I had this game sitting on my wishlist for YEARS, until last year when I bought it on sale. I had only played for a few hours before I convinced one of my best friends to join me. Oh, the adventures we have had. Tired, sore, and battered from our journeys on the road, we stumbled into a a large fortress, hoping to get out of the cold. When the time came, we earned enough trust for the guards to allow us beyond our initial prison area, and accept more duties around their fort. From there, we ambushed one of our captors and divided her armor between us, as we broke into the armory. Grabbing our supplies, the battle for our freedom began. My friend, the stalwart mace and shield, held back the masses as I, the wizard, sent plumes of fire over his shoulder, driving our adversaries back as we fought our way up and out of the castle. All was going well until we ran into who could only be described as our captor's leader. Best part about that quest is that there are multiple ways to escape. I'm honestly glad I chose the Holy Mission as my faction for the first playthrough. Music plays a big part in gaining those nostalgic memories for me, and the green color palette and whimsical woodwinds of the soundtrack permanently planted this game into my head when I played it three years ago.
Nah bro I had this exact thought when I first saw this game so I immediately bought it and honestly with 100 hrs I can say it’s pretty fun but doesn’t have the same charm as skyrims world and npcs definitely recommend though
I remember playing this a ton with an old friend of mine and it is hands down one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Truly an adventure, miss that guy.
This game is such a hidden gem. I remember I bought the game on launch and played it with my brother. It is one of the VERY few RPG games that actually has split-screen. Sure, the combat is sometimes unforgiving, but every battle won, every adventure started, and every treasure found makes it so worth it, as if you surpassed a struggle and feel the relief in you. I love this game so much, I made 2 sperate characters. My first was a Runic War Mage, my Second character was a Gunslinging Merc. And my Current character...is a Skeleton! Yes, there is a way to play as a skeleton! And it's awesome...and dangerous lol.
also one of the amazing things is you can build your character any dumb way you like and it's still completely viable. anything works (while still everything being a challenge).
I remember picking up Outward for some reason a year or two ago, binged like 70 hours straight, and for my attention span, thats incredible, I knew absolutely nothing about the game, so everything really did feel like a fresh adventure, I remember being absolutely astonished when I got knocked out and forced to work as a slave In the mines, then cobbling together a complicated scheme to escape my way to freedom, finding my chest full of stuff was such a relief, had no clue If It was just gone. The game Is full of stuff like that, I bet It's been updated to hell and back since I played too, It's absolutely worth your time, go Into It blind and look up some stuff If you want some direction, all I knew was that there was a way to learn runes, and where I should go to get the runes, and that journey was a whole LoTR's trilogy's worth of fun.
My wife and I stumbled upon this game a couple of years ago and ended up addicted for a few weeks. That first playthrough, especially co-op, is one of my favorite gaming experiences I've ever had. One of those I wish we could forget and experience again.
It's rare that I come into the conversation of fiction that has a genuinely good god or deity, but after going through the Monsoon faction quests I can wholeheartedly say that Elatt has been the best. He makes it clear that his abilities are limited and that while he has power, he is not all powerful. Nor is he all knowing, he makes mistakes but also owns up to them. He's really just a guy who became a god, shouldering that burden without losing the characteristics that make him human. It's so damn cool to see a trope be subverted like that in such an interesting and ultimately wholesome way. If nothing else, Outward can own that. But there's so much else to love, and I can only write so much in one comment. Thank you for such an entertaining video!
This game is so special. There’s nothing quite like it. The combat is actually so good once it clicks, your slow but I always felt like that is the point. You’re a nobody, not the chosen one.
Outward is my personal GOTY for 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 despite Elden Ring's release. I might have more hours played in other games, but i remember none as fondly. Come to think of it, i haven't touched it in 2023 yet... here we go again! If anyone's about to give this game a shot because of this (awesome!) review: i would highly recommend _not_ looking anything up beforehand. Try to keep away from the extensive wiki and don't look for build advice, just use the resources the game itself gives you and i *promise* you'll have a very memorable and satisfying experience 👍
this game is a total gem and super slept on, and on top of the fun loop, the fun skills, the survival aspect, unforgiving and rewarding fights, great quests and the awesome gear and customization, the music and tracks in this game are absolute BANGERS! running through some of the zones when the music is blaring and hitting hard makes this game feel so alive
One of my favourite games that I still play. I love the legacy system. The music and atmosphere of the game is probably the best of any game I've played. Don't pay attention to the steam reviews.
