Bastl Kastles: LFO Sounds (Part 2)

- Video 2 (of 2) about getting sounds out of the LFO's on the Kastle 1.5 synth and the Kastle Drum (both made by Bastl Instruments). This video has some things that are Drum-only (because I assume that there are folks out there that don't have both Kastles; the Part 1 video has quite a bit of things that are 1.5-only). I also use the Bastl Dude mixer a lot in this video, as well as the Korg NTS-1 for FX (it's become a guilty habit; is stereo, usb, and 3.5mm - pretty ideal in this case!). Occasional patch notes below, but most of the patches are straightforward - so it's probably more helpful to just watch. I hope you find some things in this video that you like (it's kind of a long one). Thanks a lot for watching!
TIMELINE
00:00 STARTER
00:21 INTRO
02:24 ASIDE
Some signal output methods.
A discussion of using a mixer (in this case the Bastl Dude) to collect Kastle signals and why it's important to the audiorate LFO concept. Also the bizarre notion of what I call 'relative grounding' (but all grounding is relative, so maybe it's not the best term...)
11:12 KASTLE REVERSAL
Using 'PATTERN' as the aLFO. Maybe a better setup using osc_out to clk_in.
This one was kind of tough to really get tuned up on camera, so there are a lot of video cuts. It's either that or 45 minutes of me going "wait, why did i do that?" or "oh no, i'll never get that melody back!". So here are some patch notes for it. Audio is coming out of the Drum i/o jack. The drums start a little weak, did not have a good decay setting, but they improve. I'm using an aux cable for co-grounding (Drum's main Out jack hooked to 1.5's i/o jack).
PATCHES - drums -- drum i/o left, pattern -- drum i/o right, osc out -- clk in, stepped -- pMod_1.5, stepped -- dMod, stepped -- pMod_drum, minus_1.5 -- bit in, tri_lfo_1.5 -- wave, sqr_lfo_1.5 -- lfo rst, lfo_drum -- feed, lfo_drum -- decay, clk -- tMod_1.5.
SETTINGS - dMod(near max), pMod_drum(1130), tempoMod(min), decay(0300), drum(min), pitch_drum(0930), tempo(0930), pMod_1.5(1130), timbreMod(0930), rateMod(min), waveshape(1000), pitch_1.5(0900), timbre(min), rate(0130).
19:39 DRUM ONLY
Drone patch and 'arcade' patch.
29:47 COMBO PATCH
Using the 1.5 to sequence the Drum 'arcade' sound. Using the building blocks of these videos to make some pretty complex music.
34:54 BONUS PATCH
A subtle feedback patch. This one is a long story. See my "Baud Rate Blues" post on Instagram (04 08 2022) for another example.
40:52 OUTRO
Moving on from the Kastles.
42:08 ENDER
I don't think think this actually has any audiorate LFO anywhere in it. I am mixing in some unusual Kastle signals. One voice is basically just the Drum's main sound, but then there are some LFO clicks, some wobble-bass type sounds that come from a 'Kastle Minute' 1.5 patch that I posted to Instagram, and then - somehow - there is a small strange melody (that I had to amplify quite a bit with the Dude) coming out of the Kastle Drum's DECAY patchpoint. Makes no sense, but that doesn't matter. Видеоклипы
Thanks for another inspiring and fun video. The "arty" ambient patch at the end with the random "ripping" noise is my favourite. In fact, i tend to stay clear of the hi-pitched arcade tones made by these machines - i didn't grow up playing video games.
Hey, thank you very much🙏🏼! I hear the very tail end of that part sometimes when I scroll down my Instagram feed, but I had forgotten about actually building it on camera. That low melody sort of ties it all together (wish I'd let it run like that a little longer). Thanks again for watching and commenting!
No one explores a synth like you. I love sound design, but it's hard to invest the time into it. So I much appreciate your work here. Bastl should feature you in some way.
Thank you very much! I'm glad to hear that the content on here is useful to your explorations! Bastl reached out a while back and includes 3 or 4 of my videos in their YT playlists. They also feature my posts on Instagram in their IG "story" quite a bit, which is nice because there is a cool Kastle community over there. Oh, I almost forgot, they have done some "Bastl Challenge" contests on IG as well, based on voting - I won one, btw😺! Anyway, I appreciate the thought! And thanks again for checking out the video!
Thanks for doing this. I love these little boxes
You're welcome! Thanks for checking it out🙏🏼!
Yes really enjoyed the series. Thank you for sharing your exploration of those two instruments.
You're very welcome! Thanks much for the feedback🙏🏼!
Thanks so much for these. I already loved these instruments, but your videos make me love them even more.
That is great to hear! I really appreciate your feedback🙏🏼!
so NICE💎
Thanks for checking it out, man🙏🏼!
Wasn't aware on how good these sound (you make all gear sound crazy tho something about you reminds me about chris carter from tg.. dont knwo if its the look, or the good sounds). I shall grab these two.
thanku for sharing!
That's high praise, thanks!
Yes, seems like so much fun and potential for the money! Thanks a lot for checking out the video🙏🏼!
The drum only patch towards the final sounds like the Bitranger, isn't it?
