I believe Matt Barton interviewed the developers for this game and they kept stressing "WE CAN NOT WRITE A STORY TO SAVE OUR LIVES." It was actually pretty funny.
I'd give a penny to prove you a liar. Why is it that every little feckless dweeb feels the need to boast about something like a video game? If you played 12-15 hours, you did not finish the game. Speed running is for chumps, and doesn't count. If you think speed running an in-depth RPG is cool, you just don't understand RPGs. You'd have come across a lot better if you'd said 50-60 hours.
This game is the perfect example of the question "Why do you play DnD?" If you play it for the story, branching narratives, roleplay? Honestly, this game might not be for you. Do you play it for the tabletop fights and the math rocks going clickity clack? This might be Game of the Year for you. It replicated the 5e ruleset to the computer better than any other game I've played. It has a wonderful editor with a fairly large community making more maps. Theres tons of monsters to slay and plenty of people on the multiplayer to slay them with. As a grognard that loves the combat and dice rolls, Solasta ate up so much more of my time than BG3 early access did. In fact, I think BG3 is another great example of this. If you're looking for faithful and balanced 5e combat, well, its Larian. You're definitely not getting that. But if you're just looking for a good story, I bet it'll be your Game of the Year.
I agree very much with this opinion! I consider BG3 the "Matt Mercer D&D Experience": artistic, story focused - but totally different from your neighbourhood tabletop experience. I'm playing D&D tabletop rpgs for ~30 years and Solasta was closest to that: not too deep stories (because the DM is not a writer, but a guy who is trying to provide a game for friends besides working for a living and running a family), not to deep characters (because the players are not actors), but great fun anyways with cheesy one-liners stolen from different media and interesting combat encounters. For this, Solasta will always have a special place in my heart. :)
I think they did a pretty good job for a such a small company (less than 20 people). They did a better job in some aspects of the game even than BG3, such as a much better crafting system and a better resouce management (especialy at early levels), the short rest is better design than BG3 too and you have the sensation of time passing and it was more truesfull to an actual campaing in DND. I agree with almost everything that it is said in the video but i feel that every issue the game have it can be explain it for a lack of ressources (both human and economic). I didn´t use the dungeon maker at all but for what ia read fron the community its great. I hope they do a secuel with more money and manpower, especially in writing.
I was never able to finish the main quest in Solasta. Because the custom content and the lost valley dlc were so much more fun. The system does give dialogue to the character that is most suited for it. It does make you think there are hundreds of dialogue options, when in reality there are maybe 5 assigned each to a handful of personalities. The game needs more voice options. The gameplay is indeed so much fun, I prefer it over baldur gate 3 and path of richous.
Campaign-wise the core game is the best as a whole. Lost Valley has more challenging combat and better dungeons, but it's buggy, choice and consequence is atrociously implemented and it has less character interaction (plus the game doesn't care that you've already been to a place when your party talks to an NPC who requires you to something somewhere).
What I noticed in this DLC is that almost every combat had flying enemies or far away ranged enemies. I played with friends and our Paladin felt he couldn't do anything most of the time.
I had a dwarf fighter and I didn't get that impression. There's plenty of stuff to tank. The flying mofos have to go down first, though, that's for sure.
I got this game on a Steam sale because I want to create quests for my friends and I to run. The editor is surprisingly easy enough, I was able to being making maps and simple quest triggers after a couple of hours of experimenting and Googling. WIth a little more experience, I think I could whip up simple maps and quests pretty quickly. But, the props and scenery options are pretty limited. I can't really make a village with a tavern, only a big dungeon with rooms for merchants and tables. So I'm limited to indoor castle or dungeon settings, which is not terrible. But I would like to have some wilderness and towns to provide some experience of travel and an outside world. If they released a resource DLC for Dungeon Maker, I would buy it. The Dungeon Maker is the main reason I bought it, although the campaign has been fun so far.
The right DLC can totally resurrect a game. Playing MOTB per your recommendation. It is a triumph. Especially compared to the rest of NWN content. Ill finally watch your review of it after i finish it. A couple other DLCs i think worth mentioning F03 point lookout RDR: undead nightmare Dragon age Inquisition FNV: all of em are good
Hey buddy. 3 August Baldur's Gate 3. Are you ready? I know almost nothing about it and it is great. I am gonna play the game entirely myself without solutions. I think I want to create a Rogue. Yeah good idea.
