Outward is top tier game... for the right player

- Now that Outward 2 is coming out, I thought it would be a good time to honor my long overdue promise and make a video about this insane masterpiece of an RPG by Nine Dots studios that ticks all the right boxes for the right player. Why people like WolfheartFPS, ESO and several other channels consider this videogame to be one of the crown jewels? hopefully you'll get your answer with this video.
This time I'm not making a review... because a standard review video would will fall dreadfully short of selling you the majesty of this game... so I thought it would be better to simply share my most recent story with it. Because, like Leliana from Dragon Age Origins would say... "I love stories far too much to keep them to myself".
Also, know that despite the fact that Outward The Definitive Edition is best known for being a fantastic online co-op game, (couch co-op that is) I will only talk about my latest single player experience with this game. Enjoy!
You rekindled in me that desire to try Outward again, after falling in love at first then bash my controller some hours later after a big setback. This game is truly a diamond in the rough
I'm glad to hear that!
@@YeOldEntertainment Such a good channel!
Not sure if it was intentional or not, but I found it very appropriate that in a review of outward where one of the prominent themes is that having to work and put effort into something makes the journey more meaningful, you made a review where the first 10 minutes don't mention the game at all
It absolutely was! At first I was thinking of making a RUclips version where the intro would be seriously shortened and an only-for-discord users version (this one) that I was going to upload to Odysee... but then it struck me... man... it would be inconsistent with the game's theme...
I've greatly enjoyed Outward ever since learning of it from Sheenshots's challenge run videos, so it feels very appropriate that I'm listening to this video while actively developing mods for the game (after playing plenty of it vanilla, of course). :3
Nice! Hopefully they aren't hand-holdy mods!
Yes please keep going with your story it was very exciting to see how you played out the game
A personal story with the game huh? I see that as an invitation to share mine, wanted or not lol.
Me and my partner at the time loved the fable games growing up. Specifically 1 & 2, we never played 3, so we played it together. We loved the game and both of us bonded over our world's coming together and wanted another game to get lost in. Now Outward was on my radar pre release, but life got in the way and I didn't actually try it till Jan 2021. I knew this was something special and realised it had splitscreen co-op.
I begged her to try it, said it felt like Dark Souls and Fable had a baby, she was reluctant because she didn't like hard games, she preferred cosy games over the idea of slamming yourself into a brick wall multiple times per boss in the Souls series. We sat and watched a RUclipsr do a first impressions video where he made his partner play the game with him (Can't remember name and can't seem to find the video as I wanted to link it). This enticed her to want to try it and the rest is history.
We fell in love with the game, playing it for 8 hours straight some days, we would go on nature walks and make references to the game, like "Go grab some Gaberries, I need some Jam". We would make Jam (Jelly) on toast to eat while we played. Our favourite food to have while playing was assorted meats, cheese and olives accompanied with some wine as our brains thought "It's stuff they would eat back then" and it was amazing.
My favourite memory is walking along the seaside in Whitby (Fishing village in England) and listening to Outward's music from her phone, she started to play it without me realising, looking into her eyes that day and knowing she was mine was one of the best feelings I've ever felt.
I'll always hold Outward as one of my most favourite games of all time, not just because the game is amazing, but the memories that we made along the way.
Nice! Outward tends to make things like these happen.
Outward is easily one of the best games ever made. Remarkably underrated.
Yes, it is!
It's so good because its a full rpg adventure like Skyrim but WITH COOP! And we played on hardcore of course, it made everything a big deal
What’s hilarious is that I literally just got done watching a pitch meeting and then rolled over into this video lol
Dude, I absolutely LOVE Outward.
That speaks very extremely highly of you as a player! So cheers!
@@YeOldEntertainment It took me MONTHS to finally give it shot. Then, with my very first character, I got "killed" and woke up as a slave in Vandeval. I escaped down a hole, and ended up on the beach. I found my bag, but not the gear that I'd been captured with. I assumed that I'd lost that gear permanently, and so I quit that character, and (after I'd cooled down for a day or two), created a new character 😂
Jean-Francois Recene is one of the most brilliant musical artists ever. Every single one of his works in Outward and its subsequent DLCs is memorable and nostalgic. He’s like a more upbeat, modernized Jeremy Soule
Yes, this OST is criminally underrated.

