I have driven a Tesla model S and have been hooked since - incredible acceleration, great handling, tons of gadgets what's not to like with this car except the price. As any other EVs did not excite me as much I have decided to do my own EV conversion. Also, I believe that electric cars are too expensive and therefore I would like to experiment and create an EV conversion on a budget. Since electronics has been one of my hobbies for some time and I love cars this was a great opportunity to combine those two passions into one. Follow me on my journey to create my own EV conversion!

I’ve successfully made a Tesla motor spin using an Open Inverter board. Now, I’m working on my own variant with some improvements. One of the key changes is the introduction of a new ESP 32 WiFi module. I faced some challenges getting it to work, so I decided to create this tutorial to help others who might encounter similar issues. In my current design, I’m using an ESP32 Wroom module and inte...

NIO and CATL Hybrid Batteries - What are the Benefits?
Hi, what throttle pedal are you using? Thanks
@@BenBeyond2003 It's a Prius pedal
Power resistors are typically of wire wound construction and can fail like a fuse if overloaded. For testing purposes, an incandescent lightbulb makes for a useful precharge resistor. It has the advantage of lighting briefly to show the precharge is occurring, plus acting like a crude constant current source and also as fault indicator. If it remains lit, you have a precharge fault.
@@EVguru Thanks good to know, I just not expected resistor to fail. I usually use a light bulb for the first test but I didn't film it this time
It was my understanding the tesla motors/inverters can be controlled with just canbus messages. Is that what the board does, just send canbus msgs?
No, this board replaces the Tesla control board inside the inverter and controls the power stage by itself. The board uses Open inverter program designed by Johannes Hubner to control the Tesla power electronics
@@LatutaEV ok, but is that actually necessary? Can't you just use canbus to control it?
@murraymadness4674 Yes potentially it can be done but it's not as simple as it sounds. I believe Tesla encrypted some of their Comms but I have never tried. The second factor is that Tesla updates the firmware on those boards frequently. If someone gets a newer motor then previously determined protocol may not work. And the third factor for me it was more interesting to learn how the inverter works in this way 😉
First person I see that has also come up with a hybrid battery design idea, have you tried it yet?
No unfortunately not.😔
@@LatutaEV When I get out of the dipshit of the divorce that I'm in, Ill try it for sure, make basic EV with LTO, and then if needed, one can add a dense battery, I'm sure some city folk would do just fine with like 10km of range from only LTO cells
Eddie you are really coming into your own when making these amazing videos, more please !
Thank you you are very kind.
Sure will do more although my other viewers don't find this one that interesting 🤔
This is so COOL! Thanks for sharing
Thank you Daisy 😁
Ah, so the issue you faced with your original openinverter board - some components in the power supply having the wrong polarity- that was an issue with JCLPCB and the CAD program you used?
A bit of both It's JLC PCB software has a problem with Kicad rotation. Now I know and check it all the time 😁
Houston, brother. 😎😎
Oh sorry I missed that bit 😔
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
lets go)
Oh yeah 😂
I had the exact same issue before. It turned out I accidentally bumped the knob on my power supply and reduced the max amps allowed. Since a 5A fuse is recommended for these boards, could it be you might just need to bump up the max amps a bit?
Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried it already. Usually the board consumes less then 2 amps. I have increased the power limit up to 2 amps and its still a problem. I want to be cautious and remove the inverter to check it separately.
You know what you were right. I tried to increase the current limit further up to 3 amps and it worked well, so I didn't increase the current limit far enough when I tried it the first time. Your comment made me rethink it, thank you very much. This saved me from opening the inverter 😅.
Nice! I'm so glad to have helped. When it happened to me, I also got very worried and thought I damaged the board somehow. After about 15 mins of checking various components and connections I figured it out and was very much relieved. Thx for all your videos! They are very insightful and I have learned a lot from them.
I am glad you found my videos useful and thanks for your suggestion as well. That saved me a lot of time messing about with opening inverter.
Quick question while wiring my board with Damian's diagram it shows power to various pins like brake, ignition, board (13) etc do these all get direct power supply from 12v or does pin 13 power them internally?
Yes they do get power from the 12 V supply. While ignition and brake are just switches the throttle pedal does get power from the board.
@@propsmear the accelerator and brake each have 3 wires (+5V, GND, Signal). Do NOT supply separate voltage to these, the board will supply the +5V. You need to connect them to the corresponding 3 wires on your pedals.
@@propsmear ignition, start, forward, and reverse are all separate +12V inputs.
Amazing work!
Thank you 😊
You don't need to tin the pads before using solder paste. The paste goes directly on the board and then the component.
I have seen laptop repair people doing it. The idea is when the board was manufactured which in my case few months ago it had HASL done. This inevitably would be oxidised and have some other impurities. The tining of the pads will get refreshed surface. But it might be not critical and waste of time so I will try with it next time
Keep making videos
Sure already working on the next one 😉. How's your project going?
Whats the difference between your board and say a zombie vcu or a board for sale at the openinverter website
I have a project I would like to do building a big truck with tesla drive train but it seems like such a daunting challenge since I am an electronics novice.
You can purchase ready made controllers to control Tesla motor. If you are in the US there are a number of companies selling this type of products.
All hail the algorithm!
Oh yeah 😂
I want to build a truck combining the prius drivetrain with a tesla drivetrain and battery. I wonder if it is possible.
I think it is possible but I would not recommend this. Prius gearbox is quite low power and may not be viable in a truck as it won't make much of a difference
Hi, appreciate your videos. Please keep the original copyright notice when making a variant of the board though.
Specially since you leaned heavily on the base board and are using the Open Inverter videos.
Thank you Johannes for appreciation of my videos it's an honour. Yes of course I will.
Is this just your own version of the OpenInverter V8 SDU board ( which also has the ESP32 ) or did you add extra features?
I made some other minor improvements but no new features at this stage
@@LatutaEV What did you improve and where are your design files? Also why no mention in the video of this?
@Tom-evnut Hey Tom great to hear from you. I am going through some testing and will share the design files once I know it is working 🙂
Thankyou for this video, and thankyou for describing how the ESP module connects to the computer. I've been afraid of using modules up to this point for that reason, so now I'm going to give it a go! :)
I am glad you found this useful. Check my other video about ESP32 programming it may be useful for you too
👍🌟👍
Thank you 👍
You need to download JLCPCB Tools plugin to solve those manufacturing problems.
Ed love your work, I'll email for a tested populated board or two. It would be great if some of the extra Zombie features are in this board, so one does not need to buy an additional Zombie, maybe a smaller board with I/O for pwm, heater, coolant pumps, etc...
Thank you Don very much appreciated 😊
great video , I'm really looking forward to your project :)
Thank you, will do more soon 🙂
Sir, its awesome)

