4 YEARS: Krell-like Patch (SQ-1 + 0Coast + M1)

- My first video on this channel was in early November, 2018 (it was about the Volca Kick). It's like Undulations has finished undergrad. I was planning to post a Short to mark the occasion, but I felt like it didn't do this setup justice. So, instead, it's a few minutes of me setting it up and about 7 minutes of the patch just running (all I do is start it and stop it). The patch is "Krell-like" in a sense (time and pitch variation), but it's not correlated the way that an actual Krell patch is. I think I've done 4 or 5 videos that mention the Krell patch in some shape or form, so it's a fitting topic for an anniversary upload. Similarly, the 0-Coast and the SQ-1 have been some really core pieces of gear on this channel. The Walrus Audio M1 is brand new, but the beautifully unstable tremolo and amazing reverb really fits the situation. Thanks for watching, and thanks also for the many kind comments! This channel has certainly been a labor of love and has helped me understand a lot of different things, but hearing that it has, on occasion, helped somebody else - that really means a lot!
ps There is a different 80 second clip of the same setup over on Instagram (dr_nim2014).
TIMELINE
00:00 INTRO
A little setup, but the main details are covered below.
03:30 "JOURNEY TO L2"
I decided to name this shot because it has an intact beginning and ending, no edits. The name relates to NASA's James Webb Space Telescope. It had a brave voyage out to the middle of nowhere (the Earth-Moon L2 Lagrange Point), which it now orbits. I think this all came to mind because I tried adding some shortwave radio noise (but later removed it); there are a lot of signals coming and going all the time. The Webb signals are from so long ago, and the shortwave probably picks up some very old stuff too.
This patch is kind of like one I did with the SQ-1 and the Moog Werkstatt.
Slope cycle is on. The SLOPE EOC out goes to both the TEMPO input and the SQ-1 Sync In (I use a knucklebone mult for this fanout). Then the very basic SQ-1 CV A out to 1V/Oct on the 0Coast and SQ-1 Gate out to the Contour Gate in. Then, the critical detail: Stepped Random Voltage out to the Attenuverter In (right side) and the Attenuverter Out (right side) to the Slope's TIME in. The Attenuverter setting (about 0200) is critical for getting a spread of sequence timing that you like. Pitch about 0900. Overtone about 1100. Multiply about 0700, the Multiply Attenuverter about 0200. Rise about 0300. Fall about 0300. Slope shape about 0330. Attack min, Sustain min, Decay about 0230, Contour Shape about 1100. Balance is at 1200. Dynamics is maximum.

Hey Undulations… literally just bought the 0-Coast and the SQ1… literally no idea how these two work together…. Can you recommend a good video or site to look at please….. I copied your krell patch just before my sq turned up and I love it… cheers Matt
Hey, it's a great combo! Watching Andrew Huang's RUclips video about the 0-Coast (controlled by the SQ-1) is one thing that really got me further into synthesis.
Video-wise, I've got an 0-Coast playlist on here. The Basic Ambient Patches video has been pretty well-received. Then, soon after starting the channel I did a series called "One-Hitch Wonders" - which is learning about the 0-Coast by using just 1 patch cable. Meanwhile, I've got a video called "Defamiliarizing the Korg SQ-1" on here - and even though a lot of that is about using 2 SQ-1's at the same time, it still might be useful. A lot of people seem to like the ending of that video (myself included) - 2 SQ-1's hooked to 0-Coast and some effects. Also, my Instagram (dr_nim2014) has a lot of SQ-1 and 0-Coast clips that aren't on here. Lastly, on a lot of this video content I try to put patch notes down in the description or comments (so even if I don't describe the patch in the video it might be given in text); you can also just ask about any of the patches and I'll try my best to remember.
The most fundamental "modular synthesis" way to connect the two pieces of gear is to patch the SQ-1 CV-A (out) to the 0-Coast 1V/Oct (in) and then the SQ-1 Gate-A (out) to the 0-Coast Gate (in). Use one of the 16-step sequence settings on the SQ-1. This gives a 16 step sequence, CV based pitch control, and CV based gate control. The Pitch knob on the 0-Coast sets your root frequency. The Contour sub-module settings on the 0-Coast set your envelope shape. The Slope and Harmonics sub-module settings on the 0-Coast (with the little slope repeat button turned on) give your overall sound. I'd say start with the SQ-1 CV range set to 5V (press function and it's an option), put the duty cycle knob somewhere in the middle (this comes into play with the 0-Coast sustain setting).
You'll find you can get a ton of different sounds. You can have a lot of different sequence choices by choosing the SQ-1 scale (I typically use minor or chromatic). The SQ-1 choices like Active Step, Slide, and Step Jump are underrated. Slide takes some experimentation. Step Jump, holding down multiple buttons for mini-sequences turns the SQ-1 into a real instrument.
