Gary Lewis & The Playboys Albums Episode 6: Golden Greats (1966)
The first exposure that many of us had to the music of Gary Lewis & The Playboys was through various greatest hits compilations and collections.
Today, we look at the 6th LP from the group and their first ever greatest hits package- Golden Greats! Released in fall of 1966 and boasting a gatefold with photos and a surprisingly heartfelt write-up by Snuff Garrett, this one proved to be the only Top Ten LP the group would ever have.
Featuring several popular A-sides, a few fun B-sides, and a brand new B-side that many fans probably didn't have yet, this release really set the stage and template for all future ones to come.
A unique alternate mix of "Sure Gonna Miss Her" is also present! (thanks...

I hope you have your record players ready! (And sorry in advance for trying to sing so much in this video...) Released in the spring of 1966, Gary Lewis & The Playboys' "Hits Again!" offers some great originals and quite a few fun covers too! It marked a downturn in popularity for the group, being the last Top 50 LP (of their studio albums) and also hosting their last top US Top 10 charting A-s...

In memory of Britt Allcroft (1943- 2024) As a tribute to the recently deceased creator of TV's "Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends," I thought today would be a good time to look back on some of the fun Thomas VHS releases from the 90s and 00s. For this video, let's take a deep dive into a few Thomas videotapes that never made the transition to DVD or beyond. While the exact reasoning for some of ...

Finally, we help Bob Hope survive the holidays in Damo...

The Weirdest Beach Boys Song on Each Album Pt 1 (Feat. The Beach Boys Basement with Steve Lewis)
Aw man, the last thing I was expecting here was an Exorcist reference. 🤣Mighty fine catch Betamax. I mainly recall loving 'The Outlaws is Coming'...I think because it also features pre-Batman Adam West and it's an old-west setting. Those are some great ingredients in my view. Excellent work as always man, hope you are having a nice weekend. All the best! 🤜🤛 Congrats on 500!
Thanks so much! Honestly, the creepy puppets would be right at home in The Exorcist! I love The Outlaws is Coming; it even has a joke about The Beatles in it, which is very surreal. Can't wait to talk more about it! Thanks for sticking around and leaving so many great comments! Looking forward to seeing more fun vids on your channel as well!
2 of My Favorite Curly Joe Ones are THREE STOOGES MEET HERCULES and SNOW WHITE AND THE THREE STOOGES From Fox Not Columbia.
Stooges Meet Hercules is a really fun one! I went to a Stooges Convention that was themed for the movie and it was a blast! Snow White and the 3 Stooges is another story...
Thanks For The Memories by Bob Hope
I have a total of 11 of the two-fers. Surfin Safarai/Surfin USA... to... Keeping The Summer ALive/The Beach Boys. I skipped Party/Stack o tracks ...and... concert/in london. It's plauusible that I will go back and get them at some point, but not very likely. Just not of interest. But the other 11 have (plus Pet Sounds and SMiLE Sessions) give mme what I consider a nice collection.
That's a very good collection! Party Uncovered and Unplugged is a good way to get the Party material should you want it and there are digital sets that are more comprehensive than the Concert CD. I'd say you definitely have the essentials!
Really enjoyed this, thank you! Very informative and interesting. Have you heard the song "Jill"? Will be interested to hear your thoughts on that at some point in your Gary Lewis reviews.
Jill is on the Listen album, which he hasn't gotten to yet.
"Jill- I can see the gleam in your eyes..." That's a good one too, and often overlooked. As TallPaul said in his reply, I'll talk about that song when I get to the Listen! LP Glad you enjoyed the review! More to come!
That'll be a fun one to discuss!
@@betamaxblocker Thank you!
@ Jill is very "Pet Sounds"-esque to me. I'll be curious to hear that review!
