Archetype Archive - Speed Characters
Hey all and sorry for those who wanted the ninja! I couldn't in good conscience call this the ninja because of how many I knew were not ninjas, but thankfully, the biggest and best of them got to be discussed in this video. For those who made it to the end, thank you! Hopefully you learned something and enjoyed it, and the new Archetype Tier List section is something you liked hearing about!

Archetype Archive - The Shoto
Просмотров 7 тыс.7 месяцев назад
Today's archetype is the ancestor of all archetypes, the shoto. But for the fact that the very first fighting game character was one of them, the definition for them is pretty rocky and ill-defined. So I'm here to burn some bridges, set some things straight, and make some bold claims on what I think constitutes a Shoto and its playstyle in the modern day. So, I've come back to comics after a pretty long hiatus for certain reasons, and I've just started reading this. I'm currently up to where Batman succubs and grants the 'Last Laugh' protocol. I must admit, I'm really enjoying it, even though I knew many people had issues. I'm just reading it as a sort of elseworlds evil Batman story, and I like seeing how TBWL just shuts down any plan Batman has. It's this constant downward spiral with gorgeous art that I find quite encapsulating. Yeah, he's OP and downright unstoppable, but I see that as a commentary on modern Batman as much as anything. I'm reading it as 'oh, so this is an OP modern Batman? cool, he's going up against another modern OP Batman.' I do have a few issues, I think TBWL's name and appearance are quite goofy, and yeah there's a lot of Batman just knowing stuff, but to be honest, I just chalked it up to some previous lore I wasn't aware of, it didn't bother me. I also don't know a damn thing about James Jr. so that was just something else I rolled with. I can definitely see issues with it, but it's so far and away not the worst comic ever, I think Injustice is worse from what I've read, to be honest. I'm currently just powering through it and find it super fun, it's not a deep book like my favourites, Watchmen or A Serious House on Serious Earth, but again it's like this constant maddening spiral. Maybe it'll ruin itself in the next few issues, but for now I just find it an enjoyable alternate evil Batman universe.

    A shoto is a character with a range of utility/broad specialty classed moves. A projectile, an antiair not necessarily prioritized for it and a moving attack. Sakura, dan, and sean are shotos. Shoto isn't how you play, so ken is still a shoto. You can call him a rushdown, but his projectile makes him a ranger and his anti makes him a grappler.

I also like the dual-axis tier list chart you're working on in at the end of the video. From what I've seen other creators do, I think the 1-axis tier list does better for clickbait, but as far as understanding goes, it gives too many people the wrong Idea, I think theoretical vs practical is really really important, I got clowned on in the comments of the What Makes a Top Tier video for saying Ken is, and likely always will be better than Luke in street fighter 6, due to practicality being naturally ingrained into Kens moveset whereas Luke has to use more guesses per round to win. But even at the time, I stood by it, and I think results show it was pretty resoundingly true.

      Honestly a really hard question, i think id maybe put her on the outskirts of a mixup character. Her neutral is just so unique though, its quite hard to point to other characters who play similarly, but she does, theoretically anyways - kinda analogue something like GGXRD Millia, more mobility than other characters, her kunai act as a pin to both stuff approaches and force mixups, her air to ground is astounding and her gap closing is quite good. The only thing shes missing is a proper version of disc to actually force mixups off any knockdown she gets, not that her knockdown pressure is bad, its just a little simple for a mixup character - but street fighter kinda needs that, if it was overly potent, it would be basically broken. So, i think maybe shes a true mixup character, even if largely by technicality.

    They are called Pixie characters. I've always seen this type of character as glass cannons but instead of maxing out damage they instead max out mobility and frame data. If its the lowest HP character in the game, chances are its a pixie character. I would know. I main the shit out of these characters.

    • @DarumaFGC
      @DarumaFGC 16 дней назад

      Pixie gets used sometimes, but i try make things really obvious for beginners, and I think Pixie works much better for "Pixie grappler" than they do for these guys, not a lot of games have the low hp pool downside to swap for speed, and speed is actually officially used as a tag for chipp in GGST. So I went with that instead for simplicity and clarities sake.

    • @DarumaFGC
      @DarumaFGC 16 дней назад

      Pixie is only used in some circles and is also overlapped with "Pixie grappler" which i think is a far better and more obvious archetype than the regular pixie types. I use archetype titles based on beginners and speed i think is more self evident (low hp isnt necesarrily a requirement) and is used officially as a tag in both blazblue and guilty gear, a few other games too. Its an in-house title for the archetype that devs actually use, while pixies more of a fan-name.

      @DarumaFGC OK, that makes sense. I get how the term isn't exactly intuitive. Thank you for the honest and detailed reply, I just assumed since most of the video shows Chipp, that low health, or at least limited defense (like Valkenhayn) were the most essential parts of a pixie.

