Improve a Bad Situation with Photography
In this landscape photography on location vlog, I drive up to Mores Mountain Loop Trail above Bogus Basin in Southern Idaho not too far from where I live in Boise. I had intended on filming a "what's in my camera bag" style video, but while exploring the area to show some of its natural beauty, I got a bit lost and had to make my way across the landscape bushwhacking to a focal point of the trail systems. It was hot, and it was dry, but the adventure (misadventure, perhaps?) was so fun to capture and share!

Ultimate Photography ISO Experiment - Film VS Digital VS Polaroid
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.21 час назад
In this Ultimate Photography ISO Experiment, my main objective is to test different camera types to see just how similar the images exposures turn out when using the same ISO value. Using medium format 120 film on a Chamonix F-2, a Sony A7RV, and a Polaroid I-2, I put them through their paces capturing challenging lighting conditions in the Idaho landscape. In this video, I wanted to share the 8 primary reasons I decided to make the Sony A7RV my main photography camera. Along the way, we take a little photo walk so I can share some street photos I took with along the greenbelt of Boise, Idaho. While it is definitely not a perfect camera, the A7RV has an ideal balance of everything going for it, making it ideal for me at this time. Because I like t...

Always bring a map I suppose! But a fun video
Haha great video!
Hi, great your Mamiya turns out okay. Did you shoot that 100 ISO Fujfilm at box speed? So it turned out a little softer than it should. Or did you overexpose a little since it was expired?
I think my primary issue was the temperature. I should have let it develop for longer before peeling apart. Because of the cold, the chemicals didn't spread as evenly.
At 78, it's been a few decades since I hauled a load of cameras and lenses through an off-trail bushwhacking adventure. It is surprisingly positive to watch someone else do it. It takes a braver man than I to haul a 100-400mm zoom on a snipe hunt up a mountain. And, I covet his hat. I casually spent a couple of decades looking for one like that, with only marginal success. I found one out of Australia, but it was prohibitively expensive to buy and ship. Tilly isn't cheap, but affordable and seems to be worth the price. Unhappily, now too old and lame to care.
Haha! Brave or dumb? Not sure which. I very much appreciate your comments, Randall! (especially about my hat)
I've been shooting in 35-37C conditions, and both my X-H2 and GFX 100 II are constantly showing overheat warnings. They're clearly not built for this hot; no idea why fuji thinks they are. edit: I only shoot stills, not even video.
Yeah, it's so unusual. Almost every other camera I've used for stills has does fine in heat especially if it's not left on and if I get it in the shade from time to time. Maybe it's cause Fuji uses a lot of processing power to make those super hip pics.
Half the fun of going out is the risk of getting lost. I enjoy visiting new places and just wandering where I can. It's good that you made it back out to be able to share this with us. Take care and I'll be looking for the next one.
Oh yeah! It feels like every time I hike this area alone, I get a little lost. I think because it's so local, a lot of people go off trail and explore, so I start following random side trails thinking they're official. I really appreciate the comment, my friend! Hope all is well with you!
Hey Jude! First of all, a big congrats on the new little one. Awesome! I really did very much enjoy this episode. Maybe because it closely resembles so many of mine. When I leave the house my wife always tells me to take my phone along and also to turn it on. If nothing else she says, it may at least help us find your body.😅 The heat has been brutal here also, and I haven't ventured very far out in it. Tomorrow looks promising and I am anxious to finally get out again. Take care now. Snow probably not all that far away anymore.
I hope you do get a chance to go out! The smoke the heat the responsibilities, they all seem to keep us away from what we love. Thank you so much for your encouragement!
@@JudeStreicherPhoto Did make it out this morning. It was wonderful at 44 degrees F. I once had two little dudes. Quite busy for sure. Take care now. Am expecting my new to me TLR today.
hahaha! glad that shutter release has become a key thing to bring along! I'm surprised the H2s isn't doing so well in the heat. I wouldn't be surprised if it's over 100 but melting in 80 degrees seems unusual. I'm impressed you're out and about so soon after #2! Also - I just picked up a little GoPro too to use exactly like you have the pocket 3... too funny. That bark image at 25:30 is awesome
It stays in my camera bag out of shear pier pressure. Can't be a landscape photographer without a giant backpack or a shutter release... ;P It's been an ongoing challenge this Fuji. I want to love it, but I also want to trade it out for something more heat resilient. Idaho just gets way too hot.
do you have any info on the 3D print files you used? Particularly the guide you drop in the viewfinder
For sure! Here's a link to a pattern that works with the RZ www.thingiverse.com/thing:4103307
@@JudeStreicherPhoto thanks very much
Driving like an Italian...haha. Great video!
