Because some films aren't old - they're just waiting to be rediscovered.
The most savage western ever made
A shocking blend of romance and gut-wrenching carnage, this revisionist western dared to expose America's darkest truths, from the Sand Creek Massacre to parallels with Vietnam's My Lai tragedy. Banned, buried, and nearly forgotten, Soldier Blue is one of the most savage and divisive films Hollywood ever made.

This Western Was Blacklisted for Decades

This 1949 Western was so brutal it got banned for decades. Shot-for-shot, it remade a gangster classic but swapped city streets for the ruthless frontier - and made lawmen look like monsters while turning outlaws into doomed heroes. Europe called it "dangerous" and blacklisted it. But now? It’s one of the greatest noir Westerns ever made. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit that bell icon ...

The '90s were a wild time for cinema, especially in the wake of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. Suddenly, every director with a taste for gritty dialogue and nonlinear storytelling was trying to capture that same lightning in a bottle. Most of these films faded into obscurity, but every now and then, one resurfaces and reminds us why the '90s were such a goldmine for edgy, offbeat cinema. Don...
5 Westerns Sergio Leone Wanted You to See

Known as the godfather of the spaghetti western, Sergio Leone redefined the genre with A Fistful of Dollars, sparking a movement that gave dusty saloons and shootouts a distinctly European edge. It's no shock, then, that Leone's favorite films reflect the genre he revolutionized. Every pick is a western or, at the very least, a film steeped in the spirit of the frontier. The Only Western Adaptations Hollywood Didn't Screw Up

The Western genre owes its staying power to its literary backbone. Unlike some painfully bad book-to-film adaptations (looking at you, other genres), many Western adaptations tend to respect their source material. Sure, there are plenty of examples out there, but only a handful actually hit the bullseye. You might also like: 10 John Wayne Westerns That Still Hold Up in 2024 ruclips.net/video/Z0...

A truly great war film doesn't just show you battles; it makes you rethink what war means, why it happens, and what it costs. With that kind of emotional and intellectual impact, you'd think war movies would dominate the Best Picture category, especially in years when the competition is underwhelming. But nope - it rarely works out that way. You might also like: 10 best war movies directed by a...

