Uf you are the defender in a field battle you can deploy defensive sheild screen which creates a line of barricades in front of your archers which can reduce the amount of enemy arrows hitting your units. Also it forces melee units to go around

I tend to do a semi-historical army, samurai ashigarui ratio by like 1:3. three Ashigaru, 1 samurai.

Chad yari ashigaru

This is cool and all, but I play on legendary. I have 17 provinces by the time i had cavalry sent to my 4 armies. Ashigaru is all you need. 6 bows and 13 yari ashigaru You can afford 2 entire armies for the price of one of yours. The price/upkeep and training times are the biggest issues when creating an army. Not the specific unit composition. But I guess this is good to use in multiplayer I have 4 armies with the lowest experienced units being rank 5 and 17 provinces making 8347 gold per turn after expenses by turn 27. I'm about to win the game...... So yeah go ahead and waste an extra 30 turns trying to create the perfect army. I will be done and have won already. I recruited 97 yari ashigaru so far. I just have them everywhere, plus very high taxes.

Question: do trees help to block arrow fire? It seems logical that they would, but you never know....

If you want tankier general, Rise of The Samurai is pretty good. All generals being bow cav and the lack of Yari Ashigaru make them feel stronger, and I think the skill-tree is more balanced so leveling up general's units is more viable. For better and worse though, the AI generals are pretty passive. On one hand you don't need to get kited by horse archers in every fight, but on the other hand it's a little disappointing when they got so easily caught by infantry

Also, you should invest honor skills for your daimyo general because it not only boost the loyalty of other generals under you also it gives 2 honor attributes to your town castles meaning lower level of rebellions and unhappiness. These positive honors also can be earned from tribute to shogun or positive events. Also Depends on how many dishonorable attributes you have, these positive honor attributes will cancel those dishonorable ones. If your general earns retainer attributes and you don't like either of them, you can reload from a turn before and have your general earned the level up again; it will give your general different retainer attributes.

Mrsmartdonkey did a more throughly how to play as tokugawa. Yours is too hasty and has a few flaws.

What's best to build an army with though ? samurai sword guys or guys with the long polls ?. I have 2 x extreme brain damage so i am not the smartest tool in the shed. Notice the Bodyguards Balloon back are called "Horos", Historians say that it protects wearers back from arrows. Is it true in this game when face away from Bows whilst dismounted?

Archers are not very good early on. AI has bonus to accuracy and will spam archers, outshooting you.

Tried them as reserve forces for a shimazu katana or a date nodachi focused army Yari samurai are a perfect complement because can chase down enemy cavalry and generals looking to kill my range units Meanwhile, my own yari cavalry can be busy with other enemy units

best castle defend strategy is dont repair your castle gate after you take control the province the ai will keep sent cannon fodder to province with broked castle gate even change direction daimyo army to that province just put yari wall on broken open gate with bow ashigaharu on top of the gate sent 3 raid squad to kyushu / shikoku island or honma island of 12 unit yari ashigaharu to accupy empty castle exacly before realm divide and dont repair the castle gate

why you not just keep moving 1 yari ashigaharu and metsuke on imagawa territory and ask them to join war eventually they will declare war on you instead

archers. i won the ENTIER map with 3 companies of polemen. And 10 companies of archers. DONE. I put my polemen 2 men deep, and a long line, making a U protection around my archers. ANd lumped my archers in the tighest group i could. And that is all it took. I took the entire map. seiges were easy. So many arrows, that i could kill EVERYONE in the castles.

You forgot this, if you sent an army without a General to battle & won, there is an event chance that 1 of its unit can become a General that cost 1000

I never recruit these guys. Rather spam more yari ashigaru or build ranges to recruit samurai. Unlike melee variants, bow samurai is unquestionably better than bow ashigaru. Use gun ashigaru instead

So when's the Ninja Unit for Battlefields?

Definitely the more fun army composition. But somehow my armies tend to just end up being 16 - 19 yari ashigaru every time...

This is the downside if your a Rome 2 Veteran because Shogun 2's Generals always field the same 30 man Bodyguards,were far more fragile & must always stay out of combat whilst in Rome 2, each has their own in each of every faction either Cavalry or a Heavy infantry. Plus in Rome 2 disbanding a General sends them home whilst Shogun's they commit seppuku permanently removes them

Idk why but i see the general having some sort of unique splash attack that affects everybody. Compared to other cavalry, the general can be awesome in bottlenecks like a bridge. i ve recently got 300 kills in a single charge for no reason lol.

Does this archer bait tactic not work anymore? Cause I keep trying to do it, ashigaru starting to get fired at and then just backing a little bit back, but then when i try and take my archers around all the enemy archers start moving too
