One thing film school graduates have to learn is that you don't always have to give the characters 'depth' and the story 'greater meaning'. Sometimes you just want to see the cowboy in a bar brawl or trying to deal with a woman that's as stubborn as he is;). That's the sort of thing John Wayne did brilliantly and, when John Ford was directing, he could also act. In the hands of a director whose ambition outstripped his ability though it was a waste of talent.

0:48 In terms of never working with Andrew McLaglen again, his film work largely shifted to police detective stories and The Shootist where he worked with the great Don Siegel. Are you sure that didn't have more to do with his changing directors?

Looking at his output in the 70's, many of his films seemed somewhat out of date. THE COWBOYS is an interesting film, and also his last, THE SHOOTIST. The later was the only film that I saw with him in a movie theater. How found it kind of noty very modern for the time, but over the years have liked it a little bit more. Though I consider it one of those geriatric films, and most certainly not as good as RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY.

Shame that this led to Wayne falling out with Andrew McLaglen for they made some good films together.

Technically correct but Wayne's roll never was a father figure and never will be, which was the character he portrays. Still.....not one of his best , father or otherwise? A fan. 👍

Nothing was worse than Rio Lobo’s pitiful acting by several of his co-stars (except for Jack Elam).
