  • Why do artists experience burnout? This is a question I’ve often wondered about having experienced it myself from time to time. In this video, I hope to discuss the "why" behind burnout so that you can overcome it if you’re in the middle of it, or avoid it if you haven’t experienced it yet.

In my experience, it all boils down to one simple reason. You aren't feeding your creativity with the fuel necessary to keep you thriving. In other words, your "why" for your art has been forgotten. Try reminding yourself of why you love what you are creating, bring it back to basics, let your brain rest and recover, then find rekindled excitement over your art.

All good points! I've found that burnout happens to me in two cases: when I'm trying to do too much at once or when expectations don't match reality. I think as long as we approach whatever art form through the right lens (ha!), then the enjoyment naturally follows. I've typically gotten burned out too when I was trying to prove something, or pushing something to meet some external expectation. Now that I just do things for me, the fun is there all the time no matter how much time there is to dedicate to it.

Oh yeah, those sound like really frustrating ways to burn out! Thankfully, they haven't stopped you from getting out there, making content and creating beautiful photos! It sounds like you've got the right perspective, though, to keep on going and have a lot of fun while you're out there! Thanks so much for sharing, man!

I don't know if it was true burnout in the sense, but several years ago, for many reasons unrelated to my art as a photographer, I simply quit. It was nearly a full year before I took another photo. I finally ended up taking my daughters out to get a photo of them, had it printed and framed it for my wife for mothers day. I'm not sure if she was happier about the photo or the fact that I was taking photos again.
I still have moments when I feel like I'm getting burned out, but it's usually more a frustration of not being able to dedicate the time that I really want to to the art. If I can actually get out with the camera, it is such a rejuvenating experience. My why for photography has so many answers, anything from being able to share my world with others to just enjoying the process of creating.

Well, I'm happy you haven't quit for good, too! I believe if something is a part of you, like photography is in you, then you can't run away from it forever. I totally get the frustration that comes from not being able to spend more time with it. It reminds me of opening up your windows for the first time after a long cold winter. Somehow that spring air refreshes the entire house! Thank you so much for sharing! I loved reading a little piece of your story!
