At one time our entire deer camp (9 of us) were running rem model 7600s in 3006;with one guy running a 742. I see more 7600s and 742s in the northern Wisconsin deer woods than any other gun. Though my cousins and I do bring out the ARs in the right situations... There is something nostalgic about those old Remington's. Loved this video!
Greetings from Ontario, There are countless 742's used here in Ontario. There are many wives tail type stories about 742's jamming, I have often wondered how much truth there is in the claims. I use a pump 308... A great video, so sad to have seen the demise of Remington.
@@danlindeke2561 not a thing wrong with these see thrus. I have at least three rifles with the and one of them is my Woodsmaster. Under given situations they are extremely useful I.e. on a drive as a stander the dawgs, human walkers,, rustle up a herd of deer and one of them rises up maybe 15 to 20 yards in front of you and he’s doing a moderate trot that is a bit too close for your scope depending on the magnification. See thru scope mounts will stay on my rifles
Nice shooting. The Remington 742 was dubbed the Jam O Matic . A lot of the negativity was due to lack of proper maintenance and cleaning. I love mine in 308. It's going to hit the Deer woods this November. Mine likes Factory Remington Core Lok 150 SP. I mainly hunt Creek/ River bottoms and the Black Hills of South Dakota. If I'm hunting the open prairie I use my Remington 700 in 270 or my Winchester model 70 in 270. I shot my first Whitetail in Cumberland county in Maine 1980 near Brunswick.
Enjoyed much. I have 742 but didn't reload mainly used old Remington Core lokts. Always did the job on deer and was accurate. Put them down good. Great rifle. Thanks again
My stepdad gave me one when I was 16 yrs old. The gun is & always has been extremely reliable & accurate as long as it digested factory Remington ammunition. Well that didn't sit well with the old man because he reloaded everything & it took a few hundred rounds to get my rifle to digest reloaded ammo accurately & reliably. When seating the bullet, when he left a little of the crimping marks on the Sierra 165gr BTHP exposed a little it turned out to be the most accurate rifle out of everything in the cabinet. I know he was a big fan of Hercules powder but can't for the life of me remember how many grains he used in his reloads for my rifle. My health has declined & no children so I guess it's time to let everything go to someone who will appreciate as much as I have for so long
Sometimes it's just a matter of finding the right recipe for your particular rifle. Looks like your stepfather was an accomplished reloader. There are lots of folks that consider the Remington Woodsmaster an inaccurate rifle. I wonder if they ever tried different loadings to see what would shoot well out of their rifles?!?
I bought a rifle exactly like the one you're shooting in this video in 1975 and have used it for 30 years. My dad was a WW-2 vet and he bought a Remington Model 740 after the war and took deer and Antelope all over the country when I was young the 740 was before the 742 model. Great gun and my son will inherit both of these Remington's when I pass. About 10 years ago we went on a Sika deer hunt in Texas at the YO Ranch, and I took one with my father's 740 and my son took one with my 742. What great lifelong memories these 2 rifles hold in our family.
Two for today, you’re on a roll. I haven’t reloaded 30-06 or 308 in several years, but 4064 was my go to powder back then and I believe you’re using the same Hornady manual that I use. Keep ‘em coming. Looks like you got a little snow there. I went dove hunting today for the first time since my cataract surgery. It was a beautiful day here in Virginia. What made my day was, the first dove was reduced to a puff of feathers. It feels good to be back in the game.

