My first rifle was a 94 Winchester in 30-30, bought new at JC Penny for $74.99 when I was 16 years old. I still own it and it's still one of my favorite hunting rifles. From deer to hogs, the 30-30 gets it done. And yea, either of those would be fine. Thanks Tools, now I need to buy more 30-30 ammo!
I love 30-30 it's such a soft shooting cartridge and has plenty of power to take down bigger game. My dad's old Winchester Model 94 still shoots like a dream to this day
Mine used to do the same until I traded it at a gun show like an idiot for an SKS and $150. No, I didn’t get $150, I gave it. If only I had a time machine..
Haven't fired the 30-30 in years. It used to be my deer hunting gun, but I don't hunt anymore, so it just sits in the safe. Appreciate all you do. Keep the videos coming 👍.
Got my dads marlin 336 after passed recently. Fun gun to shoot but 30-30 ammo prices are expensive now. I learned on that rifle as a kid. Good memories on the 30-30. You have a great Channel sir
I took down a Caribou bull at 279 yards with my Marlin 336 30-30 and 160gr Hornady. Dropped in his tracks. I have many very nice rifles, but that 30-30 is my SHTF gun.😊
Very impressive results. Every deer I’ve seen shot by the .30-30 has dropped like they were hit by a dump truck, and after seeing what those bullets do in the gel it’s understandable. Not the flashiest round out there these days but still 100% capable of getting the job done. Love the .30-30! Great video, thanks! 👍
30-30 was my first hunting rifle. Awesome caliber, big fan here. I always used the 170gr. I usually stuck with the Remington SP core Lokt 170gr. The Federal Power Shok reminds of those. Great test and shot placement. Very informative. 170gr. Goes through brush like a like a tornado , straight path. Thanks for sharing and be safe. ⭐️⭐️🇺🇸⭐️⭐️
Love the ol trusty dirty-thirty, I have a couple boxes of the federal power Shok on hand, however my rifle a marlin 336 shoots the Hornady leverevolution the most accurate and to date I've taken my biggest buck a big 10 pt with the Hornady LE, the buck dropped DRT on the spot.
From what I saw the Power-Shok hit with more authority, It just seemed to jump the jelly harder, but like you said, both did very well, No problem with either, another thing I've not mentioned before is your channel supports the 2160-4K HD, and since I have got my fiber wi-fi doing great, I can now watch it like I should, Thanks Brian, really enjoyed it, have a great weekend. 👍🇺🇸
Nice. Seems like most folks watch on their phones now but I still make most stuff 4k for big screens. I watch on a 4k monitor myself. Appreciate ya, brother!😎👊
In a world where marketing advertises velocity is king, the 30-30 is often overlooked. However, if your shots are less than 200yrds , the 30-30 with a 170gr bullet is difficult to beat. The large softpoint tip expands nicely and the penetration is more than adequate for medium to large sized game. I could hunt a lifetime with a 30-30 and or 35 Rem and not feel I've needed more.
With performance like that, you don't choose. Let your gun choose which one it likes (groups) better. Accuracy is as important as bullet performance. Many of my rifles love the Fusion (1/4 to 1/2" groups all day long). My newest one doesn't like it though, it prefers the Federal Terminal Ascent. That Power Shock was impressive though. Great job on the test as usual. Would love to see you test the Terminal Ascent in. 308 Win.
Awesome!!! I have a couple boxes of PowerShoks and 1 box the Fusion. And 170gn is the preferred deer cartridge for penetration. My Winchester 94 does great with both the PowerShocks and Remington CoreLokts. But of recent years, I think Federal pulled ahead in performance slightly. But now I know the difference in these 2 projectiles, even for my 308. Many thanks, Tools! Appreciate the Common Hunter round testing -- it's a true public service. 👍
I used power shock for deer in Nort Dakota, 150 gr in 30-30 and 30-06. Both were devastating. Thr fusions looked good, but I'll probably stick with power shocks. Great video as always!
My brother bought a 30.30 when he was 18 to use for a deer rifle. He took me hunting the year after when I was 8 and let me use it over my dads 12 gauge slug gun so I wouldn’t be suffering after I shot a deer because I was a pretty small kid at that age. I hit a 6 point with it and even for my size and age it felt like a pretty soft shooting gun compared to what I’ve shot before and the deer only made it about 20 yards before he collapsed. If you use it within its parameters it’s a fantastic hunting round.
I'd say that feud was not settled. I'd like to see that performance from a similar bullet in a 7.62x39 or 300 Blackout. I always here those 2 compared to 30-30 but I've yet to see results like these. Keep up the good work T and T!
