Cypress & Sparrow Homestead

Welcome to the channel! We are Austin & Sarah.
This channel exists to document our journey of learning how to live a more self-sufficient life and to share the honest truth about the challenges and the joys we face on this journey.
The two of us grew up as city kids and after we got married realized we dreamed of living a simpler and more self-sufficient life in the country. We jumped at the opportunity to pack our bags and buy our little piece of heaven in the beginning of 2021.
We have a lot to learn and we hope that you will join us on this adventure!

First time watching your video. Loved it. Your homestead looks so nice and breezy.
Great video! I am glad to see young people outside in the yard or garden. I would definitely try to save the seeds from that huge cucumber. I would make relish from it as well. Happy gardening! ❤
Peel and cut the cucumbers up, put them in a blender with water and you have agua de pepino (cucumber "spa" water) & it's so yummy and hydrating! Also, make one of those viral cucumber salads. I personally love them with lemon salt and tajin but any fruit seasoning would do. You could also cut and freeze them up for a self care spa day or for a tangy smoothie, or make cucumber ice cubes and add them to your water once in a while. ps. anytime our family has fruit that is overripe and about to go bad, we just cut it up and add it to a blender with water and drink that with our meals instead of soda, tea, water. it usually last only a couple of days with a family of four plus occasional family guest. SOOO when in doubt, make a agua fresca out of it.
We bought the biggest chipper we could afford/justify the expense for. There were dozens of smaller, used one weekend or season units offered on FB, but we needed something powerful enough to handle good sized branches for land clearing.
Yeah we are in the same boat, want to find something we can afford but can also get the job done. Thanks for the feedback!
Hi
Hello!
Great video!, it will be better if there is no background music.
Thanks!
Hello from Australia - your honesty and talking from the heart was awesome. It was just what I needed to watch today - you came up as watch next after I watched another garden show. Im currently on the lounge with a bad back so im very glad I have all raised beds however Im very frustrated watching you tube and wanting to get out there and plant my seeds before tomorrows rain arrives. However another day will work out too. Happy Homesteading and im looking forward to watching my videos of your journey
Hi
Thanks for the kind words and wishing you a speedy recovery!
You could store the grern pnes for seed potato
That’s the plan!
We have a Jensen wood chipper and it's fantastic! I would recommend not buying the smallest cheapest wood chipper...ask me how I know! We use the chips in the garden and in the chicken coop!
Thanks for the recommendation, will have to check them out!
Hi i'm from Michigan a first time gardener i love it's so much fun . and your right much cheaper. i just scribed to your channel i really enjoyed watching. Can i ask what state your in?
Thanks for watching and we are in Western Wisconsin so not too far!
Thanks for the video. So real! You are giving your little one the best gift he could ever have! Off target question but what color is the green at the end of the video? It’s beautiful!
Thanks so much for the kind words! Shoot I don’t remember the exact color but it was from Behr (Home Depot)
You got a beautiful homestead keep pushing we here for support.😅
Thanks so much!
Hugs from Poland ❤
Hugs from America 😊
Well done. I’m do a similar thing in Queensland Australia. 😊😊😊
Awesome, thanks for watching and good luck on your journey!
A lot of herbs are perrenials
Make relish
I think we will!
Great video 😊 How many plants gave you 100 pounds of tomatoes? I am thinking about that for next year. Were they paste tomatoes?
Thanks! We had about 16 plants with a combination of Amish Paste, Roma, San Marzano, and some beefsteak!
@@CypressSparrowHomestead thanks 😊
I put cucumbers in my morning smoothies. I’ve puréed them and then frozen the puree in ice cube shapes. I’ve also just sliced and frozen and added the slices to my smoothie. It’s so refreshing.
Thanks a great idea, going to have to try that!
I’ve been watching homesteading videos on utube for maybe 6 months now. The benefits of this lifestyle are many. I can’t believe after watching so many of them that this was the first time I actually noticed how everyone looks so healthy. Not like most Americans. 💪👍
Lol.😂yep
Wow thanks I appreciate that compliment! One of the driving forces to live this lifestyle was to be healthier!
I think tzatziki sauce is made with cucumbers, isn't it? That is good on like gyros and other Greek food. It's so freaking good
We love tzatziki!
I'm enjoying your journey. Thanks.
We appreciate it, thanks for following along!
We left the city in 2020 also. In our case, we had to "retire early" because our employers were mandating certain things we weren't going along with. It was a difficult and expensive choice, but God has blessed us in so many ways. We started our off grid homestead in fall of 2020 and recently started a channel to share info for others who might be looking to do the same. There are so many ways to move toward self-sufficiency! However you do it, just do it and don't wait to start. :-) I wish we had started a long time ago! Good for YOU!
That is ridiculously frustrating to hear, I'm sorry for that but hopefully put you guys on a better path. Best of luck and off grid is another level for us so right back at ya, Good for YOU!
We really enjoy your channel. We're off grid - just celebrated FOUR YEARS - and there's always so much to learn! You just don't know what you don't know until you know you don't know it - and then it's too late! :-) Some things you can only learn through trial and error. Hopefully the mistakes aren't too expensive and no one gets hurt. We look at most things we do as "experimental" - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but we always learn a lot. Great videos! Keep it up!
Try, fail, learn, get better, repeat :) Thanks for watching and good luck on your journey!
Dig deeper for sweet potatoes 🍠
Sadly there weren't any more hidden down there!

