Last 3 Albums? Bollocks! Xmas gifts &finds
There are so many to choose from. Your list is excellent. Personally, i would have tried to queeze Cream into the list. I think their influence on the direction of rock music has been significant.
Cheers Peter-thanks for taking the time to comment-though I did include Cream, at number 12, though I don't blame you for dozing off by then
@VinylMonkey58 Sorry for not paying sufficient attention at that point in the video. But you did a great job of rattling through the list and I must have been distracted at that point.
That would be messy 😵💫
Lost interest when The Smiths and bloody Morrisey turned up..
Know where you're coming from Paul-but I do try to separate the artist from the art
@VinylMonkey58 Fair comment!
Deep Purple? Supertramp?
Nah not supertramp. Not Fleetwood Mack either. He didnt Include Stone Roses Joy Division or Oasis but thats ok.
Aah Supertramp. To be honest I forgot about em, though not sure they'd have made top 20. I did see them live just after Crime of the Century came out-brilliant gig. I loved Deep Purple from IN Rock to Machine Head but sort of went off em after that. Thanks for taking the time to comment Andreas
Nice one monkey, glad to see the hogs in there, just geet hogging the stage on at mo bloody great miss t s mcphee, hope you well rave on my freind.❤
Cheers Mick-couldn't leave the mighty Groundhogs out
Not a bad list, some unexpected entrants (Groundhogs, Lindisfarne, Procol Harum) and a couple of headscratchers (Manics, Waterboys, Only Ones). I think you could've stretched the definition to include Martin Stephenson & The Daintees, as the band is essentially Martin & whoever's playing with him that night. No Prefab Sprout?
Cheers Mr Drummer. I'm going to see Martin S in my tiny local pub (25 seats or so) next week-looking forward to that. Yer, maybe Prefab Sprout shoulda been in there-I could easily pick an alternative 25
Maybe favorites-not greatest
Fair point Robert-only a bit of fun/something to argue about anyway. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment
Hawkwind, Madness, The Cult.
Cheers Paul -so many good bands, I've thought of at least another 20 I could have included. I'm not personally very keen on Madness though. Thanks for taking the time to comment
Hairy ape needs a shave and another dozen donuts!!
Cheers Daniel-noted
You are correct. You have the very best taste. Good one ✌🏻
Cheers Mazzy
I have never understood why Manic Street Preachers got to be so popular. But as I have always said "We can't like everything"
Great list The Bee Gees were born on the Isle of Man Their nationality is therefore Manx
Also if you have Bolan ,what about Bowie?
The people who started the thread said that we shouldn't include solo artists or people who front bands under their own name, otherwise he would have been in. A separate video perhaps
I am glad that someone gives credit to Marc Bolan. If he had lived longer, he might have done a commercial comeback similar to David Bowie's "Let's Dance" album in 1983. He had his unique style as a singer, songwriter and guitarist.
Graet stuff! Wrote down my picks before watching. I would have The Who,the Clash,Deep Purple the Kinks the small faces and faces and Family. And what about Queen? All the Best Mick.
Cheers Mick. Of those I had the Faces, Family and Deep Purple on my 'long list'. So many bands-difficult to pin down to 25
I just did this one, I found it tougher to do than the American thread. Too many great bands
I agree Steve-I've though of another 25 I maybe should have included. Thanks for taking the time to comment
Velvet Underground was my top group. Chicago almost made the top. Cool to see Suicide in there, I love that album. Fun list
Poor old Glen Matlock , ignored again !!!! 😂
Sorry Glen-I had only a minute or two before my video time ran out (my camera only does 20 mins for some reason?). I referred to Sid because you (Glen) were gone by the time the album was released
The Kinks? The Who?