Tactical Adventures has said they're going for a new IP. They've put out the last official Solasta DLC, and that makes sense, since for me a lot of the charm was the fact it is completely voice acted. Yes, I like Carron's voice the best. Wish he'd had a bigger part. But getting consistent voices over 3 DLCs is pretty good. Any more would probably get prohibitively expensive for a product that's finished in Tactical Adventures' catalog. I am interested to see what their next project will be. The survey didn't give many clues. All in all, I'm glad I played a lot of Solasta, as it sets me up for BG3 and the DnD ruleset.
Ah yes Solasta, a fun D&D 5e combat simulator (which it excels at), but just can't seem to create a compelling story. I had fun with the main campaign and the Palace of Ice, but I really wish the developers could hire some writers who can craft a compelling narrative. I honesty don't even recall what the story in Palace of Ice was about, something about elections? As far as a tactical combat simulator, it's a lot of fun. For a compelling narrative with choice and consequences, yeah....you're not going to find it here. I've had fun with Solasta, but I think I've had my fill for a while, especially with the BG3 launch.
I played the ones that came with this expansion they were o.k. but very combat heavy. I started creating my own, but there weren't enough features for me to create what I wanted.
Some people are. But this game does not have ongoing gameplay. Though it does have multiplayer, it focuses mostly on the single player canpaign mode. And it has been around for three years already. So normally, it's not as popular as it was two years ago. But it's fun fun fun.
I was shocked that in Palace of Ice there was absolutely no use for charisma, intelligence and wisdom skills. It's like the developers just gave up. Only the original Crown of the Magister campaign is worth it - the personality traits, how the initial tutorial is designed, the fact that you had background quests.
@@YeOldEntertainment On the other hand, there is a lot of custom campaigns already. It seems that Solasta is taking Neverwinter's place. And that's a good thing!
The graphics and clunky (read: not bound to keys I like) camera controls really kept me from enjoying it. Tried multiplayer but kept DCing too. Glad people enjoyed it though.
oh man leave solasta alone lol. one of the best bangs for the buck in rpg gaming. its not a triple a title, let them come out with this stuff and we'll see if/when solasta 2, what it can do
Not a AAA title, for sure. I could look past the shortcomings. The game was a slog. That killed it at about 35-40 hours for me. And I just passed 700 hours in CP2077, so I have no problem commiting to a game, heh.
Push? Or rather give you an option to use them? That's idiotic. It's like not playing half the cRPGs with romances, becauses they give you some options for gay romances. If an OPTION to roleplay in some way makes you unable to play the game, then the problem is you
Imagine being this insecure about a game, giving you the option to choose pronouns. When you can ignore it and continue on like it's not even a thing. Guess you're so incapable of ignoring the option you had to let everyone know how dumb you are. Thanks, dude.
@@adammusia9527 Agreed and well said. Not a fan of all the craziness today, but if a game gives you the choice, I have ZERO problem with it. Boys, bears, bugs, bitches... whatever.
I know what you're talking about but it is literally one choice at the end of character creation and doesn't change any of the game at all (registers like a -1 on the woke meter). Pathfinder on the other hand...
I believe Matt Barton interviewed the developers for this game and they kept stressing "WE CAN NOT WRITE A STORY TO SAVE OUR LIVES." It was actually pretty funny.
That's what I call Balls to the wall honesty.
The story wasn’t terrible
Atrocious character models?!
Pffft
You fucking kids and your graphics obsession
they hired a writer
I enjoyed it (A fun 12-15 hours) but even more importantly it gave the community high end content for use in their module and campaign makers.

Solasta may as well be seen as a construction set with new assets released periodically

That is true, but the fact that I have so much choice makes lost valley my favorite.

At least they now their limitations. Which makes Solasta oft a pleasant reminder of SSI D&D romps of yore: no bullshit, just a simple setup, here's your D&D, off you roll. Not gonna win any awards. But not gonna piss you off either.
Quite a few more popular games meanwhile are trying to top the LOTR trilogy with the budget of an episode of Xena Warrior Princess. The net result? 100-200 campaigns full of filler, endless paste© trash combat, walls of unedited text and ideas that must have looked good on paper at best. But due to a lack of time and money, are finalized as they came.
Not calling any names. Those who've played their CRPGs know what those games are either way. ;)

Thanks for the review, guess I’ll skip that one!
is solasta combat as fun as bg3 combat?
Bruh that intro lmao
I just wish the game would be combat only without the dialogues altogether which made me grit my teeth with cringe.