I am incredibly thankful for the tutorial level you can play from the main menu. I’d recommend it for new players especially but also for returning ones if they haven’t tried it. It isn’t too tedious and at least for me the combat was always way to complex to just jump back into it. The game is rough but has a lot of great stuff.
After putting in nearly 300 hours into this game I can say it is a hidden gem with some flaws. When I first started playing I had zero clue what I was doing, just like Morrowind. It definitely scratches an itch you didn't know you needed. You can tell this game was a passion project esp when you find out it was a team of I believe 4 people who made this (please correct me if I'm wrong). The big issues about the game are, it can be very slow especially after you're 3rd/4th playthrough, and once you learn the gameplay loop you can get endgame gear before even dealing with each factions questline. I still will always recommend this to friends as this game was extremely enjoyable during the first 150 hours. It was also fun to stream hardcore playthroughs and having others watch as your character get deleted😂. Still hope they look at making a second one in the future cause I will preorder it the day it becomes available.
I’ve played outward for a long time and I’m so glad I found this video. I’m happy that there are more people talking about this near masterpiece and I hope this video and more will show others why they should also invest their time into it.
I'm addicted to making builds in Outward and I think you did a great job here getting across what exactly makes this admittedly flawed game so special.
I played this game for 12 hours. I died repeatedly to the mantis shrimp on the beach, the mercenaries in the camp near Cierzo, and almost everything else that wandered up to me and wanted to fight. After getting teleported all around the map and having no idea where I was or what I was doing (and without my gear, since most of it got stolen when I died), I gave up. Defeats didn't make me stronger, they just made me pissed off and frustrated at this game enough that I rage quit. Now it sits in my Steam library, unplayed since May 2022. That was my journey with Outward. The end.
Somebody actually covered this game, and gets it. Thank god. This is one of the few games that recaptured the feeling of adventure I used to get as a kid playing RPGs.
My favorite game. I can chill out in the world, think up challenging tasks for myself, be weak, be powerful, seek out an item I've never had before or just follow a questline. Oh yeah, and the music is the best I've ever heard in a game.
Allright, you made me finally buy Outward. Been eyeing it ever since it came out, but I didn't know a lot of the stuff you highlighted in this video like defeat scenarios and having to sacrifice stats to get mana. I hope this will fill the hole Skyrim left in my soul for a while xD
Great video. I found this game hard to get into at first but now I think it’s one of the most underrated games ever made. I loved it so much. The soundtrack was one of the best I’ve ever heard in a video game. I really hope there are plans for a 2nd game with with all the lessons learned of the first
It's rare a video sells me on the thing it's talking about and the channel as a whole, but you did it. Thanks for introducing me to outward, and I look forward to your next video!
This is one of my favorite RPGs because it treats you with respect, it treats you as a normal functioning being, not a superman with an all seeing eye that knows where everyone and everything is, or omnipotent that you don't need to eat drink and sleep. Instead it treats you as a human being who basic understanding on how to fight, when to eat, where to sleep, how to survive the changing weather, and where to look for things. Quest descriptions are descriptive enough to let you know where it is next to the closest landmark. After getting beaten by bandits once you should have the knowledge by now that you cannot win without cheating them, so go craft some traps, poison your swords, hit them with arrows to bait them, and have them killed by the doom you have prepared for them
Something i always noticed about the more "mainstream" rpgs (like Skyrim, Fallout, etc) is that they're all centered around you, the player. You're the chosen one, the one who changes the status quo or takes charge in a changing world. You're an outside element, for the lack of a better word. No amount of mods will change the fact that *someday* you'll have to travel to Helgen to start the main quest. Because these games simply weren't *meant* to be played as a nobody, so the content for that playstyle is rather small. A game like Outward, in the Fallout or Skyrim engines would be amazing.
