Haste Ye Books
Великобритания
Добавлен 2 апр 2021
Hi! I'm Camila and I love books - writing them, reading them and talking about them.
I read a bit of everything, but especially contemporary novels, romance, classics, world literature, but generally try to focus on female authors. On the channel, my content includes book recommendations, monthly wrap ups, with more to come.
Why is my channel called Haste Ye Books? It's a play on word based on the Scottish expression "haste ye back" meaning come back soon.

The Booker Longlist is here! Note: I say I heard of Tommy Orange because of the New York Times best Book of the 21st Century, but in fact I heard about it because people said he was most definitely missing from the list. Bookstagrammers did a list of their 102 best books (which was a lot more transparent and diverse) and Orange was on that list: surabhi.reading

Victorian Literature Journey Tag & Victober Wrap Up
Happy reading! ♥️
The Immortal Life of Henrietta was very good but it also made me sad...Paris would certainly fit under path! I'm trying to decide on my list now. 🥰
How about „Path“ for Bittersweet?:) like finding a path through sorrow to something positive
I don't do the prompts because they are confusing to me. 🤔😊
I like the way you managed to match your books to the prompts! Throughout this year I read an average of 39% nonfiction (61% fiction) according to Storygraph and I don’t think I will change my habits for Nonfiction November… but I love hearing about what nonfiction titles other people are reading for pleasure.
Quiet was a book that was so validating and empowering ♥️ I like your interpretations of the prompts! Henrietta is a great book. It was earth shattering for me 15 years (?) ago. The ‘powers-that-be’ secrets and lies and underhandedness filled me with sorrow.
I’m happy to hear you are reading Tomb of Sand: I loved it! Split Tooth and Spilexm are both excellent choices for the Read Across Canada challenge. I listened to them in audio as well as reading print editions-in any format they are fabulous.
(Thank you for saying that about Eleanor Catton, I get so annoyed that she gets nominated for all the Canadian awards!) Such an interesting challenge! One of my fave reads: Adrift by Brideau who is a BC author and the book is set in BC, if you need another BC option (it fits your mystery/thriller genre category too). It's really smart climate fiction with a strong mystery at the core. It just won the Evergreen Award, is a finalist for some mystery/crime awards too. I loved it and wish more people were talking about it! :)
Realised I forgot to comment last night. I want to do this challenge next year. ❤
What a great challenge! I re as Five Little Indians which was really good. A book that I saw heavily advertised by my library is Hotline by Dimitri Nasrallah, I haven’t read it myself but I heard good reviews! It takes place in MTL in the 80s
I asked my Canadian friend about writers from PEI, and she suggested Valerie Compton (Tide Road). I guess she now lives elsewhere, but she was born and grew up on PEI.
Oh my gosh thank you so much! Sounds perfectly up my alley, added it to my tbr!
Thank you so much for doing this! Really enjoyed hearing about your journey with Reading Across Canada. You also have the added challenge of being out of the country and a more limited access to Can Lit. Nunavut is tricky because the population is small and therefore the population of writers is even smaller. Tanya Tagaq and Sheila Watt-Cloutier are two that I have read from there. For PEI, there is the PEI book award which has Nonfiction, Fiction, Poetry and Children's books. That might help introduce you to more authors besides LM Montgomery. Thanks again for taking on the challenge and I look forward to seeing what else you read this year. 😊💙
Thanks so much for commenting Jolene! I have The Right to be Cold on my TBR actually! Although I thought she was from the northern territory of Quebec! I see she lived in Nuvanut for a long time too! Will definitely look up the PEI book award too! Thanks for the local tips :)
I'm going to do this challenge for next year and aim to read an author from each province and territory. I'm Japanese Canadian from (London) Ontario and currently live in Halifax. Since I'm travelling in Ontario to visit family at the moment, I don't have my TBR with me, but I am ALSO struggling to find a writer from Nunavut. Also, I LOVED "Fayne" and almost everything Ann-Marie MacDonald has written :) I have a few recommendations. They're just a few that I've read and enjoyed: - I'm Afraid of Men (nonfiction) by Vivek Shraya - A Grandmother Begins the Story by Michelle Porter - The Way the Crow Flies, Ann-Marie MacDonald - My Conversations with Canadians by Lee Maracle - 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act by Bob Joseph - Noopiming by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson Happy reading!
Thanks so much for commenting and adding some recommendations! Always fab to get more! You know I never read anything by Vivek Shraya, need to remedy that! I always love reading Ann-Marie MacDonald yes! I actually found an audio of Fayne since I filmed this video, so keen to add it to my tbr now! 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act is such a good one for the Canadian Non-Fiction prompt! Might see if I can squeeze it in for Non-Fiction November! Oh I enjoy reading Leanne Betasamosake Simpson! I have Rehearsals for Living (with Robyn Maynard) on my tbr!
I second the recommendation for Vivek Shraya-anything by her! A multi-talented queer South Asian Canadian from Alberta. I was also going to suggest Ann-Marie MacDonald, but a different title, her debut: Fall on Your Knees. Camila, that would satisfy the prompts for marginalized voices, over 500 pages, and New Brunswick… but I am glad to hear you now have access to a copy of Fayne.
