      @MarksBackyardBirds 18 минут назад

      I know in our area, the scissor-tails tend to be driven off nesting sites by the Western Kingbirds. The kingbirds have been expanding eastward for many years and where they overlap, the scissor-tails tend to lose out. Sad.

    Excellent video! Thank you so much for sharing. Texas Master Naturalist in training here 😊 I currently make my own seed logs and I place them on feeders that are too small/unstable for starlings. They try to perch to feed, but eventually give up. Additionally, planting native plants and shrubs will attract native birds with their natural food sources and provide shelter for nesting and protection from predators.

    I bought a homestead in Maine and the 1st year here I took an Adult Ed Woodworking class and made about 6 bluebird houses. Well not knowing a whole lot about the invasive English Sparrows, well they “Claimed all the houses!” Fast forward 29 years and retirement I started researching WHY even though I saw Bluebirds every year but never had been able to get any to nest in the houses. Even when I kept destroying the nests they would still reclaim all the boxes. My researching led me to NOT throw corn out for my chickens and actually I don’t throw scratch feed either. SO I decided to trap them. Immediately this year I had bluebirds and even this year in Central Maine they stayed overwinter. I am so glad that I trapped them this year rather than loads of them I’ve only seen one or 2 pairs and the Bluebirds are holding their own still claiming the same box they used last year.

    I have a cage feeder that has worked the best except when we had a young squirrel that could squeeze in through the bottom of the cage last summer. I had to take it down for a few weeks because he got stuck in there once when I was coming out to fill the feeders. Once he got a bit older he didn’t fit anymore. I have a squirrel buster feeder also but because the hangers on our pole are only about eight inches long the squirrels can hang onto the pole and lean over to scoop food out of the feeder without having to touch the metal perch that is supposed to close the feeder. When I am home I spend much of the day chasing squirrels off the pole. I have a baffle but they can jump six feet off the roof and land above the baffle. These critters can fly! I have a pole that has longer hanging rods but it can’t be put up until spring. They will probably find a way to outsmart it anyway. 🙄

    I'm in the UK and have goldfinches in my garden. They will only go to the feeder with just nyjer seed, even though the other feeder has sunflower hearts and other small seeds. They are obsessed with the nyjer seeds and on really cold days sometimes just sit on the feeder for hours eating constantly. I'm thinking of mixing a few sunflower seeds in for extra nutrition after watching this.

    We have a lot of Mockingbirds in central Okla year round. One spring, we had a nest of them in our neighbor's backyard. We couldn't go into our backyard without the Mockingbird immediately appearing and following us around. We named him Sentinel. It was pretty funny! Thanks for the tip about the suet recipe! We have Carolina Wrens also, so that sounds like a recipe birds here will love. We named our backyard 'Birdzhaven'! Lol

    @timothylongmore7325 2 дня назад

    I put out suet only in cold weather. I'm also a deer hunter and save all the suet off the carcas for suet. I'll cut it into squarish chunks and freeze in ziplocks. I don't spend a lot of time trimming it either. There will be some meat and connective tissue. What they don't finish my dogs are waiting patiently for. The store bought is a little softer at low temps so I'll try to put that out. We also feed a couple crows our kitchen scraps and our chickadees started coming out so now I put out some bread crumbs for them.

    • @MarksBackyardBirds
      @MarksBackyardBirds 2 дня назад

      @@leebrown1805 It really depends on the bag of seed. Some companies do use Canary Grass seeds and other junk fillers. You can check the label but seeds like millet get tossed on the ground a lot as many of the "feeder" birds do not like it and the sparrows who do like it, prefer it on the ground. Millet looks like a small corn stalk when it is growing and that is a good candadate for what you are seeing.
