      The tail thing is an indication of clenching up, like they are uneasy/staying prepared/etc which is usually a stress response, like when she is roaming in an unfamiliar place or is just unsure or weary for some reason... but it also does this when she needs to go, so that's why I said in the video, I think she needs to go because I know she isn't stressed or unsure here. Basically, if the tail is dragging limp and straight they are usually 100% secure and confident, they are loose and carefree so it just drags behind them... Any kind of curling or spiraling is usually going to be stress related as they are tightening up those muscles to achieve that effect- think clenched fists vs a limp hand. If you look back at my last video there was a clip where Kale is almost running down to the floor from atop the ackie enclosure, out of nowhere he starts spiraling his tail... when he gets down to the floor, he immediately goes to the bathroom. Something they are doing to prepare to expel waste is causing some kind of muscle interaction in the tail, either from them holding it or maybe it's just them evoking a stress response as they are about to make themselves vulnerable for the duration of the pottie break - I really don't know what it is, just that I can use it to predict them needing to go.

    Amazing how tree monitors can recognize whether another of their species is male or female so quickly. Is this from previous experience of them encountering each other? I know it's been a while since you've heard from me, but I've made significant progress in the enclosure. Finished the rock wall, getting some pond liner for my Zen Habitats 4x4, so bedding is going to occur soon. Noticing the new enclosure too! Any hints who it's for?

    • @TreeMonitorTraining
      @TreeMonitorTraining 5 дней назад

      The enclosure is an upgrade for the Ackie, but I've been procrastinating with it. The two trees lived together up until they were like a yr or so old and first started showing aggression to each other. I'm sure it's just normal male territorial beef but they know where each other lives and they are always checking to see if they can see each other and marking different territory as theirs all over the living room. It never goes further than the agitation seen here unless they get within a few feet of each other. But I've gotten pretty good at managing positioning and keeping them from getting to each other's glass doors. I've had few charged exchanges at the doors and one time Ajax leapt from the Ackie enclosure trying to get Kale while I was carrying him, but he missed and that was the only real close call I ever had since they were separated. He was like a bullet and launched right at me... In my videos they are always calm and relaxed, moving around like snails because they have no care in the world, but these doods go super saiyan when they get close to each other. You can't imagine how fast they are and how far they can jump when they want to.

    • @TreeMonitorTraining
      @TreeMonitorTraining 10 дней назад

      Hard to say...they are coming up on their 2nd birthdays. The first one was probably this tame/socialized/trained by the time he was 7 months old, but I was only actually working with him for a few months. There are a lot of variables that go into this and I didn't know WTH I was doing when I started out. Knowing what I know now, I could probably get them completely tamed down (feeling confident, safe and secure always) and socialized (interested in participating in interaction with you) within 2-3 months). The training would only take a month or two to get really ingrained - it happens real fast and then upkeep happens naturally. I'm not sure if there are gender differences as both my tree monitors are male. I'd guess there are slight differences in confidence. But my Ackie monitor is female and I had no trouble working with her. She actually responds to vocalizations more than the tree monitors do. I'm fairly confident I could do something similar with just about any monitor regardless of species or gender in about 5-6 months tops.

    • @TreeMonitorTraining
      @TreeMonitorTraining 10 дней назад

      @@ikcaruswingz Yeah, I've heard that before too about other reptiles. I trained mine to come down to my tile floor and go there for easy cleanup. It didn't take much because they are already holding it if they know you let them come out. Reptiles seem to be really good at pattern recognition and that's how all the training I do works. I have videos on this channel showing how I trained them to jump on command...basically it all works the same: I run them thru the same event that is setup to produce the desired behavior. You want to keep all the variables as close to the same as possible each time while providing cues to the animal while he is performing the behavior you are trying to teach. (See one of my ladder videos) You don't need food, in fact it distracts them. I only train after they have been fed and calmed down for a bit. With enough repetition on the behavior that you are teaching...you can then present them with the cue you used during training which will trigger the pattern recognition from the training event you put them through and they will perform the action they got used to performing while hearing that sound or seeing that gesture or whatever cues you are using. (multiple cues - sound and gesture works best) I'm sure this would work with any monitor and probably has some use with other reptiles as well.