I picked up a brand new Henry 30-30 20" all steel with large loop. I believe it's identical to yours. Also a box of Federal Hammer Down and Hornady Lever Evolution as I saw you tested both. I know how they will perform. I will be reloading the 30-30. Thanks again for the video.
I started with a slug then, Thuddy - Thuddy. Like a lot of folks. Remington Core-lok, Winchester Soft point and Federal all worked great. The Winchester Silver box I've used from 220 Swift to 300 Win Mag and it was the best price in my area back then. 243 100gr Silver box 11.99. I still have a couple boxes put up. When getting above 2800 fps a bonded bullet holds together better in my experiences. Most of that is on whitetail. Cup n core bullets have worked for year's. Are there improved bullet designs, absolutely but dead is dead. With that said, I wouldn't feel out gunned if this were my primary protection weapon with practice. A leather sleeve on the butt stock with extra rounds. Similair to the 7.62 x 39 military cartridge. Very potent within its parameters. Excellent job as per usual Tool's. Keep'em coming!
My 1970's vintage micro-groove Marlin 336 loves both the 150gr and 170gr Fusions, very accurate. For some reason the Power Shock 150gr is not as accurate in my gun. They all have the terminal ballistics to flatten a deer of a hog. The classic .30-30 is definitely still one of the best medium game cartridges up to 200 yards. Combined with a fast and handy lever action rifle, you can't beat it in the woods. Keep up the great videos TnT!
I grew up with the old 170 flat nose 30-30. They hammer deer just fine. At those speeds I don't believe you need a bonded bullet. The "Lever Evolution" s 150 with the soft tip, gives the 30-30 a better BC and shoots a bit flatter.
I always like seeing 30-30 tests; they all seem to go like this: (1) this round is way old (2) hmm velocities seem low compared to modern stuff (3) [hits the gel] whoa, that would 100% kill the heck out of a whitetail
I have an 1894 rifle 26" barrel made in 1917, and the federal fusion 150 gr is absolutely the most accurate ammo I've ever used in 30 WCF (30-30) And I've used just about everything else, including my own handloads. Open sights, original Marbles tang peep. Five shots 1.25 inches and usually two or three touching (using a lead sled). The 170 gr is not that great. 3.5" is my best at 100 yards (usually closer to 4") with the same rifle. Lever evolution accuracy is about the same as 170 gr fusion.
That Power Shock is extremely accurate out of my 30-30 TC Contender pistol. That pistol shoots under an inch with that ammo at 100 yards. Other factory ammo best group I can get is about an inch and a half.
Just sighted in my Marlin with a crappy Banner scope on a crappy rest. Ended up with a three shot 1 inch group on center@ 100yrds with the Power shock...good enough for me.
Loved the video Tools, thank you for doing the Federal comparison, been waiting on it, and i knew it wouldn't disappoint. Both rounds did really did, that fusion is good in any caliber i believe whether its 30-30 or 556, its a winner, but power shok is no push over, id take federals offerings over most standards i believe. Thanks again for doing this test!!
What causes the flash sometimes in the gel, I see it a lot but no one ever really explains what happens. Good testing, I use 150 grain in my .30-30 Smaller deer in this area than up north. It just works excellent on deer.
Nice! Up to 150 yards a winner bring home the smaller deer meat load and rifle combo. Wouldn’t use it further out and on heavier game. My pedestrian 20’ 30-06 has double the energy at 100.
30-30 and 30-06 my favorite two caliber. With the green tip 30-06 never had any deer run off. All but one dropped where they was shot. One doe ran 10 yards.
@@ToolsandTargetshave you seen the Bear Creek Huntmaster rifles? .30-'06 and the like in AR type package. Could be an interesting platform for you to test?
@@ToolsandTargets there are for sure some interesting tests to be had. I would start with a stark difference to get the camps exited and the comment section red hot 😂 - Copper Mono vs. Cup-and-Core, Barnes TTSX 150 grain vs. Hornady ELD-X 178 grain
Federal Power SHOK 170gr is all I run with a dime size group at 50 and 100 yards (3 round group) with my Marlin 336CS. Great ammo for deer esp. in the brush. It’s a very flat shooting run out to 150 yards. But both were more than great. Great video. 👏🏻
Im in North Dakota been using Remington 150 gr for over 40 years with Winchester pre 93 . Have made sum 200 yard shots . I practice on a nice flat dirt field to get my hold over . Make sure the hot brass don't land on the horses rear with a top eject 😊 .