Elevated scope rings are your friend if you hunt close range exclusively, especially in the thick tangle. Great for checking the headgear and if the fog and moisture gets to your glass, then option two is to look beneath the scope.
I have owned two 742 Woodsmasters, both in .30-06 and both set up with see through scope mounts for alternative use of the iron sights. I now own a 7400 in the same configuration, and sighted in at 100 yards. It is my go to Midwestern whitetail buck buster. You question the wisdom of see through mounts for both iron sights and scope usage. Most of the deer I've taken since my first one back in 1967, have been closer to fifty than 100 yards. Some even inside of twenty to twenty-five yards, through woods cover of some kind, making access to the iron sights a valuable choice to be able to make. I have also shot them out to well over 200 yards, with the scope, through fairly open range. Pulling off such a shot these days without a scope is not something I'm all that eager to have to try, in the split second I'm likely to have a shot at a buck, before he decides to take off. That being said, I guess I disagree with your position and comments on mounting scopes, with the option of using iron sights in addition to the scope. Particularly, given the all too possible likelihood and varying distances at which the respective situations mentioned sooner or later can, and probably will present themselves.
My father reloaded 20 rounds using 46 grains 4064 with Hornady spire points. Using a 742 woods master from the early 70s that he gave to me with the reloads. It's been one round used per deer. I bought my 742 in 1972 while in the US air force. This rifle has knocked it's share of white tail in the North East and in the Maritimes of Canada. It's always been dependable with good ammo. Remington green and yellow box 180 grain for dense woods or Federal 165 BT for long range shooting. Bad ammo gives you bad shots. Otherwise this gun is a tack driver even with the hooped scope mounts that I had to use when snow fell from a tree blocking my sight picture in my scope. thank for the video
Ramshot Big Game 54 grs with a Hornady 165gr SST is a great load in 30-06 as well. 2750 fps. Very clean burning powder. Local gun shop has one of those in 280 Remington, might have to pick one up.
Tom…I bought a Remington Woodsmaster 742 in the BDL series in 308 in the Left hand configuration.. in 1979.. the BDL series had the the basket weave checkering or wood stamping. I picked up at a gun shop in Traverse city ,Michigan in my mid 20s and now at 70 ,I haven’t used it in 20 yrs. I bought it for cedar swamp and heavy cover deer drives..Whatta great rifle for fast shooting in heavy cover . I never put a scope on the rifle as most shots where under 40yds and shooting running deer required fast sight recognition of open sights…These days at a older age I do box blind hunting and use my 270 LH Remington 700 for that type of hunting…great video of a great woods rifle..and I have to agree with you the see thru scope mounts are a waste and all the yrs I’ve hunted never had a scope failure .
If it were my gun, I would install a good set of Leupold, or Redfield low mounted rings, or I would just use the open sights the way they are. Thanks for sharing Eric.
I've had my Gramps 742 .308 for over 30 years now, and love it! The only thing I've done to it is shorten the barrel to 18 inches. It's certainly taken its share of deer here in Wisconsin.
I enjoyed your video. I have the 742 carbine in 30-06...a great little gun that I bought back in 1979. The iron sights worked well enough for a couple years but then put a Bushnell 3x9x52 on it and can't count the whitetail I've taken with it. When I got the gun I also got 4 boxes of ammo (back then less than 7 buck a box) 220, 165, 150, and just for laughs the accelerator 40 grain I think. My rifle really likes the 150 better than anything else, holding just a tad over a one inch group at 100 yards and they do a darn good job on these smaller NW Florida deer. With the shorter barrel it makes a great little bush gun. The only thing bad about mine is it kicks like a mule! LoL I bought another one a few years back in 308 from my step dad who had two, the other was in 6mm that my brother got. Anyway...love hearing about these old guns, glad they are still around and doing well.
I've had a 742 ADL in 243 Win for almost 50 years and I LOVE it. Found that it shot Federal Premium 85 gr Game King BTHP the best. Could hold a group of under 1"
180g Sierra Gameking bullets always worked well in the 742. My Grandfather and Dad both had matching pairs of 742 and stacked deer with them back in the day. Over time Dad has to rebuild the action on his and moved onto a BAR. I hear they like axel grease on the moving parts being a crude as they are machined out.
I have a 742 in 30-06 that was made in 1963. It's in excellent condition, so I try not to load it too heavily. I worked out loads approximately to replicate the 308 win. It has more than enough energy for deer and I have no problem with cycling. To test the reliability, I kept reducing the powder charge of H4895(You can do that with that powder) and had no issues, even when way below 308 velocities.
The 742 in .30/06 ( usually with a 4X scope ) was THE deer and hog rifle in Fla. for many years, and somewhat still today with older hunters. My go-to hog rifle is a M-760 pump in .30/06, with a Leupold 2-7X scope with Fire Dot reticle. Fast and just over MOA accurate.
I have the 740 in 30-06, and they are very reliable and surprisingly accurate, I think the see-thru mounts were popular back in the day when scopes were not as reliable as they are today, and would sometimes fog up in inclement weather! I don't reload, but it's good with Remington core-lock 180 gr.
I’ve got a Remington 742 Jam-Master errrrrr I mean Wood Master too! Horrendous trigger! Same trigger as my Remington Model 11-48 12 gauge. Got a lighter spring for it which helped quite a bit. Factory mags with the bolt release are expensive, but worth it, because the aftermarket 10 round mags didn’t work at all for me. Mine loves 150 grain Interlocks and SST’s with Superformance powder.
I also own a 742 in 280 caliber. Awesome gun . Very accurate and dependable. To bad they want to make semi automatic firearms illegal. Would make criminals out of law abiding hunters and shooters criminals. But love the gun.
In addendum, I would add that 150 grain bullets over as little as 48.0 grains of IMR 4064 in 30-06 is often an accurate combo. In those 742s I would be inclined to load as light as is practical for reliable and accurate function. If you baby them with soft shooting ammo they should hang in there much better.
Got the same one in beautiful condition. When you tear it down and clean it, use grease to lube it. I use a 10oz tube of Lucas Red and Tacky grease gun grease for machines, it will last forever and cost $8. Lucas sells the same grease in a 1oz tube for around $13 for guns, do the math……taking them down is not for the feint of heart.
I also load 50 gr IMR 4064 for my 742 very good load for my auto think it was pushing my 150 gr pills about 2800 fps at the muzzle. I also load the same charge of IMR 4064 for my Rem 700 in 06 with 3/4 inch groups. CCI 200 primers starline brass. thanks for the video. oh them extra mags are pushing 150$plus now days...

