  • I recently obtained some 30-30 Winchester ammo by different manufacturers, and decided to test each one of them side-by-side in this video. If you are a deer hunter, especially if you own a 30-30, then this is the video for you, so sit back and enjoy.

I really enjoyed this video. Took me back a few years. In the summer of 1972 I had earned enough hay money working on other farms. And split and sold locusts post to a local feed dealer for 50 cents a post. To buy my first deer rifle. A 1968 marlin 336c in 35 rem. It even had a 4 power bushnell scope chief mounted. It was chambered in 35 rem. The dealer was so used to me walking in to put my weeks take on the counter and visit my rifle on lay away. He'd say here comes young Parksy ,I was expecting you. When the deal was closed for 139.95 he tossed in a box of remington 200 grain core-lokt roundnose ammo. What a day!! Seems now like yesterday. My first deer came that winter with that rifle. Chores done early that morning of opening day ,A then 3 day doe season. Long John's two pair of jeans. Two pair of socks, a bread bag over the socks stuffed into uninsullated green barn boots.
Brown jersey gloves and a spare pair tucked inside my coat against my chest we headed out. The weather was a true test,Driving ice that stung hitting my face. Wind blowing it sideways. Didn't matter three days of doe in that time meant you go period. By 10 am I didn't think I could hold the rifle steady. I took shelter under a massive bolder twice my height. Thinking of fresh deer liver and onions and the wood stove at home. By 1015 .I was standing over my first deer. I wasn't cold anymore. My family is serious hand loaders. So hand loads since that first box is all this rifle has seen since 1972. I've been blessed with grand children. I've bought another 336c marlin in 35 rem. And found a 4 power bushnell scope chief on ebay. And bought two boxes of good old remington 200 gr core-lokt ammo. Can't wait to put these in my grand kids hands. I think it's a good place to start.

Wow! What an incredible story. I truly enjoyed reading it because you took us all there to that time. I almost bought one in 35 Remington, but decided to get a 30-30 instead. If I run across another 336 in 35 Rem. I'll try my best to latch onto it and make a video. The 35 Remington is a close to medium range hard hitting cartridge, and a fantastic choice for the woods where whitetails live. Thanks so much for sharing your experience. That just made my day!

I like a 30- 30 also and always use Remington Core-lock. I shot my first deer with a Stevenson bolt action30-30. This past year I harvested a beautiful 200 plus pound 9 point 22 inch spread buck with my Grandfathers 1896 Krag he bought way back when the government was selling them as surplus rifles. He paid 3 dollars for it. That buck dropped in his tracks like a ton of bricks. It made me feel proud to harvest that buck with his rifle. I was 3 years old when he passed away, I’m now 66.

One of my hunting partners for years was the Pastor of my church. Right before he passed away, he told me that the previous three years he had taken 16 deer with his Marlin 30-30. He shot the Winchester 150 Grain Silver Tip (flat nose) ammo, that we purchased from Wal-Mart. He said two of the deer he killed were over two hundred yards away. He also said a 30-30 would kill over two hundred yards if you knew your rifle, the ammo, and the trajectory.
Since around 1986 or 1987, I have used a Marlin 336A 30-30 with the 24" barrel (5+1 capacity)., manufactured around 1980 with the JM stamp. It looks very similar to your rifle. Over the years I have taken more deer with this rifle than any other firearm. (I have never lost a deer that I hit with a 30-30.). For years, I used the same Winchester Silver Tip ammo previously mentioned above, until 4 years ago, I had it re-sighted for the Hornady 160 Grain LeveRevolution Bullets. All I can say is that the Hornady ammo turned that 30-30 into something like a .308. It was like shooting missiles. It is much more potent, with much more velocity and distance. The Hornady ammo will take care of business.

The Hornady FTX bullet used in the Leverevolution is definitely an improvement in tube fed rifles. My experience was with the 160 grain Leverevolution in my Marlin 336. I harvested a deer shot behind the shoulder at 175 yards. I watched the deer run in the middle of the field into the woods. I walked over to the spot where I shot. Luckily it was in the morning of opening day. The guys in the hunting camp were telling me to use my trusty Remington 742 30-06. I wanted to test the ability of the new Hornady ammunition in the field. I recovered the deer about 100 yards from where I shot it. It was a double lung hit. I would use the Remington 170 grain Core Lokt on deer in my tree stand in the woods. Most shots were 50 to 75 yards and the deer dropped!

