This is an awesome video. I don't see many photographers on RUclips talk about this. I can see the evolution of my photography journey from using the camera from my phone to investing in an actual camera & gear. Not only that, my own growth from being really overweight and losing 80lbs thus far reflected in my photos and became more passionate, happy & confident about the photos i take. You're doing a good keep up the good work & happy holidays. 👍

That is so great! Congrats on losing 80lb! Can’t even imagine how much dedication that takes!! And I love looking back at some of my photos I took when I first got a camera and cringing a bit. Haha! Thank you so much for the encouraging words!

Good one Jude. Being an old person now I can definitely say that ones photography is ever changing. I started out shooting color film and had my run at shooting digital.
Still do shoot digital, but shooting B&W film more and more. Photography is still as enjoyable as it has always been. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

I agree mate, photographers who are hitting big numbers on social media are good at social media and not necessarily any good at photography. I ditched my big instagram photography page (over 10k followers) and now have a tiny page where I interact with people who are more interested in the art of photography than the transient dopamine rush of big follower numbers. And I agree with your philosophy of photography or art as a journey, not a destination. I've gone from film on mechanical slr cameras to film on auto focus slr cameras to big and expensive digital slr gear and then the latest and greatest mirrorless gear....all without knowing what I really want to express in my photographs. I just thought good gear was necessary to be a good photographer. I've ditched all of that. Now, I primarily use a basic 35mm point and shoot. I let the camera work out the technical stuff and I just focus on composition and I've started to enjoy photography again...and have been getting a lot more shots that I'd miss with a big mirrorless or slr kit. Stay on the path my friend, the journey is long...but it's worth it.

Instagram had a bad influence on my photography because it is uniform and flashy and it changes slightly your way of looking at the 'in between' worlds

It’s a whole skill to grow on socials nowadays especially. There’s so much competition and it doesn’t reward authenticity, it rewards popularity and “sameness.” I’m so impressed that you abandoned such a successful account, but props to you for building one that you’re proud of! I’ve looked at your photos, and they’re amazing!! Thank you so much for the support!

Great video man. It’s definitely a topic I’ve struggled with early on, especially trying to emulate what others were doing as a way to be successful more quickly. Over time though I’ve stopped comparing and/or trying to make myself fit a certain mold and just do what feels right. I agree it’s ongoing, and rather than trying to find a style I’m mostly just thinking one will emerge, if there ever is one? Ha

I went through a long period of just trying to copy/emulate others’ photographs that I thought were cool. Actually, I think I’m still doing that… haha! One of my favorite art books is “steel like an artist”. It gives a great perspective on the topic. I feel like you’ve got a style. It’s the Brian-style!

Photography is musical, not visual. That is my phrasis for many time. My soundtrack in every of my photograph is Joy Division, a pure darkness, and from there I add light. It's like diving into a very deep ocean and back to surface.