Amazing video, thanks for bringing more light to that beautiful game You're now known to Outward community, we left a mark on your house, in a few days await chocolates in your left kitchen counter, the one you store your cereal in :D
I haven't played this since it came out. I should give it another go and see what has changed. I just loved that whole 'put a backpack on and your journey from A to B shall be epic'. Its just that doing that repeatedly back and forth got a bit stale. But I did love the enemy difficulty even with using guides to get a headstart.
Great video! You really captured what's great about Outward here (you even mentioned the legacy sysyem. Well done!). I have hundred of hours in this game, and I still love starting a new play through.
got outward back when it release..did the main quest and dropped it..got the definitive edition 4 months ago..and omg i was in for a treat..played split screen with my sister doing all that exploring making a solo toon that got me through everything this game has and i cant wait to go back in again..also super fun video! also i love the backpack i would never hide it xD..again great vid man really enjoyable to watch
This is one of those games I have installed 3 times and never started. Great video! I'm finally convinced, also there is no way that preset could look any MORE like Cotton Hill.
I understand your omission of The Three Brothers DLC. Really I do :) It's where all my builds go to die and samples..... dear god why did they think samples were a good idea.
I picked up the game the other day thinking its gonna just another indie survival game but found more than that. Love the game and the music infact I have it on my song playlist.
Also, if you feel like this game is basically hard-core breath of the wild... that's on purpose. There's even a food you can craft called "bread of the wild" because outward wears it's inspiration on it's sleeves XD
The part where you went over your spell blade build had me sold, then when you talked about the defeat scenarios I literally boot up steam and installed it. I remember in Elden Ring, at the bottom of Raya Lucaria you can get swallowed by one of the iron maidens and it sends you to the Volcanic Manor. That was such an amazing experience that immersed me so much into the world of Elden Ring, I can't wait to see what I find in Outward!
I am so happy the algorihm showed me this video. This seems like 100000% my jam, I am definitely buying it when I`m able. The exploration in the modern games is very surface-level, and I would love to have more games with distinct world designs (and smaller map) without the markers. Also the magic system looks very appealing to me. The video itself is great! I really like your narration, and the gags got were funny) Thank you for covering the game!
make sure you get the Definitive Edition. it not only includes the 2 dlcs, but works the mechanics introduced in those dlcs into the main game areas, and introduces special mini bosses in areas with special crafting materials, among other small changes. if on console, it’s only on ps5 and series x tho, not last gen, but it’s worth it if you have either console.
Really hoping these guys are able to make a sequel with a bit more money invested in it. It'd be great to have a more fleshed out character creation with some more agency to where you came from and what sort of relationships you have with other characters in the world you're struggling through.
A rpg with no q markers is a jewel. There are so few of them. Gothic 1 and Gothic 2, from Piranha Bytes, te developers behind Elex. Those game came out more than 20 years ago and the immersion is top notch. There is no loading screen, almost the hole map is unlocked from the beginning of the game, you can go everywhere you want. Animals hunt each other in the woods, each character has its own routine, to the point gards take turns to sleep, at night, even go to piss. People react when you draw your weapon, when you crouch to stealth and even when you stay on they're way when they walk. The other one is Elder scrolls 3 Morrowind. A true masterpiece, the only downside being the tons of loading screens. Dark souls game fall in this category too, but they are more action oriented games than rpg. And thus little surprise, Outward, the game that immersed me again after all this years. Except this games, that are primarily rpgs, there are two more I can think, but they fps, action adventures: Subnautica and Outer Wilds. So few games respect the player intelligence and what immersion really is about. Nice video 🥂
How you do not have millions of subscribers is beyond me, great video, made me want to play the game, subscribed and hoping you make some more videos soon !
I have this game so long on my wishlist, but never was sure about buying it because some of the complaints (mostly combat). But my god... this video makes me wanna play it... like right now. Plus, this is a damn fine video, and normally, I don't watch random creators bacause some can be really obnoxious and I'm happy with the few I watch.... but yeah, I'm glad I clicked on this video!
