Most modern Alkaline batteries no longer have a solid core electrode, so this trick will not work on the majority of household cells. I heard some Lithium cells still do, but opening those is significantly more risky.
It looks like that in the end, all he did was silver solder the hook in place, and not very well at that. Why would you not just use silver solder and either a soldering iron or a torch? It could have been done in five minutes without all the mess.
