Mercedes Control Arm replacement - MEYLE HD Upgrade (W205/W213/A238/C238)
In this video I replace the rear of the two lower suspension arms on the front suspension; in Mercedes speak it is called Rear Spring Control Arm. This video is applicable to all AIRMATIC (air suspension) cars. For non AIRMATIC equipped cars the design of the conventional shock absorber means the lower join and the anti roll (sway) bar drop link is slightly different but the method of change is exactly the same.
I replaced it having realised that the joints were worn when replacing other suspension components, however, it was noticeable that the steering input was a little vague with a degree of free play between turning the steering wheel and the wheels turning. It is widely reported that...

Can I confirm, have you disconnected the wiper sensor and plugged the camera in instead? Is the intention to eventually plug the wiper sensor back in when you sell the car and disconnect the camera? I wonder if this will work for an A35
Not quite! The connection for the camera plugs into the wiper connection to get power and then the other end of the coupling plugs into the wiper (in other words it splits the connection but allows the wiper to work normally). Hopefully that makes sense?
@@mercedes_and_more this makes sense. Thank you for clarifying
Did you had clucking noise on steering wheel, when ypu are in place parked turning left/right ??
@@defacto8408 a little bit, but I’ve always had that since new! Decision to replace was based on the state of the joints when I was replacing the sway bar/anti roll bar drop links.

@@mercedes_and_moresounds good, thanks for your response. Making it easier for us mercedes owners 🙏
Hello, at around 1:20 you start by opening up the console and removing the 2 rubber buttons. On my 2019 C300, I don’t have those rubber buttons. Any advice to get past that first step? Thx in advance!
🤔🤔🤔 not sure. I thought that the C class would be exactly the same. Maybe another C class owner can add comment?
The correct amount of oil is 6.3l for this engine. The oil filter housing takes 300ml. You'll be right at the MAX line perfectly. I personaly add the 229.52 mercedes oil which is approved for the OM654. Otherwhise great demonstration. Cheers!!
Hi, if I use the central jacking point as you did, do I lift the car by engine or by chasis? I mean, is it connected to the chasis? Thanks.
It is basically part of the subframe bolted to the front chassis. I think the engine might be connected to this subframe but basically you are jacking the chassis not the engine 👍👍
Hi, thanks for the video. Do you know if the 2 caliper bolts need to be replaced as well? I remember when I was working on the rear brakes, one of the bolts broke while tightening on 60nm, I would like to avoid this happens while applying 120nm. And the last question, I just got new ATE rotors, they came with a plastic yellow little screw that mounts the rotor to the bearing, I believe I should not be worried that the screw is plastic? Thanks for help.
Caliper bolts do not need to be renewed, just cleaned and new thread locker. I now have ATE discs and the plastic screw is very robust so don’t worry 👍👍
Thanks for your reply, very appreciated. I remember having read that on the little screw a thread lock should be aslo applied and was just wondering when I saw that plastic screw.., normally we do not apply a thread lock on plastic screws, if I am not wrong.
Hi l, I have just completed the job, all fine. I have been still thinking about the yellow plastic screw. The brakes do have to be resistant to high temperatures, just wondering if the plastic screw would not melt. What do you think? I woud feel better with the original or any metal screw if it fits. Worth to investigate maybe?
@DODIKUA it won’t melt. Trust me it’s a 100% solution 👌
By the way how do you lift the rear of the car in order to place stands? There is no central lifting point I believe.
I'm so excited, I followed your instructions exactly, and it worked perfectly. The "SERVICE REQUIRED" message had been showing since the day I serviced my 2019 Discovery Sport. I even took it back to the garage, but they couldn't fix it. However, the issue was resolved in less than 30 seconds after I followed your advice. Thank you so much

