I’ve just started Soldier, Sailor and agree wholeheartedly. I love it and am reading it very, very slowly. It’s so intense and poetic, just beautiful.

So glad you liked soldier sailor. I loved it as well, and I can confirm that all those negative feelings at the beginning are not necessarily post party depression, is just the shitty reality sometimes...

Yeah I could see that, but it feels like wanting to leave your baby in the park is maybe a bit of depression? Like you said, the shitty reality and I'm guessing hormones, must make everything so tough! I really felt like I went on that journey with the character!

I‘m itching to put Soldier Sailor & Nightbloom already on my TBR! I will keep watching reviews to finalize my picks but these seem to get a lot of love!

It's great when a book lives up to the hype, isn't it. I really wasn't keen on Soldier Sailor no matter what people said, but yes it ended up being a five star read for me too. I hope I'll end up liking A Trace of Sun more than I anticipate too 😂 As for Nightbloom, the first part was so-so, but the second narrative was so good. Really worth the wait. I also really enjoyed how they remembered things completely differently.

I'm so happy to hear you shared that feeling too! That's why I like the prize actually - it makes me read books I'd otherwise not even glance at!

I'm so glad you talked about these 3! I am 25% in to Nightbloom and I really like it. I can't understand why there have been quite a few dnf's.
I bought a trace of sun and soldier sailor, so glad to hear your thoughts on those.
I'm very nearly finished The Maiden, which will be the 3rd one I've completed.

I'm the same, I'm very surprised people DNFd Nightbloom. The beginning wasn't as slow as some of the other books on the list!

I'm so pleased that this year there's no one book that everyone is already convinced will win, it makes things more interesting (although I also didn't like Demon Copperhead, so....)
As it stands, I'd put Nightbloom, Brotherless Night (both currently reading), Ordinary Human Failings, Soldier Sailor, Enter Ghost, and River East River West on the list - but there are still several I haven't read so I think those last two could easily get replaced.
The others I've read are A Trace of Sun, Restless Dolly Maunder, and Western Lane. Dolly was the only one so far I really didn't think was good at all.

I totally agree, people are loving books all across the longlist and shortlist and it's nice to spread the love! To me Dolly felt like 'meh' like I just didn't see why it was special?

Soldier Sailor isn't released in the US until June, but I am so looking forward to it!

It was really interesting how much more you enjoyed these three than the first three. You’ve made me more interested in Nightbloom. Really not sure about A Trace of Sun. The cover is really not doing it any favours at all. Soldier Sailor is my current favourite too, what an intense book. I just DNFed The Blue Beautiful World yesterday, now I’m wondering if I should try it on audio. 😊📚

Agree about the A Trace of Sun cover. It really doesn't appeal to me. It will probably be the last one I read. 😛 The Blue Beautiful World makes a lot more sense if you read the first two books. The first one, The Best of All Possible Worlds, is a slow burn (the slowest of slow burns) romance while visiting many different cultures. If that's your thing at all. I liked that one the best of all three books in the series.

Did you end up reading A Trace of Sun, Alice? I feel quite bad for it because the cover did it NO favour!

@@TheLeniverse I know the cover gave it a vibe that was completely off! The book was alright, but the marketing was wrong which means my expectations were all over the place!