Thanks for returning to Gary Lewis! Rubber Ball is probably on the album as the Bobby Vee original was produced by Thomas "Snuff" Garrett. The edition you have is a mono copy, so it has the hit version with the horns. The stereo "album cut" without the horns was recorded first and appears on stereo copies of the Green Golden Greats album. The album version without the horns seems to appear on the Stereo copies of Hits Again according to this vinyl dub on You Tube. ruclips.net/video/r2YU3Wds6-I/видео.html
I prefer the version with the horns 😊
Thanks for your help and info, TallPaul! The Legendary Masters set linear notes say the remix differences exist only to cause confusion amongst fans and I am no exception. I'll be doing my Golden Greats video very soon so I'll be able to compare the version on there to this record. Thanks for the info about Rubber Ball too- Gary's version rocks pretty hard!
Me too
this video is excellent
Thanks so much!
Godbless you man!
My duophonic copy has all true stereo except for "Kiss Me Baby" and "You're So Good To Me" which are duophonic.
That's good to know! I had a hard time telling on mine. Further complicated by having two different duophonic pressings!
Hey Betamax. Great tribute to the late Britt Allcroft. As you noted, her contributions to kids around the world has left a lasting impact. I recall seeing Carlin still narrating when I was younger. I often caught Thomas on tv as a kid but would have loved to have had any of the VHS tapes you featured here. On a related note, we still have a giant bucket of Thomas trains, tracks, accessories....etc... which my youngest one still loves. All the best in the new year man!
God Bless Britt Allcroft.
Happy 2025 to you too, man! Picking up those VHS tapes as a kid made me a physical media collector for life LOL Glad to hear your youngest still enjoys Thomas; it was odd for me as I lost interest at about age 11 or 12 but started watching it again after I moved out on my own in my mid-20s and I actually think adults and even older kids can get quite a bit out of it. Such a great show (and not grating!) Hope you're doing well; looking forward to some new vids from you in 2025!
Great stuff man. Very interesting as always & entertaining. Gotta luv Edward G. Wasn't familiar with 'TheThin Man' plot, so good to know. Glad to know I'm not alone in finding 'The Big Sleep' 😕confusing, but it's so well acted, witty, and stylish to boot. " she tried to sit on my lap while I was standing up" funny! Nice recommendations, will check out part 1&2. Thanks man, hope you had good Christmas & New Year....scarf looks warm😄chill man😎
Agree 100% on The Big Sleep! "You do sell books here, don't you?" "What do those look like, grapefruit?" I love Edward G. Robinson too! I would love to hear your thoughts on the movies I talked about in Part 1 and 2. Hope 2025 is treating you well so far too! I love my scarf. It was hand crocheted just for me and is indeed very warm! Looking forward to more great content on your channel!
@@betamaxblocker Yes will do, hope to watch them shortly. Yes planning on heading out to charity stores to see what unwanted Christmas gifts have been dropped in. That is a funny line, and I love Bogarts' improv' art Book dealer routine😄 Take it easy man.
Gotta disagree about the definitive restorations. That blu ray release is incredible. Just the ability to use subtitles alone isn’t available anywhere else.
That's true- I didn't think of that! But the DVD set has so many films that aren't available elsewhere and everything is in order so I guess I see it as the definitive one even if others do not. Maybe more Blu-ray sets will come out with time.
@ I sure hope so! And yeah I own all the different sets possible lol. I just love that blu ray set.
The Dead did a similar thing with the Beach Boys / Dead show as Chicago did with the Beachago show. On Ladies and Gentlemen….The Grateful Dead they released highlights of the 4 Fillmore 1971 shows minus the special guests Duane Allman and Beach Boys
I would think a proper release with all bands/collaborations would sell quite well too. There must be lots of legal stuff to be worked out because I feel like otherwise we would have it by now.
I picked up a second hand Holland which had the original promo book. It is smaller than the reproduced version and made from different paper stock.
That's really cool! I wonder if a fan put that into the record sleeve for safe keeping... Shouldn't your username say Dr. Rudolph Yaeber?
Great video guys! Thanks for all the Fun, Fun, Fun content and have a happy new year!
Thanks for watching and we both hope 2025 treats you well!