I wanted a Marlin 336 and mowed yards etc and saved up the $87.95 it took to buy one in 1962. I was 17 years old and ordered it from Parker Brothers in New York. I came home from school and it was sitting in the corner on our porch where the mail man left it. I got my first buck that fall with it. I didn’t even have to have my parents signature to buy it and no one signed for it on delivery. Try that today. Most boys who had a vehicle carried a rifle on the back window of their pick up truck to school. They would stop on the way home from school and deer hunt till dark. Better days for sure and I still have that Marlin 336.

I really enjoyed this review. Consistent methodology. As well, I really enjoyed seeing the performance of that rifle length Marlin .30-30.
One more reason to choose the Remington ammo, it is usually more available at more retailers and at a more attractive price point than most other brands of ammunition; Winchester typically being the second most available and affordable.
But in the end, it all comes down to choosing the ammo that best performs in your rifle. For me, the priority is: 1) Availability (can I consistently find it when I need it), 2) Accuracy (terminal ballistics mean nothing if I cannot be absolutely consistently accurate with my rifle/ ammo combination), 3) terminal performance.

All of this ammo you tested is hunting approved in my opinion. I shoot a Marlin 336XLR (JM stamped also) and they are great guns. It also has the 24" barrel. Probably why your velocities are in the 2300's. I don't think 20" barrels give that. Great video.

I have model 94 Big Bore .375 and the only source for ammo that I'm aware of is Winchester and accuracy was horrid to put it mildly . I could barely keep bullets on a 14 inch target at 50 yrds . Seating depth was visibly inconsistent and after sacrificing some cartridges I found the bullets to be undersized 3-4 thousands . I now handload for my .375 and keep a 2 inch group with iron sights.

I liked your video. Forget the Remington, my Marlin doesn't shoot Rem ammo as accurately either. Just pick one of the others, correct your scope with your choice and go hunting. I don't handload, but the most accurate factory ammo I ever encountered was the old school Winchester Silver Tips. The ones with the aluminium insert. Wow, those 150's would print a 7/8" 3 shot group at 100 yards with the carbine easily. Have Leupold 2X7 VX mounted on top with super low Leupold mounts.
Got comparable accuracy with Federal 150, Fusion 150, and Win 150.
    The cheap ammo impressed.

Good evening, i just watched this 30/30 ammo video 👍. My step father bought a Marlin 30/30 336W ( i would imagine new ) he retired from General Motors, it has the gold front sight, gold trigger and if I'm correct charging handle as well. Last time i looked up s/n I'm pretty sure i did it correctly was manufactured 1947 ??? He also has a Marlin 22 rifle Model 60W with gold trigger, gold coin in the stock and i think another feature? Maybe that was the 1947 date? Mom lives an hour away I'll have to write down info next time I'm up there. Thanks for your time in making the videos greatly appreciated and God Bless.

Another great video! Very informative and interesting. I have nearly the same rifle, a Marlin 336 SC…. Sporting Carbine, with 20” bbl. and 2/3 magazine, but in .35 Remington. Made in 1962. A fantastic rifle, also very accurate with 200 gr. Remington Core-Loct ammo. Deadly on hogs and deer here in Fla., one of my favorite carrying rifles. Thanks, good luck, and God Bless!

I have a 1957 Marlin 336 SC in .35 Remington with a Griffin and Howe mount with a Weaver K 1.5 with post reticle.
I purchased it from a gunshop in NE Pennsylvania. The story the gun shop owner told me is the owner bought this new and only used it on opening day since many people would take off from work on that Monday. He changed the optic back in the 70s as his original Weaver was fogging up. The rifle is in excellent condition. The Griffin and Howe mount was a popular but expensive option to add to a hunting rifle. You don’t see that type of craftsmanship on newer firearms. The action is smooth. The 200 grain Hornady Leverevolution can stretch it out over 100 yards.
I hope Ruger does a good job with acquiring Marlin. I would love to see more .35 Remington caliber rifles made so more ammunition is available.

Oh man, what a nice rifle! The vintage G&H mount is a tremendously sweet addition! The scope is a great one, and the post will really stand out. The scope on my 336 is a late 60’s Bushnell Scopechief 2x8X, with a thin crosshair reticle, that had an additional ring on the eyepiece that flips up a large bold post overlaying the crosshairs. ‘Command Post’ feature. I just love this vintage stuff that works! Enjoy that great Marlin, and good luck!