Reverse all lies ever told and be a food servant for the homeless it's very important for us. Beautiful u r
What's your favourite book by a Canadian author? Do you have any suggestions for me from New Brunswick or PEI? Thank you!
I recommend Candy Palmater’s posthumous memoir Running Down a Dream. She was a queer Indigenous celebrity from NB and her memoir is amazing! For a chiac author from NB, what about France Daigle? I don’t have any PEI suggestions, but the province has book awards every year so you might find something browsing through those.

Hi!!
October vibes and great books.
We love October vibes!
I’m keen to read James and Orbital sometime.
They're both so good!
Ah...you've convinced me to read Orbital now.....🥰
haha great! It's short at least so it's a relaxing read I found!
I like to write down quotes before I return library books too. 😊
After college I think I rejected that a lot haha but it's starting to happen more and more and realising it's making me more mindful in my reading!
The safe keep is one I am toying reading, so I would love to hear your thoughts on it
I just got it from the library so will give my thoughts soon on it hopefully!
I have been in the same mood. Having a hard time creating or watching ❤❤
Aw! It's good to hear that it happens to all of us!
I adore this Shortlist. I’ve read James, The Safe Keep, Held, and Orbital (enjoyed them all). I still need to read Creation Lake and Stone Yard Devotional. I do plan to read the rest of the Long List (I’ve also read Headshot, and it’s by far my least favorite-so repetitive).
I ended up giving up on Headshot, just wasn't in the mind for it, but currently reading Creation Lake! And have The Safekeep lined up next! Not getting them fast enough, but slowly getting there!
@@hasteyebooks I was finally able to get my hands on Stone Yard Devotional. That's my last book. I think Creation Lake is going to be my least favorite on the shortlist. I hope you get along with it better than I did.
I am about a third into The Safekeep and it’s good so far. Stoneyard Devotional is a good book but wacky in places. So lovely to see your video appear❤Happy reading Camila 😊
Aw so happy to hear, I just got The Safekeep from the library so excited now!
Headshot is a test of perseverance! I loved Held. It's the first book I read and I just happened to be in the right headspace for it. I managed to find a used copy of Fugitive Pieces and I'm looking forward to reading it. And I thought James was interesting. I just have to find a copy of Orbital to read, and I own Creation Lake but haven't read it yet, though it'll be my next read after Wandering Stars. The other 2 books on the shortlist are my lowest rated books I've read in years 😂 but there's not many people who feel the same way. But that's ok!
haha turns out I'm not very persistent then 😂 I'm still waiting on Held from the library! Did you end up reading Creation Lake? I'm just about 100 pages in and I need help to know if it gets better ...
@@hasteyebooks 😅 I think this year's longlist seemed promising but as I've read through them, I haven't actually enjoyed or considered many worthy of high ratings. I did read Creation Lake... it ends rather abruptly, so you might feel like it was all for nothing 😬 Sorry! It had elements in it that I wish Enlightenment by Sarah Perry had. But it was hard to get attached to any of the characters in Creation Lake and some stuff seemed a bit convenient. It has made me want to read The Mars Room by Rachel Kushner though 😅
They shortlisted all five books I have read! (And one that I was planning on skipping). I'm very happy with four of them, but didn't get on with Held at all, and I'm a bit meh that I'll have to read Creation Lake now. 😂 I recommend Stone Yard Devotional. I think you'd like that. And it seems universally appreciated. Held is a marmite book, you'll either commune with it on a spiritual level or you'll think it's a pompous, disjointed snooze fest. The Safekeep is either a book where you are in suspense wondering what is going on, and then you are blown away by the reveal in part 3 (most British readers), or you see what's going on from the first chapter but you're still enjoying the story (most readers from continental Europe). The ending is divisive, but personally I liked it.
Oooh I love when that happens! I was pleased that out of the 2 I read it wasn't 'wasted' on the longlist haha especially since I loved them too! Still can't get my hands on Stone Yard Devotional so might give up on that one!
I love the re-framing <3 I appreciate the tag and you (and everyone who knew Alice) sharing love for her. And it's never too late for a book tag! Celebrating all your bookish experiences w/ you
Eve was great, I can understand and agree the criticism for pageboy, although I enjoyed a bit more than you I think. And I hated an American marriage. I was just waiting for Celeste to stand up for herself, but she was always so passive with her back and forth… not my thing at all
I totally appreciate your criticism of American Marriage - I had issues with the relationships too, although I thought it was such an interesting window into the burden and problems of mass incarceration on people's lives.
My best books of August The Alternatives by Caoilinn Hughes The Coast Road by Alan Murrin Wild Houses by Colin Barrett My Friends by Hisham Matar Amy & Isabelle by Elizabeth Strout Did you know that Commander Gore was areal person from a failed Antartica expedition?
I did know about Commander Gore cause I ended up googling the characters out of interest 😅 not sure if it makes it better or worst for me! Ooh which was your favourite book?