Rowan used a set of ice parameters to judge the future value of an EV. History of used cars both ice and early EVs, indicates EVs with 300-400km range will be sought after for those seeking a safe and economical vehicle. Why did Rowan not consider the future of EVs from the perspective (needs and budgets) of the average family ie low running costs if charging at home, vehicle to load, lower CoG and structural battery makes it more crash worthy, lower incident rate of fire, nil gas or noise pollution into the street, ability to park and leave unattended with climate control active, smoother quieter ride.. none of these features are effected by a battery with 70% charge. Why didn’t Rowan see these features as being valuable to a household looking for a 10 year old vehicle?
You nailed it, your comment is spot on. I think Rowan is biased, if you have Aston Martin and McLaren in your garage you are not particularly thinking about family looking for a 10 year old vehicle, right.
Darla's channel on RUclips he changed the inverter on his Leaf. If there was an easier way to modify the inverter he would have done it.
@@antonkorzh3811 Вот Линк по видео он делал ruclips.net/video/VGBA8VPWwIg/видео.htmlsi=dLfH5G5ezF3LSJfH
Think about it. Fork lift wieght remove then balance the base and ratio or wheel drive system. Bam. Fast vehicle.
Yes sounds good but one needs a gearbox to balance the ratio to wheels while Tesla motor has this already included plus inverter
Fyi tesla original design off a electric forklift pre existing model. Look up power train set up and compare.
Do you know which model of a forklift?
Can a 60v 5amp power supply be used for the initial test HV first run or does the amperage need to be higher?
@@statzietech it was Jlc PCB I have found their software often not interpret the rotation of the components. I actually check but I am guessing not well 😞
There's one thing I don't get (I'm probably missing something eheh). A switching power supply, like the ones used to power LEDs or other kind of electrical devices (I'm referring to the ones with a 12V output which usually can be adjusted +/- 2V) are able to work with DC as well, considering the first stage is usually a full bridge rectifier which takes 120V~/230V~ and convert it to like 300V dc internally and then uses a buck or flyback converter to pull it down to 12V. Shouldn't a simple power supply like that be ok for this purpose or the DC-DC converter from the Prius has some other features that I don't know about? Sorry if the question is stupid. BTW great job. Love this channel. Keep up the good works and greetings from Italy.
Thank you for your support. Are you referring to four power suppliers joined together? Those are to emulate the high voltage all together 120V. I don't have battery providing high voltage at the moment so use those instead
@@LatutaEV No, I probably wasn't clear enough, I'm sorry. I was asking why, instead of a DC-DC converter from a Prius, a simple switching power supply isn't suitable to convert the high voltage from the main vehicle battery to the 12V needed for the auxiliary services. Sorry If I couldn't explain it better in my previous comment. 😅😅
@@BC107BP yes sorry I misunderstood you. When I will have a proper battery I will have to convert 360 to 400 volts to 14 volts. Not many DC to DC converters can do that. Actually the Prius could only do about 240 and will require further modification of the control circuit.
production quality is much better 🙏🏼