those tiny potatoes will be gone in like two weeks at most, a ay if you cook for a big family dinner. For what you may ask? Beef rendang, which is Minang traditional food that covers Indonesia for most part but also Malaysia. We have a version that includes small-tiny potatoes and it's an absolute delight if you like a strong tasting dishes with tons of herb and spices, kinda curry-like.
We love curry so we are going to have to check this dish out for sure, thanks!
Yeah, gardening is a learning experience every year. Wishing you the best of luck. ♥
Much appreciated!
Thank you! This is a great video. Very helpful. We’re a few months away from making the leap and taking in all of the information that we can.
Not trying to poach viewers, but I saw your comment. We're off grid and have a channel showing what works for us. Maybe it'll have useful info for you. Good luck!
Best of luck, keep learning and you won't regret it!
You can still eat green potatoes. Not all green potatoes necessarily have solanine, and some potatoes that aren’t green CAN have solanine. It’s about what light they are subject to. If it's a reddish light that lands on the potato, it will make chlorophyll, giving the potato a green colour. If the potato is hit by bluish or ultraviolet light, it will make solanine, by a completely separate chemical pathway. But the potato itself will not change colour. If the light contains both red and blue, the two processes can happen at the same time.
Fascinating I never knew this, going to go look this up and learn more, thanks for the tip!
The green potatoes are good for seed potatoes, but dont store them inside the house, i would put them in a basket in the garage or basement if you have just a few green ones. Dont store them with the regular potatoes either. The small potatoes will sprout and they make good seed potatoes too.
Thats the plan! To use them for seed to potatoes next year, thanks for watching!
Coffee first always. 😉
Always😊
Good fram❤
Thanks!
I dont use cardboard because it has the ink and glue. I compromise and use the brown packing paper
We tried to use the least amount of inked cardboard we could but I understand where your coming from!
It's simple but its not easy
Well said, definitely not easy!
Tomato's are also a fruit.... so if tomato is a fruit is ketchup a smoothie? 😂😂😂
Haha you're out here blowing minds with that one😂
Great points- especially the concept of deciding where you want to end up after all the work. A good concept to even apply to disagreements with people: "Start where you want to end up". I'd buy high quality tools that will last, infrastructure before animals (seems like common sense, but we got too excited lol), and free range birds (chickens, turkeys ect.) mean poop everywhere! so I think next time we'll do poultry netting from premier one because I like walking barefoot and hate the thought of all of the poo in my house! also animals that cost little to feed: sheep, geese and turkeys! find excess apples, pumpkins from locals and Co-ops to feed the critters. I'm excited to keep infrastructure closer to the house next time around- saves time, energy and better to keep an eye on things.
Great points! We are eyeing premier one fencing for that exact reason. 25 chickens means poop everywhere. Also we are lucky to get organic "old" produce from our local co-op to feed our birds, helps us save a ton on feed!
I loved your Point about networking, I think that most people from the cities dont know the value of cummunities and what they can add to your live. (Coming from a city dweller lol). I have met most people in my complex and try to be on a good basis with them. It already paid off by them getting packages, watering the plants while i am away etc.. Kind regards
Definitely one thing we didn't think enough about when we started but now trying to be more involved in our community! Thanks for watching!
Really informative video! You saved a lot of people time and money. Well done 👍 👏💪
Appreciate it!
I completely agree with all of these. Especially the point to take some time to understand what you want to achieve with your homestead. We dove in and did it all- chickens, dogs, sheep, cows, llamas, garden, orchard. Nothing in place, just lots of ambitions haha! We had animals getting out, gardens and trees dying and like you stated lots of unfinished projects. We are on year 5 and finally are focusing on the stuff that matters and benefits us the most, and we enjoy the most as well. Which for us is the animals. Specifically to supply us with our meat. Which comes back to the point of, take some time! Observe and make stuff semi-permanent, because i have removed and changed fencing so many times, which if i tried semi permanent wouldnt have been such a headache. I've reflected on these mistakes and try to do that as much as possible now going forward.
Takes a brave person to add all of those right away! But Im sure you learned immensely. I think you hit the nail on the head focusing on the stuff that matters and is most beneficial. Best way I can frame it is we starting homesteading because it was fun and now I feel like we homestead for a purpose. Best of luck to you guys!
@@CypressSparrowHomestead we have learned a lot! Best of luck to you as well, I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Can I ask what do you do for living? Like do you have normal 9-5 job, cuz you need an income source, right?
Yes I work a 9-5 tech job, Sarah is a web designer, so fortunately both are remote and "normal" jobs. We do not bring in income from our homestead. Income is a huge consideration when thinking about homesteading, especially if you are in an industry that requires someone to be on-site.
Even waiting the first year to see what the seasons do around the property could be super beneficial
If you have the patience I agree! We do not though 😅
I had to plan before I could even think of buying not really a mistake you can make when you can't afford anything. I'm just trying to use financing to change from renting to at least rent-to-own so all this money going towards surviving doesn't just go to total waste.
Rent-to-own is more expensive than waiting until you can afford paying with cash. Do the math before you get sucked into this money wasting cycle.
@@dawn19maria depends on your rate, yes my truck is much more but it’s still on par with what you would be paying for vehicle now 50k for a decent 4x4 truck. My land will be much cheaper just because of the deal I found, got 40 acres when I could have paid more for just 1/2-1 acre. Owner financing is much cheaper than traditional loans. I tried to buy a cheaper used vehicle outright but then I spent double what I paid for it trying to get it registered locally and ended up getting screwed with zero work done when it was supposed to be a small easy fix. Trying to save tens to hundreds of thousands 100-200 at a time because you have to survive then it’s worth it to spend a little more to one day own it when it will take 30 years to save the cash for it. You need to enjoy your life too, not just be miserable the entire time to one day think you will be happy from a thing. Cash is always king but most people don’t have any these days when you experience 15 years of inflation in just 2 years.
Renting has it's place, especially nowadays with the price of everything. But there are still good deals out their just takes wayyyyy more patience because they are a dime a dozen. Good luck!
Some good advice. Thanks.
Appreciate it, thanks for watching!
