      Not an apples to apples comparison (pun unintended lol) but Unifi equipment is absolutely delightful. The Dream Machine and the Dream Router are both great devices I recommend endlessly

    I had an AirPort Express for 9 years from 2008-2017. It was a bit outdated when I replaced it but it worked incredibly well and it remains the easiest WiFi experience I have ever had

    Plus 1 from here!
    I have been buying these off of ebay over the past year or so and now I have finally one in each room of our apartment and we have all room audio for much cheaper than the ever expensive sonos and others.

    I'm stoked to see the buildout of the least powerful intel mac. I was just thinking about my ~2006 mac mini because it was also able to act as a router and I have very fond memories of my uncle showing me how to set it up so I could Skype around the house!

    For those in the Android world, the Chromecast Audio is another Just Werks device for streaming audio. I use mine less as the room it's in has become a storage dump, but they still work last I used it.

    My aunt has an Airport Extreme, perfect for Internet radio, email, web browsing. It was sitting in a cupboard for years, reset it and had to boot a Mac running 10.6 to configure it

    I have a couple of these. Initially just to extend and secure my WiFi network. I’d not used them for years, but now looking at utilising them for my home office and lounge music systems.
    I like them and there doesn’t seem to be similar (or much better) alternatives on the market.

    I've got a few of these as client devices on my network so I can Airplay to iPod HIFIs and a Bose SoundDock 10. For the longest time I was using Airport Extreme and Express units for my entire home network, but the capabilities, security, speed, and coverage finally persuaded me to move on last fall.

    Can this be used just as a hub for 3.5 mm audio and a printer? I don't want to use it as a access point, because I have a faster wi-fi available, but I would quite like to print over the network... Great video, as always!

      @@lachlanlau as far as I’m aware, the USB port is for things like printers only. It’s USB2.0 anyway so probably wouldn’t be much good. I guess you could plug something powered in via Ethernet, but that kinda renders the AirPort Express redundant…

    I have *atempted* to investigate the AirPort Express before, and my original conclusion was that it’s useless. However, after watching your video, I now just want one all of a sudden again! Here in China, they cost about 100 rmb, that’s like only a bit more than 10 pounds.

  • @AnoshterHaar
    @AnoshterHaar 3 месяца назад

    The 100 mbit tho, makes this thing a snail in a nice enclosure. I know I am one of few people having a gbit download speed. But above 200mbit is often the default for a lot of subscriptions these days (at least in europe) so these things will just bottleneck like crazy. Not to mention the possible security risks involves using quite outdated wifi gear/protocols. Not a big thing yet, but soon to be.
    I get the experience and stuff and ease of use. No such thing exists elsewhere. But there are alternatives for making speakers airplay compatible. And imo networking gear just has to be functional. If you wanna make it look good, just put it away sonewhere, mount an ap to a ceiling or use mesh devices that are often quite stylish too these days. Which will give you a way way faster experience, especially when using a feature like mu-mimo in crowded network setups.

    I have a Linksys RE6500 which is nearly identical in function. Airplay and wifi audio streaming right into a 3.5mm jack on the back. Wired access point and wifi (2.4+5) booster modes too, with gigabit ethernet. Might be a good alternative for anyone looking at these.