Hahaha! That's my roots right there! So funny you could tell.
I only shoot film and treat film ISO as a tool. Really its something to consider when thinking about how I want the end product to look. I'm not one of those delusional people who think its possible to have a non edited finished photograph, but I try my best to get it right first time in camera, sometimes that means leaving taking the photo for another day. The inevitable changes that occur when negatives are converted to digital or even prints now in labs are beyond my control. I will be buying my own epson scanner, but that won't change much, I'm only doing that because one of the formats I shoot (6x17) costs so much to get scanned in labs, not because I could do it better.
That's a great mindset. And you're totally right - every photo is "edited" to some extent. Having control of the entire process - capturing, developing, scanning, etc. - is super fulfilling!
Hey Jude! Very much enjoyed your experiment here. Thanks for all your efforts in this process and for sharing the results. Not a big fan of shooting Polaroid. My results never seem to vary. They are always bad. Nice to see one of your videos again. Always enjoy them. Have a great summer now.🙂
Thank you so much! And Polaroid is a crap shoot - my words, not theirs. Haha! I've been trying to figure it out enough to get relatively consistent results, but every time I think I've "nailed it," I open up a new pack, and it does something unexpected...
one tip, most POLAROID type instant films, (instax Wide certainly) is rated at iso 800 !! so using your 160 iso constant variable in the experiment means you have under exposed it by a 2-3 stop factor!, if my maths is right, no wonder it all turned out dark. But in addendum to my earlier comments, ASA 100/160/200 are your friends in bright light, giving you some leeway in exposing the highlights, so none are too hot, certainly at EV values 15+ it SAVES washing out your pictures, and if it's grain you are after, EkTar is great, and IS a 100asa film, so this proves it.
Hey, thanks for the comment! You're right, most instant film is rated to higher ISO (like 640), but that SX-70 film I shot for most of this video is actually ISO160. I was pretty thorough in prepping the film for this test. If the images turned out dark, I suspect the cold had more to do with that than incorrect metering. I've experience poor transfer of chemicals due to cold temperatures. Again, very much appreciate the comment!
I have gone down this rabbit hole too, I shoot Nikon Z6, Hasselblad (H1 & 500c\m) and a sinar F2 and this is similar to what I've found, they all act similarly, However, in Larger formats, MF and LF to be precise, you NEED to be more careful, Glare and the telephoto nature of those lenses mean motion blur, and flaring are evils we have to face; so USE lens hoods ALWAYS, an ND filter, and cable release/M_up/Tripod all the time, it saves your pictures. Expose film over Digital, Film needs light to make the shadows have enough detail, Digital can be blown out with over, so under expose to get highlights correct (or use ND, as I mentioned previously). Digital is a great PARTNER to film!, it's histogram gives glare warnings, and shows us what contrast will look like, so if the shot works or not.
That makes a lot of sense! I feel like I can always "recover" more out of a digital image than I can out of film when scanning.
one tip, if you had acquired a Lomograflok back, then you could have eliminated one body in your kit, as the LF is capable of not only MF formats (6x4.5 to 6x17) but with the lomograflok polaroid (fujifilm Instax Wide) films are also available to shoot; so technically the LF could have done polaroid and Film, and if a LF camera digital back adaptor was used, then ALL three formats could have shared the same body, lens, and exposure meters, so simplifying the gear carried.
Man, that would have made this so much easier! Haha! Setting up three different cameras like this was a lot of excess effort!
Interesting! I would note, however, that my brothers Canon R5 images are typically brighter than my A7RV images with the same settings. Maybe I can conclude, from this video, that mine are more “accurate.” 😉
Heck yeah, yours is more accurate! A7RV is the epitome of accuracy.... hehehehe.
