- Happy New Year! In this video I talk plans and then go into some sound design details about 7 different clips I made for Jamuary on Instagram (dr_nim2014 over there, btw). Discussion and thoughts about Model:Cycles, MicroGranny, NTS-1, SQ-1, Volca Modular, 0Coast, BitRanger, Thyme, and a variety of fx. More info in the timeline below.

I discuss whatever the RUclips equivalent of writer's block is - and solutions. I discuss plans for upcoming videos about the MicroBrute, MicroFreak (Noise Engineering update!), and general sound synthesis.
01:53 JAMUARY 2nd
Model:Cycles, dabbling at making a pad (without an attack knob...). Dynamic range issue here, heard it differently when I was doing it (on the same system). Feel like it sounds better on a phone. The basic plan is using a track LFO (reset ON) running the "ramp" shape to target the Volume+Distortion setting (i.e. the track has a low default volume that gets a smooth increase from the LFO, and then the release takes over. a little tricky to play but it works.)
03:36 JAMUARY 4th
I made a clip in Ableton Live and then planned to granulate that in the MicroGranny... BUT, I liked how it sounded after slowing it down 1/2, put it over some night beach footage from last year and considered it done. A moral for myself here: listen carefully to everything along the way, some midpoint might be better than the endpoint you have in mind. Note: I rarely do this (and that should change) but I put a loop of this audio as the soundtrack to the "boat bus" scene in the middle of The Ghost in the Shell - it fit pretty nicely!
04:53 JAMUARY 5th
This is the Bastl Instruments BitRanger paired with the Korg NTS-1. The BitRanger is a live wire, tbh. Lightning in a bottle. I spent time setting up the NTS-1 arpeggio and other settings (it was synced with an overridden clock), and even more time getting a groove on the BitRanger that I liked. But then, I checked having a clock to the VCO cv input, which has a slewing factor (i.e. it's not abrupt) - and if it works out right it can really blend nicely into a pattern. I decided I just wanted one burst of that in a 60 second clip, so I did it with a wire. After half a dozen tries, I lucked out and got some timing that I really liked, a timbral melody that is pretty pleasing (again, LUCK) - and I managed not to frick up the rest of the shot. I later took the part of the clip that I liked and made an audio loop out of it (that's the sound for the BONUS CLIP mentioned below).
06:27 JAMUARY 6th
0Coast getting controlled by the SQ-1 (and by the Dwarfcraft Devices Happiness pedal LFO CV Out). Through the Happiness then reverb from the Nux Atlantic, and lastly some chorus from the Walrus Audio Julia.
09:01 JAMUARY 9th
Korg Volca Modular into Bastl Instruments Thyme. This clip holds a moral of simplification: I was originally using the Bastl SoftPop Synth as another voice, but it seemed too complicated for a 60 second shot.
11:25 JAMUARY 14th
This one might be my favorite of the lot. Kalimba sample that I took into Audacity, did some different processing to, and played the results on the MicroGranny. It's interesting to me how LITTLE of the samples are really required to get reasonable variety. I'm probably using just a few % here.

13:29 JAMUARY 17th
Casio Privia keyboard into Bananana Effects Aurora delay pedal and then into the Meris Ottobit Jr. pedal. It is a lot going on and the timing for playing has to be pretty precise (I should have probably used a metronome...). Also a field recording of the only non-rain precipitation that we've had here in almost a year. I could go for some snow. Jam 16 (not included) is an homage to my hometown up in the mountains of NC - has been about a year.

Microbrute looks like a best choice for synth basics, tbh. Also I noticed your jams become less abstract and more melodic) Interesting)
Oh, and that cat episode looped almost perfectly- didn't notice the loop for the fist few rounds at all. I bet there's a surgical grade of frame cutting involved.
