    Good video. When I saw the Beach Boys live in the summer of 1994 in Vancouver, Mike made mention that the song they were about to sing, Hushabye, was on the new Beach Boys boxset. So you could hear them "sing out of key on it."

      That's cool! I think the live version on the boxset actually sounds quite good.

    I grew up with that ghastly "Wow! Great Concert!" version. It was a cheapie, and grown-ups always found and gave you all the cheapies before paying the extra buck for the good stuff. Nonetheless, I loved it like crazy.

      Some things never change, I guess LOL At least you had the cheapo Pickwick one to enjoy.

      I don't think the Beach Boys ever covered Gary Lewis' "She's Just My Style" but they really should have. They could have really knocked that out of the park. I'll be talking about that song and LP soon too!

    I like Concert.....but not as much as Live in London and In Concert. Part of it is song selection.....there are a lot of other Beach Boys tracks I would have rather have over Monster Mash and The Little Old Lady from Pasadena. Sure Papa Oom Mow Mow is fun, but I would have traded it for Wendy or All Summer Long. Having said that, as a historical document----with a pre-breakdown Brian on bass-----Concert is invaluable. Great video once again!

      They did Wendy at the Sacramento shows, but I guess they didn't think it would fit well on the album. I agree that is a valuable (and fun) historical document. And all of those oddball covers help make it unique even to this day.

    PS: Mike Love is the Joe Piscopo of rock and roll.

      I remember Piscopo sang a tribute to them at one of their big shows- I think it was the Waikiki one in 1986. I don't recall him being very good either. LOL

    First time commenter here🤓. Back in the seventies I found the reissue version and thought, “Wow! They sure sounded great live!” Then I thought “Hey wait…something is fishy here.” This was before the Internet so ya couldn’t just look stuff up. It was more like, let’s find Carl’s number and ask him.

    "Little Deuce Coupe" through "Monster Mash" were also reportedly from December 21, 1963. If so, "Long Tall Texan" was a current hit by Murry Kellum, entering the Cash Box chart on November 2, 1963, the same week as "In My Room."
    If you're wondering why the version of "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" on this album contains a verse that isn't in the Jan & Dean version, the full-page ad for the Jan & Dean single that appeared in the July 4, 1964 issue of Billboard included all of the lyrics, with that extra verse as the last verse. I don't know why Jan & Dean didn't record it that way.
    Is there anyone who knows why Carl's guitar solo is missing from the Concert version of "I Get Around"? It really sounds odd without it.

      Thanks for the heads-up about Murray Kellum's version of "Long Tall Texan." That explains alot. I didn't notice the difference in their cover of "Little Old Lady." I'll have to go back and listen for that!

    Look at those shirts.

    • @betamaxblocker
      @betamaxblocker  3 месяца назад

      That was their look until the mid-60s. They joked about throwing the shirts away starting with shows in 1967 or so.

    I get around and fun fun fun are definitely the studio recordings. it was the first thing i noticed when listening to the record and it really bothered me. I’m pretty sure the reason fun fun fun at least sounds so different is just because it was slightly sped up, but i really do wonder why they did that. maybe they just thought stuff like dennys drumming came out too sloppy on those two tracks specifically or something but idk

    • @betamaxblocker
      @betamaxblocker  2 месяца назад

      It's very noticeable on I Get Around. You can hear the cut on the CD before Mike starts the song. I think the crowd screaming covers up some of the more dubious moments on Fun Fun Fun. A very weird thing to do, for sure. It wouldn't surprise me if they mixed additional studio "sweeteners" into those tracks as well.
