A glaring omission is William Wellman who was a fighter pilot in the First World War. He was shot down in combat and survived the crash landing with a fractured skull and his jaw in about 18 pieces. Didn’t Wellman direct the first Academy Award winning film “Wings”. WW also directed “Battleground” about the 101 ST Airborne Division at the Battle of the Bulge/ Bastogne. Wellman s last film I think was Lafayette Escradrille about fighter pilots in WW1. Starring Tab Hunter and Clint Eastwood. John Boormans Hope and Glory is Automatical film about his own experiences living in London during the Blitz1940- Sarah Miles played his mother,Ian Bannen played his grandfather.Sebastian Rice Edwards played John as a young boy I thought Ring Lardner JR wrote the script for MASH. As others have noted Samuel Fuller Director of The Big Red One is autobiographical. Robert Carradine the narrator is playing Samuel Fuller as a young soldier in North Africa,Sicily,Italy and 🇫🇷 France.According to Carradine in an interview with Rob Word” WOW” Word on Westerns. About 50 minutes of lost footage was found and the film was restored to what writer/ Director Samuel Fuller originally wanted the movie to be about a 3- hour epic.
Clint Eastwood ditched in a TBM Avenger, not a TBD Devastator. William Wyler was awarded the Legion of Merit and Air Medal but not the Purple Heart, although he did suffer hearing loss from his wartime service. Conspicuous by absence, WWII veteran Richard Attenborough, A Bridge Too Far; WWI veteran William Wellman, Wings, The Story of GI Joe, Battleground; WWI veteran Lewis Milestone, Pork Chop Hill, All Quiet on the Western Front; Samuel Fuller, The Steel Helmet, Fixed Bayonets, Merrill’s Marauders, The Big Red One.
Wrote the movie U571 based on his own experiences? That movie can not be based on anyone's experiences as it is a travesty, a gross distortion of the truth and is utterly dishonest

Wait, what about Samuel Fuller? He directed The Big Red One, based on his wartime experiences.

I've imagined American sailors walking into the British Admiralty. 'Look, we've captured an Enigma machine!'
"Well done... put it with the others.'
His own experiences must have been in a dream for that script!
Eh ... he was on a submarine ... it's got submarines in it ...
.
I had never heard about Clint Eastwood being in a plane crash and having to swim two miles to get to safety.