    • @TreeMonitorTraining
      @TreeMonitorTraining 26 дней назад

      @@jrh283 Ok, so he's not terrified of you, but he lacks confidence. If you've had him for 7-8 months and he's still behaving this way, he must be in a reptile room or some other room where you don't spend most of your time. If you watch enough people with enclosures in their living rooms, bedrooms, or other common areas... the answer becomes obvious. You need to spend more time in the animals presence without crossing boundaries. He needs to be able to hear and see you from wherever he is hiding from you and then he needs to MAKE THE CHOICE to come out in your presence. Every time he does this, and you don't mess it up by focusing on him too much, he will build confidence. A monitor that is not confident will avoid you if he can. Read a book, fold laundry, whatever...anything you do in your life that can be done within 10 ft of that enclosure... start doing it there. Outside of that and your usually feedings... just ignore him. Let him see you don't only exist when you are messing with him. My monitors all hid from me in the beginning. My enclosures are in the living room though, so it didn't take long to get over this. But, they were desensitized to my dogs presence before mine. I used to watch them from a webcam while I was at work, and they were perfectly fine with my dogs walking right past their enclosures when they were still darting from me when I came home from work. Let this dood see you a lot more. My computer desk, where I spend most of my time is like 8 ft directly in front of the enclosure shown in this video. These guys had ample opportunity to observe me from the safety of their perches and come to their own conclusion that I was not a threat to them in any way. It only takes a few months with an enclosure in a common area for these guys to literally be begging you for attention so it shouldn't take long to at least build some confidence around you in whatever room you have them in. It's the same brain in every one of these guys and every monitor will behave like a komodo dragon given enough time in presence. Let me know how things go and feel free to hit me up anytime.

      @@jrh283 Yeah for sure it's tough to leave them be. I literally terrorized Ajax his first month or so because he kept getting into places I couldn't find him and I'd have to tear out the entire enclosure to find him. It wasn't until I backed off and just let him be that he started becoming confident to be out while I was sitting at my computer right in front of the enclosure. Trust me, I messed up a bunch. they are very forgiving and this shit happens almost naturally as long as you put in the time and don't cross boundaries. People, including me, tend to get in their own way by trying to make it happen. But all it takes is time in presence without crossing boundaries.

It's hilarious that I never even intended to have a relationship with them like this. I was content to just observe them and take care of them until that first day of interaction just sort of happened. After that, everything just went so fast and they were both putting in just as much effort as I was in figuring each other out. All done with no food, no touching... This entire process was a collaboration from the start and they made a lot of the important leaps forward themselves, on spec, just trusting that it would work out for them and no harm would come to them. These things are way smarter than people realize and I feel absolutely honored to have shared this experience with them. To this day I try to respect their independence as much as I possibly can out of respect for the huge chance they took on me. Although I don't have experience with taking in an adult tree monitor, the principles are all still the same. Leave him be besides tong feeding in the beginning so he can get comfortable around you and then just let him see you a lot in that room doing shit unrelated to him so he knows you are just a part of the environment and not a threat to him. If they only see you when you are coming up to their enclosure they read it as them being your target - they have to understand that you don't only exist to mess with them. Spend as much time as possible in that room ignoring them. Good luck bro, these guys are so rewarding to build a relationship with.

    So-she understands that “come on” means get onto my hand, and “go on” means get off, regardless of the location?

