Ye Old Entertainment

Добавлен 9 июл 2006
The spirit of this channel is to help you decide whether that videogame that you have been thumbing for ages is indeed the right game for you or not. Expect reviews, playthroughs, commentary, recommendations and, when I'm feeling like it, I'll probably be sharing some of the stuff that I've learned from videogames. Hopefully I'll get the chance to share with you some ideas about films and books. (Hopefully you'll lend my a hand with that with some recommendations). This channel is called ye old entertainment for a reason though... don't expect reviews and comments of games and movies fresh out the oven. (I'll tell you why eventually). Cheers and enjoy
2024 RPGS that didn't fo it for me
Best games of 2024? ha! not likely! Here are four 2024 RPGs that didn't quite do it for me. Some of them are double A RPGs some of them are indie RPGs (and I have a soft spot or indie games) but I'm sorry... these titles just didn't do it for me. Beyond Galaxy land has been labeled best indie game of 2024 or best indie RPG of 2024... I just don't see why. Everyone's losing their mind over Drova (comparing it to Gothing and everything) I also just don't see it... Here are four RPGs that didn't do it for me in the year 2024.

Now that Outward 2 is coming out, I thought it would be a good time to honor my long overdue promise and make a video about this insane masterpiece of an RPG by Nine Dots studios that ticks all the right boxes for the right player. Why people like WolfheartFPS, ESO and several other channels consider this videogame to be one of the crown jewels? hopefully you'll get your answer with this video....
The Thaumaturge review. An RPG that's not for everyone, but it might just be for you.
Просмотров 3,8 тыс.2 месяца назад
The Thaumaturge is an RPGish game with turn based combat mecanics, developed by Fool's Theory and 11 bit studios, that's barking at the same tree as The Witcher games, those Bioware games from the early 2010s (Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc) or Red Dead Redemption. But the setting and story are unique and enticing. It may not be for everyone, but if it is for you, you're probably going to be like...

Darkest Dungeon 2 review/recommendation. Better than its predecessor? Are the mixed reviews fair?

