Selling the Marlin 1965

Do you like the Marlin Mrs. Campbell? Of course you do! The Marlin is really popular with the ladies. Anywhere your husband goes, he's sure to grab the attention of the single women. Not like the Ambassador, which will only impress Mr. Campell's boss and make him remember the name Campbell the next time a promotion becomes available. Oh, what's that? You want to look at the Ambassador? Well, it's a little more expensive, but I'm sure you'll be the envy of all the other housewives for having a husband that can afford such things.

I had never seen a Marlin in person until I recently visited the Rambler Ranch. I had always thought they looked odd in photos. Once I saw them in person, I fell in love. They are marvelously unique! As someone once told me, the exterior design only matters until you buy the car. Once it’s yours, the interior is what matters because that’s where you spend your time. The Marlin interior is wonderful … and, as I said, I grew to love the exterior once I saw it in person.

1:50 I'm surprised that hardtops caught on this late. They were pushing them in the 1950s, but I guess that was just for the high-end models. They didn't have many practical advantages, were obviously more dangerous in a rollover, and were more prone to leaks, squeaks and rattles, but they looked cool. I've always thought a "fake hardtop" with the B pillars a bit back from the frameless glass, would have had some of the appeal of a hardtop with better body integrity, but the closest thing I can name were the "colonnade hardtops" of the early 1970s.

Today's automakers: "You can have any exterior color as long as it's red, white, black or a shade of gray and any interior color as long as it's black or gray." Car makers spend so much money on technology, while neglecting the appeal of different exterior and interior colors.

In 71,I bought a 65 Ambassador 990 sedan. It had a 327, power steering, power disk brakes, air conditioning and a three speed with overdrive. It was a great car in pristine condition. I had it for about six months and then, like an idiot, I traded it in for a 68 Rebel SST. I should have kept that brown and white sedan, but I thought that Rebel was cooler. It had bucket seats.

I was eleven when the Marlin came out and intensely interested in cars. I don't remember thinking it was too big, I never saw one next to a Mustang. But I do remember hating that parabolic side window shape. And the front end had the same look at the Classic, just like the first Barracudas had the same front end as the Valiant. That did not contribute to appealing to young buyers. My rejection of it was based on a very superficial reaction, but curb appeal is important in selling cars, just like with houses.

The turning point, indeed. This was the year Roy Abernethy decided to move the Rambler line upmarket with "3 different sizes, 3 different wheelbases, 7 spectacular engines" because he wanted to "get rid of the old Rambler image." The sad part was it completely undid the effort to consolidate the American, Classic and Ambassadors onto two wheelbases and two sizes, with the Classic exclusively a six and the Ambassador exclusively a V-8. Between these changes and the addition of the Marlin, AMC was nearly out of business by mid-1967...

My parents had the Classic 770 4-door with the 287 V-8. The color was Barcelona Taupe. They had a 1963 Classic before that, and I thought the fit and finish and general quality control was better on the earlier car. 1963 was the year the Rambler Classic won Motor Trend's Car of the Year, likely because it was such a radical departure from the previous boxy and mundane looking cars they'd been making. The wagon interiors were nice because the cargo area was carpeted and looked kinda classy.

My parents had a 1963 Rambler Classic station wagon... It was a great dark blue with a light blue interior. One of the selling points was the "car of the year" designation. It never seemed that there was any problem with the car and I loved the back fold down seats and the joy of going to the drive-in movie with my parents and comfortably falling asleep on the back of the car with my siblings. All the Big Three cars had totally new full-size models (Ford, Chevy and Plymouth), and the mid-size field was tougher than ever with the Chevelle, Tempest, F-85 and Special, Fairlane, and cleverly repositioned Coronet and Belvedere models. AMC's attempt at flash and dash did not sit well with traditional Rambler customers and it failed to bring in new ones. Trying to match the big three model for model was impossible given their size. It has often been said that GM lost more cars through the cracks then AMC built. By 1967 AMC had to take out emergency loans to pay its bills. Unsold cars piled up in their lots production dropped 12 per cent. Annual loses were 76 million dollars which was considered an astronomical sum at the time. The Marlin never was a big seller as it was meant to be on a much shorter wheelbase of the American rather than the Classic. But management wanted it to be a six seater. and it threw the design out of proportion. Shame because now you read all of this love for the company but where were customers at the time?