Clint Eastwood names "the worst movie ever made"
Wow, no mention of the 1942 movie Wake Island which recieved 2 Oscars, which also, is the only US made WW2 movie that depicted what was actually happening at Wake Island prior to being taken over by the Imperial Japanese Navy.
the 13th warrior is a masterpiece..............well worth the time spent watching it for sure.
Forget Vietnam. Sand Creek was a shameful low point in American history. However disgusting this movie makes the massacre out to be, it was worse. Members of the Colorado militia cut the private parts out of Indian women and wore them on their heads in a parade celebrating the "victory" in downtown Denver. You can read about it in Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.
Oscars are too woke for war
Loved this movie
There's no film or tv drama showing anything like the level of savagery indulged in by Red Indians. Try mentioning that oh context free one.
Great list. One classic you missed is 'The Battle of Algiers' from 1966. Winner of the Golden Lion at the 1966 Venice Film Festival and nominated for three Oscars® (Best Director/ Screenplay and Foreign Picture), The Battle of Algiers is a unique ground-breaking film revered by filmmakers such as Ken Loach, Chris Nolan and Spike Lee! The film is shot in a gritty documentary style, with remarkable crowd scenes, it features the then pioneering use of amateur actors including real-life guerrilla fighter Saadi Yacef (who went on to coproduce the film) all adding to the film s realism. To date, the film is used by military organisations including the Pentagon to offer insights in to guerrilla strategy and the effects of foreign occupation.
How in the world was Stalingrad (1993) left off your list? And Downfall, although nominated should have definitely won as Best Foreign.
It was a terrible massacre, but the US Cavalry did not kill the Indians. Typical Hollywood bullshit. I saw the movie at the drive-in. Very disturbing.
Isn't this more of a war movie than a western?
The movie is of course not historically accurate. As already said it is a Viet Nam war allegory. While the Sand Creek massacre did indeed occur, it was not done by the US Army. Rather it was committed by the 3rd Colorado Volunteers, a cavalry regiment of 90 day enlistees (mostly out of work miners and roustabouts) led by a sometime pastor named John Chivington. They were nearing the end of their enlistment and Chivington wanted to do something "big" to make a big splash in territorial politics. No other Cheyenne were within reach so he led the attack on a friendly village. Afterwards the regular army filed charges against Chivington. It's been way too many years since I have seen the movie (I am of Viet Nam war age myself) so I don't remember how much of the real aftermath was told in the movie.
Buffet saint Marie
It's ironic that when making films about other nations transgressions, Hollywood often exaggerates and sometimes wholly invents 'atrocities' that never even happened (about 99% of Braveheart for instance). Yet when it comes to US atrocities, they often omit them all together or seriously downplay them. And not just Hollywood. I saw a certain degree of irony in a news article I read today, about the US prosecuting Indian pharmaceutical companies, when Union Carbide were never allowed to face justice for the disaster in India (despite the execs being sentenced in abstentia by the India courts).
Comedy films are also snubbed for Oscars. Some of the Oscar winning films are in my top ten "Most boring movie, I ever watched." list.
A movie should be made about the fort mims massacre.
I saw Soldier Blue on late night tv when I was probably too young to watch such a movie. Yes, the massacre scene hit hard.
I remember seeing the film poster back in 1970, wasn't the tag-line on it something like "HOW THE WEST WAS REALY WON" or words to that effect. Anyway, I was 11 when Soldier Blue was shown at the flicks here in the UK, so it was about 1978 there abouts when I first saw it on VHS, or when it was first shown on TV. WOW! I'd heard about how violent it was but the massacre of the Cheyanne at the end still had an impact on me, and if I decide to pop the DVD on I watch it I watch it alone, my missis just refuses to watch it.
No film will ever be made of the unspeakable bloody acts against colonials on the frontier in the 1600s-1700s. Or that of Comanches against Mexicans and Texans from the 1600s thru the 1800s. The massacres of Whites on Reds are named and remembered. The massacres of Reds on Whites are too numerous to name and almost never told.
Patton; tried to watch it twice and fell asleep both times. 😴😴😴
John Ford is nothing compared to Sergio Leone.
And the most left wing anti American The native Indian was just as savage even more
Oh shut up. They were being driven off their land and killed by the immigrants. Don't even try to justify anything with what-about-isms.
And i thought the wildbunch was the most violent western ever ! This movie make it tame in comparison!
No wonder Simmons went on to form Kiss, after that experience
Dunkirk was crap.
Saw it and it in my opinion the most honest Western made. Watch the Custers last stand movies and documentaries with a sense of glee and satisfaction.
Not really. It's a crap movie. A take on the redeemed hostage tale, one of the oldest in American culture, with a splatter movie pasted on at the end to lend it significance. "Little Big Man" did the whole thing so much better a few years later.
I echo the comments. Hostiles will go down as one of those movies that will pick up the respect it deserves years from now. It was a brilliant movie.
I love Sam Peckerpah
IEEEEE!!!
This film is ruthless. Absolutely ruthless.
Candice Bergan should have won a Razzie as worst actress. Overblown and terrible. Never understood why Strauss didn't shoot her! How did his character tolerate her.
I saw the movie in a theatre in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada with a couple of white friends surrounded by local Inuit and Dene people. After the movie, we skulked out of the theatre, heads down, followed by some very dirty looks and not a few menacing growls. I don't think I've ever felt smaller in my whole life.
Does nobody on RUclips know how to pronounce My Lai? The first syllable is pronounced "me," to rhyme with "see" and "be."
Jesse's girls was Also a violent western thanks
Hostiles is as violent as I'd want to see-in-theatres ..!
You know, sometimes I really wonder about Eberts and Siskel’s reviews…
I went out to Sand Creek a couple years ago. Just to see it. Completely silent, no wind, no birds, nothing. Only thing I could hear was my own heartbeat. Haunted.
Seen it when it came out. At the local drive in
Well, I agree on ‘Jarhead .’ And Steel Helmet. Thanks for making me think!
I saw it, love it. I couldn't stop watching Virginia Mayo,,,,🥹
Candice Bergen's accent is also out of place...
A very powerful film.
I have been lucky enough to see all 5 performances that were nominated the year when John Wayne won. 1. Hoffman & Voight were in the same movie and may well have split that urban, gritty, new-wave kinda vote. 2. O'Toole, so sad he never won, but he was terrible in the Mr Chips reboot. Sorry, he just was. 3. Burton was fine but I never believed him as Henry VIII. 4. By 1969 everyone, and I mean everyone, was doing a John Wayne parody. So why shouldn't Wayne have a crack at it?
Uh, they were not soldiers, they were territorial volunteers, meaning, go to a bar, buy everyone a drink and promise some dollars and more whisky and "lets go kill some injuns". Also, anyone mention tobacco pouches? There is a LOT of the old west censored, hidden and wokefied.
0:48 In terms of never working with Andrew McLaglen again, his film work largely shifted to police detective stories and The Shootist where he worked with the great Don Siegel. Are you sure that didn't have more to do with his changing directors?
It wasn’t remotely banned in any way. It made a small splash in its day, but it was in retrospect a “red exploitation” film that required white people tell a white story based on contemporary Viet Nam protests. Today we would consider it more comical (in an insulting way) then “scandalous.”
Banning by ignoring it and threatening theaters was used. Only in the last 40 years has outright censorship raised it's ugly head by the left wingers who control our universities, our media, our government and our schools now. There are 2-3 generations of American now who've never lived under a real free society and media.
It was a attack on the vetnam war in Western drag
My Lai comes to mind. Us hippies were furious, disgusted and wanted accountability. It was swept under the military sewer rug until it couldn't be swept any more.
--- NO NOT REALLY . . . "Soldier Blue" is just showing the people of the U.S. the GENOCIDE REQUIRED for Manifest Destiny to be real, just like the colonial "stewardship" required by and for The Asians for their promotion to capitalist utility in a businessman's ledger of assets and liabilities. As in the colonial enslavement of the Viet folk, if a coloured man or a coloured woman refused biblically-justified enslavement then he and she are killed, as "Communists". A Western economic message easy to understand, thus the sociologic NECESSITY of the film "Soldier Blue" (1970), y'know a looking glass for U.S. society.
I'm gonna look for this. Never heard of it and I'm an old man who watches old movies.
Me to. 🤔
So accurate depictions bothered people then, as well. I've read Blood Meridian and that isn't so subtle.
Reading real tales of the old west written by pioneers and people at the time, would make you want to boot every "native american" off their reservations and fend for themselves. Unfortunately, a sobbing Native on a horse overlooking the pollution that the horrible white man has done is the left wing revisionist narrative in ALL our schools.
I first saw this on TV, but couldn't remember much of it. Recently acquired as a download from Microsoft store(so legal) Yeah... the final scene is horrific, as it's meant to be. Of course, I no longer have any illusions about the Old West, so it didn't come as quite a gutpunch. I'd heard of the massacre, but not the horrific details.
TV!!!??? You do know that version, with all the censorship, was only 2 minutes long?
@@mutteringmale No doubt. I only remembered a few scenes.. it's possible \I might have missed even an edited ending.
@@brunozeigerts6379 Yah, just try watching The Wild Bunch on tv. Be about 3 minutes long.