A personal thing -but I've never been keen on these two. Paltry puts me off The Who, and though they do have some great songs, I never play an LP of theirs. Kinks just not my cup of tea-maybe a bit too 'English' for me? Thanks for taking the time to comment
I'm getting over that cold, it's on a national tour. Used to be music in the air whose catchy tunes we all bought. Now it's farmedoutgerms - - distinct drop in quality of life in that tradeoff. Cautious recommendation: *33 and a 3rd* series of pocket-size books still going after 25 years. No illustrations: approx120 pages by a different author each time on one album. Careful! some ('Parallel Lines') have next to nothing to do with the album & not much to do with the band. Hit and miss series: a favoured album may not translate to a good book. *Bowie's 'Low* ' = best in the series I know of, by Hugo Wilcken. ' *Diamond Dogs* ' = a good one. *Elvis Costello's 'Armed Forces* ' - - well researched, goes deep into songs for such a small book. *ThisisHardcoreby Pulp* , written by the woman who was responsible for marketing the album. ' *Let It Be* ' = another good'n that went the extra mile beyond a web trawl of everything-we-already-know. Shouldn't pay more than a tenner for any of them. I've got the usual feeling I've said all this before. I've typed that sentence before for sure. And that one. And this one.
Just keep on typing em for me 4-dman-Cheers
And this year’s award for outstanding modesty goes to? All those cats (well, 9 out of 10 of them) who preferred ‘Whiskas’ in that timeless taste test, Mohammed Ali with his grossly exaggerated ‘I am the Greatest’, or Trump laying claim to being “A very stable Genius”. They’re all knocked into a cocked hat by our undisputed, master of taste, that gold standard of nuanced and sensitive interpretation. The one and only, our very own, Vinyl Monkey. Who, quite irritatingly, chose 25 excellent bands as evidence of his exquisitely honed taste. T-Rex, Mal. Oh, ffs, you sure there isn’t something else going on there? Very attractive, isn’t he? Curly wig and another T-shirt in the post.
Being gifted with impeccable taste( in all things-music, art, food, friends) can be a curse as well as a blessing. It can be a daily struggle having to move amongst phillistines.
@@VinylMonkey58😆 No one has better music taste than themselves.
I’ve never been able to get into Genesis. I like the Bee Gees but better than The Smiths and Rolling Stones.
Fair points Richie. Maybe I shouldn't have a drink before I do these lists?
A very interesting list but I think my list is correct.
2 out of 25 free and stones,
So I got less than 10% correct. That's poor even by my standards. Okay then Mike-tell me the correct answers
If a shrink sees this you'll be sectioned 😂
It's just as well that very few people actually watch this rubbish, so I should be safe to continue with my 'care in the community'
You might need to explain what a "Dut" is for the non-hartlepudlians out there. Thought you might have slotted in The Stranglers on your list. Got to be better than Genesis haven't they?
Can't think what I was thinking about-though I do have a soft spot for Peter Gabriel. In Hartlepool a wooden hat is of course a 'Dut'
Can’t believe you haven’t spotted your bro’s unintentionally hilarious definition of what a ‘dut’ is, Brian. Caused great amusement among the lads on Wednesday night and may, yet, spawn a whole new range of headgear launched by Hartlepudlian artisan/entrepreneur, Alan Hargreaves, or as he will henceforth be known, The Woodendutnut.
@@colinwhite5355 I had spotted it but I didn't want to draw attention to it in case it knocked his confidence. Looking forward to the new fashion range though.
The Manic Street Preachers! Nice one. I completely forgot about them. I wanted to include a band from Wales on my list but used the Alarm. Loved your number 1.
Cheers John-I'll have a look at your list tomorrow
Evening Mally... Interesting list.. Glad to see The Waterboys there.. Not suprised to see Pink Floyd or the Stones but no Kinks? As songwriters the Bee Gees are only second to the Beatles.in my opinion . The Moodies left me totally spellbound throughout the 70s (fantastic musicianship).. Im sorry but all things Punk went right over my head. Joe Strummer with his "mockney" accent the son of Career British Overseas Foreign Diplomat and Mick Jones the cousin of the utterly disgraceful Grant Shapps... Dead easy to play as being "rebels" with backgrounds like that.. Take care Mally..