Ok now I‘m itching to add Eve to my TBR! You mentioned it a few times now and it sounds right up my alley! I heard mixed things about Ministry of Time, I‘m glad it worked for you😊
Eve was so good! Big recommend still! It keeps coming up in my mind and I keep mentioning it to people haha! Ministry of Time is a wild ride. It was great on audio too!
I just finished Headshot and it wasn't my favorite writing style. I am excited to read a couple more from the Booker Prize, though.
Good to know! I ended up giving up and returning it to the library - I just couldn't be bothered, which isn't a good sign 😆
I hope you have a better time with birnam wood this time, I enjoyed it but it's not my usual style, I like have characters to root for and this felt more plot based. James is brilliant.
I did manage to finish it in a day! (I was painting for 7 hours) I have a lot of feelings about it haha but generally didn't love it!
Thanks, Camila🌷I finished Orbital yesterday and can warmly recommend it for a quiet, meditative read full of beautiful descriptions of the earth seen from outer space. I found some of the reflections on humankind from the point of view of the six astronauts illuminating.
Yess! That's the same experience I had, just very meditative and quiet!
Code dependent is so much more than what I expected. I have low key decided to read the longlist of the womens prize for non fiction because all I have read from that list has been excellent, even the ones I was not so sure I was interested
Yes I agree! I've read 9 I think, with 3-4 being of no interest, so still got a few more if I can ever find them! It was such a good experience! I found I read more Non-Fiction this year generally!
Liatened to Orbital and it was excellent on audio. Very thoughtful read--in that it will get you thinking. Liked Birham Wood again on audio but it does take awhile to get going. Thunderclap is a favorite. Loved it in print. Happy Reading
Oooh I loved the print book for Orbital and now I feel like I want to experience the audio too!
Really enjoyed James and am so glad I read it. ❤
Yes so glad to hear Deea! I was so pleasantly surprised, but I shouldn't have been as it's Everett!
I read the secret history last month and thought it was excellent. I was relieved it lived up to expectations!
haha yeah when a book is so hyped sometimes it disappoints! Have you read The Goldfinch too?
I'm hoping to read The Secret History this year too. But it definitely won't be this month 😅 Between the Booker, my ridiculous amount of library books, and my ongoing chunksters for Big Book Summer, I'm swamped. Code Dependent is so good! One of my top non-fiction reads, for sure. Thunderclap was good too, and very pretty, 😄 but not as riveting as Code Dependent. Birnam Wood didn't work for me at all, but I'm definitely in the minority there. James is really good though.
I highly recommended The Coast Road by Alan Murrin I stayed up to 3am to finish it as I couldn’t put it down.
That's an incredibly good review to stay up so late to read a book!
I have really enjoyed watching all of these Booker reaction videos all across BookTube. Thank you for jumping in! I'm starting with "James"and "The Safekeep" and see what comes after that.
Thanks so much! I love doing blind reactions to prizes, so fun to share in the experience with everyone :) How did you find James?
lovely reaction camila! i've read 6 of these so far - james and the safekeep are by far my favourites, and i was a bit let down by my friends and this strange eventful history. held and orbital were pretty good! i'm intrigued by headshot, enlightenment, and wandering stars, but i hope to get round to all thirteen of them sooner or later. can't wait to see what you think of the ones on your tbr if you do end up reading them!
Your comment is so interesting after seeing the shortlist, because you seem to be in sync with the judges choices haha! I've finally picked up The Safekeep from the library so need to get reading!
It’s quite a safe list but equally maybe that will give us a stronger reading experience. We shall seeeee!! Good to see your reaction Camila ❤
It's funny because when books we expect aren't on the list we're all shocked but when they are, we're like 'where are all the books I've never heard of?' hahah I love it!
I really liked James! It’s the bones of Huckleberry but so fresh and funny and poignant. Completely unexpected take on slavery and one that is needed!
Sorry I'm just answering now! But love your comment as always Deea! I totally agree, I feel the commentary was so modern too even though it didn't feel out of place in the historic fiction setting!
Let me know if you read Wild houses
I didn't ended up reading it no!
I am definitely going to try Headshot, Orbital, and maybe Enlightenment
What did you think of them? I loved Orbital!
@@hasteyebooks I’m sorry to say that I didn’t like it. I ended up reading James, Held, Enlightenment, Wild Houses, Wandering Stars, Orbital, and The Safekeep. Of those my top three would be: 1. James 2. The Safekeeping 3. Held
@@BookishTexan Oh shame! But James is my top too! I just picked up The Safekeep from the library so have high hopes for it!
I'm hoping to read a few off the list... eventually. 😊💙
The 'eventually' here is so relatable! haha
I also loved Girl, Woman, Other, Soldier Sailor and North & South. I'm really looking forward to reading the ministry of time. Great questions and lovely tribute to our friend Alice 💔
Thanks Sarah!
I really like this version of the tag! I've saved it to do next year!
Thanks so much!!
Loved the celebratory vibe, plus some great books mentioned that I have added to my TBR. Going to check out the BookTubers you mentioned. 😊💙
Thank you so much Jolene!
The Burnout was my first Kinsella too! It had me crying and laughing both 💕❤🩹
So good to hear I wasn't too late to the party haha