Great test and definitely good to see that they aren't wildly off from each other. That last shot was definitely worth the effort.
Thank you so much! Really love that last cliffside, and I'm happy I got it in film and digital just in case. ;)
great video. When i used to shoot pola on cold sets for references we would rub the back while timing the exposure. Worked a treat and colouirs were spot on
That's super helpful insight! I really appreciate it! I started sticking it in an inner pocket during the cold months after this trip. How do you deal with Polaroid in extreme heat? I've tried putting it in a cooler, but it seems like no matter what I do, if it's above 80, the image turns yellow/orange.
@@JudeStreicherPhoto we used to have a mini icebox with dry ice bags. We would check temp on location and then adjust accordingly but pola is by nature not constant. I never used pola as a last image it was always just to check. So even if colours were off it didnt matter as i could see what the outcome would be like regardless. When doing BW it was slightly different as we would use the peel apart and then the negative would come from that at times. But then colour wasnt an issue
Good to see you back on the tube again. Your landscape is so different from here in the UK.
I have to be honest, with the weather we've been having here this summer, I wish my landscape was like yours! Haha!
Dude, welcome back! I'm glad you spent all that time and effort... just to confirm on Wikipedia haha. Looking forward to what else you get into this summer

I had Sony A7RIII with 42 megapixels, a great Camera ! I switched it for a Sony A7RIV and later got a Sony A7RIVA, now I have switched the Sony A7RIV to a Sony A7RV. I like the 61 megapixels ! I have used Hasselblad 6x6 cm and Sinar 4x5" and 5x7" Cameras, so I just need very good quality. I do Landscape, Nature, Macro, Bird, Wildlife, Portrait, City/Street/Urban, Architecture and more Photography. I often crop some of the image, either in slim panorama or in square format, so the 61 megapixels comes to their right ! The Sony A7RV is the best ever Camera that I have worked with for 45 years as both a professional and hobby Photographer, using a lot of different Cameras, I like the compact size of the Sony A7RV, I have large hands, but I have no problems ! The EVF and the IBIS plus the Bird´s eye detection of the Sony A7RV are the reason that I upgraded the Camera, for those who do not need these, I cn highly recommend the Sony A7RIVA ! When you have made your own custom settings in the Camera, it is very easy to use. I NEVER do videos and I NEVER use zooms ! I only use prime Lenses, zooms are too big, too heavy and too expensive, one of my mentors always said, "If you have a prime wide angle Lens and a short prime tele Lens, then you can cover about 90% of all kind of Photography ! I have 14, 21, 24, two 35, 55, 65 Macro, 85, 110 Macro, 135 and 500mm Lenses.
Have had the F for a few years now and it’s amazing!! Great photos - enjoy!!
Thanks for the rundown! Moved from the Z6ii to the A7iv, and have realized everything I really want is on the A7RV... including Crop Mode with 26mp :D. The low rez LCD/EVF is also a prime motivator for me... I just feel on my A7iv I have to port everything to the computer to if it's decent, hoping the A7RV's screen resolution assists in bypassing post a bit. Also getting more reach for BIF and wildlife in Crop Mode is a factoring agent. Great video, looking forward to watching your journey, Sub'd.
I have this camera and love it also and did get the battery grip for it to help with holding it and being able to hold the extra battery I also need to get more lenses for it and a flash or two but did get the Sony 70-200mm 2.8 ii and the Sony 200-600mm with the 1.4 and the 2x converters also got the viltrox 16mm 1.8 for the northern lights here in Alaska
Hey Jude, enjoyed this video. Liked, and subbed. What I appreciate most is that you just shared your thought process with us, and then showed your work.
I bought the A7RV when it was released and, although my budget still hurts, it makes me very happy. Only downside, the pictures out of camera when I shoot in Auto mode are impressive. They need very little editing besides contrast and shadows. Amazing camera.
Congratulations on your addition to the family. With you on the upgrade. After 5 years shooting landscapes on Olympus m43 cameras I pulled the trigger on a used Nikon Z7ii towards the end of last year and am really happy with the images I'm getting.