Cheers William My partner loved the Moodies-they always looked and sounded a bit posh for me (though I don't dispute their musicianship). Again, it's probably my prejudices that keeps The Kinks out-always sounded a bit 'too' English for someone with my Irish republican ancestry. You'll note I didn't include the Clash, partly for the reasons you outline, and partly cos they were just so derivative. Pistols a different kettle of fish in my opinion.
Maybe it's my Anglo-Saxon prejudice but The Kinks should always be on any list of great bands 😉
Cheers Norman-I know I'm in a minority re The Kinks. Following a pub discussion/argument a year or so ago I agreed to give their stuff another listen-but it's just not for me
@@VinylMonkey58 If you like The Waterboys, what do you think about Kurt Wallinger's World Party? I've got "Private Revolution" (1986), "Goodbye to Jumbo" (1990) and "Bang!" (1993) LPs.
better have Bad Brains and Minor Threat
Cheers Willie. I don't have anything by those two, but I will look em up. I was right into the first wave of British punk in 77 but by 79 was pretty didillusioned with that scene, and I went off buying new music (reverting to Dylan,Young,Cohen,V. Morrison,Iggy,Bowie etc) for quite a few years. It meant I missed a lot of good stuff, including much of the USA punk stuff. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
@@VinylMonkey58 Thanks mate. As for British music I would very much recommend you hear the Basement 5's lone album 1965---1980. Nothing like it, really!! A masterpiece by a very overlooked band. They have a great Peel session and a live concert at Groningen both on RUclips
Pere Ubu used to be a great show . Loved Rocket From The Tombs live in the 70's
Cheers Charlie-absolutely agree-and I also really enjoyed them, for their superb musicianship, when I seen them in London last year
Great list! Glad Little Feat made the cut! Picked up a couple of bands that I was not familiar with. Thanks for making the video
Cheers Sam, thanks for the kind comment
An interesting and fun list, but I always feel The Doors, Beach Boys and Velvet Underground are overrated. My list would include Calexico, Electric Flag, Santana and The Band
Let's go Brandon!
I was a paid up member of the Labour Party - once. A long time ago. But let's stick to the music. Very interesting list Mal but no Creedence Clearwater Revival ? Allman Brothers ? Canned Heat ? Santana ? Alice Cooper Band ? Doobie Brothers ? Loving Spoonful ? Blue Oyster Cult ? Steppenwolf ? Z.Z. Top ? Butterfield Blues Band ? Blood, Sweat and Tears ? Los Lobos ? Fabulous Thunderbirds ? I'd also have a few West Coast and Southern Rock bands in there. So many more great bands that I can't think of right now... Thanks as always for the inspiration and some great ideas. An excellent ranking. Cheers.
Cheers Phil. Of your list I would have had Santana and maybe Alice C in there, but I thought the 'rules' might preclude them. Steppenwolf and BS&T just outside my 25. For some reason I don't(but perhaps should) have an Allan's LP. Never keen on CCR,. I like the Doobies, but not near as much as others. ZZ Top a pub blues band(IMHO) and the others not really my thing. Thanks,as ever, for taking the time to watch and I always look forward to your comments
seen Pere Ubu at the Marquee
Cheers Tony. I seen them back in 79 in Newcastle, then again in the North East in the 80s, and then I seen them last year in London
@@VinylMonkey58 I think it was 78 when we saw them (20 seconds over Tokyo). I liked your Trump accolade. Just ordered that Jayhawks album cheers for the recommendation, I have a few of their's and quite a few Wilco. Seen Giant Sand not that long ago below Chelsea's ground believe it or not, apparently that robber Abramavitch's folly. Also caught Mark Lanegan at the Roundhouse before he passed.Did you ever listen to the Cowboy Junkies? We seem to have quite parallel interests, politics, football, fishing, Cuba. How weird went to my first ballet a month ago the same Swan Lake performance from the former Bolshoi woman from Georgia. Went down very similar to your experience. All the best Tony
@@tonyholding5233 I love the Cowboy Junkies Tony and have seen them twice, last time at the Sage(now the `Glasshouse) a few years ago. Perhaps we are of a similar vintage (I was born in 58) which might go a little way to explaining overlapping tastes? Cheers-Malcolm
I love your videos but a crazy list
Allmans CCR Grateful Dead Santana etc?
