Aside from RAM, I've used a base model M1 MacBook Air for the last 3 years without issue at all. Your argument is invalid. I do occasional video editing and the 256GB SSD is more than adequate for my needs. I play lots of Minecraft even though my Air only has 7 GPU cores. I get a decent 50-60fps consistently. I've played Stray and Death Stranding both without issues. There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying the base model and videos like this just add drama where there shouldn't be any.

Why do people buy the lowest base knowing they are going to do intensive work then complain? I had a M1 MacBook everyday stuff and it was fine.

I bought the 8gb m1 ages ago and it's been great. Have done photo editing (in GIMP) with loads of browser tabs open etc. and have used GeForce now for gaming. No slowdowns or anything.

The MacBook Air is the definitive soccer mom and coffee shop squatter laptop....that can do a lot of pro-level tasks. Apple's "problem" is that millions of current owners still can't justify an upgrade to M4.....the M1 MBA crushes on daily task, household or small business finances and solid image work. It is excellent for streaming. The practical longevity, fit and finish condition...even the "styling" doesn't age it. Relative to any other Mass-market Windows hardware makers, Apple makes computers to last...it always has... but now they are getting even better and much cheaper

I have the base M1 Air for almost 3.5 years now. For Webbrowsing, Emailing, Light Video Editing and RUclips this is absolutely enough. MacOS handles the 8GB of RAM pretty well and the laptop is as fast as on day on with macOS Monterrey now with sequoia. The Battery is still at 93% health after almost 4 years thats amazing. I Really dig this laptop a lot.

Base M1 Air since it's launch. Backing up everything on external SSD. Movies-Netflix, music-Spotify. Have 178GB free at the moment. Gonna install Parallels to try if I can use my eprom programmers trough VM and be all in one machine for me.

I miss the variety of ports in the old MacBooks. I find it annoying that apple didn't followed that trend in their recent laptops.

For me it depends on what are your plans and budget. If you want a secondary computer, or you are a casual user, like 99% of people including myself, finding an 8/256 model with the M1 chip for the lowest possible price might be an option: still enough space and plenty of power for web browsing of any kind, PDF reading, document editing, media consumption and casual video/photo editing (1080p or even 4k with little to no graphics effects), with all the Apple Silicon goodies when it comes to battery life and efficiency. But if you're planning to do a big leap, then probably the best thing to do is waiting for the M4 MacBook Air that will come out next spring, if not firing the bullet and buying the base model MacBook Pro that, guess what, comes with 512GB base storage. If your main concern is longevity for your new Mac computer, M4 really seems to be "The One":its architecture is mature enough from all points of view (Neural Engine, GPU, insane single core for blazing fast common usage and very strong multi core) and it will really get much more jobs done if you aim at something more serious (heck, the non-pro, non-max M4 is only 40/50% slower than a full fledged, insanely power hungry desktop PC when rendering very complex video timelines on DaVinci or Premiere Pro, and you'll get this in a fanless, easy to carry notebook. For games and 3D work on Blender? Well... that's a different story for sure, nevertheless it's unbelievable what they have achieved)

I feel like 8GB in 2024 is a bit rough. My iMac almost 10 years ago came with 8GB baseline but was upgradable. My M2 Pro Mini with 16 was swapping like 5+GB just playing WoW on 1440p. I'd rather upgrade the RAM and add external storage. Looking at like Apple now finally raised the base amount just because it would have lead to a disaster selling all these products with AI stuff when even iPhones are reaching the RAM amounts the base spec Macs have.

I don’t agree at all. MBA M1 is the only clamshell design macbook left, which is much more ergonomic that the squarish ones.

I had to upgrade because battery life is so poor. I had AMD Radeon Pro 5500M graphics which drained the battery so fast. Unlike older Macbooks, it isnt possible to force switch to the integrated Intel chip and lots of standard apps would activate the discrete AMD card (e.g. all Abobe suite apps). I'm trying it now after using a 14inch MacBook Pro M2 Max for about 1.5 years. I didnt look back after switching but revisiting the 16" screen is interesting and definitely has its value. The 14" is like a baby in comparison - so cute!

I dont really care about upgradability. It’s repairability that is the issue. If I can only replace the old ssd with a working new one of the same size and speed is fine.

For most people, it’s probably not the best choice, but I picked up a refurbished i9 version for $450, and I’m really happy with it. It works great for what I need. I don’t really like the layout of macOS, so I’m using Windows on it for editing. The build quality is amazing for the price. I bought a similarly priced Lenovo laptop but returned it within a week because the hinges got so loose!

Only con with my 2015 MacBook Pro is I could not find any use for those two Lightening ports.

I honestly fully agree with this. The 2015 15" MacBook Pro is really *really* good still, especially for how cheap you can get it nowadays. I use mine for freelance game music, which it handles hundreds of tracks perfectly, although not all of them are active. In reality, I usually only have maybe 20 or 30 instrument tracks actually active and running, and if I need more, I usually bounce to a seperate track and mute the source track to save on cpu and ram. I did get this thing used, for about 250$ with the box and accessories, and the seller barely used it. The battery was at 18 cycles when I got it, with battery health at 100%, It was incredibly clean, and there was virtually no dust in the fans or on the board anywhere. I chose this specific machine because my Windows laptop at the time had just broken, and I needed a 250$ or less laptop that'd work for music, while also still supporting all the plugins I use on a daily basis. I use old plugins from the early 2000s, such as SONiVOX's Orchestral Companion series, Kontakt 4 and 5, and EastWest's PLAY sampler. None of these work that well with M1 or newer MacBooks under rosetta(and certainly not natively), so having an intel mac was kinda required. I've since upgraded some of these that I could, switching a couple of my EastWest Libraries to Opus, but I *still* use this 2015 15", and I will continue to use it until it dies, despite having an m3 15" air that I use for college and daily use.

Replace the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU with Arctic MX-4 or MX-6. Given the age, the thermal paste will almost certainly have begun to fail by now. I think the Arctic MX-4 has an in use lifespan of 8 years. This will improve heatsink performance and keep the CPU in a safe operating range, particularly if you’re gonna be using OCLP which will definitely tax the CPU.

Fun fact: the MacBooks Pros only had silver bezels on models with a matte finish display - not a lot of them were sold.

Watching it on my MacBook Pro 16 2019 1TB, 16GB. Yes I am about to upgrade, a bit slow for Davinci Resolve currently. For normal use it is still a great machine 👍

Shiny screen, not upgradable, not customizable, not serviceable, cannot implement in corporate environment. A Latitude, Thinkpad or Elitebook can do all this, without being named pro.

2012 Retina 15, they are plagued by bad solder on power controller( u8900 ) that feeds the nvidia graphics, it can be resoldered but at least in the uk, i get quoted about £240 to do so.

At first it was the greatest achievement for Apple in years, now the influencers say it's a crappy machine. Anything to get clicks because they don't have enough imagination to create original content. It still does what it was meant to, it's an Air for goodness sake.

I'm using my Macbook Air 2015 as my daily driver and heavily on Photoshop and still going strong even with 2863 cycle counts already LOL! That's why I thought of buying another one however I end up buying a Macbook Pro 2015 instead but its battery is not that good.

I wonder how's the battery life of this thing when it first came out?
