I actually get my generals to dismount and join the battle as stronger katana-samurai. With a total of 80 of them on foot, you have a strong katana-samurai group to hold one (or both) of the flanks of your yari ashigaru. Generals only tend to die in combat once their bodyguard go down to below 20 members or so. They are squishy on horseback, but are remarkably tanky when on foot. They definitely carry their own weight in combat unless the enemy has activated yari wall formation (if they do, then the generals do even better by flanking them). The big benefit to this is twofold. The first benefit:Since you are not interested in chasing down the enemy (so you can farm exp from them a second time after they retreat on the campaign map and you fight them again), you don't need the generals to be on horseback, so you can just use them as katana samurai. Hopefully you might save the lives of your yari ashigaru by providing a bit of reinforcement on the melee line (especially if the generals get a good flank). The second, and arguably biggest benefit to doing this, is generals who fight in battle have a chance of gaining the "Brave" trait. This trait gives +1 morale to all troops that the general commands. Picking it up in the early game is a strong bonus. It's also really nice for roleplaying. I have beaten the game on legendary multiple times, and the most interesting campaigns I've had were the ones where my daimyo was on foot, fighting alongside his troops with all the combat perks.
That is indeed an excellent suggestion! Normally the generals get a bit more flanking to do than what happened in this case, since the hill gave a huge advantage. I prioritize losing as few men as possible in the early fights, so I want to break the as quick as possible. I generally also leave one enemy unit relatively unscathed, so I only have to fight one unit in the next battle, but I'll chase down the other units to make sure the next battle is as easy as possible. The brave trait is something I haven't really considered. Definitely a useful trait early game!
The first few round are the most important ones. I bring only the daim+yari sam and the general for the first fight. The odds are against you and you can win the battle under 30 man loss. Its makes you a Heroic victory. The yari cav and some other man always run away so you can chase them and get the lvl2 for the daim. Pick the +1 honor for the lvl up. Go siege the Ogi castle, if you playing the Hojo as in the video. With only the Daim yari sam, yari as and the other general the odds ar again, against you and you can win it with Heroic victory again. Now only its 2 or 3rd round depends on wich clan do you play and you can get a 6 Honor daim wich makes a huge benefit on all of your castle. Your welcome.
Good tutorial, I'm too lazy to try luring them so instead of wasting time i just build up my army in my castle, i found out that in a few turns they will eventually siege you so i usually wait for them to come so i can wipe then out all in a single swoop. They will probably raid your production facilities if they have access to them but it's generally negligible in early game.
I always want to get the fight out of the way as soon as possible, since it'll generally allow me to capture my first province in a few turns after. I want to build early momentum, but that can of course also turn into overextending. So a bit more of a reserved approach can also work!
Good video. It took me a while to master these first battles (normally play Hattori) never noticed the AI were boosted with archers so much I just realised what worked was making the archers inactive. To absolutely demolish them it's worth looking at exactly how they're coming towards you. If they're rushing forward with Bow and Samurai Retainers first a double charge with generals will take them out of action for long enough for you to get the Yari on top of them. Little differences are needed otherwise. So even with identical armies have to bare in mind no 2 battles are the same.
So I had this brainwave, maybe some of the bigger authorities in the Shogun 2 scene (you and some other youtubers, high ranked players, etc) could come together and do a player-made balance patch to the game? This is happening to starcraft 2, another game I play that the devs stopped working on. 1 youtuber would put up a video detailing his own ideas for a balance patch, then another would react to it and add his own thing, rinse and repeat. Not game-breaking stuff maybe, but obvious stuff that anyone'd agree to like buff some of the weak units and clans. I figure then everyone would vote on that, then some tech-savvy players make a mod for the game. Then we make a petition for CA to apply that to multiplayer as well. What do you guys think?
It's definitely a cool idea, I'll have to bounce it around to see if that is possible. First I'll have to focus on getting my channel back in order though and stabilize. ;)
I love your contents and your guides! Something I always do is after the first battle, disband my yari sameri. So knowing they are going to be deleted. I charge them head first into the Ai them up (Inspired by my general). Followed by my archers to rain down arrows while the enemy is grouped up. Using ym Ashugaru to get into a good flanking position. Once my Yair Sameri are near death I send in the rest of my army with good flanking postion to mop up the weakened Ai. My general chases down any of those that route. Leaving one unit in tact to attack again and farm general experince.
Hi, i have a question, how do you play those simulated battles where you put 1 unit versus another, for testing purposes, i can't find any mod or any option to allow me to control both armies in shogun 2.
I have 60 hours of experience and I've beat rise of the shogun in 6 days and I've beat the shogun in 2 days because logically I play recruit difficulty. So legendary would kill me.
This is a great strategy but it can be improved. As soon as the AI archers are routed they will launch a full charge at you, which is why I always try to first lure one unit of ashigaru first, this is more effective but it doesn't always work. If you can try to go on the flank with one general to lure their archers, and use another general to lure a yari unit, then you can just wait until that yari unit is out of position and kill them with your yari wall/yari samurai and a charge in the rear with the general. They will rout instantly. Then you can go for the archers. I even managed to lure out their yari cav before and it got demolished by my yari samurai with rapid advance! Super effective! I usually win the first battle with less than 30 losses, let some of them live so you can auto resolve the second one and get a lvl2 general turn one.
Actually you don't have to use your general. Just use your ashigaru. Problem with cavalry is that their walk speed is faster then foot units and once you reach a certain distance wthout microing, the archers will fall back. Since yari ashi move around the same speed as bows just walking the other direction as soon as the bows stop to take aim will force them to move at a pace and distance where they will keep trying to tail the yari ashi. Less micro intesive then the generals. The only time you may need to switch to a running pace for your yari ashi is when they start climbing the hill where the rest of your troops are.
You finally remember your computer password. Welcome back man.
Haha, glad to be back :)

unmounted general still has status as horsemen
And he's back! Good to see ya
Yeah, it took a little while, hopefully I'll be able to continue!
nice to have you back :D
Happy to be back! :)
I just find out your videos last night.
I know im new but Welcome back man
Haha, no problem, welcome to the fold and thank you for your kind words! :)

Really great guides my dude. Succinct and targeted to relevant mechanics and themes. Wish I had these 10 years ago 😢

I actually played this match up a lot back then as the "AI" because how the drop in battle is enabled by default. Killed many great lords lol
He has returned!
I don't think I'll ever be able to permanently leave you guys ;)
Weird, I didn't think the AI got combat buffs on Legendary
In my experience, it mostly seems to affect the enemy archers reload speed. It almost seems to double their firing rate on VH/L difficulty.

It's easy, always use a ton of archers at sieges
And when we needed him the most, he came back for us...
Haha, I don't think it's that dramatic :P But I'm glad to be back :)
HES BACK

Their men are running from the battlefield, SHAMEFU DISPLAY!

Easily
It's pretty easy, it just takes a bit of time :P
this video makes no sense. if you needed this video, dont play on legendary