    • @TreeMonitorTraining
      @TreeMonitorTraining Месяц назад

      @user-st7qh2bn3j No, it's more abstract than that. Kinda hard to explain but I'll try whilst trying not to sound too crazy. They definitely don't understand words or the exact sound. It's more about the repetition, the tone, and the sequence of repetition and they recognize the pattern and remember their response to it, then perform it. I may have referred to this "pattern" as "the stage" or the "situation" or the "puzzle" previously. So throughout this video and the one before it, I'm keeping everything about the situation pretty standard because I'm still trying to teach her. Palm face down, stationary. Droning "come-on" usually on set rhythm. If, there's no response I might alter the rhythm... slow it down some usually, or throw in a different sound to regain attention - chrp chrp chrp. If you watch closely when I am droning something over and over... there are little responses from her usually just after a sound in the sequence and she gets on the same rhythm. It's almost like playing an instrument. I know it sounds crazy, but I'm literally feeling it in the moment and can tell when she's on or off with me. Now, once she climbed to my shoulder once or twice she figures it out that the droning stops and she hears other noises. It's like a puzzle she has figured out. They are great problem solvers by nature so they are always looking for solutions to everything. It really only took around 15-20 or so of these successes to feel comfortable attempting it elswhere in a nonstandard way. But the more parts of the pattern I present her, the easier it is for her to recognize it. So palm face down presented off to the side...droning "come-on", I might have to change the sequence pace to get her on cue... another thing that I'm doing that might not be clear is just prior to come-on, I lift my head, and then as I'm saying it, I nod my head down on each iteration. You might notice the camera shaking a bit, up and down, during this droning.... that's why. Usually, those 3 things are enough for her to recognize the pattern and then climb to my shoulder. Since she always loops my neck and goes down the other arm... it's easy to move her from place to place doing this. So she'll go back into the enclosure on her own, it doesn't matter what I'm saying there. It's best to view all my talking to the guys in the videos as just narration for the video... or me expressing my emotional bond with them. In some early videos with Lil Joy sometimes I'm droning "where you going" instead of "come on". the words don't matter, it's the repeating sequence. It's all just behavioral conditioning. It's similar to what I'm doing with the trees on the ladder. Their pattern is extended arm, "chrp chrp chrp", or in Kale's case... "snap", extended arm. It's all just pattern recognition and they complete the sequence. Now of course... they have to already be tame and socialized for this training to work. Once the pattern is ingrained in them deeply... it becomes what i refer to as the "imprint"... sometimes just presenting a single part of the pattern sets them off... like a few times I have just chirped at Ajax... causing him to immediately turn and jump to me, or a snap with Kale, and with lil joy, sometimes just droning "come on" has her scrambling around looking for my hand even when it's not presented. I keep wanting to make a more concise video of what I'm doing with these guys because I know, right now, the explanation is spread as little nuggets across like 30 videos totalling hrs of footage because I was learning everything as I worked with them over time as well. I get that it's hard to understand what I'm trying to stay even when you've watched them all because the good explanations are so spread out and my own thoughts about it all have changed over time too. Hopefully I get time to make something like that soon.

A few years ago I remembered my love for these animals out of nowhere and began researching different species and care guides to ensure it was something I could do and just went for it - all in. These are my first 3 reptiles besides catching and keeping wild lizards for short periods as a child. I sorta just fell into understanding their behavior and how to work with them by accident one day and learned more and more as it went on. I've detailed the whole process on this channel in my playlist videos. Anyone can do this as long as they understand/respect the animal's independent nature and don't cross boundaries.

    • @TreeMonitorTraining
      @TreeMonitorTraining Месяц назад

      Yeah, it's weird too because they mostly filter things out that they know are not a threat. Like my dogs barking or sometimes when I'm trying to call them... it's all just totally ignored and they won't even react to the sound. But when you use sound during a specific activity, in the same way repeatedly, they notice it, and then eventually start to associate that sound cue with that situation. It's not just food based either because I never used food in training my ackie to climb me, or my trees to jump to me. It's more a pattern recognition taking place with how their brains work or something which is why the stuff I'm doing works so well. I'm creating these short repeatable situations to run them thru while keeping everything in the situation pretty standard. Once you rep the hell out of a situation, then just presenting them with 1 or 2 parts of that situation(sound cue, gesture, etc), triggers a response from them and they try to perform the learned situations outcome. It's hard to explain without examples... I'm def going to make a concise video about this at some point when I have time because right now this idea is split between like 9 videos totalling a few hrs but the meat of it is really only like 10-15m or so I'd guess.

