  • In this landscape photography on location outing, we drive up Bogus Basin Road north of downtown Boise to photograph incredible low hanging clouds over the hills! There are a lot of photos shared on this trip because the light was so good and the clouds created such a dramatic subject. I am super excited to share this collection of images with you!

With a Fuji GFX 50S II and a few polar pro filters, you can photograph high dynamic range situations like this so easily! It's inherently challenging for cameras to pull details out of super bright highlights when the shadows are super dark from the clouds. This is where Fujifilm's "larger than full frame" sensor really shines!
I always go into these photoshoots with a vague plan, call it a blueprint. Otherwise, I'm just wandering around like I'm lost. This time, my plan was to drive straight up to the top, hike into the snowy forest, and photograph the pine forest. On the way up, however, the light and cloud cover was so picturesque, I had to pull over and photograph it. This resulted in some of my most dramatic photos ever! The snow on the trails was too deep when I made it to the top, so I had to abandon that part of the plan as well. Isn't it funny how nature doesn't follow your plans? So we abandon the plan and focus on the light and clouds and photography.

I felt so good coming down the mountain from this trip! Like even though I didn't get the photos I expected, nature gave me better ones! That photo is definitely one of my favorites too! Thank you so much!

Hey! I really appreciate that! I've been a composer longer than a photographer, but I'm more reserved with it.

Nice work man! The mountainsides you've got up that direction look awesome this time of year. I really liked the first ones with the fog/low clouds.

Thank you, sir! I had no idea if that particular shot would turn out. I was frantically trying to capture it as the sun beamed through, so I didn't have much time to compose it.

Love this! Thanks for sharing. I feel like there are a couple of hills around Lewiston and Kooskia that I've shot to death, but each time I drive past there I end up stopping to take another because the light, or the foliage, is new and exciting. How quickly after the birth of your avacado tagging child did you get back into short photography trips like this? Just had twins.

Hey! Twins! Congratulations! That is super exciting! So I will just say my wife is incredible cause she's the one who has encouraged me to go out and make these videos more often now. But it was a good 2 years after my daughter was born before I was able to sneak out consistently. I'm sure with twins, though, everything gets extended... I would just pack a camera when we went for walks around town as a family to get some hand-held shots wherever I could.