Outward is a definition of an underrated hidden gem.
I've played the heck out of it and I'm looking forward to Outward 2. I've heard it was in the works.
Edit: forgot to add - Outward has one of the best magic systems in RPGs, ever, and I've played a bunch of them, trust me.
It requires sacrifice, it is very involved, sometimes expensive, but very powerful and varied.
Yes this is a game with and ooooold soul. And Outward 2 is looking ridiculously awesome.
@YeOldEntertainment I hope they won't screw it up. But I'm cautiously optimistic.
@@arcanefeline Screenshot (whose channel was created for and because of Outward) played an early demo and he loved it. He was "relieved" that the tenants of the game are all present in Outward 2. The devs used unreal though, not Unity... so the game does look a little bit different, I would say better.
@YeOldEntertainment grated, it's not hard to look better than Outward, especially in the character department, lol.
Anyway, I'm glad to hear that!
At first when I played outward it was frustrating and I died/got captured plenty. After learning how to actually play the game, I can go through the whole campaign without dying once now
Yes! If you don't mind I'm going to share this post on discord for the naysayers who don't want to try it out! XD
Alex is running to the store Naruto style in dread of hearing one phrase:
"You have been waylaid by enemies and must defend yourself"
Awesome review with peak side content as always!
It was exactly like that.
thnx bro, you reminded me of so many great composer, like dark tranquillity and dream theater, thnx a lot.... by the way great review, outward it's one of my classic
There's Dark Tranquillity, Dream Theater, Devin Townsend and lots of other composers whose initials are DT XD. Thanks for the comment!
@@YeOldEntertainment 😂
You made me buy this this morning
I feel the pressure! I hope you enjoy it!
i tried the game when it launched for consoles and rage quited almos instantly, then they gifted the next gen upgrade with the ultimate version and tried the game again, this time i studied the game and took my time learning the weapons and skills, plus all the new Quality of life aded to game make it one of my favorite games of all time, is like a D&D campaing were you really fell the hero, your choises and time matter and have consecuences and there are so many build that you can replay the game and dont get tired
I'm glad you gave it a second chance! It truly is a masterpiece.
I see now why this video took you so long! Excellent work, especially the writing! Will 100% play this game, or at least see if I'm worthy! Also, I'm curious to see who rescued Alexandra and why!
It was a random person. She returned the favor not long after.
I really enjoy that losing is part of the gameplay. I play it hardcore mod and the stress I get knowing I have few chance in "losing" that my save can be deleted make the game and all its mecanics feel just so great. It's trully an important/step game for rpg's
100%!
I can totally relate to your friend who`s buying the limited editions.
Hell yes! New Ye Old! Just cracked a beer aswell.... kick back and listen brother!
Nice. Enjoy!
It’s beautiful. Well worth the wait!
Although I would have enjoyed to hear some more of your insights on the game and its mechanics. Nonetheless my I liked it a lot, and I think this might be the best video on Outward on the platform!
@@macrou It was long overdue, but I am a man of my word.
@ Yes, I never doubted that! Glad the day has finally come! I shared it in the Outward discord and on Reddit btw.
@@macrou Wow. Thanks my man!
I've been a gamer for close to four decades, and Outward is definitely one of my favorite games of all time.
I eagerly watched its development and have been playing this lovely game (and its two excellent DLCs) since the initial release on PC.
My playtime so far, according to Steam, is 1756 hours; which I suppose is enough of an endorsement of the game haha.
Thanks for the video!
And thank you for watching.
Crazy amount of time lol I've put 400 hours about the same as Elden Ring! 1700 hours, you have done everything 50 times at least. I know I've done it like 10 times including my permadeaths 😅
Smelling the thick Starcraft manual pages and feeling the gamebox cover relief depicting the marine with goggles on the way home with the train 🥲
Glorious! For me it was reading Kings Quest VI's manual, which was written in the form of a journal from a chronicler... TOP moment for me in the history of gaming
Do continue.