Cheers Danny - I was gonna take 'crazy' as a compliment there. As far as the examples you mention. I definitely would have included Santana-but wasn't sure if that was allowed (i.e. Carlos Santana -an individual?). I was never that keen on CCR, though ~I have some stuff on CD. I really don't like their singles probably cos they're murdered by loadsa pub covers bands and seem to be everywhere.I've always struggled with the Dead. I have 3 of theirs on CD but very rarely play them. Your comment will motivate me to give them another listen (I'm looking for them now). The Allan's are an omission from my collection. Thanks Danny for taking the time to watch and comment
@@VinylMonkey58 allman brothers are essential listening my friend
That's very harsh on The Experience. They were a serious band
One of my favourite bands of all time-though they were of course 2/3 British. I said my understanding of the 'rules' meant that bands called 'Anybody and the so and so's didn't count. Anyway-only a laugh/arguing point. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment
@VinylMonkey58 Oh yeah, I meant the rules were harsh, not your call. Totally understand. Not often you see Suicide followed by the Eagles either. 😂
Afternoon Mally, your energy levels are nothing short amazing.. Ive give up on most things American but never on its music.. Stopped watching Maslov a couple of years ago following his scathing attack on Roger Waters support of the people of Gazza and Maslovs rabid support of America and all things Israeli. As for the music. its all things B for me, namely.. The Band.. Beach Boys and The Byrds.. You can hear these bands in most American music made in the last 50 years or so.. The harmonies you hear from these three bands have no equal... and in the last 30 years Lambchop stand at the top of the tree for me.... Take care Mally..
It is amazing how many great bands start with the letter B. I think my favorite band from the 60s, 70s, 80s, & 90s start with the letter B.
Cheers William- I love Lambchop but only have them on cd. Also love The Band, but I didn't include them as they're four fifths Canadian. You take care too
Your right about the band members Mally being mostly Canadian, but the music.... TIMELESS.. Take care.
Good to see you take a stab at this. Thanks for the shoutout.
Cheers Richie-thanks for taking the time to watch and comment
Allowing myself an additional comment, here. Pere Ubu? Mal, for God’s sake, when they doled out ears, did they allocate you a couple of obsolete, worn out SETI prototype receivers? A year locked in a cell with Yoko Ono, in preference to a moment spent with that haranguing dick.
Mal, I put ‘The Flaming Lips’, on and I’m still a miserable old bastard. Was there a warranty with your assertion?
Maybe you didn't pick the best song. Try anything from'Yoshimi battles the pink robots' -maybe 'Do you Realize'
@ Sorry, Mal, the Philistine prevails, again. Want uplifting? ‘Daydream believer’, or, Weezer’s ‘Holiday’, which I’m going to listen to, now, as an antidote to Pere Ubu.
Maybe the best JJ album !
Keep on listening 👍
Cheers Growler
Lovely that Mal. Thanks for showing us round your room. I wish mine was as tidy as that. I keep thinking about getting a turntable to play my old vinyl on, as mine packed up years ago. You might have inspired me. Don't give up the dancing all together...
