This model still works perfectly fine for all office tasks and even iMovie. It’s incredible to type on as well. The clicky keyboard is just special. Apps open slowly but once they’re open they’re super fast, no real life difference between this and a new MacBook.
Well there would be in editing multiple timelines in Final Cut, doing any gaming and using the graphics card to a high modern standard! But yes, they’re very nice still
The solution to data recovery problems with soldered storage is to not need data recovery in the first place. External SSDs, iCloud, onedrive/office 365, google drive, Dropbox and time machine backups to a NAS are all cheap alternatives to needing to do any sort of data recovery. Keep regular backups people, please.

I have the 2016 model, purchased reconditioned in December of 2016, which I have recently upgraded with a 16G RAM and 512GB SSD, year 2017 motherboard (they are 100% compatible). I have also replaced the original battery. The keyboard and screen are in perfect condition. It is currently running macOS Ventura. It's one of the best computer I have ever owned, and I have owned many since the eighties. It should not be viewed as a main computer. It's a secondary computer, and in this role I find it vastly superior to an iPad. Because it's so portable, over the years it has followed me everywhere, and I have clocked an impressive number of hours working in Xcode on it. Today, developing an iOS app on it has become difficult, because Xcode and the iOS Simulator have become too slow for this machine, but I can still use it for this purpose when I'm not at my desk, and for many other tasks: writing texts, watching videos, composing music with LMMS, developing console apps in C... It has all the versatility of a macOS machine with unmatched portability. I would purchase an Apple Silicon version of this Mac without any hesitation.

i would be all over an apple silicon 12 inch macbook that was fanless and at least on par with M1 performance. gotta make do with typing this on the glass of my ipad mini 6

That won't happen because of the problematic keyboard. Maybe a slightly thicker model with a more conventional keyboard .....but somehow, I think, that is not the route Apple is going. My best guess is 13" will stay the smallest, but of course, I also don't know.

It's feasible, my 13" Thinkpad Nano weighs just as much as my 2017 Retina MacBook (the one in the video) and it has a decent keyboard. But there are no rumors of this MacBook making a comeback so I am keeping mine for a few more years.
Watching this on my 2009 17" Macbook with 8GB RAM, 2TB SSD & running Monterey which i find is quite responsive and capable. I feel this 12" Macbook series is best for people travelling that don't want a heavy laptop in their luggage taking up space, it should be treated like an iPad with a keyboard considering it has about the same amount of ports as one
They should bring this back as the entry laptop with detuned M1/M2. Just like Air represents mid tier and Pro being the highest, they should also make base MacBook as smallest and entry level.
I've got the lowest spec, base model 2015 edition of this classic machine and never had a problem with it. Dodged every bullet that the technorati say it 'should' have. Keyboard is still fine after 9 years. I've got it running Sonoma on OCLP and it can handle Xcode and an iPhone simulator (it's not exactly happy about it, but it does it!). I replaced the battery a few months ago and was amazed to discover the tiny size of the logic board. I'd somehow not known it was about the size of 1 and a half credit cards. Wow. Surely Apple can revive this form factor in the M-era?

Hey man, very nice video. I am in a situation where i need a laptop and i found a 2015 12” for 400€. I know it seems much but in my country every apple product is 200€ more than elsewhere. Anyway i saw that you can install win 10 on these older macs and that it works better than macos. So what do you think, should i do something similar with this one? I would be using it for yt, emails, office etc.
I ended up buying a 2015 MacBook Pro 15 inch for £180...I was due to get an M1 air but this came up and I thought why not...I had watched your MBP 2015 video, and sadly this has the 2.2Ghz, but 16GB of RAM and 256GB SSD isn't too bad, I can upgrade the SSD too of course. Have I messed up? :D
For £180 you made the right choice going Intel I think. You can always upgrade to M1 in years to come. Unless you use the graphics for gaming or other 3D stuff you genuinely won’t need it. I think you’re fine!

I think the 2017 15” doesn’t have particularly great performance versus older machines like the 2015 which have more ports and upgrade / self repair potential. It’s undeniably a brilliant looking machine though

Closest you can get in the same style is the M1 MacBook Air. It’s bigger, but still very slim and compact!
This 12inch Retina was likely the catalyst for the introduction of M chip machines.

Yeah that’s a very fair point. I guess for those less technologically inclined it’s harder to keep doing those things, though.
For this particular model, time machine to a local network drive such as Time Capsule or a HDD to Apple Airport Extreme is more practical.
A 12 inch Silicon MacBook, A iPhone 15 Mini, A Silicon iPad mini, that is all I need.