I've always been interested in Outward. But I've also been hesitant because I am a (save)scum of the earth and this game does not allow it. Punishment for fucking up seems pretty harsh in Outward too.
But I also love cheese solution to problems in games and Outward seem to encourage it. Also, the locations and world seem very interesting. As well as the build variety. And the music is very atmosoheric.
I hope I have it in me to embark on this adventure one day.
Do not miss out on this great game! I under stand you're a Save Scummings, but I also think you'd appreciate not being able to do that in this particular title.
Having consequences to your actions is what makes this game so good. You just have to be mentally prepared for setbacks and know that’s part of the game.
I'm an aggressive save scummer as well, and I absolutely loved Outward. The big thing is that when the game takes the ability to save scum out of your hand, it can really help shift the mentality while playing. For me, at least, a lot of the pressure to save scum comes from the feeling of missing out. When that is forcibly removed from you, you just learn to adapt and keep going.
@@cidfacetious3722 guess i will have to change my mentality
@@Sadinar I hope I can adopt to this!
I decided. In the start of my next playthrough I'll kill the hyenas with only push kick skill. Because dagger slash would be too op against them and using any of the normal weapons available for you on the beach is just too plain to be a challenge.
Is a cool video, but Outward has great story and lore imo, and we do have access to the source for the details of what our grandma did as soon as we leave our house after the shipwreck.
But ye love the general vibe of your approach to making the video ❤
For me I agree for your first time I also would recommend going "vanilla" but after that I can recommend mods.
As I use the hud mod so I can have more check on buffs/debuffs, and caravan transport mod which fits in the world. I would loved music mods, as Outward is lacking greatly in music variety. Dont get me wrong the music is amazing, just need more of it ^^. I have done everything beside the main quest with the Kingdom which I am doing atm on and off.
When I am not playing Pillars of eternity 1 for prep for Avowed ^^.
My favorite faction was Holy Mission, then Sorobor academy and lastly the Blue Chamber. I am intrested to see the main event from the preview of the Kingdom. Btw Hex/rune mage is best build every no one can change my mind :D:D Tho I did enjoy my first build which was a chakram / Mage build.
yeah this might be my jam.
it's in my steam library? ok then.
no idea where you came from, but i will finally notice you!
I hope you do!
Ihsahn, good choice brother.
That was my friend. I like Ihsan... but not enough to buy the vinyl collection of all his solo material. XD
I prefer Dismember / Dark Tranquillity / Iron Maiden over Ihsahn ;-)
@@galotta8475 Well Iron Maiden is actually his favorite band ever.
I bought the one copy for my Steam Deck, I hope I will have time to play it.
I hope so too!

I've had it for like 3 years and not played once. Time to make some changes
Do you have the Definitive Edition?
Yeah, pretty easy to get caught in the grind in this game and continue to be a happy little murder hobo just living and exploring the world.
You can live the thug life if you want to here.
I cannot wait for the sequel!
The only thing you mentioned that might make me unworthy of this game is the saving. I don't mind not being able to save scum, nor to save before I try something risky, but I tend to get interrupted when gaming, and I would like to have the freedom to save, deal with any real life interruptions and pick up the game where I left off. I find most any game annoying if it doesn't allow for me to leave when I need to.
Well you can pause the game and you can exit and come back to take from where you left!
ur making excuses bro if u click exit game and join again youll be in the same spot.... u literally do want to save scum
@@daggwr No, at best I was unsure if there was a save a quit option which is what I was mostly asking about. If there is a way to save and come back to where I was, like any hard core roguelike game has, I am fine with that.
It's the games that only let you save when you sleep, or find a save point that I can't really get behind. Baldurs gate honor mode does not allow save scumming, but I can save and exit at any time.
@@colmortimer1066 u dont need to save and come back just exit and continue. the entire appeal of the game is every action matters bc u cant reset
@@daggwr What is the difference between saving and coming back, and exiting and continue?
