    No way man, the biggest jump scare on a Beach album is on Smiley Smile where Wind Chimes gently fades to nothing....and then....SUPER LOUD ORGAN!! on the song Gettin' Hungry.

    I like it the fish eye lens, Steve! Listening to "Keepin' the Summer Alive" on vinyl when first released through an old tube stereo console (which my Mom found at a garage sale) left a lasting impression on me. When the track "When Girls Get Together" came on, the "bomp-bomp,bomp" of the bass drum (or timpani?) would shake the room. My bones are still rattling! Good episode, guys.

    Hey Betamax, cool to see you chatting it up with a fellow fan. I've been working at the computer so much lately, listening to lots of music so I'll check out these weirder picks.

    Enjoyed this, just like I enjoyed Pt.1! Wished you hadn't skipped over Stars & Stripes, Vol. 1 CD. Can see the picks you both made for each album. For 1979's L.A. (Light Album), not surprising (except for the late 1970s setting) that "Shortnin' Bread" was recorded and included on the album. It's a song Brian seems to have had an obsession with. Also, it seems to be a song (For whatever reasons) a bunch of '60s surfing groups took a liking to. The Astronauts recorded a live version of it, placing it on their second album, which was a concert appearance. The Pyramids and Trashmen may also have recordings of it. I would take anything Bruce tells you (In this instance, about the history of the song "She Believes In Love Again") with a grain of salt. So, he offered the song to Hall & Oates (A very successful recording duo during this time) and, of course, they turned the song down. WHY would they want a song from someone who had only written ONE hit (Barry Manilow's "I Write The Songs" from nearly 10 years before!) who was a member of a band that hadn't had a hit song or album in nearly 20 years at this point. Bruce has also claimed that Keith Moon of the Who wanted to join the Beach Boys, and that the Beach Boys and Who were considering recording an album together during the early 1970s.

      If we do Part 3, we will indeed cover Stars & Stripes! I never realized Shortenin' Break was such a go-to song for so many; that's good to know. I've never seen any evidence to back up what Bruce told me, so you're right about that but who knows, maybe he thought he had an "in" with someone and that would get the song done. Glad he ultimately worked with Carl on it though as it's my favorite song from Beach Boys '85. Thanks for the great comment!

    Weirdest thing about 15 Big Ones and Love You is that everyone sounds drunk on both albums. They even look drunk on the cover/back covers.

    Using the original definition of songs that are out of place, Everyone's in Love With You sticks out a lot on 15 Big Ones. Unless you redefine weird as worst song or strangest song. Talk to Me fits the vibe of 15 Big Ones perfectly.

    • @betamaxblocker
      @betamaxblocker  Месяц назад

      The only reason Talk to Me feels so weird to me is because of the Tallahassee Lassie bit. It comes from nowhere and doesn't suit the song at all. A straight version of Talk to Me would be much more grounded in my eyes. Everyone's in Love with You is a good choice for oddball too but I think it kind of goes with TM Song and even Had to Phone Ya to a degree.

  • @pauldaniels2019
    @pauldaniels2019 Месяц назад

    They didn't name Tallahassee Lassie on the album, or it would be 16 Big Ones.

    • @betamaxblocker
      @betamaxblocker  Месяц назад

      They could have cheated and put "Talk to Me/ Tallahassee Lassie" to give us at least a little warning. I know some releases call it "Talk to Me (Medley)" so I guess that kind of counts. But they definitely couldn't have made it a proper 16th song.