I have a Marlin 336CS .30-30 win. I usually shoot the Remington PSP Kore-Lokt ammo either with the 170 grain bullets or the 150 grain bullets. I did buy a box of the Federal, I believe, Powershock ammo, but I forget if it is with the 150 grain bullets or the 170 grain bullets. I have yet to shoot them in my rifle.
.30-30 is my favorite lever acrion round. Deer season is in, and when gun season comes in it "Looks like meats back on the table boys"! 🤣 You're a great shot with that Henry and scope combo as well!
I like the 30-30, it's been a good cartridge for me over the years, on hogs and deer alike. Had a Winchester 94, bought it in rough shape, but it shot very well. Sold it and bought a nice Sears model 54, pretty much the same thing, but this was in great condition and it's cool it says Sears on it though it was made by Winchester. I've used mostly remington corelokts in mine, but I've taken deer with the remingtons and the winchester loads, they seem to perform identical from my experience. I have tons of the Hornady stuff but haven't used it yet, I only bought that because it was on sale for a price I couldn't pass up during the ammo crunch when 30-30 was almost impossible to get.
Boom Boom Time Both will do great on a Chinese Spy Balloon 🎈. Figured it might be close. Hard to beat a big soft nosed round. Still doing between 1800 to 1860fps at 100yds. Good stuff. Thanks!! 🙏💥👍
Tools & Targets, if you can pull it off, you'd be the first person on the platform who's tested Buffalo Bore 190gr .30-30 in gel. But make sure to have 3 blocks. I'd love to see this load tested. The Barnes Pioneer 190gr was tested but Buffalo Bore promises a good bit more velocity and runs a Hawk bullet. BB are expensive and you'll have to order them. Just keep an eye out.
Do you have a32 special? I'll send you some ammo to try out if you do. Shooting jackets and Leverevolution against black powder cast loads you won't believe the results. I don't have jelly , that would be neat to see🎉🎉🎉
I hunt with Fusion and target shoot with Power Shock. I figure the bonding helps prevent the possibility of lead in my meat. I could probably save some money and only buy Power Shok, but heck, at .50 a bullet more, I can handle spending an extra couple bucks a year to know I'm using quality ammo for my kills.
I had bought a ton of Remington Core-Lokt 30-30 for about $10.50 a box at wally world before covid hit they were blowing it out. Now any 30-30 is like $25 and up a box, usually over $30 a box
hey Tools I know this has nothing to do with 30-30 but about civil defense ammo 45 cal to be exact, at my range at 10 to 15 yards it was key hole ...ing on my. have you ever seen that? it was a Kimber 5 inch barrel....i thought my gun was messed up. I put regular ammo in and it was fine
i use the 150gr in 308 and 30-30 in the federal non typical soft points, which i think are basically the same thing as the power shocks in the blue box
🇦🇺😎👍Hey mate , love the Dirty Thirty….170 grainers are great 👍…the steel target is ringing like a church bell down here in Australia…those brands are pretty hexi down here…just about lit the jelly on fire….MAN 😳, savage entry…..it’s understandable how the 30 30 puts the game down…devastating results , love all those projectiles….fantastic results big guy….would be great to see how PPU would turn out ? …. That’s for that , bestest science videos on RUclips 🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸🏁
Not bad for a cartridge designed in 1895 as the first production smokeless powder cartridge. Never had a game animal run off after getting hit with one. I do prefer Winchester 150 grain Power Points. My Marlin doesn't like Federal rounds.
Awesome performance from both. 30WCF has been a great cartridge for over 100 years... Hard to believe you could buy that Federal Powershok for like 16.99 a box few years ago... over 25 a box at my Walmart niw., when they have some
Actually I liked the Henry 30-30. I have the Big Boy All Steal 20" in 44 Mag and 357 Mag. My next Henry is the 30-30 all steal 20". I like the Henry. I put the big loop lever on both guns. I was impressed with the way the 30-30 bullets expanded. I didn't think they would since no hollow point. Great video, Thanks!
Federal feud jelly time 😂 you’ve always got a good one for jelly time. I would say I only tune in to see what kind of jelly time it’s going to be but I’d be lying. Awesome video brother
The .30-30 with 170 grain bullets runs out of velocity before it runs out of bullet. You cant get a bullet failure at those speeds. Even with the 150 grain counterparts you usually get more expansion because of velocity while still hanging together fairly well, but they are more prone to fragmentation and weight loss. The Fusion and Hammer down bullets are very similar if not identical in their designs.