Favorite Boxsets are Pet Sounds, Smile, Feel Flows and Sail On. Favorite comps are Ultimate Christmas, Endless Harmony, Party Uncovered, Becoming The Beach Boys and Sunshine Tommorrow. I love the Digital stuff as well. I grabbed it all from Big Beat to 1972. Speaking of Digital Downloads. This past Friday Brother Records/Capitol released some 1974 stuff officially on Deezer. Some of us were able to snag it before it was blocked. Typical upload for Copyright stuff. So yeah they are getting ready for something for sure.
I saw the 1974 stuff online but I don't really use Deezer so I didn't grab it. I did get the California Music EP on Amazon though as that is a cool Beach Boys- adjacent release. You mentioned some great sets as your favorites; I hope you enjoyed the video!
I found this one a little late, but I normally watch all your videos as they come out. One correction. 8 MM was a "film" format not tape as you kept referring to. The price has to be wrong, you could never get that much film processed for that price. The cost was one of the big reasons fans ditched it and went to tape. I have numerous 8mm reels I shot years ago (1960s,1970s) and they were usually on small about 3 inch reels. The last tape, by Sony was called a U matic. It was the professional tapes used before Betamax. Though Betamax lost the home video war, since the format was much better quality than VHS, it was continued to be used by professionals in video production and television stations for taping on the spot news reports then they would take them back to the station to edit and play on the air. A little surprised you didn't show an 8 track car tape. Do you have any? Keep up the great work.
I probably meant to say film but had tape on my mind LOL Thanks for the info about the U-matic, that was all new to me! I have an 8-track player and many tapes but I don't have any 8-track car paraphernalia sadly. Thanks for watching and for the info, Paul. Always appreciate your comments. A new Gary Lewis video is coming very soon!
That disc 2 inner sleeve pic with the guys on the Hondas would've been a far superior Front cover for Today! Imo.
I like that picture too. They used images from that photoshoot for their "Lost & Found" CD at one point.
@@betamaxblocker cool
As a relatively new BB fan. In 93 that first Boxset blew my mind. Especially the 70s Disc 4, which i didnt know at that time.
Lots of good stuff on that disc, including a few rarities like Our Team!
@@betamaxblocker the yelling at the beginning haha made a good segue into the TM Song fake argument 🎶🎶😅😅
Maybe the lack of 64 Chrismas sessions could have something to do with a Dick Reynolds connection?? Perhaps he has masters or some legal thing about them. Idk.
That's a very good point! I never thought of that!
I thought the philharmonic version of "Darlin" with added Strings was really good. Surprised
Many of the songs have some nice flourishes, I just they added even more and took bigger risks with them.
Great show and some interesting information shared.
Thanks for watching!
@ Welcomes and a subscriber who enjoys your channel.
For the aspect ratio complaints alot of people don’t realize or remember that ALL these stooges shorts were theatrical so they don’t really match the 1:33:1 ratio of the pre widescreen of tv shot shows, as for the boxset for these it is nice to keep them together and it came with the rarity dvd but I had to swap out the dvd that had the 3d shorts as the version in the boxset is a later release that didn’t include the 3d versions
Thanks for clearing that up- many people complain about some of the 50s shorts' aspect ratios but I always found them ok. Having never seen of their 50s work theatrically that didn't occur to me. I'm surprised the boxset didn't include the 3D ones, even the weird Blu-ray set from last summer featured them.
Right now on the Steve Hoffman Forum, there's a very lengthy discussion on every Beach Boys album called Cork On The Ocean, and the songs being discussed now are from the 1977 Christmas sessions. As part of that discussion, it was revealed that Belles of Paris and Bells of Christmas were recorded at the same session.
That's cool! I always thought Belles of Paris seemed like a last minute rewrite!
fun fun fun and i get around are 100% the studio versions with a slightly different mix, I don’t know why that was removed from the Wikipedia entry because that is definitely true, and little old lady from pasadena was re-recorded in the studio as an outtake without the crowd mixed in exists on the unsurpassed masters bootleg
That's good to know about the Unsurpassed Masters bootleg; I don't own any of them so any info I get is much appreciated. Thanks for clarification on the other point as well. I didn't want to say that wrong thing so I kept it vague. Thanks for watching!