That's so awesome! I've really loved the images full frame has been giving me. And I'll be honest, if I wasn't already highly invested in Sony, I probably would have gone Nikon Z7ii as well. Nikon's been making some great cameras recently!
Excellent. Did you crop out the sprocket holes?
Yes, I did. I couldn't decide if they distracted from the photo or not, but I think in hindsight, I actually prefer the photos with sprockets.
So do you think it's strictly a walkaround / street camera? I don't imagine you'll shoot with it when much you're out shooting landscapes?
Yeah, for landscape photography, this might be relegated to "backup camera." While that 35mm is a pretty versatile focal length, I'd feel pretty limited overall with the landscapes I like shooting. Plus the lack of solid weather sealing means a no-go in most interesting outdoor photography situations.
very retro looking!
Thank you! I love the images coming out of this camera!
Give that camera to someone who can shoot
That’s a bit harsh
No need to be an ass. Let people enjoy what they buy with their own money.
You forgot the most important reason. The copper coloured lens mount. Glad you found a camera that you like, hope it sticks this time ;) Btw. 800 photos isn't even one event ;) Then again it will probably take 10+ years before my Linhof reaches those numbers 😅
I like it well enough for now, but it's so incredibly advanced for a camera, it loses all the charm that I get from my quirky film cameras. I am missing my Fuji for sure, but I guess that ship has sailed (for now?) Oh man, 800 in large format would be a lifetime for me, haha! Unless I had a 6x17 Shen Hao...
@@JudeStreicherPhoto ha ha. Probably more accurate that it will take a life time. During the last year or do I've managed to go through perhaps 30 sheets of 4x5. So 32 years apparently 😅 Best of luck with the camera system. You can always get an x100-series camera as a secondary camera down the line. That is if one can get hold of one, a bit of a hype there.
I’m torn in between getting the Sony A7iv or the Nikon D850 as my first camera. I am planning to become a professional photographer. I’ve heard the Sony cameras collect dust on the sensor often, are you experiencing that problem?
The A7IV is a very powerful camera. Has a TON of features and gets near identical results to the A7RV. If you're trying to decide based on resolution, the D850 probably has plenty of that for any situation. If you want a super fast autofocus and a lighter system with modern capabilities, then the A7IV might be perfect. I never felt lacking when I used it. You can turn on a sensor cover on the A7IV to protect from too much dust, but you're still going to get some. I noticed having to use an air rocket from time to time and sensor cleaning function in camera to knock of big dust particles, but it was never terrible. Mostly, I always protected the sensor by making lens changes with the sensor facing downward and kept the rear cap on my lenses. Hope that helps!
First of all, a big congrats on the little one on the way. Thats awesome. Secondly, if one already has a large investment in a camera brand, staying with that brand makes a whole lotta sense. Especially when it's a good brand to start with. Looking like I agree with you. Have a Great weekend now.😎
Thank you so much! We are all pretty excited. Oh yeah, I was doing tons of calculations to see just how much I would lose by switching to a different system, and yeah, it’s not worth it.
good stuff bud. glad you're enjoying this one! I've never used a Sony, but man I am jealous of that 20-70mm f/4. That would be my go-to lens for so many different things!
It’s a pretty overpowered camera for what I do, but it’s nice to have something I can grow into. Haha! And yeah, that 20-70 looks great for landscape!
I just discovered your channel It's amazing to see that kind of reflections on RUclips ! It makes me feel good to see that the phase I'm passing through right now is shared by other artists :) (actually my friends don't understand yet this approch to art, i admit that i was feeling a bit lonely) Thank you !
Yes! So happy my video found its way to the right people. It can be a lonely path seeking deeper art and purpose in what we do. I’ve felt the same way recently, which inspired this video. You’re never alone if you open to others like you!
I've been on a similar path recently. I felt I wanted the photographs I'm taking to have a purpose behind them rather than random photos of anything that catches my eye. I like the idea of photo projects. One that I'm working on is the slate Quarries of North Wales.
That sounds like an incredible project! I'd love to see some of the work you've been doing on it. Nothing is more inspiring for me than seeing the deep works of other artists! Thank you so much for checking out my video, my friend!