@@WayStedYou I assume that Speer probably is running a lot of the bullets that are going into Federal ammo these days. Very likely all 4 corporate divisions, Remington, Federal, CCI, and Speer are operating at full capacity and sharing whatever they need to keep the machines humming 24/7. Ive noted that many Speer bullets at Midway are out of stock and not available.
The only thing that keeps me from buying a Rossi is that safety. Same with current Marlins and their crossbolt looking safety right through the receiver.😆
Nice review. Had a guy call me Wednesday about 30-30; these are the two rounds I sent him links to. Oddly, at that place, that day, they were the same price. Fusion is usually 15~20% more in my experience
Great video. I use my 30-30 quite a bit and only 170gr ammo. I looked at penetration more than anything as I hunt in western Canada. Mostly hunt deer, mule and whitetail, black bear but from time to time elk do pop up and moose. Keep up the good videos.
The .30-30 is underrated. It isn’t fast or flat, but the bullets designed for that performance window work pretty much perfectly.
Yep
I couldn’t agree more! It doesn’t need more speed for that bullet design, just works well
Couldn’t agree more that’s what were using here at our Homestead for deer season this year😊
If it isn't flat then how am I always on target? I'm a budget hunter which means I don't need a $3000 gun to bag a my game
Yep. So many decades of hunting experience = the bullets are super dialed in at this point

Yeah, now JC Penny only sells sports bras and legging. They're going the way of K Mart.
Good thing is, you can actually find 30-30 ammo now 👍
I have the exact JC Penney purchased Winchester Model 94 rifle as well.
The best gun is your first gun. I still have my Mossberg Master Mag 20 Guage that has a stamp Coast to Coast Hardware on side plate from 70s.
I love 30-30 it's such a soft shooting cartridge and has plenty of power to take down bigger game. My dad's old Winchester Model 94 still shoots like a dream to this day
I love it too. Can't afford to shoot it anymore. $9 a box 3 years ago was fun.... $22-25 is wack. Went from a target gun to wall princess.
🤠👊
Mine used to do the same until I traded it at a gun show like an idiot for an SKS and $150. No, I didn’t get $150, I gave it. If only I had a time machine..
It was a 94 A. I traded it with the scope and $150
Soft shooting unless its in a light gun with metal buttplate lol. I get a sore shoulder with my little Sears model 54 with steel butt plate.
30-30 is amazing. It dumps so much energy quickly and still penetrates good. And its not a bear to handle!
The 30.30 is a tried and true round, you can't ever go wrong with it!✌️
Another awesome video, thank you!👍
The 30-30 has always been one of my favorites. Not a hot rod cartridge but gets the job done. Impressive results, thanks for the test Tools!

I'm sticking to basics😊 Walmart best place for 30-30 if you can find it. That blue box was 19.99
😎👊
That blue box special at Walmart is a bit higher price than it used to be. But it is still the cheapest.
The Power Shocks are widely available around my area. They are also cheaper than most. Glad to see good results from them

Haven't seen those. I have a Remington Woodsmaster in .30-06 @@rob6850
Federal Power SHOK 170gr is all I run with a dime size group at 50 and 100 yards (3 round group) with my Marlin 336CS. Great ammo for deer esp. in the brush. It’s a very flat shooting run out to 150 yards. But both were more than great. Great video. 👏🏻
Nice 😎
Im in North Dakota been using Remington 150 gr for over 40 years with Winchester pre 93 . Have made sum 200 yard shots . I practice on a nice flat dirt field to get my hold over . Make sure the hot brass don't land on the horses rear with a top eject 😊 .
🤠👊
Yes! This is the video I have been waiting on. Thank you! 👍
😎👊
Are there people not in the 30-30 camp? It's not a fancy cartridge, but it definitely has it's place.
Great Ammo test Tools for the 30 - 30 impressive. I usually run 150 grain for my model 94.
.30-30 is my favorite lever acrion round. Deer season is in, and when gun season comes in it "Looks like meats back on the table boys"! 🤣 You're a great shot with that Henry and scope combo as well!
Appreciate ya, brother!😎👊
Good stuff. Thanks!! 🙏💥👍

@@ToolsandTargetsThat's the best kind of legalized mushrooms you can have. 🍄
The power shok seems to be the one i would pick because im pretty sure they are cheaper
I don't have jelly , that would be neat to see🎉🎉🎉
The handy hunting carbine!
That gun works perfect with see thru sight's. That way you can use the regular sights and the scope.
