Vaporwave with no airbrush
Vaporwave Eldar using no airbrush?
We have probably all seen Dana Howls great Vaporwave Nighthaunt. But I own no airbrush so I figured out what else can be done to get the same effect.
In my case this would be drybrushing with magenta from the bottom and yellow from the top.
I use oils but it can most likely be done just as well with regular acrylics.
The need to paint vaporwave/synthwave comes from the lastet Tabletop impulse Kill Team hobby challenge where I had to paint a Corsair Voidscarred Kill Team in a synthwave colorscheme.
There is a separate video describing these things so that you don't have to sit through it if you just want to see the painted miniatures.

    No mention of the video game? I like that version a lot, since it solves a lot of issues with the physical game: like GW not making the old ogres anymore or the old modular clan rats, fog of war, not needing to find people who also play the game, not needing the physical space for a huge table, being able to go in and out of buildings easily, etc, etc. But sadly it's not modable easily, and I don't know when we'll ever see a second game, which could have added so much, like new factions, weapons, maps, better lighting, more varied buildings, etc.

    I got into Warhammer in 1988 aged 8. Skaven were my favourite faction from Fantasy. I didn't even realize they were an 'evil' faction as a kid!. Some of the 1980s range look like fairly cute little creatures IMO! I quit Warhammer in late 90s and returned in 2019. I mainly only collect things to paint. I ordered a pair of warlock engineers in 2020(?) which were metal and only discontinued quite recently. I do collect vintage skaven, mainly for Advanced Heroquest. Its the only game i've played since 2nd edition 40k. Its one of the only game I think, other than Space Hulk which was designed with solo rules and can work very well with the newer fan created rules adaptations. I have both those deathmaster minis. The logic here is very sound. The dopamine from buying new things can sometimes almost become a 'need' rather that a 'want'. I have very little self control or self discipline, but have managed to cure the excessive miniature buying problem. I noticed after a while how I would feel guilty and fairly stupid as soon as an online delivery arrived. The brief satisfaction and expectation after putting something into an online basket and paying with a credit card became the fun part. If I went into a GW or other hobby store and piked up that same product and looked at it, then the wizard would almost always override the goblin. However, when sat at a desk at home the goblin would take over. I then made a point of having all the unbuilt kits and unfinished minis I own in easy view from my desk, then once I looked at them and paused, the goblin would generally tend go away!

      3d printing will still cost you an arm for the STLs actually worth printing, then your leg for the resin and other supplies you will need. Then when you have that all together you will still need to devote time to figuring out how not to have regular print failures from the hundreds of things that can go wrong with your print in addition to the time spent getting your models off the build plate, getting rid of the supports, cleaning and curing it.

      @@mk-ultraviolence1760 This post reads like something someone who hasn't 3d printed would say. 1. STL files are plentiful and often free, even good ones, use Yeggi 2. Good printers can print hundreds of times without failure.

    • @Dedalus94
      @Dedalus94 23 дня назад

      @@mk-ultraviolence1760 Expensive? Yes. As expensive as buying from GW? No. And then you can print as many of those files as you'd like at a fraction of the upfront cost. As an example: I paid exactly $33 for all the STLs for my Necron list. They are, as far as I can tell, Identical to the real models. Now, I am printing on a bigger printer, but my cheaper printer which I could use was $200. Resin is $18/kg for the type I'm using. I can probably print most or all of the army with 1 kg of resin, but to be safe, let's call it 2. We're at $269 (nice). PPE are nitrile gloves at $10 and a respirator $30. So $309 all in if I had just started, most of the cost is reusable, thus the next print job cost will be drastically reduced. Now let's look at it if I'd bought it from GW: Void Dragon: Let's get the Christmas box $240, it's just $5 more than I would pay piecemeal and then we have some extra stuff! Silent King: $170 Trazyn the Infinite: $32 Chronomancer: $42 1 unit of 5 Immortals: Let's sub these for what comes in the Christmas box, the extra lychguards or something. 1 unit of 5 Lychguards: Christmas box 2x 3 Scarab Swarms: 1 is in the Christmas box, let's just go without the second because why would you order just 3 and we're just 40 points short so 🤷‍♂ 1 units of 3 canoptek wraiths: $62 Doomstalker: $52 Canoptek Spyder: $45 Seraptek Heavy Construct: I could not find one for less than $900, as it is not available new. However, it looks like it WAS $291 so let's use that. WG Cost: $934 Assuming you can get the perfect maximum 25% off on all these models from 3rd party retailers or used maybe, let's go with a VERY generous $700. Which means I can do my thing, starting from nothing, twice. Now, my list is crazy, but why wouldn't I have fun with it? But even a more reasonable list is as expensive or worse than my startup costs here.

      @@honestminis9530 The problem with 3d printing is you are essentially trading money for time and effort and even then you will still dump a considerable amount of money on it. Why? Well other than the cost of the machine and the resin you have all the supplies you will need to set up an area to print and the necessary safety gear to print in resin. Then you have to find files to print which yeah you can cheap out on and only use free files but I will say 80-90% of them aren't even worth printing. Then 99.9% of the time using free files you will have to support them yourself in addition to making sure your settings are correct for the file you are using. Then after all that work and money spent you will still have print failures and mistakes on the model which means more time and effort.Then you have to clean the models and cure them which means guess what? More time and/or money spent. Then after all is said and done you will look at the first free STL model with a shit ton of pock marks and finally see the actual reality of 3d printing when you buy STL files that are actually worth printing and even then you will still have all the problems listed above. To be clear here, I don't mean to be down on 3d printing with this as I myself do 3d printing and have been getting more into it just don't expect it to be the miracle that ends your GW plastic crack addiction.

    There is a fair mix of grim dark and not in all of GW stuff. Lots of the older black and white illustrations were quite grim dark whilst the miniatures were often painted in clean and clear ways to show off the sculpt in a particular way. The actual setting itself is plenty dark, not an especially cheerful place to live at all. One thing is for sure, people are free to paint their minis any way they choose be that light and cheerful or grim and dark. I personally feel different factions lean one way or another but really there is so much flexibility you can take it anyway. Wood Elves could be depicted as rough looking murderers who not only fiercely protect their lands but also might go out and hunt people beyond their forest boundaries. Wood Elves could also be depicted as fairy like with bright sort of greens and all appear super clean. Chaos to me should likely always feel a fair bit dark but even then there is whimsy such as nurglings cheerfully playing in corrupted filth and visiting their “parents” whom they erupted from and giving them some disease as a sign of their affection.

    • @honestminis9530

      I suppose that if you sell stuff it is better to be in the middle and flirt in all directions. You hit the nail on the head with 'Sillydark'! WD91 was the first one I bought - great issue as is 97 which you've also got. In WFB terms they're at the time of 2nd Edition moving into 3rd. There's a very late 2nd Ed battle scenario ('Blood on the Snow') in 91 and an early 3rd Ed one ('The Valley of Death') in 97 which one day I would love to recreate in The Old World. WFRP was always dark and sinister, but early WFB had a lot of comedy and a bit of a cartoony feel at times. But it often also did enough to have a serious side too, it trod a line where you could believe in both the fun and the serious side at the same time somehow. A lot of the artwork (though by no means all of it) in those days was plenty dark enough by anyone's standards, but the miniatures had a lot more of a sense of fun about them than modern ones. To some extent how grim or silly things were varied with different factions - Orcs (and indeed Orks) were almost always silly, Dwarfs often silly, Chaos and 40K humanity usually grim. No hard and fast rules though. MERP was a Middle Earth RPG that they stopped having anything to do with round about that issue of White Dwarf.
