ideal, and the trajectory is beginning to look like a rainbow. If you learn to shoot it, it delivers more than one would expect.

The longest shot I've ever shot a buck with was 440 yd. Ironically, I used a 270 WSM. I held 16" over his back, and dropped it into his heart. That's about 30 BIG BUCKS, many Record book bucks. -- I don't see the hype to LONG RANGE SHOOTING. Most bucks I take are under 100 yards. They can't tell the difference in the exit hole. @jwdundon I've only done this from a bench. I'm not good enough to shoot game at distances much over 300 yards, maybe under ideal conditions 400, but this bullet expands and holds together in wet paper at 900.

It rocked you pretty good because it had a crescent butt plate on it. Iona M1 grand. And also a mountain ascent Kimber in 30-06. I reload 150 grain Nosler partitions and 180 grain Nosler partitions. And all depends on what game I’m wanting. Them all bullets do a lot better than them fancy ones. I get 3000 feet a second out of 150s. With 24 inch barrel.
lots of us old guys own and use them. My son just bought one two. His deer rifle is a .243 I bought him for graduating elementary school. He got invited for a northern Moose hunt and figured his grandpas 303 might not be up to the task, since they were canoe hunting and might have long shots across the bay. Lovely Ruger American II he ended up with. Look, we handloaders have been loading it upwards in pressure for years. Clay
I never thought I'd see the day when the 30-06 would go extinct. It's the cartridge that fought (and won) three wars. Letting it go extinct is woke. Need I sat more?
Hey Ron, my long-awaited Winchester Model 70 Super Grade French Walnut Rifle - 30-06 Springfield, 24" Barrel arrived yesterday! You may be wondering why. Because the 30-06 will reign even after our great grandchildren's generation.
Thank you for explaining the differences and similarities between the .o6 and 7mm Mauser. My love of Mausers started in 1974 when I purchased a 1909 Argentine 7MM Mauser sportified by Interarms of Virginia, chambered for 30.06. Although my eyes don't work as well as they used to, I'm still using open iron sights. Until this podcast I wasn't aware that the 30-.06 was a knock-off of a Mauser. I also have a 1925 Spanish 7MM that was a sweetheart for starting my son's out deer hunting. For whitetail deer, I use a 150 grain factory load and have had great success. Should I get lucky enough to win a draw in Wyoming for elk, I plan on using 180 grain factory loads.
As a 60 year old swede. I would say,the 30 aught six will never be obsolete. It is the allround caliber of all allrounders. I have used it for all of my hunting life. And as a reloader i found it does everything between squirrel and moose. As a champion. Fantastic całiber.
Ron, I think you bumped your damn head or you’ve been taking Biden lessons! Every hunter I know owns a 30-06 and it’s the most popular big game cartridge ever!
I like the numbers from premium factory loads and handloads out of .30-06. Even the old stodgy seeming, cheap, 180 grain garden variety, near cave man, ammo flattens game so well it's ridiculous.
There are more 30-06/chambered rifles and owners in my state than mosquitoes. It’ll still be here long after you and I are both long gone.

The idea that "every cartridge goes obsolete eventually" flies in the face of the 45-70 he mentioned at the beginning. You didn't fool me. I KNEW you would not be poo pooing the 30-06. (I was only worried a little lol) My favorite and most accurate rifle I ever owned was a 30-06 in a Browning 1885. My Falling block Browning would consistently clover leaf 3 shots at 100 yds off the bench, using Factory loads. (Fed Premium 180 grain) which was good enough for this old timer.

"So why did I start this by saying it was going obsolete?" I think the term for that is "clickbait".
The tactic has existed long before the internet. It's called a headline.
The title prompted me to watch a very informative program that proved the title wrong...uh.
@@joelpeterson8424 How nice for you.
lots of us old guys own and use them.
I remember a 3006 sabot loaded with a 55 grain bullet. I may even have a few of those in my storage.
I highly doubt it . I can see the magnums like the 300 win mag and 7 mag going “ obsolete “ long before the 30-06 .
.3006 will always take care of my big game hunting needs!
The correct name is 30 cal 1906!
@thomashalsell8736 What matters is that it does job
Dead is still dead
I listen to Ron every day no matter the title, and learn.
Ron is running out of New content and that is why he is doing these silly, pointless pod casts.
Hey Ron, my long-awaited Winchester Model 70 Super Grade French Walnut Rifle - 30-06 Springfield, 24" Barrel arrived yesterday! You may be wondering why. Because the 30-06 will reign even after our great grandchildren's generation.
What a fine, classic hunting rifle! Congrats. Enjoy.
168gr 3006 is medicine for bull elk n moose
Blasphemy! Never...
As a 60 year old swede. I would say,the 30 aught six will never be obsolete. It is the allround caliber
of all allrounders.
He was being sarcastic!
I like the numbers from premium factory loads and handloads out of .30-06. Even the old stodgy seeming, cheap, 180 grain garden variety, near cave man, ammo flattens game so well it's ridiculous.