I'm enjoying this video more than I did the game. I'll admit I'm not really into survival and therefore I hated some mechanics. Instead of focusing exclusively on buffing players for eating, sleeping, drinking, etc, the game punishes you for going out for "too long" by reducing your health pool until you rest. The solution is camping, but only a few spots are safe from being ambushed. Another problem I found was world traversal. It's simply not fun, given how empty it is for the most part, combined with the afore mentioned mechanic that forces players into camping so they have their full health bar. The solution I found was to min max speed and stamina buffing skills and items, so I sped through the map as if I was the flash. I believe this could be fixed by increasing the time it takes for your health and other stats to start decaying. You might have fun playing the game, specially with a friend(s) (I think there's a mod to increase the cap). But when I Harken back to my own experience playing with a friend, the majority of it was me speeding through the map with my 50% + speed buff while he was disconnected, and then he connects into my game when I reach an Interest point.
@Mike araujo Mixing water with the gravel beatles you find in the game at a cooking station will make a tea that restores a huge chunk of your burnt health in early game. Stat burn is an annoyance in early game, but it becomes less obtrusive as you collect the various passive skills. One of the DLC breakthrough perks removes stat burn almost entirely, so you could try running that in your build if you ever plan on picking the game back up. Hope this helped, and thank you!
I was in that same situation. Oh this game looked good. Oh I could play with friends. Mixed Reviews? Meh. Then i just took the dive and man, was it the best few years of my life when gaming was at a lull. You learn the love the jankiness, dying because you got too thirsty, and just being mobbed to death my a shrimp. Its the ONLY game that I consistently follow on their discord, hoping to hear more from the company that made it
@@mikearaujo377 Interestingly enough i had the opposite effect. I was playing with a friend and we kept dying and picking each other up. We had like 20% health max the whole time and was struggling. They adventure became us living like savages trying to find enough mushrooms to bring our health back up while we made it back to town. The real adventure was the struggles we made along the way
i've been on the edge of buying this game since it came out. i have almost done it multiple times, but i think this vid finally pushed me over the line to get it.
I remember seeing our favorite African warlord's "review" of the game and thinking "huh, this looks neat". Then, I immediately forgot about the game, until this got randomly recommended to me. Yeah, I'll definitely give it a go. It looks great. Plus, great video, dude, looking forward to more from you.
I think I remember my old friend showing me this game when it was super early in its life, like there was a trailer with some dude in a grass field or whatever, and dude pretty much predicted it was gonna be lit.
You had me at no quest markers. I still remember how disappointed I was when I realized every quest showed you exactly where to go in Oblivion. And every open world game after that had them until BotW and Elden Ring.
Experience is actually experience. It's not just abstract numbers, you have to actually go out and learn and earn things, and you grow more powerful as you the player gain experience with the game.
I think you understated the sheer amount of survival games. You could take 1000 games on steam at complete random and there is a good chance that at least 60% of them are survival games. The amount of survival games on steam is only rivaled by the amount of NSFW games, this is assuming that you exclude the most broad categories that could apply to basically any game.
I fucking love this game. It's so unique and different. I love the class combo theory crafting. I love the hardcore mode. I've played SO much of this game. I even managed to finish w/ an HC character once! Add in the co-op, and this game is *chefs kiss*. It's sooooo underrated it's criminal. I think the studio is working on a new game... I would give anything for a sci-fi Outward style game.
Honestly I like the idea of outward. My main problem with it is that it has a lot of mechanics that kinda overwhelmed me at the start and just has me stunted

Nah bro I had this exact thought when I first saw this game so I immediately bought it and honestly with 100 hrs I can say it’s pretty fun but doesn’t have the same charm as skyrims world and npcs definitely recommend though
@@loganross1861 it could be a controller or something of the sort plugged in. Never happened to me in Skyrim but other games. Good luck
Loving this video. Thank you for making it!

Thanks for making one of the most special games out there. Been loving it since launch
I remember playing this a ton with an old friend of mine and it is hands down one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Truly an adventure, miss that guy.
Did he died?
@Konstantin Sorry for your lost
@@konstantin8901 yeah that's what happened here.
There's even a way to play as a troglodyte, but it locks you into a unique set of skills and weapons.
also one of the amazing things is you can build your character any dumb way you like and it's still completely viable. anything works (while still everything being a challenge).
One of those I wish we could forget and experience again.
this is such a high quality video I was shocked to see it wasn't from someone which atleast 100k subscribers
The best adventure game I ever played. It totally feels like an Old School D&D session when you are coop-ing.