Great video but Mercedes get a thumbs down for this, poor design.
To be fair though, it’s no worse than alot of cars these days 😵💫😵💫
What Brand brake disc are they ?
The brake discs fitted to my car are ATE. (Expensive) experience tells me they are the best!
Nice tutorial! Are there any tips on removing caliper bolts? Since they are in the back and tightened with high torque. Thanks
You could turn the wheel for better access (assuming you have both off the ground. Personally i use a spanner and a “gentle” tap of a hammer if i can’t fit a breaker bar in
@@mercedes_and_more Many thanks
Well done man! Thanks for torque values! Looking forward for your next videos
Great video. Great explanations.
Not quite sure what you mean by the system? Normally i use a brush (wearing a mask) to clean calipers, brush on a drill to clean high face. Brake cleaner at the end to ensure nothing left. Does that help?
Don't forget to tighten the little screw on the brake rotor ;-)
Yes it’s 15nm
Sehr informatives video. Eine frage habe ich noch. Kommt kein fett zwichen Radnabe und bremsscheibe?
Kein fett und 100% sauber. Kein rost - wei neu
On my w212 I used to do intermediate oil changes at 5000 miles just sucking out 5l via dipstick tube and replacing not doing filter... This car is now at 400k miles and running sweet. I bought the W213 and wanted to do the same but no dipstick, this car seems terribly designed to do anything compared to the W212. And can I trust an electronic gauge. I would not buy another one of these cars, very nice interior but terrible design and expensive to fix anything.
We all have own opinion but in terms of design the OM654 is state of the art (it cost over €1bn to engineer!). To me not replacing a €10/$10 filter when going to the “expense” of changing the oil is a false economy? Although early cars had issues with camshaft rockers (fixed in 2018), this engine will achieve similar mileages without issue if maintained.
Dude the W211 before yours W212 dont have a dipstick...my w211 270 cdi is from 2006 and no dispstick
@@Tony-fh2wi well my W212 has a dipstick or did I imagine the whole process of sucking out oil through it , my W213 doesn't
@@mercedes_and_more The service interval on my W213 OM654 is about 16000 miles, I don't trust oil to last that long, but the filter yes... Putting 5 liters in every 5000 miles and changing filter at 15000 did very well on my W212, well actually its an S212 estate.
How do you replace the steering rack on a w205 c43 amg?
Sadly i can’t help you with this. I suspect you’ll have to drop the front sub frame to remove the rack
As an update, the Brembo discs for this car now come dimpled rather than perforated. So don't be alarmed when you get them out of the box and think there's a fault or you've got the wrong discs! Apparently dimpled is superior to fully perforated. There's a few videos here explaining why. Tbh I doubt either make much difference on road cars for everyday driving anyway.
Well the ones i fitted in the video lasted 10k miles and warped taking the wheel bearings with them! Since swapped to ATE with ATE ceramic pads. 99% eliminated and steering wobble under braking.
Hey what was the symptoms ? Noises when driving ? How did you know they where worn : thanks
I had knocking noise going over bumps. Having replaced them then that’s mostly gone but as we saw in the video the joints in the control arm are worn. These will be replaced soon and hopefully that will solve all problems. I also have knocking at the rear and will be replacing those links aswell.
Was it only in one side? I also have a knocking noise. Trying I changed the lower control arms. Ball joints were gone. I’ll order the end links
Mainly on the left but the right link was most worn. I think that is because i went into a very big pot hole in the UK a while back. It was apparent that the lower arms are worn when i did the link so will replace those. I have ordered and received the parts and will do the job next week as i have a wheel alignment booked. Video to follow hopefully by the end of the week
@mercedes_and_more Thanks for a speedy reply, I have found them on ebay but they are attached to the whole centre console, I'll keep looking.
Great video, I have an A238 and just like you my touchpad is cracked in 2 places, the crack just appeared out of nowhere, where did you buy your replacement touchpad from and how much for, I would like to change mine too, it’s annoying me.
I bought mine used on eBay and it was about €100. Currently they are about that for a half decent one. I have recently seen them new on AliExpress for about €75. Also not that whilst I’m sure that one from a C Class might work, the symbols are different. Personally i didn’t risk it and waited for a used E class one
