  • Welcome back for more Yuletide crime capers!
Today, we travel to small town America to investigate a suicide that isn't fooling anyone in the workman-like but effective "Cover-Up" (1949.) Then, we travel back to the silent and early sound era to see ventriloquist Lon Chaney spearhead a series of robberies in the off-beat "The Unholy Three." Finally, we help Bob Hope survive the holidays in Damon Runyan's amusing "The Lemon Drop Kid" (1951.)
What are some of your favorite Christmas crime films?

Cool episode! Nothing says "Christmas" like crime and noir! I was intrigued to see the Lon Chaney set on your desk and particularly enjoyed the coverage of "The Unholy Three." It's such a bizarre story and, with the carnival angle, I always assumed that it was something that Tod Browning had come up with. All these years and I never knew it was based on a novel! I agree about Chaney's acting. Chaney was an absolute master of expressing thoughts and emotions effectively without sound. He's a marvel to watch. (I'm glad he lived to do at least one sound film too! No doubt he would have been able to successfully move into "talkies" had he lived longer.) Thanks for a really interesting episode!

Thanks for commenting, Steve! I wish we had more sound films from Chaney as I think he is great in his only sound picture. But his silent work is quite a legacy to leave. I haven't read the book- maybe that will be a goal for 2025!