Oh, and about Ruger made Marlins, the one’s that I have seen are FANTASTIC! Excellent quality and in some ways, like the cold hammer forged barrels, better than the best JM rifles. My next will be a Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag. they just introduced back into production ( Ruger)! We will have to see if Ruger goes back to .35 REM. offerings, or maybe goes with the new straight wall .35 Buckhammer, with identical ballistics to the REM.

The bullets are designed to function at 30-30 velocities…
    Expansion, penetration…
And are chambered in a carbine Levergun, that shoulders like a shotgun…&Low recoiling …
It all adds up to great hunting round.. only round I use .. in a 336
I have contacted Ruger a 1/2 dozen times in the past few years asking them to come out with a Ruger American Ranch carbine in 30-30 with a 16 inch barrel… specifically for use in heavy brush or in a treestand

I've never chronographed this ammo but I've noticed the slight extra recoil thump in most product offerings from Winchester. Winchester ammo Does not compare to Underwood or Buffalo bore but I've noticed in many calibers Winchester does seem to load their products a little faster than Remington or Federal. Kind of a just right offering in my opinion. Remington is a very respectable choice nonetheless.

That bullet expansion for the PPU ammo is actually the best of all four. It appears to have the same double caliber expansion, and MORE shank and looks like itvretained more weight yhan the others.
    But they all performed great!

I suspected, from the beginning - before testing, you favored the Remington. You foreshadowed your test results in the first few minutes before any testing was done. So it was no surprise that you gave Remington a second chance but none of the others. I do the same thing…..I love this ammo but it did not perform as expected so let me do it again. I think they call that ammo bias. All of us shooters suffer from it. Great video - keep the coming.

  • @johnnorman7708

That 24" 336A barrel is why that ammo is zipping right along. That Winchester seemed almost hot for velocity. One thing about .30-30 is that it's almost impossible to get a conventional soft point to fail on you at it's normal speed, especially the 170 grain version. You run out of speed before you run out of bullet.

Rem Core-Lokt has been the top performer in my 336 rifle (not carbine), also. Lately, I have become a fan of the Federal Power Shok line of ammo. It is accurate in every caliber I have tried, 12 ga. sabots, too.
Just my opinion here, that PPU expansion looks plenty good. I wonder what the results would be if you weighed the bullets from all the tests. The PPU looks like it may have retained more weight.

I'd like to see more ammo test (for accuracy) and how well these lever guns can shoot. The ammo tests help narrow down what ammo to use with a rifle (with Marlins (and others)the date of manufacture will make a difference do to a different type of rifling or twist rate. I would love to have a nice place to live that I could shoot, hunt and farm on. I don't want to go crazy with it but it would be nice to grow some of my own food. Great video if you have a 35 Rem (or any of the others you have)I would love to see that too! Nice job and good luck and be safe.

A very well done video. Informative, interesting, great photography and commentary. The ammo companies have got that 30/30 round pretty consistent as to bullet performance. I’m curious how the their 170 grain bullets would fare in comparison. The 336A’s are real nice rifles. I’ve got one in .35 Rem and 38/55, a 1936 24” in 30/30 and a 36 A in .32 Spl. Such nice rifles to hunt with.

*My nearly identical same vintage 336 SC magically gained accuracy when I fitted it with a new DNZ game reaper scope mount and a new Vortex Crossfire II V-Brite scope. Same identical ammo, with a Bushnell Banner Wal-Mart grade scope 6" groups or larger patterns at 100 yards. {not acceptable}. Install DNZ game reaper mount and Vortex V-Brite 3-9x and the seemingly random patterns suddenly shrank to 1" or 1.5" groups with the same brands of ammo from the same batch of boxes. Sometimes, a new or better optic and mount can make a real difference. Iron sights can also be extremely effective.... If the budget allows Awesome iron sights, peep sight, ghost ring, or bullseye peep, or a China-Mart cheap scope of questionable quality, I might opt for the awesome iron sights. In fact... on my bolt action I do have target grade peep sights... and, I like them. Yes, that old Mauser is drilled and tapped for a scope...and, I actually prefer the Redfield Target knobs Peep sight. One pound or more 'lighter to carry' never fogs over, and can hold 2" groups at 100 meters even with my old eyes. I like it. Same or similar peep sights can be fitted to nearly any rifle.*

I think anyway, if those federals are a flat nose soft point, all the power shok 30-30 I have stacked which is in the old style blue box packaging, are true round nose soft points. They do work well, I do typically go with the 170 grain power shoks when 30-30 use is in order
