    Roguebook is sadly so underrated. It's a great game. Yes, it's heart is transplanted from Slay the Spire but there is enough innovation there to keep it interesting. It also looks gorgeous. Too bad almost no one is speaking about the game.

      I like it, think the art is great. I'm not keen on the parts in-between combat but thought combats were really good with great enemies. I found there was just too few opportunities to sculpt your deck. I love Pirate Outlaws and Slay The Spire because of it's frequent opportunities to add and remove cards and really sculpt those synergies

    • @sathrielsatanson

      @@Nintendaddy I can agree that deck building is even more limited than in StS with removing cards being almost impossible.

    After Beneath Oresa and Slay the spire, Griftlands took me by surprise for how well card game and narrative intertwine, like a card game can do that with a story?!

    • @YeOldEntertainment
      @YeOldEntertainment  9 дней назад +4

      Exactly! You don't expect multiple stories (well written stories, at that), player agency and multiple endings per story in a card game!

  • @Klausebou

    Thanks for the great overview, helped a lot with choosing my next card battler - just bought beneath Oresa.
    I would really LOVE to hear your take on Wildfrost, which at the moment is my favorite in the genre. It was a bit unfairly maligned when it first released, but it has so many great and unique aspects.

    • @YeOldEntertainment
      @YeOldEntertainment  10 дней назад

      Interesting! Thanks for he suggestion!

    • @DanBottiglieri
      @DanBottiglieri 9 дней назад +1

      Seconding Wildfrost, it was stupidly hard and unfair when it first came out but the updates they have made since release completely redeems it for me, and it's one of my favourite deck builders (although to be honest I did actually sink about 10 hours even before they released any updates, so I agree with your assessment about unfairly maligned). It's also really fresh with the mechanics, which give it a very distinct feel that I think a lot of the StS inspired games sometimes lack. Out of all the games I own that have cards in it, Wildfrost is my second most played below Slay the Spire, although in the same ballpark as Cobalt Core and Monster Train.
      It doesn't technically have cards so I understand why you didn't include it, but to me the gameplay of Dicey Dungeons is a lot more like a lot of the games you reviewed here than games like Voice of Cards or Inscryption, and also a fantastic game.

    • @davestopa999
      @davestopa999 3 дня назад

      @@DanBottiglieri I agree with your comment and the original one. The game was way too hard for me at first, so much that I stopped playing for several months. I came back when I saw it was available for Android and have been hooked ever since. I love the way they brought new gameplay elements and how everything is so polished and well thought out. Even the little details, like how the name of the leader changes every run, the sounds and music, the animation, the different synergies, and the strategic positioning of the cards on the battlefield, are impressive. It has now made me completely forget about my Balatro addiction. Out of all the deck-building roguelite games I’ve played, Monster Train is the best to me. No other game spikes my endorphin rush like a godly run in that game, but Wildfrost is a close second best for sure.

    I would love to bring some attention to Thea series. I like the original (Thea: the Awakening), but a lot of people prefer the sequel. It is a mix of mild 4X strategy and cardplay, with a ton of Slavish lore, and moreover it is one of the few card games that works as a slow burn, long, strategy style campaign map rather than the super limited uber popular FTL style encounter map. The cardplay is not the strongest part, but the game more than makes up for it with its unique blend of genres and breathtaking amount of lore and encounter variety you will have in the game.

    If your looking at it as just a deck builder and comparing it to the roguelike then yeah 100% meh
    But its not designed as a roguelike...
    Its designed with the story in mind (Which i super enjoyed) Getting to see some heroes that dont normally get spotlight like Blade or Magik
    While comboing it with the familiar faces and new takes on existing heroes.
    The combat is ridiculously fun. the deck building feels unique as the cards get upgraded and can combo with eachother.
    My only complaint is that it doesnt have much replayability because the story is a focal part of the game. you dont want to have to redo the grindy hub world stuff every time.
    The first time through though i truly enjoyed the game. and the core gameplay is very solid.
    Highly reccommend especially if your a marvel fan

      B) Is unbalanced
      C) It has nothing other than combat.
      I immediately knew that the game was not for these people (or these people weren't the right audience for the game, however you want to put it) but it was probably going to be for me. Then I played the game and it turned out I was totally right, because the game's a blast to play.

    My problem with Slay the Spire and similar games is that I cannot build the decks I want to. After I am done experimenting, I like playing around with different concepts. But more than 90% of the time I do not manage to make the deck I want in StS. That is why I like Tainted Grail, because there I can actually build the decks I want to play with, instead of pray for random chance to give me the handful of cards I actually need.

    • @YeOldEntertainment
      @YeOldEntertainment  10 дней назад +2

      The thing is that you are trying to build the deck you want. That's not the way to go in these games. For example if you play the Ironclad... there are three or four overarching strategies and you have to go for the one that you get the cards for. These games are about dynamically building your strategy with what you're given. But there are several games on this list that give you full control over your deck:
      Vault of the Void (this one is the best for this)
      Black Book
      Marvel Midnight Suns (not exactly a Card battler but in the neighborhood)
      Ash of Gods -The Way (not exactly a Card battler but in the neighborhood)
      Maybe give those a shot, especially Vault of the Void.

      you gotta embrace the randomness with these games. use what the game gives you

    • @SeriousWays
      @SeriousWays 5 дней назад

      @@sginrummy88 I will stress on saying "When I am done experimenting" which means that when I am done trying all different things in the game, I want to play some specific deck and try out different tactics with it, but the game does not facilitate it in absolutely any way. As an example, I completed Slay the Spire with all of the classes with a few different strategies on each. Then I wanted to play a deck with poisons. I need about 5 cards to make the deck work. I had three different runs, each lasting over an hour and I did not get the 5 goddamn cards even once. I wasted 3 hours playing a game where I had 0 control over getting 5 specific cards, so I can try out a deck I like, after I was done playing with "whatever the game throws at me". This is why I do not like such systems. They waste a ton of time, without absolutely any chance to actually try out fun things I have found work for me.