My Remington 740 Loves 47gr. Varget with a 170gr. FP Interlock.My rifle does NOT like Spire point Bullets, likes bullets with a Flat point or round nose bullets only .
Stumbled across your video. I purchased a 742 BDL Woodsmaster in 30-06 back in 1982. Unbelievably I've never fired it as I put it in the safe and moved on to 700 bolt guns.
I feel the same way about see-thru mounts. It's too hard to acquire the sights quickly plus it doesn't allow a proper cheek weld. In some cheaper scopes, I've seen them run out of adjustment because of that high mount. Great video.
My youngest brother has a 742 carbine 18.5" .30-06 and loved the gun having taking some big boar with his. Amen on the scope issue. That see through mount in my experience is a sure sign of a rookie. Its really poor with irons and even worse with a scope putting your optics far too high. My brother uses his as said on wild boar with open sights. I know this will be like all your videos interesting and informative.
As a younger man living and hunting in the South, 742's and 760's were everywhere, and usually, they were in 30-06 with a few 243's and 308's thrown in. Personally, I was odd man out with my 700 bolt guns, but usually, I killed more deer than the others with their autos. But I think that was due to differing hunting styles. One of my uncles was the proud owner of one of the very early 742's in 30-06, and with his old Weaver steel tube 3x9 scope, he killed a fair share of whitetails. Lots of memories of him while carrying and that rifle. As an FYI, your friends rifle may need a good cleaning, especially the barrel, as most hunters I knew using these rifles were not the best at cleaning the bore after hunting seasons. I've seen a few that grouped much better after a serious cleaning.
My old, 30 06, 760 pump carbine With a 3x9 widefield scope with see through mounts is nice to have : 1 if your scope fogs 2 helps picking up running game
Owned a couple these over the years and loved the feel of them but was not at all crazy about the alloy receivers. These had a bad habit of wearing out if not maintained properly and allowed the bolt to nose up in the receiver. The 7600 had the plastic cover on the bolt and would sometimes get jammed up in the bolt and receiver while firing. If maintained well, the 742 would last a life time.
I have my late dad's near mint Remington 742 Woodsmaster in the .243 caliber with that same scope on it Burris Banner 3-9x40mm set on 6 power like he always left it !!! And yeah i need to go find me and extra magazine for it as well for he only had the one magazine that came with it !!! It has no sling for it's not that heavy !!!
try IMR4064 or IMR4895 48 to 49 grs with Hornady 168 AMAX or Sierra 168 Match King. My 7400 loves these combo. The only problem I have with this Remington is the forearm screw. The POI will change with the torque settings and as the barrel starts to heat up.
With an LPVO scope does allow you to use the open sights on that type of rifle if you bump your scope in the field you don’t have to leave to re zero I have the 7400 with the same style mounts and I can use both of the sight systems with no issue
I use a red dot co-witnessed with front sight. One of my buddies uses that same gun for hunting. I finally upgraded from my single shots 16, 308 and .50 cal. My 308 likes Tula steel cased. Tried heavier bullets and it's happy with 150 grain bullet or less. But it was zeroed with Tula too.
One of my biggest 10 points would have gotten away without see thru mounts. Scope fogged at the end of a couple of hours of tracking him following a doe. Used them again jump shooting one of my bears (largest) I've taken while still hunting. Not for everyone but I take few shots over 150 yards. Most about 50 to 75 in our woods.
I have my dad's 742 30-06 in my safe but it isn't nearly as nice as the one in this video. He bought it brand new in 1972 along with a Remington 1100 in 12 gauge. The 742 has those see through mounts as well. My dad is still living but has dementia so I haven't done anything to his firearms yet. When he passes I will have them reblued and cleaned by a professional gun smith.
It all depends on why it's jammed. If it's rust that's got it stuck, I would recommend a bit of Kroil applied at the base of the release button, and letting it sit overnight.
Just another thought. When loading for an autoloading rifle, it's often wise to crimp the bullets into place enough to prevent forward jump as they get slammed into the chamber. Also the Hornady flat base Interlock version will be less likely to shed the jacket than the boat tail version. Water is a tough on bullets target.
Didn't you or your buddy Phil take some target shots with the iron sights? 1 of the reasons for having see thru mounts is to use the iron sights if there is a scope malfunction and or depending on the distance or the hunting situation, and I have found those old school Remington iron sights to be top drawer. Daniel Boone didn't have any scopes on his guns and they worked for him rather well. I had an uncle who had his dad's 742 in .243 winchester and 2 friends who have 740 Remington rifles in .30-06 with scopes and see thru mounts.
Like I mentioned in the video, it's a matter of personal preference. I don't think my friend ever uses the open sights, and I think those see thru mounts came on the gun when he bought it. I understand why they are used by many hunters. Personally, I would rather use the open sights on my gun instead of see-thru mounts' and if I install a scope I would much rather have a good solid set of Leupold, Burris or Redfield low mounts to keep my head close to the stock, and my line of sight closer to the line of bullet travel. That being said...if you prefer see-thru mounts, and you have good luck with them then that's great. I would not criticize anyone's success. Thanks for the comments.
I had a 742 in 30-06 and it would shoot a 1" 3-shot group at 100 yards, given two things. First the barrel should have one or two fouling shots, and second, the barrel should not be too hot. If sighting in from the bench, it would start vertical stringing of the shots after about 5 rounds, and the barrel was too hot to touch. Also the magazines for the 742 must be a snug/tight lockup or they will jam. First thing to check if its not feeding right.
When the Remington 742 and 7400 are kept dry, clean and well maintained they are very reliable and accurate rifles. However, I've had to work lots of them and when they get wet and put back in the case and are left dirty they quickly develop problems. 1st is the gas port and metering ball. Once the ball is coroded it must be removed and replaced. Once the problem id encounted and the rifle is fired additional problems arise.Often the locking lugs are not properly cleaned and lubed which (when it becomes coroded and sticks) leads to malfuctions and stres to the bolt carrier group. The mags are often left in a hunting packet filled with candy, candy swrappers, cookies, small twigs from the woods and assorted other grim which easily finds its way into the mags and then into the gun. Much of it will wind up in the trigger mechanism. Most of the time by the time I see the rifle to be worked on due to neglect the repair bill is at 1/2 the cost of what the rifle is worth.
The same can be said about many other models of rifles. I always try to keep my equipment in top notch shape. Too many times the gun is blamed for a malfunction, when in reality it's the owner's fault.