True 😎👍
I had bought a ton of Remington Core-Lokt 30-30 for about $10.50 a box at wally world before covid hit they were blowing it out. Now any 30-30 is like $25 and up a box, usually over $30 a box
Looks like federal knows what they’re doing.
hey Tools I know this has nothing to do with 30-30 but about civil defense ammo 45 cal to be exact, at my range at 10 to 15 yards it was key hole ...ing on my. have you ever seen that? it was a Kimber 5 inch barrel....i thought my gun was messed up. I put regular ammo in and it was fine
Thank you for the data
i use the 150gr in 308 and 30-30 in the federal non typical soft points, which i think are basically the same thing as the power shocks in the blue box
I really like the consistency of the Fusion rounds…
It was slappin that steel good!🤠👊
Enjoyed the test Tools ! 30-30 is still a fantastic choice for hunting !
Thank you sir. Definitely is.😎👊
I love .30-30 in my Marlin, best round for shooting water jugs!
Not bad for a cartridge designed in 1895 as the first production smokeless powder cartridge. Never had a game animal run off after getting hit with one. I do prefer Winchester 150 grain Power Points. My Marlin doesn't like Federal rounds.
😎👊
Thank you sir. Love these Henry lever actions.🤠👍
Great video, the 30-30 does it again
Eu gosto muito do 3030 , um tiro gosto de praticar. Aprecio muito seus vídeos 👏👏
Obrigado, meu amigo. Ainda é um dos melhores calibres de ação de alavanca.😎👊
Probably the same speer projectile since they are all the same company.
The 44 magnun hammer down is a 270 grain speer deepcurl
@@WayStedYou I assume that Speer probably is running a lot of the bullets that are going into Federal ammo these days. Very likely all 4 corporate divisions, Remington, Federal, CCI, and Speer are operating at full capacity and sharing whatever they need to keep the machines humming 24/7. Ive noted that many Speer bullets at Midway are out of stock and not available.
Another great video 👊🏻
Thank you sir. Appreciate that!😎👊
Thanks for posting this. More old school round tests would be cool, if you have the time.
😎👊
Yes, I’ll definitely like the 170 fusion. That would definitely work well for me.😊
😎👊
Tools if you could hold a round that’s not fired up besides the fired bullet it would show the big difference buddy. Be safe GOD BLESS
😎👊
30-30 may be my favorite rifle round. I have have many others, but I just like 30-30 best
Love the 30-30 . I deer hunt with it yearly. I would have no problem using either. I use 150
Thank you for jell testing at 50 yards. Hunting pistol bullets should also be tested at this range.
Looking at picking up the new Rossi R95 in 30-30.
The only thing that keeps me from buying a Rossi is that safety. Same with current Marlins and their crossbolt looking safety right through the receiver.😆
@@ToolsandTargets Yeah, my Marlin 336 in .35 Rem is like that and I bought it new in the late 1980's.
Ahh, I figured it was a new thing since Ruger took over.@@pistolgrip44mag
Great video. I want a 30-30 rifle so bad.
Great video!
Thank you sir.😎👊
Thurdy is cool sold mine. Ammo ridiculously expensive for it. Went to 308. I can actually find the ammo where I live. Thx for the video!!!
You should test out Federal Premium 170grain .30-30 Nosler Partitions.
Textbook performance from both!
Excellent review. The 30-30 and Henry is a perfect match.
Great test I love my winchester 94, im thinking about picking up a henry x so I can run my suppressor on it.
Local RK has a .410 X Model in stock that was really tempting.😆
Nice review. Had a guy call me Wednesday about 30-30; these are the two rounds I sent him links to. Oddly, at that place, that day, they were the same price. Fusion is usually 15~20% more in my experience
That's usually what I see as far as price too. I was surprised how similar these performed on this one.😎👍
You have to do the Buffalo Bore 380 Barnes x tdc 80 grain
I have had good luck with both but in my experience that Federal Fusion has really shined for me. Have a good one brother see you on the next one.
Love me some bonded stuff.😎👊
Just found your channel. Fantastic review. New sub!
Definitely a underated round ..great video tools
Thank you sir.🤠👊
Great video. I use my 30-30 quite a bit and only 170gr ammo. I looked at penetration more than anything as I hunt in western Canada. Mostly hunt deer, mule and whitetail, black bear but from time to time elk do pop up and moose. Keep up the good videos.
Thank you sir. These look like some more good ones.😎👍
Good info, being 30-30 is one of my favorites! ❤
so I'm guessing the only difference between hammer down and and fusion is the nickel plated brass?
I shoot a Remington bolt action 308 power shok
is good but fusion 150 will print a tight clover leaf at 100 !