Both of your channels are really fun to watch as I dig deeper into The Beach Boys’ work. Keep up the good work!
Glad you enjoy them! The Beach Boys are a fascinating subject and there is quite a bit to uncover (and there always seems to be more!)
A lot of people credit the Today! album as the Beach Boys taking a more of a progressive sound, but it was really the Christmas album when their sound matured.
Absolutely! Love the arrangements on that album!
Their DVD releases also play in Region 2. So this Cathy Gale surely play on Region 2 and 4 players. I use my bluray player Zone B to watch Dvds in Region 2 and 4 and it works.
That's good to know for my watchers outside of the US.
@@betamaxblocker Yes, their Manhunt, Upstairs Downstairs, Jason King and Return of the Saint DVDs are playing fine on my Region 2 bluray/dvd player. I use PowerDvd 19 program to watch it on my PC and there is no problem. ViaVision told me that even their Hawaii Five-O complete series will play on Region 2 although many sellers on Ebay claim it plays only on Region 4. I will test Hawaii when I get it early next year. :)
Hello, do you know how Imprint's edition of The Saint box on DVD looks like inside? And other similar DVD boxes of theirs? Is it a thick plastic dvd box with many discs in one box like Network did with their reissues or are there several smaller thinner plastic jewel cases inside of the big carton box? I cannot find any of their big DVD boxes anywhere on Internet to see how they look like. Could you help me? I'd be grateful. I intend to buy Edgar Wallace Mysteries and Upstairs Downstairs from them but I'd like to know how they look like inside first. :)
Sorry, I wish I could be more help but I don't have any of those sets in my collection. ViaVision is very helpful though, if you contact them then they could probably send you the specs for the Imprint DVD sets.
@@betamaxblocker Okay, thank you, I've already ordered Edgar Wallace from them so we will see soon. I guess all or the most of their DVD sets are the same like in the case of Cathy Gale box here.
This is the first video of yours that I've watched. Very well done!! Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas! I hope you enjoyed the video!
Excellent video, thank you for covering. This should have way more views. "She's Just my Style" is very Beach Boys-esque and it is one of my 2 favorite Gary Lewis and the Playboys songs also. I saw Gary Lewis on an oldies cruise a few years ago, and to my huge suprise, he sang my other favorite, "Little Miss Go-Go". I thanked him after and told him that was my theme song. He smiled and said he was surprised that anyone remembered that song. I was 3 when it was released but I'm a 60s go-go dancer girl at heart.
That's amazing that you got to meet him! I hope to see him in concert in 2025. "Little Miss Go-Go" is a fun one; I'm sure he thought is was great that you adopted it as your theme song.
Kind of disappointing to be honest, the boys deserve a much more prestigious set loaded with special features.
It's definitely all over the place; at least we get a couple unusual or exclusive things.
did You Know Edward Brophy That You Mention on This Video He Does The Voice of Timothy The Mouse in DISNEY'S DUMBO 1941 He Did in THREE STOOGES' SWING PARADE of 1946 and DANNY KAYE' WONDER MAN 1945.
Indeed! He also played opposite the Stooges in their Ted Healy short "Beer & Pretzels"- but he didn't get much to do there.

Don't Forget Christmas Comedy of TRADING PLACES 1983
How is the video quality compared to the 190 DVD sets that came out? Is blue0ray actually better?
I haven't watched through all of the Blu-ray ones yet. Once I do though, I'll make sure to do a video on it and let everyone know.
Wow! You Add BOB HOPE' LEMON DROP KID on This Video? I Have That Bob Hope Movie on VHS From 1987 and DVD 2000. I Wish You Mention Of Another Bob Hope Movie Like MY FAVORITE BRUNETTE 1947 with DOROTHY LAMOUR and PETER LORRE. 11:24

I haven't seen that one yet!
Haven't Seen What Movie?