I have one I killed a deer two years ago with it hadn't hunted with it in a long time thought I'd bring it out as far as getting an extra magazine good luck I can't find one and that Bushnell scope is probably the problem
There is a rifle like this in my family that came with and still has the see thru rings just like this one! I'm guessing it was for really close shots instead of possible scope failure.
Just commenting on lost of ammo clips..i started hunting in aprox 1968 ...thru out time Aprox 54 years .....ive never lost a ammo clip ..im sure it happens ...i was watching another video about tube magazines that are fed thru but stock on 22 rim fire rifles...it was said that the magazine follower tube is easy to lose...im still dont understand how that happens.. .unless maybe dropping it in the lake...
I own and often hunt with a Remington Model Six in.270 which is basically the pump action version of this. I’ve killed more deer with that rifle than all my other guns combined.
Run 220 grain bullets in that 742. You'll see those groups tighten up, and there's not a critter in North America you can't take with it. Try it out. Trust me
Then I’m mighty glad I have two of the greatest ones ever made!!! First one I traded a truck shell for is a Winchester pre-64 in 30-30 (or as it’s actually called dirty/dirty). First firearm one of my uncles bought when he retired from the navy in ‘64 brand new think he said he paid like $75.00. First time I shot it, three bullets made one big hole at 60+/- yards never had a scope mounted on this one. Second a Remington 742 in dirty ought 6 one my mom and dad (in-laws) gave it to me, another deer slayer that one has see through rings