      That's a nice way of putting it. Whenever I'm teaching them something new, I try and keep all the variables in that situation the same until I have run them through it enough times so that their response becomes a reaction to that situation. Then later I can present parts of that situation to them, such as the repeating sound cue with the presence of my hand in a recognized position, and they will associate that with the old situation I ran them through, remember their own response to it, and then just perform it. It's pretty wild...I think it's pattern recognition mostly.

    • @TreeMonitorTraining
      @TreeMonitorTraining 2 месяца назад

      Kale's the wild caught one, Ajax is CBB. Kale's just a lot more confident than Ajax. Full spiral is a defensive display, Ajax didn't understand what was going on and was just way more stressed. When we went over the blood tests later that week, they even pointed out some elevated marker in both that can be affected by stress due to the forced handling during the visit and the taking of the blood. This marker was a lot higher in Ajax test results while Kale's was just at the higher end of a normal reading. Keep in mind, I had to force handle Kale some when I first got him due to treating him for parasites, which required me to get a syringe into his mouth while holding him steady so I could force medicine down his throat. I later came up with an easier way to do it, but those first couple times required like 20-30m of nonstop forced handling until he gave up struggling and allowed me to get the syringe in. Ajax has no experiences anywhere near what was happening to him at the vet that day. So, he was just frightened. But he was fine the very next day.

      @TreeMonitorTraining 2 месяца назад

      Yeah, I use sound a lot more with the Ackie and saying Lil Joy with the same inflection as Lil Boy worked well when I tested it after confirming she was female. I'm so used to calling out with that sound when I approach the enclosure, I wanted to keep it as similar as possible. Not unlike your own Georgie issue. Those are LED lights(Fluval Aquasky 2.0). The two smaller enclosures are screen tops so the LED strip is sitting on top of the enclosure. This is why nobody hangs out on Ajax large enclosure as the LED strip is inside so no heat source to lay around on atop the enclosure. They are laying on the heat sink used to dissipate the heat it generates. Not ideal for the LED strip's longevity, but they have been doing this for almost 2 years now without issue. The new Ackie enclosure will have one inside and then I think I'm going to remove this one from the old Ackie enclosure and just lay it down on top of the new enclosure for this purpose - lol.

      I don't think so. When I use that bowl, I just let them grab roaches right out of it while I hold it. So 10m before that he was on top of the Ackie enclosure picking roaches out of it while I held it for him. He coulda just been watching me closely as I walked away and saw me place it there before I sat down at my computer or he could have just been roaming that way and then smelled it as he got close, who knows. I thought he was coming to see me - lol. They have really good senses though. I've dropped a bunch of roaches inside Ajax enclosure on accident during past feedings, there's probably a half dozen or so roaches in there. On days where I don't feed him, he'll start hunting those lost roaches. It's pretty fun to watch, especially when it's clear they are inside something he can't get into. He'll spend like an hour trying to figure how to pry open the cork tree in his enclosure. It's all sealed inside with foam, there are some small pockets, but nothing Ajax would be able to get into. But it's clear he smells something inside there and it's probably one of these roaches. Every now and then he will find one while digging around in the plants or corners of the enclosure.

      @@TreeMonitorTraining lmao now !! I totally thought you were calling him sexy boy this whole time 😂🤣! So it’s Jaxxy…haha ok mental note ! & He’s been responding to Georgia for the last year & a half. Didn’t wanna confuse the poor fella 🤣🤣 That’s funny…my mom said to call him George as well. I told her that George is a horrible name for a lizard lol !! She then of course suggested calling him Jorge 🤣or Pronouncing George differently…. Georgie. I’m like 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤔😂😂 & that’s pretty funny, I’ve thought the same thing when I watch him walking around….like he owns the place lol 😆 At least he’s confident, right 😏 & you should do a gender reveal video when you find out about the Ackie, that would be hilarious 😆🤣

      @@amysreptileadventures6664 Yeah, you want him thinking he owns the place. If he figures out that you do, then you're just the captor again and he's just inside a larger enclosure.