Cheers Phil -maybe see if Santa can sort you a turntable-won't be long now
Hi, interesting video. As you have kit from classic UK manufacturers, if you're looking for an improvement all 3 tend to recommend upgrading the source. I suspect you already are thinking along those lines, hence your remark regarding the relative costs of the TT & cartridge. The amp & speakers are well up to a 'better' TT, and you'd be able to still use the current cart on e.g. a Rega P6. WRT headphone use, the Nait 2 should have a 5 pin DIN socket on the rear for connecting a tape deck. 2 of the pins are line out used to send L&R signals to a tape recorder, 2 of the pins are line in used to connect the L&R output of a tape deck to the amp for listening. The line outs from the Nait can be connected to the input of a separate headphone amp which will then allow you to use phones. As with all things hifi, headphone amps are available all the way through the price range, from affordable to 'how much?'. I've attached a link to a unit at Richer Sounds which isn't too expensive, and comes from a well respected manufacturer. You will need a 5 pin DIN to phono adapter to hook up the headphone amp, but any decent hifi shop should be able to sort you out. Hope this is of use, cheers Gary www.richersounds.com/ifi-audio-zen-dac-v2-isilencer/
Thanks for that Gary-your advice very much appreciatedTThe headphone amp looks good. I'll have a look at the back of my amp to check connections etc
Nothing wrong with your turntable, especially with that excellent cartridge on it, the speakers are also excellent. If I had your system I would upgrade the amp first, but if you're happy with it, stay with everything you have. One thing that would improve the sound for not a lot of money is a phono preamplifier, it will be better than the phono on your amp. Great video.
Cheers and thanks for the hifi advice
@@VinylMonkey58 No bother at all.
What make of storage system do you use for your LP storage please ? (Yep - do upgrade your speakers , lots of vintage ones to chose from)
Cheers - there is a vintage hi-fi place in Middlesbrough, 10 miles south of here. My storage system is IKEA Kallax-very good and comes in a range of sizes/colours with doors/drawers etc available as extras
Nice but it would help if you filmed in landscape mode so you’ll fill the whole screen
Thanks Dave- I usually use a camera on a tripod. Are you saying that if I simply rotate the phone 90 degrees then it would do as you say? Sorry -I'm totally ignorant with phones/computers etc
I must learn to watch all of the video before commenting and then I would have seen the positive review of my photo. Praise from the "Polymaths polymath". I can sleep well tonight.
All good, & a damn sight tidier than my joint. I'd throw a lot more books at the room though - - another 2 bookcases at least plus books stacked on top of the bookcases plus books up against the walls & books on the floor & books on the window ledge. And many boxes of blu rays. But then the room would be the tip that mine is.
Aah-good-you didn't spot my major tidy up beforehand. There are lots of books, DVDs and more CDs upstairs, in the adjacent room and in our rather grandly named 'conservatory' . And that's not counting all of them at our caravan which I'll have to rehouse when it reaches the end of it's 15 year lifespan (scandalous and wasteful money making scam for site owners) next year. Cheers as ever 4-dman
You're from South Derry? We were separated at birth?
Born, bred and still living in Hartlepool, North East England Phil. Though I have been twice to Derry City and enjoyed a fine couple of nights out there.
Lovely lovely bolt hole Mally and perfect to escape too... First saw Martin and the Dainties in very late 80s at Middleton Hall here in Hull.. Still use a JVC deck i bought in Japan in 75 during my ten year spell in the Merchant Navy throughout the 70s..I remember the shop assistant trying desperately hard, and in vain to sell me the latest thing on the block... VERTICAL RECORD DECK.. (do you rember them Mally) I still use Aki speakers ive had for nearly as long and a Denon amp. A real mix and match i know but im far to old to start changing things now.. Loved the video... Take care Mally.
Cheers William-I had a mate who had a Bang & Olufsen vertical deck-just didn't seem right. Bet there's some stories from those years in the Merchant Navy-thanks as ever for the kind comments
I learnt by my first journey to New Zealand in 1973 that the Mellow Yellow and Purple Haze words were not just the names of chart toppers from the 60s..or similar concoctions Accupulco Gold or even California Sunshine.. The music of the Moody Blues aa a lot to answer to for me from that period...