In 16-step modes the CV-B and Gate-B outputs are just copied from A. You can use the B to control something else, but with 16 steps it's basically like using a patch cable stacker or splitter. Channel B really shines when you go to the 8-step modes and it can be a different set of CV values. So, for example, you can have CV-A, Gate-A as above, ignore Gate-B for a bit, and then patch CV-B to the time control (is it called Time? maybe Decay?) on the 0-Coast Contour. This allows 8 notes in the sequence, each with its own envelope decay. In simplest form it can be a sort of morse code type of groove, like short short short long, etc.
Then MIDI is a whole different can of worms! I hope this helps! Thanks for checking out the channel.
@@undulations this is great thanks mate… I’m music teacher in a psychiatric hospital getting patients with limited music knowledge to make music with odd music devices… your info will definitely get the ball rolling… shame I can’t copy and paste from RUclips id be printing this off… 🤦♂️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Your Krell patch is the most meaningful I've heard. This is your Greek friend situated somewhere in the North Aegean. Happy anniversary and a big THANK YOU! for everything you do. Our last communication was left unfinished, you said that you would analyze the gong sound. But didn't hear from you after that. I bought the VOLCA MODULAR a few weeks ago and I must say I am in love with it. The sounds I'm making are unbelievable. Thanks to your instructions and everyone else I found. Patching the SYNC OUT with the CV IN to make FUNC 1 an LFO, by the way, is a stroke of pirate genius, me thinks ahrrrr!... and ....I found a lot of uses for it. Again Thanks! And I hope for the best.
Happy anniversary! You are and have been a great contributor to the sound synthesis community - always interesting. Hope for many more years of Undulations.
Happy anniversary (and happy new year)!
Whenever I read M1 I think it’ll be about the Korg, my first love.
Ahhh, that totally makes sense. I've never used one but I bet it's great (I think maybe I've used an emulator?). Anyway, happy new year to you as well🥳!
Your videos clearly have brought me to shed my inhibitions about "being a musician" and allowed me to just "make some music". You are definitely more knowledgable and skilled than I am and have a better ear than I have (which is why your channel is useful and interesting, and I can't even think of why I would film myself playing my tunes 😅). I hope you'll continue taking us on these deep dives into sound. 🎂
I have you to thank for my Volca Drum collection :) This track sounds fantastic. Always had my eyes on a 0-Coast.
Congrats Dr! My journey into small synths started with you and I have learned a lot from your channel. I love how you dive deep into sound design with simple tools that really explore sonic structure and possibilities. I hope you keep going for 4 more years, because I will be here!
Beautiful. I really like your peacefull and deep synth music explorations. It’s unique among the channels i follow.
Ur my new favorite late night music channel to watch and learn from, thanks for sharing🎉
Great track! Like bouncing around weightless in space forever. And happy anniversary! 👨🚀🎉
happy anniversary, dr. nim!! I love your insights so much!!
Thank you very much! Happy New Year!
@@undulations happy new year to you year!!
Happy anniversary, looking forward to many years of great content!
Congrats on anniversary! Always appreciate the inspiration and the education!
congratulations on anniversary! your videos are always an endless source of inspiration and knowledge!
beautiful soundscape.
Thanks so much🙏🏼!
(I need to go back and listen to it🤔)
Thanks very much for the music, it is feeding my ears. Synthesizers are completely unknown to me, I might want to ask questions when i have begun to understand what's happening.
Sure, feel free to ask whatever, I'll do my best👍🏻. Thanks for checking out the video🙏🏼!
you mentioned in one video that you play ambient music on piano, i'd like it if you showcased that at some point! regards N.
Congratulations! Get further to the next 4 years! Greetings 🖖☺️
Great work. Happy anniversary of the channel! 🎉
Many, many thanks🙏🏼!
Really beautiful stuff. Congratulations on 4 years!
Thank you! I really appreciate it🙏🏼!
that is truly a delight. thank you for sharing that. thank you and congratulations for four years of calm, understated goodness here on youtube. whenever i see another of your videos or shorts has dropped it becomes the first thing i watch because i know i will be both entertained and educated. take care.
Much appreciated! You take care as well🙏🏼.
Sorry, commenting on all your recent videos, but...I've learned so much from your videos on the 0-Coast, both Kastles and most especially the Volca Drum series. As you say in your description, you use the SQ-1 a lot and I'm curious what made you choose it over other sequencers. I use an OP-Z and sometimes a Digitakt for sequencing, but I love the design and apparent simplicity of the Korg device.