Cool episode! Nothing says "Christmas" like crime and noir! I was intrigued to see the Lon Chaney set on your desk and particularly enjoyed the coverage of "The Unholy Three." It's such a bizarre story and, with the carnival angle, I always assumed that it was something that Tod Browning had come up with. All these years and I never knew it was based on a novel! I agree about Chaney's acting. Chaney was an absolute master of expressing thoughts and emotions effectively without sound. He's a marvel to watch. (I'm glad he lived to do at least one sound film too! No doubt he would have been able to successfully move into "talkies" had he lived longer.) Thanks for a really interesting episode!
Thanks for commenting, Steve! I wish we had more sound films from Chaney as I think he is great in his only sound picture. But his silent work is quite a legacy to leave. I haven't read the book- maybe that will be a goal for 2025!
black friday deal on ebay, $74, glad i waited to buy this one.
That's an amazing deal!
This video is exactly what I was looking for. I'm gonna have to pass on this collection for a number of reasons though. Very informative video. Thanks! Subbed.
Thanks for subbing! Glad I could be of help!
I ordered the Deluxe Vinyl "Sail On, Sailor"-Set today on Amazon. I hope it arrives in good shape. 🥲
I hope so too!
It'd be nice if there was a stand-alone Carnegie Hall cd release available, not sure I want to shell out for the Sail On Sailor deluxe, though I ultimately probably will haha. As far as future video ideas, maybe do a Mono vs. Stereo comparison and why you enjoy certain songs more in mono or stereo. A bootlegs video could be fun too.
I'm surprised they didn't do more with it for CD. It was pushed as the centerpiece of the vinyl set. There's lots of good stuff here too. I'll keep your mono and stereo idea in mind- that would make a great video. I don't have any true bootlegs, but I do like to review the weird "gray area" releases that have at least some claim to legitimacy. They're always fun to talk about. Thanks for commenting!
The BB album I listen the most!
A good choice!
Say, what would you consider a complete Beach Boys Live Collection on Vinyl? Would it include the "Sail On, Sailor" Set, because of the Carnegie Hall Concert included?
I would count Carnegie Hall as part of a complete live collection. It has some parts that are very unique to it and not replicated here.
I got this album at Christmas in 1973 and I remember Sloop John B.being on that album,I'm not sure if you mentioned it
I did, it's a cover that really stand out on the album. It must have been fun to get this one as a Christmas gift!
I think Carl chose to do the Bicycle Rider lyrics on Heroes and Villains because the Smile album was allegedly scheduled for release not long after this very concert album was released. I believe Carl actually mentions its coming release during the banter on this concert album
It's mentioned for their Carnegie Hall 1972 show but I don't think it gets mentioned here. But they were indeed tinkering with those songs for a potential Smile redo. It would have been interesting if that had come to fruition.
great review, my favourite live album but very close with the knebworth album both rock, cheers man
I should do a video on the Knebworth one too. That album rocks pretty hard as well!
After I purchased the Endless Summer compilation in 1974 when I was 11yrs old, I had to get their entire back catalog. I then purchased Carl & the Passions/Pet Sounds 2 LP set and The Beach Boys In Concert the next day. I love In Concert as it was the first time I heard the early singles & Pet Sounds material in stereo. Great presentation!
Glad you liked it! This album does a great job of showcasing both the oldies and the new material! Did you go out and buy Holland too?
Before the box set, the studio version of “We Got Love” was released as an iTunes bonus track to Holland, and is superior to the box set version, as it contains the original full length edit, not the shortened 2022 box set edit.
You're right! I forgot about that; thanks for reminding me!
I recently found your channel and enjoy your Beach Boys videos. You’re very informative and I love your humor at the beginning of each video. I picked up the 3 disc Sounds of Summer and am blown away at how good the 70s stuff is, I never knew! I’m hesitant to get their 2012 remasters catalog because part of me thinks they will remix everything like the Beatles did after they released their 2015 edition of Beatles 1.
Glad you like my videos! Plenty more to come! The group's 70s work is some of their best stuff! A great decade for them (not commercially though) and releases like Ten Years of Harmony help to showcase that. I know some of the 2012 stuff has already been remixed since but the 2012 ones are still prevalent on many later releases and will likely be used for years to come so you should be good to get them.