Darkest Dungeon was a an RPG dungeon crawler with extra features, a dark fantasy vibe and superb writing. Darkest Dungeon 2 is a roguelite and has more in common with card battlers like Slay the Spire or Monster Train. @YeOldEntertainment yep, I was definitely planning on that one as well ...I'm rich with cRPGs to look forward to 😁
17:01 one of three?? My dear man there is much more than 3 potential strongholds in the game! Castle for fighter, Forest Lodge for Ranger, Theatre for Bard, Planar Sphere for Mage, Quarters in Helm's Temple for Cleric, Quarters in Radiant Order for Paladin, Druid's Grove for Druid and Thieves Guild for Thief.
Yes, I've been told several dozen time in the comment section of this video and on Discord and I've apologized several dozen times over the course of this three years for this.
I’ve heard that a goblin straight-up calls you a racist in SoD. That is one of the most unintentionally hilarious interactions I’ve heard of in a CRPG. If that is the quality of the wokeness on display in SoD, I might pick this up after all! With the tide of wokeness beginning to recede these days, I hope to laugh at SoD’s forced, dated, mid-2010’s SJW activist writing. It may have been written with a straight face, but I hope that in retrospect it has become unintentionally satirical!
The problem is that there are several other reasons why the writing is bad. But yeh... as this nonsense is progressively becoming a thing of the past like one of those ridiculous hairstyles from the 80's or 90's that we point and laugh at today, the writing will probably also become less and less irritating in time. The gameplay is really good though, in my book, so it might be worth checking out still.
One of the most thorough, nuanced reviews I've ever seen. Excellent work.
@@sunofsotep8265 And thank you for watching!
For me I agree for your first time I also would recommend going "vanilla" but after that I can recommend mods. As I use the hud mod so I can have more check on buffs/debuffs, and caravan transport mod which fits in the world. I would loved music mods, as Outward is lacking greatly in music variety. Dont get me wrong the music is amazing, just need more of it ^^. I have done everything beside the main quest with the Kingdom which I am doing atm on and off. When I am not playing Pillars of eternity 1 for prep for Avowed ^^. My favorite faction was Holy Mission, then Sorobor academy and lastly the Blue Chamber. I am intrested to see the main event from the preview of the Kingdom. Btw Hex/rune mage is best build every no one can change my mind :D:D Tho I did enjoy my first build which was a chakram / Mage build.
this convinced me to get it thanks, was on offer like 6quid ps store
Enjoy!
Anyone else notice that the playable characters in this video never wear helmets or masks that would hide their faces? 🎭 I guess "Ye Old" is one of those rare breeds who prefer IMMERSION over some random stat bonuses.
I heard not many people didn't like this game saying bad story I didn't know what they meant cause I haven't played it yet but I'm stilling going to play and think of the story just the same way they think of past movies and games it's form a time when people had a total different view but at least in a time period where I can see we're moving Away from that and back to the "problematic past" the small Minority has been screaming about past few years
Except this game was made in the year 2016. It was not made in the late nineties and early 2000s as the original Baldur's Gate games. I don't think it's comparable to an old movie. Also the problems that people have with this game is not that is "problematic" because it's themes and values are outdated, quite the contrary, it's been made for "modern audiences" and leaning heavily into identity themes and "deconstruction of stereotypes".
@YeOldEntertainment Yeah they been making movie and games for this "Modern Audience" but they never show up. And I was agreeing it's dumb to do so but I played the first one when was young just sucks I was at the end of when computer die and I wasn't in a good financial situation to get new one so I'm going back and beating all the games I didn't finish or replay the ones I loved
Throne of Bhaal was a power fantasy - you have embraced your godly origins. The pocket dimension is something I actually liked way more than a camp - it's something fitting to a demi-god. As to why the woman was helping the "good" Bhaalspawn (by good it just means they are not deranged killers) - she gathered them in one place to "protect" them, while in reality she did it so it's easier for a lot of Bhaalspawn to die at the same time, without her dirtying her hands - she becomes stronger the more of them that die. And I remember this from 20 years ago :)
Just bought the Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - Obsidian Edition for $15.00 so checking out all your videos on the game to get a bit of a hands on perspective before starting everything up, great job!
Thanks!
I absolutly HATE Disco Ellissium. The game is a book. A movie you watch. You cannot actually do anything outside its restricted structure. That annoying companion cannot be klled. You cannot tell him to shut up. You arent allowed to not be politically correct. You cannot do anything.
Its a solid 1/10 overhyped piece of garbage. It gets the 1 because of the graphics. Maybe a 2 if you have the audio version that reads all the text for you.
ironically Discoellysium, is more restrictive and forces you to be PC than the majority of modern flops people reject today.
To me, my personal 90s top 10 list from the perspective of a person who lived in the 90s is here. It might not be on the same list as yours or someone else's, but here's mine. Baldur's Gate II Shadows of Amn, Oddworld :Exodus, Starcraft, Chrash Bandicoot 3, Final Fantasy VII, Heroes of Might and magic 3, Chrono Trigger, Metal Gear solid, Street Fighter 2.. Ironically many theese are inventors of entire gender of games because they were the innovators during those times.
Haven't played any of these games myself but you seem to have an educated opinion on them. Hard to choose well where to spend our money these days. Personally i'm also too burned out on pixel art. All the merit to the artists but when i see a potentially good title being made with pixel art i stay on the fence, even more if the title is in isometric view and the characters don't have more that 2-axis animations. It's been overdone imo. A few titles that grabbed my attention recently that might fall in "rpg" category and with nice 3D aesthetics are Weird West, Alaloth, Rum & Gun, Unexplored 2, Stonefly and Tunguska: The Visitation.
Well, we're going to be talking about Alaloth on the next video, so there is that.
One recommendation is to keep the name of the game on the screen while talking about it. Just a recommendation. Thank you
The graphics are bit too sucky for me. More dated than Fallout 1.
diablo and souls like ruined rpgs, also roguelike, instead of making good rpgs with good story and choices and roleplaying, every small dev who cant make actual rpgs just made diablo clones and now souls clones and the tiny indies make rogue likes, so you have to dig through a a sea of crap to find an actual rpg. Its funny because i smelled it from a mile away and someone debated me in the comments telling me that its not woke and i am seeing thing and trash a small indie studio. Also in dragon age the veilguard there is a line "carefull these enemies go hard" MEDIEVAL FANTASY? NOPE WE ARE DOING STARBUCKS. I dont even like medieval fantasy but that modernity isnt gonna get me on board. Speaking of which i dont know about outward, i am not into medieval fatnasy and from what i saw the game is light on story and focus on preparing for a fight dying and losing your stuff so i guessed it is similar to souls like, so you telling me it isnt? Its more like gothic and morrowind?
I strongly recommend you give Chrono Ark a try. It's by far the best roguelike deckbuilder I've ever played.
Do you have a video that recommends best games?
There several of those on the channel There is even a playlist of Ye Old Gamer Recommends ruclips.net/p/PLZ0feZLPyhIAROWz3uP0taHcYYi1Cmx1b&si=1d3YYkxten_RKEB4 but if you are talking about a list similar to this one (RPGs that DID do it for me in 2024)... well, it's coming.
@@YeOldEntertainment Thank you, I appreciate it.
I pray you find another Underrail. I'm looking for it too.
Well Underrail 2 is underway ti seems
@@YeOldEntertainment meanwhile the atom rpg devs switched back to medieval fantasy.
Why aren't you comparing Drova to Gothic instead of Outward? If you did you'd see the design similarities when it comes to quests, progression and exploration. And I agree about the woke stuff, no argument there.
Its funny because i smelled it from a mile away and someone debated me in the comments telling me that its not woke and i am seeing thing and trash a small indie studio.