Try to keep away from the extensive wiki and don't look for build advice, just use the resources the game itself gives you and i *promise* you'll have a very memorable and satisfying experience
👍
I am honestly surprised you don't have more audience, awesome editing and a very fun and entertaining video!
This is a great game but it's INSANELY hard and completely unforgiving. Deff worth playing at least once
this game is a total gem and super slept on, and on top of the fun loop, the fun skills, the survival aspect, unforgiving and rewarding fights, great quests and the awesome gear and customization, the music and tracks in this game are absolute BANGERS! running through some of the zones when the music is blaring and hitting hard makes this game feel so alive
You literally sold me on this game even though I had never heard of it 10 minutes ago. I'm off work today too!
One of the best games I've ever played and by far THE best soundtrack I've ever heard. Chersonese!
Thank god. This is one of the few games that recaptured the feeling of adventure I used to get as a kid playing RPGs.
this is maybe my favorite game of all time; thank you for the time and effort you put into this video
My favorite game. I can chill out in the world, think up challenging tasks for myself, be weak, be powerful, seek out an item I've never had before or just follow a questline. Oh yeah, and the music is the best I've ever heard in a game.
Hell yeah. So stoked people are still finding this game and falling in love. Outward got me through pandemic.
Just recently picked up the definitive edition on sale for $7.99 on PS5 and have been loving every moment of this game with my wife!
I've got 132 hours in Outward. Game was amazing.
The amount of times I've died and ended up as a slave in the mine though depressing.
Allright, you made me finally buy Outward. Been eyeing it ever since it came out, but I didn't know a lot of the stuff you highlighted in this video like defeat scenarios and having to sacrifice stats to get mana. I hope this will fill the hole Skyrim left in my soul for a while xD
Oh it will for a little bit, but Skyrim and it's mods always comes calling lol
Try Kingdoms of Amalur if you need more
Love your content 200+ hours of outward and I’m still learning love the vids keep it up👍👍
Great video.
I fucking love Outward. Thanks for bringing it to new eyes
No idea how this ended up in my recommendations but I'm glad it did
Wow! Thank you for this review. So good. Truly appreciated
Thanx for the video ! I looooove this game ! @8:45 : In fact, in Outward, that is actually the player who s leveling up, and not his/her character 😉
Great vid youve convinced me im gonna get my buddy to play this with me looks like alot of fun.
Amazing video, thanks for bringing more light to that beautiful game
You're now known to Outward community, we left a mark on your house, in a few days await chocolates in your left kitchen counter, the one you store your cereal in :D
This is the best review/discussion of this game I’ve seen, and I’ve seen them all. Now I finally will buy it
I haven't played this since it came out. I should give it another go and see what has changed.
I just loved that whole 'put a backpack on and your journey from A to B shall be epic'. Its just that doing that repeatedly back and forth got a bit stale. But I did love the enemy difficulty even with using guides to get a headstart.
One thing you forgot to mention. This game has seasons! If you fuck around in the beginning area for too long, it will become winter!
I love the aesthetic of a RUclipsr with a corded handheld mic. It puts me in the mood for hearing a comedian, and primes me to laugh.
Subscribed!
OMG that’s was the best explanation for outward I’ve ever heard. This should replace the official trailer.
Great video! You really captured what's great about Outward here (you even mentioned the legacy sysyem. Well done!). I have hundred of hours in this game, and I still love starting a new play through.
dude just stumbled on this gem of a review, bought this game ages ago and never played it. now im going to. also ++ humor, instant sub. you rock
got outward back when it release..did the main quest and dropped it..got the definitive edition 4 months ago..and omg i was in for a treat..played split screen with my sister doing all that exploring making a solo toon that got me through everything this game has and i cant wait to go back in again..also super fun video! also i love the backpack i would never hide it xD..again great vid man really enjoyable to watch
This is one of those games I have installed 3 times and never started. Great video! I'm finally convinced, also there is no way that preset could look any MORE like Cotton Hill.
Thanks for doing this hidden gem of a game justice with this incredible video. 10/10 good sir
I understand your omission of The Three Brothers DLC. Really I do :)
It's where all my builds go to die and
samples.....
dear god why did they think samples were a good idea.
This game is so goddamn good, and CO-OP IS GREAT.