Dang wish i didnt sell mine. Was 3006. I didnt like mine because i couldnt set the sights. The next day i shot and hit bullseye but reme!bered the day before it was hitting low. I moved it and shot and it was hitting high again so i sold it. It had scope mounts but i didnt have a scope. I even had a pump 760 270 and sold it too but damn im foolish. All I have is a bolt action 556 now with a red dot sight. Ill keep an eye out for one again.
the 4350 powder (IMR, Hodgdon, etc) are TOO slow for the 722 action (semi auto). The max pressure impulse is slower and damages the action. The medium burn rate powders: 4064, etc. are suited to the 742 action and will not damage the rifle.

One of the most popular deer hunting rifles of my youth (along with the 760/7600). I have never seen either one WITHOUT see through rings.
I have a 7400 in .30-06. Once I found the ammunition it liked (Winchester Super X) it runs like a sewing machine.

Thanks. Remington Core-Lokt bullets are great performing bullets. I like them in my Marlin 30-30. Good brass cases, and the bullets expand reliably.

See-through mounts are a popular addition on many deer rifles, but I have to agree with you in regards to accuracy.

My father reloaded 20 rounds using 46 grains 4064 with Hornady spire points. Using a 742 woods master from the early 70s that he gave to me with the reloads. It's been one round used per deer. I bought my 742 in 1972 while in the US air force. This rifle has knocked it's share of white tail in the North East and in the Maritimes of Canada. It's always been dependable with good ammo. Remington green and yellow box 180 grain for dense woods or Federal 165 BT for long range shooting. Bad ammo gives you bad shots. Otherwise this gun is a tack driver even with the hooped scope mounts that I had to use when snow fell from a tree blocking my sight picture in my scope. thank for the video

Ramshot Big Game 54 grs with a Hornady 165gr SST is a great load in 30-06 as well. 2750 fps. Very clean burning powder. Local gun shop has one of those in 280 Remington, might have to pick one up.

Tom…I bought a Remington Woodsmaster 742 in the BDL series in 308 in the Left hand configuration.. in 1979.. the BDL series had the the basket weave checkering or wood stamping. I picked up at a gun shop in Traverse city ,Michigan in my mid 20s and now at 70 ,I haven’t used it in 20 yrs. I bought it for cedar swamp and heavy cover deer drives..Whatta great rifle for fast shooting in heavy cover . I never put a scope on the rifle as most shots where under 40yds and shooting running deer required fast sight recognition of open sights…These days at a older age I do box blind hunting and use my 270 LH Remington 700 for that type of hunting…great video of a great woods rifle..and I have to agree with you the see thru scope mounts are a waste and all the yrs I’ve hunted never had a scope failure .
If it were my gun, I would install a good set of Leupold, or Redfield low mounted rings, or I would just use the open sights the way they are. Thanks for sharing Eric.

I've had my Gramps 742 .308 for over 30 years now, and love it! The only thing I've done to it is shorten the barrel to 18 inches. It's certainly taken its share of deer here in Wisconsin.
I enjoyed your video. I have the 742 carbine in 30-06...a great little gun that I bought back in 1979. The iron sights worked well enough for a couple years but then put a Bushnell 3x9x52 on it and can't count the whitetail I've taken with it. When I got the gun I also got 4 boxes of ammo (back then less than 7 buck a box) 220, 165, 150, and just for laughs the accelerator 40 grain I think. My rifle really likes the 150 better than anything else, holding just a tad over a one inch group at 100 yards and they do a darn good job on these smaller NW Florida deer. With the shorter barrel it makes a great little bush gun. The only thing bad about mine is it kicks like a mule! LoL I bought another one a few years back in 308 from my step dad who had two, the other was in 6mm that my brother got. Anyway...love hearing about these old guns, glad they are still around and doing well.
I've had a 742 ADL in 243 Win for almost 50 years and I LOVE it. Found that it shot Federal Premium 85 gr Game King BTHP the best. Could hold a group of under 1"
180g Sierra Gameking bullets always worked well in the 742. My Grandfather and Dad both had matching pairs of 742 and stacked deer with them back in the day. Over time Dad has to rebuild the action on his and moved onto a BAR. I hear they like axel grease on the moving parts being a crude as they are machined out.

