    This has to be the best video ive ever seen on the 742. growing up it was my dream gun. i was blessed 10 yrs ago my father n law gifted me one with the price tag still attached to the trigger guard. never had a bullet ran through it. I also have a 308. I also owned several out of the box 7400's and never could get them to hit consistent. but my 742 has never failed.

    Thank you very much for this wealth of information that you give us.
    I have a Remington 742 and it shoots very well, 1/2 inch at 100 yards (The first 2 out of three bullets in the same hole.
    I did a test with the foreharm wanting to allow it to have a free space between the barrel and the foreharm. I noticed that the more I tightened the srew of the forharm the less space I wanted. So I decided to tighten the screw no more than 25 lbs to allow the barrel to move in its normal swing when firing. The result was spectacular.
    I kept with me the target at which I shot this weapon, I didn't believe it to see such a good result. This weapon is not made for rapid fire and must be cooled down after 5 bullets. Fernand

    Remington 742 Jam-o-matic. I have one that I bought in 1974 for $200. I took care of mine with regular maintenance although it woukd still jam on occasion. Took it to a gunsmith once who was familiar with the issue. He replaced parts and it hasn’t been a problem since. My oldest son has it now.

    Thank you for the history information on the Remington 742!! My son and I are big Remington fans and we both have the exact same rifles. We have the 742 BDL, 760 BDL, 700 BDL and even the 700 ADL. The 700 ADL is somewhat newer model because they have synthetic stocks. We also have the shotguns, like the Remington 1100, 870 Wingmaster and 870 Express. I even have an 870 slug gun. Then we have the 22's in 552 and 572, I have one in BLD grade and the other is what I call the ADL grade, and my son has the opposite of the ones I have. Then we have the Model 514 bolt action, I think that is the right number, I know it is old and it is a single shot 22. Again, you can see we love our Remington firearms. I loved hearing the history of the semi-auto, and your detail discussion of the 742. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    I use a Kleanbore 10” flexible cleaning rod with a 45 cal brush on it with Hoppes #9 to insert into chamber. Works great! If need be add a little steel wool wrapped on brush.

    I have a 742 in 30.06 and have had no issues. I clean it as mentioned earlier, carefully insert the rod from the muzzle and add the brush and mops at the chamber. No corrosion, little to no chatter and it shoots 1.5 to 2 inch groups depending on ammo. My best reloads are produced with a small base die.

    Just purchased another 750 today in 35 Whelen, rare, maybe ! I've had a 742 in 30-06 since 1980, and have taken great care of it, and to date never experienced an FTF or FTE. Really appreciate the in-depth review of this series of rifles. I learned a lot ! Thanks !!!

    The Remington 742 was my 1st deer 🦌 rifle in 243 Win. Still have it. Have hunted with and taken several animals with it. Love it. Still take it out every once in a while and hunt with it. Now mainly hunt with a Remington 700 CDL in 270.

    I inherited my father's. He only shot Ball M2 type loads. What I mean is he bought cases of Ball M2 and replaced to bullet with Rem Corelokt of the same weight. He removed the barrel nut and cleaned the barrel and action after shooting. He shot it and hunted it for decades. The action looks great. No chattering. Rails are great. Shoots 3 in a small cloverleaf and the 4th an inch away. It wears a Leupold 3x9. Love it

    I have a 742 in .06 and it does show the chatter marks in the action. My question is, would that affect accuracy? It holds a 2 inch or better group at 100 yards right now. Not bad, but could it get worse because of that over time?

    • @BTORange
      @BTORange  10 месяцев назад +5

      Won't impact accuracy, but may cause problems with extraction, ejection and/or feeding. I would suggest having a gunsmith rebuild the bolt latch to help prevent the problem from getting worse.

    Excellent video. More details and information in this one video than every other Remington 74 Auto rifles on RUclips.
    When I was looking to find the right deer rifle in the mid ‘80’s it was a toss up between the BAR and the Remington.
    Caliber had to be .270, because I was using bolts in that caliber and had lots of ammo and reloading gear.
    I’d owned the 760 but the semi was better for the type of chased game, option for multiple animals.
    The 7400 bought new in 85, still functions flawlessly with lots of extreme weather and use, and proper maintenance.
    Several people in our camp use them, no one has ever experienced any kind of malfunction.
    I will find a deluxe model in .270 to add to the collection.

    A most informative and helpful video, thank you. I've always been intrigued by the 742 series but often heard disparaging things about them (especially the .30-06 versions). I had been considering bidding on a very nice looking 742 in .308 from an auction house too far away for me to visit and personally inspect the gun myself (my preference). Thanks to you video, I now know enough to pass on this one; way too many potential gremlins and congenital problems in these guns to make that a wise proposition.

    I personally like 742 Woodsmaster and think its misunderstood by most, like you said they simply require more maintenance than your average bolt rifle. I've had in my possession two different 742's that were chambered in 243 Winchester, both of them had some very mild chatter marks on the receiver rails. However they were not bad enough to hinder operation.

    I could imagine the newly resurrected REM arms Rifle company will never make a semi auto like this even the later models just because it looks overly complex and hard to maintain with parts
    Sure as a collectible on commercial rifles is good to have, but as a shooter, it looks overly complex and very delicate thank you for pointing this out. I have avoided this particular product and like you, I was alive and part of the shooting public when this rifle was in its prime as a, newly manufactured rifle

    Shot my first deer with 742 woodsmaster. 30-06. Great gun. Couple years ago it started jamming. Had a gunsmith break it down, clean every single part. Said if it still jammed, its the magazine. Well it still jams. Having trouble finding magazines fir it. Well atleadt original 4 round ones. Any info where i could get one, at a decent price. Have had people tell me i can use other caliber magazines. Im not a gun expert but just doesnt siund like it would work as good as the original one. Any help or info would be appreciated. Thank you

    • @BTORange
      @BTORange  5 месяцев назад +1

      "Decent price" is a relative term. Expect to spend about $100 on an OEM magazine. Magazines for the Remington 740, 742, 7400, Sportsman 74 and 750 in calibers 30/06, .280 and .270 should be workable. Ther earlier guns had magazines that were single-caliber marked but by the Model 7400 they were marked with multiple caliber designations. The Model 760/7600 magazines in a long-action caliber should work but will not hold the bolt back on the last shot.

    Couldn't you clean the chamber by inserting a bare cleaning rod from the muzzle and then screw on the chamber brush and pull it back into the chamber to clean it and then unscrew it in order to remove it. You would of course have to use great care not to damage the muzzle and crown area.

      @@BTORange BTW, when reloading for these 740 to 750 series rifles, or any auto loaders recommend ordering the resiging dies for automatics. These are slightly tighter, leavening clearance to ensure your rifle will go into full battery. Also, I keep a can of spray on solvent. PB blaster* After firing it, I squirt some in the chamber and let it run out the barrel. Sqiirt, some in the action and work it a few times. Wipe off the excess and spary some chrome metal polish, which is a none moister attracting light oil.*1 That flushes the solvents out and leaves a nice lube and protection. Wipe off the excess. It's the lazy man's way of keeping my auto loaders clean. And rust free. * 1 can be purchased at the dollar store for about $5.
