This is unexpected progress I watched your Prius inverter videos. You spent lots of time and money getting those Toyota parts working and now aren't going to use them at all. Your videos about those toyota stuff are great: short, clear and can be used as instructions to repeat the process.
Thank you for following the channel. I am not giving up on the Toyota parts. In fact I am planing to use the Prius inverter to do some testing with the ZombieVerter VCU. . The Tesla motor price was so good I could not resist and bought it. At least good news you could now expect more videos on Tesla Small Drive Unit. 😀
Love you channel and follow your experience closely. I couldn’t help but reel back when you said that you were considering a front wheel drive donor. I have a project in mind using a Tesla model S small drive unit and have come up with a few good rear wheel drive donor cars that you may or may not have considered. The best option would be the car with the heaviest drivetrain that would be discarded. Here is my list, Toyota MR2, Lotus Elise, Anything with Semi trailing arm rear suspension eg BMW Z3, E28, E30, Peugeot 504 coupe, Porsche 924, 944 or 928, Mercedes C123 or W123, Rolls Royce, VW Beetle and Karmann Ghia. Another wild card option would be a Toyota RAV 4 Mk1 (XA10) short wheel base (lowered for performance). Even though you may think it is a joke, the Toyota has a lot of space behind the back axle for the Tesla drive unit and the Toyota iron block engine and 4wd system is quite heavy allowing for a large amount of batteries. The Short wheel base with lowered suspension can look great (google lowered Rav4). I am from Australia and cannot appreciated the Registration requirements so your rules may eliminate my suggestions. Thanks for a great channel, you are inspiring people on the other side of the planet. I look forward to more updates. Christian
Thank you so much for your interest in my channel and for such a detailed and thoughtful message. Let me explain my point of view. As I want to use Tesla motor as it is constructed of course it would have to drive wheels using original reduction gears. And I would prefer to have the motor positioned at the rear. This would be the best weight distribution choice and easier to apply power to the rear wheels. However unfortunately not many cars have enough space to place even Tesla small drive motor. This eliminates all BMWs as they do not have enough space at the back and I don' t want to be modifying chassis anyway. In this case cars like Porsche Lotus Elise and Toyota MR2 would be ideal choice. Unfortunately I had to reject all of those for various reasons. Porsche and Lotus because of price. Cheapest Porsche Boxter in UK even for spares and repair is about 3- 4K pounds while Lotus would be about 8 -9 K. Toyota MR 2 is a bit too small - it will have place for the motor but not much space would be left for the battery. At the moment I am looking at Audi TT 1st gen or 2nd gen. The first gen could be bought in a range of 1K or below. The motor could be placed at the front while still space left for the battery. I am planing to have two battery packs one at the front and one at the rear. Either remove rear seats or take some space from the trunk.
I like the idea of using a chassis that is AWD capable. If you get bored with the conversion to FWD, just add a second motor in the back! The VAG platforms are a very tempting starting point since nice ones with failed drivetrains are abundant and very inexpensive.
@@LatutaEV I don't believe the TT has much room back there... you'd most likely need to cut the floor and build a subframe, which might raise some eyebrows at the MOT station. I'm probably going to look under one of the larger cars like an A4 the next time I visit the junkyard. There are a few TTs in inventory as well at the yard farther away. These have caught my eye as well for a swap candidate.
It's a shame you're not joining me in rx-8 / gs450h land but I will still follow along with interest!. Out of curiosity, why do you think using the tesla unit will result in a failure on points? What chassis mods would you need to do?
You never know this might be the next project 😉. I still love the idea to convert Mazda RX8. With Tesla I do not think that there will be space to place the motor at the rear of the RX8. At the same time placing the motor at the front will result in much more complex conversion. I would have to remove the transmission and modify the steering as well, I guess. I am sorry I was busy at work I had to travel to Europe over Xmas and was in Japan in January. I hope to visit you some time in the future, if the offer still stands?
Thanks, looking forward to the next video
Thank you so much Ross for your support. I have already started working on the next one. It will be about ZombieVerter VCU
Good luck with your purchase. 🙂
Looking forward to the next Zombieverter video 😉
Thank you so much, I watch your videos with great interest

Yes it is interesting idea, I am not sure how much space is at the back of the Audi TT quattro

eBay's guarantee is often worth about the same as the paper it's not printed on.
PayPal too.
Use a credit card for buyer protection.
Yes I was worried about this but decided to risk it anyway 😉