Great introspection and topic bud. I was just wondering this week what you had been up to, sounds like you were knee deep in reflection haha. Like you, I also strive to keep whatever video or photos I put out there as 100% authentically mine, which is why I stopped using the “RUclips music tracks” or the clickbait titles/thumbnails, etc. I’d rather have 10% the audience and traffic than go down that path
Haha! Yup, I was digging deep over the past few weeks. I feel like so much of the online space is contrived that it's almost impossible to find the individuals who actually "keep it real." So blessed to have photographers like you out there who just want to be who they are without concern of the Algorithms!
i enjoy your philosophies, Jude. For myself, the world could care little if I even take a picture much less create a photo. Today I was out most of the day with my dog and cameras. Though I had several cameras, I only shot film. I photographed nature and man's interaction with Nature; mostly along a river. I have had at least one success today and that was getting out to do what I enjoy. Tomorrow I am hoping for at least one more success, and that would be, to find that I made at least one photo that pleases me. Have a Great rest of the weekend now.
Success is a personal benchmark, isn't it? I love hearing about your personal successes and that mindset! Thank you for sharing, and I am excited you are getting out with your camera!
Hi! Here are my random thoughts. Photography, landscape for me frees us emotionally and reveals things from inside we may not have wanted or known how to deal with. I see man, in general at war with the environment and that has deep psychological and even biological consequences. We talk about being out in "nature" as if it is a foreign entity. You often hear landscape photographers say their job is to make scenes make sense. I view this as wrong. When you do that you are trying to impose something on nature that is not there. You are attempting to put humans' myopic view on nature. I also see numerous photographers work through tough emotions with their photography. Also, photography is, for me anyway something quite enjoyable and rewarding while I'm doing it. If I can bring some of that joy to other people through a photograph or video that's an added bonus. I hope something in there makes some sense. Keep on going. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I have taken a bit of time to really think about how best to respond since this is such a deep topic, and a difficult one to discuss in RUclips comments. Haha! But I wholeheartedly agree with you. Our language seems to encourage the mindset of humans being separate from nature, and yet, we are so deeply connected. I really appreciate you sharing your perspective on the matter as it raises an even deeper connection that should definitely be remembered!
I 100% agree with you Jude about having your photography meaning more than just snapping shots of cool places. Wanting more out of your art is a true artist's goal. What do you want to communicate with your art? I've been asking myself that question as well. As I reflect on my work from the last year, I can't see a specific style, but I can see a theme of colorful, joyous, and beauty. Maybe the thing for you to do is to reflect on all your past work and see if you can see a style or theme. Might give you some inspiration just like Andy Goldsworthy's book did. Thanks for that tip by the way. I always love discovering other artists. Check out the book "Foraged Art: Creating Projects Using Blooms, Branches, Leaves, Stones, and Other Elements Discovered in Nature". It might provide some more inspiration. I look forward to seeing your journey on this path! Exciting!!! Thanks for the video, Jude. Love this topic. Keep going.
Thank you so much for the book suggestion! I'll see if I can find it my library. From what google has shown me, yes, it looks like it would provide some great inspiration for my project! I really appreciate the support!
Great video Jude. Love the concept, the photos and the methodology you are using. I could listen to you narrate all day! LOL. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
I really appreciate your kind words! I really loved going out with my cameras for this video! I definitely want to do more of this type of project this year! Thanks again!
Loved the shot into the sun

Thank you so much for subscribing! I really appreciate the support!
also another tip, for the polaroid shot of the church, perhaps an ND filter?(a variable, on the sky ending at the church roof), as the sun from behind the belfry overexposed the shot by 1-2 stops, making it unusable, if you don't photoshop it first; perhaps a shot for digital instead, where this glare can be dealt with easily.
use a 2 stop grey grad to darken sky. increase exposure 2 stops to get some detail in the land
That's a smarter idea - especially when using slide film.
I like your sense of humor. I got a good laugh this morning!
So glad you enjoyed it! I was cracking up at what Photoshop came up with when I typed random animals and things!
I started taking photos first, then found RUclipsrs who took photos in that area.
What kind of photos do you take? I think it's way healthier to discover a direction for oneself and not fall into the social media pitfall!
@@JudeStreicherPhoto I do landscape. I love hiking and being outdoors by myself.