I have a 742 in 30-06 that was made in 1963. It's in excellent condition, so I try not to load it too heavily. I worked out loads approximately to replicate the 308 win. It has more than enough energy for deer and I have no problem with cycling. To test the reliability, I kept reducing the powder charge of H4895(You can do that with that powder) and had no issues, even when way below 308 velocities.

I have spoke with Remington and they are never making this gun again. It's a great gun and very accurate and reliable if you keep it clean.
So many good models are now a thing of the past.
The 742 in .30/06 ( usually with a 4X scope ) was THE deer and hog rifle in Fla. for many years, and somewhat still today with older hunters. My go-to hog rifle is a M-760 pump in .30/06, with a Leupold 2-7X scope with Fire Dot reticle. Fast and just over MOA accurate.
I used my 740 for about 20 years lots of game. Loads ( best) sierra 165 spitzer and 4350 at about 27 to 2800. Very good at 100 yds. Never went beyond

I have the 740 in 30-06, and they are very reliable and surprisingly accurate, I think the see-thru mounts were popular back in the day when scopes were not as reliable as they are today, and would sometimes fog up in inclement weather! I don't reload, but it's good with Remington core-lock 180 gr.
I’ve got a Remington 742 Jam-Master errrrrr I mean Wood Master too! Horrendous trigger! Same trigger as my Remington Model 11-48 12 gauge. Got a lighter spring for it which helped quite a bit. Factory mags with the bolt release are expensive, but worth it, because the aftermarket 10 round mags didn’t work at all for me. Mine loves 150 grain Interlocks and SST’s with Superformance powder.
I've never tried that powder, but have heard good things about it.

I also own a 742 in 280 caliber. Awesome gun . Very accurate and dependable. To bad they want to make semi automatic firearms illegal. Would make criminals out of law abiding hunters and shooters criminals. But love the gun.
In addendum, I would add that 150 grain bullets over as little as 48.0 grains of IMR 4064 in 30-06 is often an accurate combo. In those 742s I would be inclined to load as light as is practical for reliable and accurate function. If you baby them with soft shooting ammo they should hang in there much better.
Got the same one in beautiful condition. When you tear it down and clean it, use grease to lube it. I use a 10oz tube of Lucas Red and Tacky grease gun grease for machines, it will last forever and cost $8. Lucas sells the same grease in a 1oz tube for around $13 for guns, do the math……taking them down is not for the feint of heart.
I also load 50 gr IMR 4064 for my 742 very good load for my auto think it was pushing my 150 gr pills about 2800 fps at the muzzle. I also load the same charge of IMR 4064 for my Rem 700 in 06 with 3/4 inch groups. CCI 200 primers starline brass. thanks for the video. oh them extra mags are pushing 150$plus now days...

Stumbled across your video. I purchased a 742 BDL Woodsmaster in 30-06 back in 1982. Unbelievably I've never fired it as I put it in the safe and moved on to 700 bolt guns.
I feel the same way about see-thru mounts. It's too hard to acquire the sights quickly plus it doesn't allow a proper cheek weld. In some cheaper scopes, I've seen them run out of adjustment because of that high mount. Great video.
My youngest brother has a 742 carbine 18.5" .30-06 and loved the gun having taking some big boar with his. Amen on the scope issue. That see through mount in my experience is a sure sign of a rookie. Its really poor with irons and even worse with a scope putting your optics far too high. My brother uses his as said on wild boar with open sights. I know this will be like all your videos interesting and informative.

