Doing my best to make helpful tutorial videos for synthesizers and other sorts of electronic music gear. I've also started uploading some short ambient music videos (see the Delta Waves playlist).
I love sound and how we experience sound, so I try to incorporate some science, math, pyschology, philosophy, etc. into these videos whenever I can. I've also started the Undulations ASMR channel, so make sure to check that out too (see Links).
I'm learning along the way and hope you do too. Thanks a lot for watching.

Kastle Arp: Tutorial 1 + Bonus Ending
This video is the first in a series of tutorials about the Kastle Arp (a semi-modular synthesizer made by Bastl Instruments). This is a pretty long one! It starts slow but ramps up by the end, and it leaves us in a great position to do some complex patching in the next video of the series. I decided to do it kind of like an old series I did on the MakeNoise 0-Coast: constrain the number of patch cables. So, the first part of this video is with no cables at all, and then a lot of the rest of it is done with just 1 patch cable. Wishing RUclips could play at 3x speed
excellent video. Have you noticed any issues on the volca modular where the fm modulation sounds pure in the upper range of the ribbon controller, but when you drop down to the lower range it gets wobbly and out of tune?

I dismissed the Kastle line when I first saw them but now that I’ve gotten them, I am completely fascinated. Part of that fascination comes from these amazing videos. Thank you for taking the time to break down each element so thoughtfully. Great stuff.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. As someone struggling with the modular concepts of these Bastl synths, your clear and concise demonstration has put everything into context for me. Wait stop. For using noise machine you need an app to run on the phone 🤔 and everything that you do you can do on the phone 🧐 it's more like fun tool
Yeah it’s just a midi controller. We don’t need more midi controllers. We need more compact analog synth/beat/production devices. Musicians shouldn’t need to plug their instrument into a computer to make sounds.

I have the original Werkstatt without the extra jack panel. Does anyone know how to wire a patch cable to that? There is no ground and patch cables have 2 wires inside. Yet the Werkstatt only has one connection for CV in
You're right that you need to co-ground the Werkstatt and a piece of external gear. There are a couple of routes you can take: 1) use the audio ground. it's possible that just plugging the two devices into an audio mixer will connect the grounds. you can also use an audio splitter to create open access to the Werkstatt ground (ground is the plug's sleeve conductor, the signal is the plug's tip conductor. you can do stuff like lop off the plug and connect to the ground to the remaining wire. 2) the screws in the Werkstatt faceplate are ground, so you can hook a ring or spade lug to one of the screws and connect that to the other gear. a lot of ways to proceed, but a reasonable temporary method is just with two alligator cables: ground alligator cable goes from the sleeve of the incoming 1/8" patch cable to a (slightly loosened) panel screw on the Werkstatt, signal alligator cable goes from the tip of the incoming patch cable to one side of a tiny patch cable, other side into the Wekstatt. Taping stuff to a board can make this setup easier and prevent stuff making accidental contact. Wekstatt is quite robust to voltage but try to start with stuff turned down. Careful hooking Werkstatt to other small-cable synths, sometimes they use a lower max voltage. Best of luck👍🏻!
@@undulations thanks. I just got a wire from a ground point on the PCB and fed it out in a crack in the chassis. then i stuck that in a breadboard

This is a great video but seems like I have a little issue, for some reason once I am done with the sequence and press play nothing is playing, the light on the play button does not even light up. Anyone has an idea what I might have messed up here? I do everything as in the video. Thanks
Hey, it has been a minute, but I think there was an update that really changed some of the sequencer stuff. I recall that it made some of the stuff I was doing, like changing sequences, no longer worked. Anyway, not sure if this is the root of the issue you have encountered? Do arpeggios work? In sequencer mode, can you start the sequence by pressing a keyboard key? Let me know. I probably need to update mine but I can try to help.

@@viktorplevnes9958 Well, I guess the first thing to check is one of the Arturia sequences. So, make sure to save stuff if you need to, and then go down to the lower preset numbers and scan for a preset with a sequence (arp/seq light blue is probably the best way to find one). Then try the basics: play button, sequence B button, sequence A button, stop (play button again), and see if the keyboard plays the sequence (transposed). Let me know👍🏻.
@@undulations I figured it out. Since I am playing dawless I had to change the source to INT...it was set to USB before...so if someone else is asking and looking for an answer, utility>sync>source> INT

I can't find the comment, but somebody suggested that I try the Kastle Arp and Volca Modular together. It's kind of challenging, in that they do somewhat similar things (not sure if that makes sense). Anyway, I tried a variety of schemes, opted for normal mode (i.e. not Boot Mode) and the Arp syncing the Modular. I did some preliminary tuning in Boot Mode, then set things up such that they weren't just in lockstep together (which can be pretty dull). Then I used each to complicate the sound of the other - headphones will reveal some of the nuances and a couple of nice hollow bass hits. I should mention that it really takes some headphones or speakers to do the Arp justice here🎧. I have the Timbre setting all the way down, seems best for this patch, but it leaves the low, thumpy stuff quite smooth and hard to resolve on a phone or such (albeit tablet speakers can be surprisingly clear). A pretty bonkers patch on the Kastles Arp and 1.5. I don't normally patch a signal to Mode on the 1.5, quickly gets very complex, but this sort of held up. I didn't really document but I was doing a familiar thing: sqr to lfo rst, tri to wav - but then i carried that on to mode. The yells? Not really sure🤷🏻♂️. Have been listening to some Skrillex lately, idk. Anyway, some of those low, booming, metallic FM hits are really cool. No FX or post-processing. I recorded it into a Sony digital voice recorder (but it is quite nice, like a mini field recorder). Hope you can enjoy it in headphones at some point🎧. #kastlearp #kastlesynth #undulations

reminds me very much of an old 'photo theramin' synth box thing (arp with a photocell and an led, modulating all). EXCEPT this one is way more listenable, versatile, and less annoying.