    How do you distinguish demons from speed charas? Both usually have high speed, low health, low range and focus on vortexes, mixups and even baiting and whiff punishment. Also tbh I think Tao's more of a speed character more than Valkenheyn. He's a stance/rushdown character imo. Also since you use Chipp and Strider as examples, they actually have semi-decent projectiles, which puts them more in the same camp as Bang and Ibuki for me.

      Its definitely a bit of a spectrum for sure, technically you could umbrella all of these under rushdown and youd technically be right, but theres a lot of factors that i think make you more like one than the other, for example, i think restands are almost always useless for demon characters but basically necessary for speed characters, obviously none of these guys have a demon flip which adds to that. Simultaneously, demon characters have pretty mediocre blockstrings. Whereas speed characters probably have the best block pressure of any archetype. The reason i wouldnt call Valkenhayn a stance character is that theres 2 kinds of stance characters, wincon stances, where entering stance is hard and is your whole goal, or neutral stances, with different purposes that help you either mix the opponent up or pick different effective ranges. Valkenhayns stance is in a weird limbo where it doesnt really fit into either. Like youll see in the clips in the video, on the rare occassion it is used in neutral, its either used to get away from the opponent or at an insanely sharp angle that things like dps would not win out on. His stance adds to his momentum, his blockstrings are longer (but his mix is worse than in human form) and because he both cant block in wolf form and its tied to a resource unlike say, Leo from GG, so his goal isnt really getting wolf form and staying there. Its just an enhancer for when contacts already made with the opponent.

    Loved the video! I've been playing Cammy in SF6 and the... dive... into the topic (I'm sorry haha). I was wondering quite a bit about how to use divekicks and honestly this video was perfect for the ideas. I'm also looking forward to the document and the video(s) you'll put out in the future. Imo a playlist with each of the skills/topics would probably be a little easier to digest and give you more manageable projects to spend more time on, but regardless, great video! Keep up the great work!

      Thank you for the thoughts on the tutorials as well as the kind words! Based on the feedback ive recieved so far, it seems releasing both the reference document id be using as a script as well as individual videos for each chapter seems like what people most want to see, and then i can just compile the chapters into a single larger video after the series is done. Hopefully each individual video is interesting enough by itself and easy enough to follow that people get to grow with the series and by the time they need help to progress further, a new tutorial releases. Thats my goal anyhow

    Why was The Batman Who Laughs even added into Fortnite? His comic was bad, and nobody who plays Fortnite even knows what the DC in DC Comics mean! Was it because his design is cool?

    • @DarumaFGC
      @DarumaFGC 19 дней назад

      If you weren't there for it, Dark Knights Metal was one of DC's biggest marketing pushes ever, ads for it in every comic and full size in every comic store, it was inescapable, it was likely another way to get people to buy the comic series to feature him somewhere comic readers dont necessarily frequent

    AMAM’s are a pretty interesting grouping of moves. This vid got me thinking, what are your thoughts on beast cannon type moves? They appear in plenty of games and seem superior to divekicks to me.

    • @DarumaFGC
      @DarumaFGC 20 дней назад

      I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to with beast cannon, off the top of my head no characters move is called that, if its something like, things like blanka ball and psycho crusher, those are pretty interesting, Though in effect they're not a ton different to things like lariats or straights, since its just using your whole body as a weapon in a straight line, and yeah those kinds of moves are extremely powerful, but if you direct me to what you specifically mean, i'd have a better idea and know how to comment

      @@DarumaFGC in Darkstalkers, Jon Talbain/Gallon has a move called Beast Cannon with which he has an omnidirectional dash attack that can cross up the opponent. Beowulf from Skull Girls and Zeta from Granblue both have a move in this style.

    i personally learn best from seeing things done, I don't play a lot of fighting games (maybe 40 hrs total across strive, sf6, and melee) but i've been able to learn combos and skills better than reading a big doc but I also feel that me among many others can still get value out of something being written if you don't make a long form video, being technically a new player (despite having watched tournaments for like 7-8 years now) when it comes to actual fighting games and not understanding a few of the terms the information dense videos you make are very digestible and I would bet that people with even less experience than me are able to understand them

      Thank you for the insight! I think with regards to this many people seem to digest things through videos better, while I do still have my old tutorials up I think the best way to do things would be to do chapter by chapter as videos and then upload the whole thing as one huge video once the tutorial series is finished, while thats a while away, it seems like the right thing to do

    A video on faint moves would be pretty cool. Basically anything from fake moves like Street Fighter 2 Ryu's quarter circle startbutton fake fireball to Guilty Gear Slayer's forward kick which can be fainted during the startup by holding the kick.

    • @TheAmberFang

      Feints would be cool. Deejay in SF6 is a notable recent example too.

    • @DarumaFGC
      @DarumaFGC 20 дней назад

      It might be more relevant early next year - in Garou - Mark of the Wolves, Feints are a universal mechanic, every character has 2 moves they can feint in neutral and it does a lot for the game, and since City of the Wolves is due to release in April next year its pretty likely universal feints will be something worth a lot of discussion around then! Either way, know that its on my radar.