As a younger man living and hunting in the South, 742's and 760's were everywhere, and usually, they were in 30-06 with a few 243's and 308's thrown in. Personally, I was odd man out with my 700 bolt guns, but usually, I killed more deer than the others with their autos. But I think that was due to differing hunting styles. One of my uncles was the proud owner of one of the very early 742's in 30-06, and with his old Weaver steel tube 3x9 scope, he killed a fair share of whitetails. Lots of memories of him while carrying and that rifle.
As an FYI, your friends rifle may need a good cleaning, especially the barrel, as most hunters I knew using these rifles were not the best at cleaning the bore after hunting seasons. I've seen a few that grouped much better after a serious cleaning.
Without a good chronograph, you have NO IDEA what velocity your getting. BELIEVE ME, I KNOW.
Still have my 742 Carbine in 308win, nice deer rifle -easy carry and quick.
Mine had those see thru rings took them off and put leupold rings closer to the barrel seemed easer for me to sight in

Owned a couple these over the years and loved the feel of them but was not at all crazy about the alloy receivers. These had a bad habit of wearing out if not maintained properly and allowed the bolt to nose up in the receiver. The 7600 had the plastic cover on the bolt and would sometimes get jammed up in the bolt and receiver while firing. If maintained well, the 742 would last a life time.
I have my late dad's near mint Remington 742 Woodsmaster in the .243 caliber with that same scope on it Burris Banner 3-9x40mm set on 6 power like he always left it !!! And yeah i need to go find me and extra magazine for it as well for he only had the one magazine that came with it !!! It has no sling for it's not that heavy !!!

try IMR4064 or IMR4895 48 to 49 grs with Hornady 168 AMAX or Sierra 168 Match King. My 7400 loves these combo. The only problem I have with this Remington is the forearm screw. The POI will change with the torque settings and as the barrel starts to heat up.
I had one in 6mm. Excellent gun very accurate.
With an LPVO scope does allow you to use the open sights on that type of rifle if you bump your scope in the field you don’t have to leave to re zero I have the 7400 with the same style mounts and I can use both of the sight systems with no issue
I use a red dot co-witnessed with front sight. One of my buddies uses that same gun for hunting. I finally upgraded from my single shots 16, 308 and .50 cal. My 308 likes Tula steel cased. Tried heavier bullets and it's happy with 150 grain bullet or less. But it was zeroed with Tula too.
One of my biggest 10 points would have gotten away without see thru mounts. Scope fogged at the end of a couple of hours of tracking him following a doe. Used them again jump shooting one of my bears (largest) I've taken while still hunting. Not for everyone but I take few shots over 150 yards. Most about 50 to 75 in our woods.

I have my dad's 742 30-06 in my safe but it isn't nearly as nice as the one in this video. He bought it brand new in 1972 along with a Remington 1100 in 12 gauge. The 742 has those see through mounts as well. My dad is still living but has dementia so I haven't done anything to his firearms yet. When he passes I will have them reblued and cleaned by a professional gun smith.

It all depends on why it's jammed. If it's rust that's got it stuck, I would recommend a bit of Kroil applied at the base of the release button, and letting it sit overnight.
Buff the magazine especially at the top. Clean the gun regularly.

Just another thought. When loading for an autoloading rifle, it's often wise to crimp the bullets into place enough to prevent forward jump as they get slammed into the chamber. Also the Hornady flat base Interlock version will be less likely to shed the jacket than the boat tail version. Water is a tough on bullets target.

Didn't you or your buddy Phil take some target shots with the iron sights? 1 of the reasons for having see thru mounts is to use the iron sights if there is a scope malfunction and or depending on the distance or the hunting situation, and I have found those old school Remington iron sights to be top drawer. Daniel Boone didn't have any scopes on his guns and they worked for him rather well. I had an uncle who had his dad's 742 in .243 winchester and 2 friends who have 740 Remington rifles in .30-06 with scopes and see thru mounts.
Like I mentioned in the video, it's a matter of personal preference. I don't think my friend ever uses the open sights, and I think those see thru mounts came on the gun when he bought it. I understand why they are used by many hunters. Personally, I would rather use the open sights on my gun instead of see-thru mounts' and if I install a scope I would much rather have a good solid set of Leupold, Burris or Redfield low mounts to keep my head close to the stock, and my line of sight closer to the line of bullet travel. That being said...if you prefer see-thru mounts, and you have good luck with them then that's great. I would not criticize anyone's success. Thanks for the comments.
I had a 742 in 30-06 and it would shoot a 1" 3-shot group at 100 yards, given two things. First the barrel should have one or two fouling shots, and second, the barrel should not be too hot. If sighting in from the bench, it would start vertical stringing of the shots after about 5 rounds, and the barrel was too hot to touch. Also the magazines for the 742 must be a snug/tight lockup or they will jam. First thing to check if its not feeding right.
Man my brother in law got 28 deer behind his he has the pump .numb fails me but it's usually one shot .great weapon