I am pretty sure we are talking about the same thing. Yet you are being angered because you are not understanding we are talking about the same thing.
For anyone that wants to get into this game but is turned off by the timed quests *this also annoyed me and was almost a deal breaker until i found out the advice i am about to give you all*
** Very Minor Spoiler Shield **
There are 2 times in the game where you are given a grace period where you can explore and enjoy the game with as far as i am aware no threat of time related shenanigans.
Looking to the Future is the first quest that is not timed ... this happens after you fix your blood price which is the first quest in the game, by not completing this quest you can explore *as far as i am aware* till your hearts content, get a good feel for the game, some kind of economy and a bare bones build that will let you finish the next few timed quests.
If this still turns you off, the wiki has a list of EVERY quest in the game, in order with all the timed related quests so you can tick them off.
That said the time periods are not the worst, i believe 50 to 100 in game days so don't panic Tootoo much.
I can’t believe my eyes!!
@@macrou I was looking forward to seeing you in the comments for this one!
@ Well, that was obviously a given, been waiting for this one for what felt like an eternity! :D
It's weird that I've never heard of this game.
You truly are missing out on a jewel of a game.
I want to see how Alexandra (re)ends up. Damn.
She's going to meet the Soroboreans now.
Since the DE came out, im still playing it today on Xbox Series X.. never left lol
Yes, this one of those games that "one does not simply" leave.
CLIFFHANGER
Good song by Shadow Gallery. Part II's even better.
What do you mean a ""for the right player"? Outward is top tier, period.
I loved that you have to enjoy the game *deliberately* because defeats are a massive set back, you need to pay attention to the landmarks (and thus appreciate the landscape more), and the distance needed to either do quests, or just unlock your class means you have to plan things.
There's some survival mechanics like food, exhaustion and sleep, and I loved it, but I wish it had a little more of that so I can play the game forever and just relax innawoods.
Speaking of exhaustion, I should play the game someday again and run an insomnia mage that grows more powerful the less sleep I get.
I also think it's top tier... but you'd be surprised how much people don't get it...
Absolutely not. The game is a major slog to play through. Walking takes forever and it’s a wiki game where you need to look up everything before you fight unless you want to die multiple times before you get it right. It is only for the right player because it has the time sink quality of an mmo without the mmo part. You will spend a lot of time doing nothing. A lot of the play time will be spent looking up how magic and spells work because the game is so obtuse about it. Even builds require some planning because new players could use their breakthrough points and not know what they are buying. There is no respeccing of your skills.
Funny , I was just about to start this Game
Goal: I wanted to play X-com: Terror from the deep
Obstacle: I had no money
Solution: Walk across town with 3 boxes of floppy disks to my mate's home.
Does anyone else keephearing "sea or so" whenever he says Cierzo? No? Just me?
I had to sneak play every game. Cause "grown men don't play vidia-games". The world has changed some since then. :)
The thrill of sneaking!
Dang what happened to your old intro and music? 😢
@@Discovery2024-rn8kn it will go down as part of the channel's history.
Alexandra 🤣
Yes? 🤣
The biggest time sink of a game I have ever played. It’s worthless. Animation based combat which people call “realistic” when it’s not. Walking simulator where you spend long stretches of time doing nothing. NO RESPECCING of breakthrough points. Constantly having to look up the wiki to look up weaknesses on bosses so you don’t die 10 times and have to run back to sleep wasting more time. It’s busy work. I pushed myself to get through this game and I got full squire plus maelstrom blade and got the crimson avatar set plus both liches armor sets and star child claymore just to name a few. This game is not for anyone who has a family and multiple responsibilities irl.
i cant get pass through character creation in this game, my char is look like a slimey crusty old person, basicaly me.
that was the most overdone intro ive ever seen in my life, get to the point (which is a good one)
ANOTHER girl boss RPG?? PASS.
This game was a made before the proliferation of girl bosses. Also, you can create your character so you can be a guy. And guy is the default profile. And even if you play a chick... you're never girl-bossing. This is definitely not another girl boss rpg.