Hey! Great video, i got a Mercedes-Benz C 220 T CDI from 2012, that i assume i will need to change bearings on. But i have a question regarding the spinning on your wheel at the end of the video, it seems that your wheel isnt spinning as freely as im used to, (regarding other brands that is). The thing is, today i changed to my summertires and i noticed that when i spun the plates (after removing the wheel/tire), the plats spun very slow and had quite the resistence, so when i got the summerwheels on i tried again and i noticed that even with the wheels on, the tire spun, but with some restistence. Is this normal? Since my last car, a BWM, those front wheels spun like crazy just by hand when the car was lifted. I have rearwheeldrive and this is the front wheels that spin with restistence. (Also no heat or other issues when driving.)
Can be brake dependent. They do certainly sing freely so maybe it was just how it came across in the video?
Tks so much for this. Just had rhe car serviced, at 160k it's a 2008 c class and the light went off but it's bk a day later. It's saying full service cannot be completed. It's showing workshop code 606. Any idea what this is please?
Sorry I don’t know 100% but think it is a B service plus pollen filter. If the car was serviced then the garage should have reset the light. Maybe need to confirm the work and then reset. If it’s a 2008 c class then i think to get the service menu you press the reset button on the outside of the speedo 3 times in quick succession with the ignition (1 turn of the key) switched on. That’s what I did on my same generation SLK and ML class cars
@@mercedes_and_more thank you so much. Appreciate the reply.
Hey guys - trying to do some good Karma here. You’ll find on eBay some Chinese replacement parts for the topmost glass section only. The replacement is plastic. You CAN successfully only change that part. You’ll need a Number 9 torx as well. Reference the video “How to replace the center mouse handwriting touchpad of Mercedes” by BettyLin. You’ll need to use a hairdryer or a heat gun and eventually pry the topmost piece from the correct location. Best of luck, hopefully I can save someone some cash. Reply if you need help in the future boys. Mine was cracked very badly when I bought my Benz. Now it’s perfect, I’ve just replaced it. Huge monkey off my back!
Yes i have seen that in AliExpress you can now get replacement screens: you can now even get complete units for about €50. Whist i agree with all that you have said, it sounds like an awful lot of work rather than plug and play the original, especially with the new units being so relatively inexpensive?
@@mercedes_and_more Stateside I was looking at a minimum of $110-$200 for a clean unit with shipping and taxes, Aliexpress I did not see any complete units unfortunately that would have been easier - a link to that would be helpful for future viewers I only share my anecdotes to help, your video is heaps and bounds more helpful. I’ve honestly watched it multiple times over. I just happened to go about it in a different direction and thought it was nearly impossible and that I had wasted $50 on a chinesium piece of copied plastic, on my first impression. Turns out I now have a good unit! Cheers mate thank you for having such a well produced video

Well done. Thanks from Down under. Looking forward to your next vid about the rear control arms.

It meets the required specification laid down by Mercedes. I am paying for the oil not the brand marketing
@@mercedes_and_more It would not be worth filling my engine with such a no-name oil. No values for viscosity standards. But it's your car, you can put anything in it!

Can’t really comment as i will have written the part number down from the box. That said, i find these brakes were terrible and they worried after 10k km. I replaced them with ATE and have had no issues 40k km later👍

@@mercedes_and_more so those ATE rotors you bought and ATE ceramic pads is the way to go? Is ceramic pads compatible with non ceramic rotors 🤔 You need the same brand on rotors and pads?
@@brunodrakenas9575 ceramic pads are compatible with any brand of discs but their composition means they produce about 90% less dust. Don’t confuse with hyper expensive ceramic carbon disc 😳. The only downfall with ceramic pads is that they can seem to have lees bite (according to the marketing blurb) but honestly I couldn’t tell the difference but am generally quite light in my brakes (well before this car anyway)!
