  • This is an INTRODUCTORY video about using different types of CABLES with popular lower-cost synthesizers and for music production in general. This might be the longest video I've posted on this channel? It's a tutorial, BUT it might be better to think of it as a collection of tutorials. There are sections on many different types of cables (patch, audio, MIDI, usb) and their applications in music production (including a few demos). I'm going to put a helpful timeline below, so feel free to jump to the area that you are interested in. If you have a specific question then feel free to leave me a comment and I'll do my best to come up with an answer. Thanks a lot for watching!
note: "101" here is just to mean that I feel like the content is a pretty good place to start. university classes in the States that were 101 classes were typically the class you started with. i don't think it's used much any more, but that's the spirit of it.
bonus joke: two students from the logic department are having lunch. first student says "Are you taking Binary 101?". second student says "No way; I haven't had all the prerequisites."

you've done a wonderful job of thoroughly addressing the absolute, number one least sexy aspect of music-making in a way that is informative, well-paced & even engaging. I commend you & am grateful for your efforts, good doctor nim.

People are talking it up at Cannes, but so much of that is really who you know.

You're welcome! I appreciate the kind feedback🙏🏼! I'm just about to upload a related short - a midi hack that I wish I'd put in the video (but I came up with it from making the video😀).

Thank you very much for the support🙏🏼! After this one I think I'll do a couple of shorter uploads, so should be another one soon. I finally was able to find a Korg NTS-2, arrived yesterday. I think I may do a video about building and using that next🤔. Thanks again!

Another great video Dr. Nim! You took a (seemingly) dull topic and made it interesting, insightful, and inspiring. Thanks again!

This is epic! I have been following you for a few years and have collected a bunch of small synths too, and my biggest barrier is getting them to talk and listen to each other. It almost made me wish I had gone modular in the first place so patching was easy. This is a much needed tutorial for the interwebs! By the way, Android sucks for any USB interface, or I should say is awfully inconsistent. I have a Google 6 pro and Koala Sample had such an interface lag that its not useable. Also, I have lost hours of my night trying to get older midi controllers to work with an ipad - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. WTF? So I am glad to hear I am not the only one.

Yeah, sometimes the stuff seems very brittle and occasionally kind of random. I'm always pleasantly surprised when something works. Best of luck with yours! Thanks very much for the feedback and for following the channel since early on. It means a lot🙏🏼!
