Once during my Mori campaign I was holding a bridge with only a handful of troops against a much larger enemy stack. But when they attacked, for some reason they didn’t want to cross the bridge so I ended up winning 3 heroic victories by running out the battle timer.
Battle timer should be ALWAYS activated to 60 min due to AI bugging out sometimes and dont want to engage even if they are agresor. Some super hard battles cant be won without bridge defences or castle walls.
Also, the bridge can be destroyed by artillery, potentially killing a few hundreds in an instant while trapping everyone who already crossed! (also works on vanilla Shogun 2, but good luck actually hitting the bridge with mangonels and smoothbore cannons)
One thing that I did was blasting the bridge with Fire Rockets as soon as the majority of the enemy troops crossing the bridge. What I never realized that the bridge actually can be destroyed. Massive explosion of men ensued.
@@TheVikingGeneral From my memory, yes. It's a pretty recent battle that I had with my gunpowder only challenge. Maybe not enough firepower? I'm playing with 3x unit size mod. I have 5 Fire Rockets per stack. So.... 600 rockets per salvo

Hello everyone, since it's taking a while to get produce the video about the matchlocks unit, I made a quick extra video to make sure you guys have at least something to enjoy in the meantime! I'm going to be quite busy the coming days, but I'll try to squeeze in some time to work on the matchlock video.
I'll admit I'm curious as to how matchlocks work other than bypassing armor. The morale effect isn't clear so I'm hoping you clear the smoke a bit. No pressure (maybe a little).
I hope you realize just how much I appreciate your information videos It's everything I love about an info gaming vid Cut down parts to be concentrated on,not to mention concise and to the point. Another comment for the algorithm feed!
Bridge battles are unfortunatly not so cool in Shogun 2 as in previous titles, the AI never focuses on the choke points, be it attacker or defender :( Excellent video my mate!
Thank you! Yeah, the AI does seem to have some issues with these battles, but sometimes it's really fun if you have fire bomb throwers or fire rockets.
Last time, I try to use Yari Ashigaru pike wall with V-Formation or sometimes box formation near the bridge during defense with Bow unit used to reduce the enemy numbers, Matchlocks unit used as cleaner or damage dealer (only when in box formation as I put them behind the Yari although it was a risky move). Well it works well tho.
Has always worked for me over the years. The AI doesn't care when I run a few units of cavalry across the shallows to hit them from behind when they're already committed to the bridge. Very little response and often none at all.
you can bring matchlock units and have your army takes the defense deployment, bamboo walls and wooden shields will be even more deadly once they block the bridge. Also, be aware that AI's cavalry units would tend to flank you if the map got other shortcuts, but like you said it can also be your chance to spare some units and surround enemies on bridge
Damn, you made me want to do bridges battles again man. I remember the time when my fire projecting mangonel shoot the bridges while my unit and enemy unit is charging at each other. Just before both of the unit made contact to engage in combat one of the artilerry shell blow up on the bridges, making casualities on both sides.
Just 2 days ago i did a bridge battle as tokugawa with some kisho ninjas in my army.i closed off the bridge and created the bottleneck and then sent my kisho ninjas to throw some bombs in the blob....apart from getting a shitload of kills they actually destroyed the bridge killing their entire bottlenecked army on the bridge and trapping the remnants on my side of the river.it was a massacre.noone escaped.not one soldier.i didnt even know i could destroy the bridge
When the enemy troops get bogged down on the bridge it becomes pure slaughter, though a very extreme case, it reminds me of a fots battle I had where my artillery with shrapnel shot just evaporated a couple of the enemy's infantry units on the bridge. Very good strategy to use on any of the shogun 2 campaigns. Completely unrelated, do you plan on making a unit guide for european cannons?
@@TheVikingGeneral yeah, after using them for a while on my current otomo playthrough I was disappointed to find out that on field battles they are pretty useless due to their low accuracy, while in sieges on higher than 2 level castles they're also pretty useless due to their impossibly low ammo and the toughness of the walls, not to mention that you need to be lucky with terrain in order to even hope to use them. Disappointing, the only reason to become Christian is the nanban ships, which is kind of an overkill since flaming arrows can do the job just fine.
@@TheVikingGeneral Siege units need major reworking to become viable. For instance make Mangonels slightly more accurate. European cannons projectiles should have a Inceased Collision Radius so they can punch a slightly larger hole in formations also the bouncing rounds should be producing possibly-injuring pebbles everytime it bounces so if it bounces infront or in a formation then it should have an area of effect which causes units to get staggered
Ahh yes, this scenario were my finest battle. A suggestion: Force the enemy attack. Lots of bow put the enemy in defense until you approach? Be the defender force the enemy to attacks? I saw old videos about "bait" guides and Bow Ratio + Attacking/Ambush are the decisive factor to prevent the movement of an army, but the bug gets patched and I have problems with the enemy attacking my defended position. Thanks.
Honestly, I don't know. This battle is from a campaign, since I couldn't find any bridge map either the steam work shop or just the standard maps for custom battles.