When the Remington 742 and 7400 are kept dry, clean and well maintained they are very reliable and accurate rifles. However, I've had to work lots of them and when they get wet and put back in the case and are left dirty they quickly develop problems. 1st is the gas port and metering ball. Once the ball is coroded it must be removed and replaced. Once the problem id encounted and the rifle is fired additional problems arise.Often the locking lugs are not properly cleaned and lubed which (when it becomes coroded and sticks) leads to malfuctions and stres to the bolt carrier group. The mags are often left in a hunting packet filled with candy, candy swrappers, cookies, small twigs from the woods and assorted other grim which easily finds its way into the mags and then into the gun. Much of it will wind up in the trigger mechanism. Most of the time by the time I see the rifle to be worked on due to neglect the repair bill is at 1/2 the cost of what the rifle is worth.

The same can be said about many other models of rifles. I always try to keep my equipment in top notch shape. Too many times the gun is blamed for a malfunction, when in reality it's the owner's fault.

I have one I killed a deer two years ago with it hadn't hunted with it in a long time thought I'd bring it out as far as getting an extra magazine good luck I can't find one and that Bushnell scope is probably the problem
There is a rifle like this in my family that came with and still has the see thru rings just like this one! I'm guessing it was for really close shots instead of possible scope failure.
With a 150 GR I like 55 GR of 4064 in my 30-06 .
Have one in .243 first 2 shots are fine but 3rd shot strays probally heats up

Yeah these models tend to not be very accurate and the complaints of that and jamming is likely why they discontinued them so long ago.
I'm assuming you are done with this project. So I will toss out the question; Has anyone else tuned reduced loads for 742s using 4064 or 4895 powders?
Just commenting on lost of ammo clips..i started hunting in aprox 1968 ...thru out time Aprox 54 years .....ive never lost a ammo clip ..im sure it happens ...i was watching another video about tube magazines that are fed thru but stock on 22 rim fire rifles...it was said that the magazine follower tube is easy to lose...im still dont understand how that happens.. .unless maybe dropping it in the lake...

I own and often hunt with a Remington Model Six in.270 which is basically the pump action version of this. I’ve killed more deer with that rifle than all my other guns combined.
Run 220 grain bullets in that 742. You'll see those groups tighten up, and there's not a critter in North America you can't take with it. Try it out. Trust me
My brother uses 220 grain in his rifle and your absolutely correct.
He would get the same accuracy if he slowed those light 150 gains down to about 2700 fps. Chasing speed tends to give up accuracy.

The heavier grains like the (220gr) out of the 742s should be used liberally because the locking lugs tend to beat up the internal rails

Then I’m mighty glad I have two of the greatest ones ever made!!! First one I traded a truck shell for is a Winchester pre-64 in 30-30 (or as it’s actually called dirty/dirty). First firearm one of my uncles bought when he retired from the navy in ‘64 brand new think he said he paid like $75.00. First time I shot it, three bullets made one big hole at 60+/- yards never had a scope mounted on this one. Second a Remington 742 in dirty ought 6 one my mom and dad (in-laws) gave it to me, another deer slayer that one has see through rings

Will a turkish surplus 7.62x63 work safely in that same rifle ? I know some calibers interchange one way but not the other
Alot of times the magazines cause those guns to jam. I took a very fine jewlers file to mine and never jammed again
Dang wish i didnt sell mine. Was 3006. I didnt like mine because i couldnt set the sights. The next day i shot and hit bullseye but reme!bered the day before it was hitting low. I moved it and shot and it was hitting high again so i sold it. It had scope mounts but i didnt have a scope. I even had a pump 760 270 and sold it too but damn im foolish. All I have is a bolt action 556 now with a red dot sight. Ill keep an eye out for one again.

That's why I have raised mounts. So, for me, it seems "silly" not to have them.
the 4350 powder (IMR, Hodgdon, etc) are TOO slow for the 722 action (semi auto). The max pressure impulse is slower and damages the action. The medium burn rate powders: 4064, etc. are suited to the 742 action and will not damage the rifle.
Had the chance of buy a 7600. Wish I had of.