This video essay was my introduction to your channel....sub earned almost immediately. Oh and im getting this game now!
I picked up the game the other day thinking its gonna just another indie survival game but found more than that. Love the game and the music infact I have it on my song playlist.
Also, if you feel like this game is basically hard-core breath of the wild... that's on purpose. There's even a food you can craft called "bread of the wild" because outward wears it's inspiration on it's sleeves XD
the video perfectly encapsulates my experience with outward. played it with my friend and it was arguably one of my favorite expierence in that genre.
You forgot to mention the phenomenal soundtrack!
The "OONGA BOOGAHS" has my rolling bro 😂
Bought this game, played through the tutorial, then got distracted and went about my life. I'll be revisiting because of this.
Just found your channel and I have to say, I can't wait to see you blow up! You will 100% go far over the next year! Mark my words ❤
It’s dogshit but alright
make sure you get the Definitive Edition. it not only includes the 2 dlcs, but works the mechanics introduced in those dlcs into the main game areas, and introduces special mini bosses in areas with special crafting materials, among other small changes.
if on console, it’s only on ps5 and series x tho, not last gen, but it’s worth it if you have either console.
One of the best music soundtracks I a game that I've played. It's a fun, immersive, and challenging game for anyone looking for a new rpg.
Really hoping these guys are able to make a sequel with a bit more money invested in it. It'd be great to have a more fleshed out character creation with some more agency to where you came from and what sort of relationships you have with other characters in the world you're struggling through.
You have earned another
subscriber my friend! Love this game and your style of presenting.
Subbed for the Bloomin Onion, stayed for the content
I describe Outward not as a walking simulator, but as an adventurer simulator, with all the good and bad things that come with simulators.
Been interested in this game for years and haven't checked it out yet. Nice vid, thanks!
Great video. Definitely one of my favorite RPGs I've played.
Hey Hey People.
the music in Outward is absolutely fantastic.
You got me really hyped for this game after completely cancelled it the first time I watched some reviews. Great video, definitly gonna play it!
*CO OP this game it's even more amazing.*
Also I love the music so much I still play to fall asleep
This game is on console and couch co-op BTW it's a very good multi-player game in my experience. I wasn't sure if he coverd this.
Outward is a very unique game. It's also a flawed one, never finished it because of that. Yet every once in a while, I'll come back. Because it's fun.
one the best games i have ever played hard but very rewarding and lots of different styles of play. love it.
I played around with this game when ti first came out, and loved it. But I barely scratched the surface of it. Im gonna do another playthrough
Holy shit this video is gold, I was just thinking about returning to Outward since my last playthrough before DE was released. Good shit man.
The depth of the combat makes up for the slight clunk it has, and you get used to that pretty fast anyway. The game is an absolute gem
The real adventure was the struggles we made along the way
Hey Tonesville, your comedic timing and editing is REALLY well done. So hello before you're at 100k+ subs.
i've been on the edge of buying this game since it came out. i have almost done it multiple times, but i think this vid finally pushed me over the line to get it.
You know, I don't subscribe to channels very often, but you're very entertaining to listen to, so I did. Keep it up.
I only just subscribed, I'm amazed I haven't found your channel before now. You've covered so many awesome games! Keep up the good work dude!
Hey hey people.
don't forget to wear your turban in the desert!
which is funny cause he kinda shat on it. XD
I forgot how good the music is in this game. We had so much fun in co-op with this game.
I think I remember my old friend showing me this game when it was super early in its life, like there was a trailer with some dude in a grass field or whatever, and dude pretty much predicted it was gonna be lit.
Keep growing your channel bro, surely you'll have a huge audience soon. Great video btw 💪
I saw this game on my PS store feed and thought about picking it up, I’ll definitely pick it up now. Thanks!!
Time to install Outward again.
It's always a good day, when Tonesville uploads a video!
DON'T FORGET THE MUSIC
Sci-fi, Stalker-like or even zombie apocalypse.
Whenever I play one of those, I wish they were more like Outward.
@@justafish597 HOW could I forget to mention the music. Thanks man, yes, I fucking love the music too. ;)
Honestly I like the idea of outward. My main problem with it is that it has a lot of mechanics that kinda overwhelmed me at the start and just has me stunted