@@YeOldEntertainment Same, Inquisition was complete ass.
@@longjohnbaldry7360 inqusition was a masterpiece compared to strap on age queer c ck, we talking about super linear action game with no exploration and barely any choices, people say dragon age 2 was better, i repeat DRAGON AGE 2 WAS BETTER THAN VEILGUARD.
Funny, I thought the sci-fi prison one was a pure tactical RPG. Seems like I was half-right if there is no real narrative besides "make your stay there more tolerable"
There is a little bit, but the story is definitely not the game's Turn Stone
Disagree with Drova, fun game that is worth playing.
100%! The story isn't incredible, but the world was fun to explore. I found it very intriguing. Additionally, the combat was more than solid for me. Plenty of options and the magic was fun to use. I'll never understand why people drop a game just because you can play a bearded woman... its an RPG. Play a bearded woman if you want lol. Why does that matter?
Always saving me time and money, thanks!
Any time
But now are characters can pull barves if they offend someone in the game. Maybe 2024 wasn’t the most innovative year for rpg’s .
There were a few good ones, just not the one in which that happens.
I hate zoomers so much
Aww I loved beyond galaxyland, but I love jrpgs
That's why you liked it, hehe. It's the best one on the list, though.
the graveyardk keeper devs made a persona like game called bloomtown, you might like it.
Thanks for Drova warning. I was intrested, now I identify as non-buy-nary
I see what you did there XD.
Loser🤓
Same here!
Its funny because i smelled it from a mile away and someone debated me in the comments telling me that its not woke and i am seeing thing and trash a small indie studio. The dev has some crazy takes on gamer gate so yeah.
Totally dodged a bullet there indeed and thank you! I was mildly interested but the combat looked somewhat uninteresting and repetitive, and now it's obvious I wouldn't enjoy the story/rpg bits. (also Stoneshard is prettier ^^… but will probably never be a complete game…)
Have you tried New Arc Line which seems to be heavily inspired by arcanum?
Yup. Got a code and played it last Card Battler Saturday on Discord. Might make a video when I finish it. Thematically it draws very heavy inspiration from Arcanum, the gameplay is significantly different though.
@@YeOldEntertainment is it dark or does it play it safe?
Awe! they were all meeeeeeeh XD
Seeing Arnold unexpectedly in your videos always cracks me up! Also quite a bummer video. All these games seem to have some neat ideas, but kinda fall flat overall. Thanks for your insights!
Yeah. They all looked promising
There's a lot of people who would also tell you Drova is absolutely top tier. You can check out reviews or play yourself and come to your own conclusions. It's 2D Gothic and if that's not your thing, fine, but let's not act like a game that is being overwhelmingly praised by it's target audience and seen as a step in the right direction as an homage and spiritual successor is 'falling short'. If overwhelmingly positive reviews and selling beyond expectations is falling short, what does their success look like? The game is superb in multiple facets of it's design, but you might not like it. There are fantastic games that I don't enjoy, but my lack of appreciation doesn't change the fact that they are very well made titles. I can't think of a better ARPG that plays like Drova currently. It's nothing like Diablo or Grim Dawn or POE or Obsidian CRPGs it's really unique among it's peers. Honestly it sounds like he just got filtered by it, there's a reason it's being nominated for "Best Game You Suck At" for steam awards. You'd be hard pressed to find others sharing the opinion that it fell short, considering they are apparently meeting or exceeding all their internal goals. Maybe the game just isn't for everyone?
I wondered why the first upload ended after seven mins. Now I can watch the whole thing.
I had problems with the video.
Just started playing end of 2024.
Surprised it’s the best game you’ve reviewed. I like Origins but I find it very generic and formulaic at the same time. For a game deemed as a spiritual successor to BG2, I’d say it doesn’t do anything better than BG2 aside from graphics and the “cinematography” BioWare started introducing in their games with Kotor. To me it’s the Skyrim of the the CRPGs, meaning it’s a bit of an overrated game (compared to its inspirations/predecessors) that came at the perfect time and found the perfect audience.
"These kids discover the Beatles, talk them up at God Status, and act like they're unique". Same goes for the inverse. Baldur's Gate and IcewindDale are Perfect games. Remasters on the larian engine would be perfect. The stories are not better, theyre as good as BG3.
Neverknowsbest has become a woke and old broken down droning pile of crap.
pot, meet kettle.
The biggest time sink of a game I have ever played. It’s worthless. Animation based combat which people call “realistic” when it’s not. Walking simulator where you spend long stretches of time doing nothing. NO RESPECCING of breakthrough points. Constantly having to look up the wiki to look up weaknesses on bosses so you don’t die 10 times and have to run back to sleep wasting more time. It’s busy work. I pushed myself to get through this game and I got full squire plus maelstrom blade and got the crimson avatar set plus both liches armor sets and star child claymore just to name a few. This game is not for anyone who has a family and multiple responsibilities irl.
that long ahh intro was freaking beautiful. loved it! ❤😂
This is the most boring and overhyped game I've ever played I played it for 3 hours and got refunded I don't know how anybody was able to play all the way through this game the combat is so boring and so slow I don't care about the story if everything else in between is pain
Jean-Francois Recene is one of the most brilliant musical artists ever. Every single one of his works in Outward and its subsequent DLCs is memorable and nostalgic. He’s like a more upbeat, modernized Jeremy Soule
Yes, this OST is criminally underrated.
Thanks so much for featuring Deepest Chamber! We appreciate the honest feedback and are glad you enjoyed the game. 🧙♂
