Had you bought in 2019 just before Covid lockdowns, it could have been a financial hardship when people weren’t able to travel and rent a vacation home.
Thanks for watching. I’m sure you are right.
Come live in São João de Ver, it's cheaper(an 3 room apartment is 140k euros) and is 20 minutes from Oporto!
Thanks for watching. Looks lovely but we’re happy where we are in Nazaré!
Nazaré is very nice.@@TheUnretirees
I really like your videos! Maybe you can do a video about international schools in Portugal? I am trying to find something but nothing shows up. Maybe it’s time for us to move there and take your advice to heart
We don’t know a lot about schools in Portugal, but there’s an Instagram account called @lisbonfamilylife that might be helpful. She has school-age kids and I think she has some content about schools. Hope this helps!
Is purchasing property a requirement for a D7 visa?
Thanks for watching…and no, purchasing a property is not a requirement. The requirement is that you have a place to live…so that can be a purchase or a lease to rent.
Love your videos! Especially because we live in NY close to border of CT and thinking to move to Portugal.
Thanks for watching and we were almost neighbors!! Lots of things to like about Portugal, for sure!
So it’s an initial investment of 15,000 non refundable dollars per person?
Thanks for watching and once you have your AIMA meeting you don’t need to keep that money in there, so you can spend it down or transfer it out.
There is one thing you didn't mention, and it's something I've always wondered about: As Americans, when you move to Europe, don't you feel uncomfortable with the cramped living environment? As far as I know, the per capita living area in Europe is much much much smaller than that in the United States, and those houses are old and dilapidated.
Thanks for watching and it all depends on what and where you buy. It is true that you can live in a small, run down property. You can also live in a brand-new build with space. There is a huge range of property styles and prices here…just like in the U.S. The only place that we’ve needed to compromise in space has been in our car. US style SUVs are not a thing here.
Excellent videos. We are retired educators who thoroughly appreciated our time last year helping a school open in Lviv, then staying in Krakow for 6 weeks, followed by a month in Tallinn. Now we want to sell our Portland condo and move to Europe. Your videos have helped me reexamine Portugal as a preferred destination over France, Italy, and Spain. Thank you. Dean & Cindy
Thanks for watching, Dean & Cindy! We love it here but it was a close call over Spain, France and Italy. Lots of great things about living in any of these countries!! Best of luck!
Agree with your assessment of these areas but I was surprised that you don’t include Aveiro.
We love Aveiro, but there’s some debate about whether that’s considered Silver Coast or more greater Porto area. That’s the only reason we didn’t include it.
How far out (days/weeks) was the appointment with AIMA that you were assigned from when you received your VISA? I’m wondering if they try to give you a bit of time before you have to rush out of the US and arrive in Portugal for that appointment? Thanks!
It was about five weeks after approvals for each of us.
@ thanks! So you really need to be ready to go!
What's wrong with just staying for 90 days
Nothing is wrong with staying for 90 days if that’s what you want to do. Thanks for watching!
All sounds like NOT fun.
Thanks for watching. Making extra money is not for everyone, for sure.
Jeez! You 2 must be dripping with cash! These costs total more than I've earned in 10 years! The world sucks.
Not so much. It was more expensive than we expected for sure! Thanks for watching.
For those who don't already own a home in Portugal (glad you guys did and were able to move your five-year plan forward : - ), it's wise to plan for extra costs meeting the proof of a place to live requirement. Many who've been through the process report being told a one-year official lease is required at the initial application appointment if renting, and some have been rejected for not having that. So it's important to budget for double rent/mortgage in Portugal AND your country of origin OR for the cost of flying back and possibly having to pay for hotels or short-term rentals near whatever VFS office you're assigned to. Especially given the changes in policy in Portugal recently that suggest efforts to lessen immigration (e.g. elimination of the 10% tax rate for ten years) PLUS the possible increase in applications from the United States post-election, I personally would also plan for a worst-case scenario of NOT being approved for residency and potentially having to pay the full year of a lease I can only legally use for three months on a tourist visa. : - ( Hopefully, though, a landlord would take pity in that case.
Thanks for watching and for your thoughts. We know of people who have leased for one-year in their visa process and others who were able to use a short-term rental with a less than one-year "lease". But it does seem that different offices can have different policies or interpretations.
Rent for a year in big city and find your next more permanent place during the year. Rent cars when you need one. Keep it simple. Keep airplane trips back and forth minimal. Everything takes time and so relax! Have fun and a toast for the adventure!
Thanks for watching and for a lot of people that makes sense! We're not disappointed we did it the way we did, but it's not the best for everyone.
Were you close to a VFS location? It doesn’t really seem practical to go to one multiple times for most. one of the things we found in San Francisco is that we had to pay on site with a money order with the amount determined at that time. So, we had to go to a post office and return with a money order. Another glitch that we ran into is that my wife’s sealed FBI envelope when opened contained a document said that her fingerprints were not accepted. We have no knowledge that this would be the case. They did make an exception and allow us to mail a new FBI document to them. We did this and we are waiting and waiting.
Thanks for watching. Yes, we were near the NYC office so we did have the opportunity to go multiple times. It really is odd to me that different VFS offices can have different policies and practices, but they do. Glad you were able to resubmit the FBI report and best of luck on the result….hopefully soon!
This is by far the most comprehensive video on acquiring a Portuguese visa. I will be retiring there in 2025, and this information will really help even though I have a friend whose wife is an immigration lawyer. Well done, and thank you!
Thanks for watching and your kind words!
First time watching you guys. RUclips can be fun indeed. Remember Angry Birds? Once upon a time a super popular video game. Thought I was one of the only ones still playing 😄so I started a channel. Retro-style you know 🧓and just for the fun of it. Never thought that 100+ would be so kind as to subscribe. Doubt I will ever reach the magic 1000 subs, hey - surprises do happen, right? 😉🤞
Thanks for watching and I bet there are 1000+ people who still love to play Angry Birds! Best of luck and have fun!
Great video 👍. Can you do a video on how Portugal handle capital gain and dividend tax? I am setting up a portfolio to withdraw tax free ~120k (29k interest income + 94k dividend/capital gain with 29k standard deduction) income in USA. I am trying to figure out how Portugal is going to tax my foreign income since NHR scheme is ended.
Thanks for watching and I suggest you chat with a professional who knows about Portuguese and U.S. tax laws. We talked with FreshIP, a firm here in Portugal with a lot of expat clients, to help us understand the tax implications. Thanks!
Love your content!! My wife and I are considering retiring early and moving to Portugal. We’ve been on scouting trips already (Silver Coast and Algarve) and we also would like to start a RUclips! While I’m binging your videos, Do you have anything that speaks to the equipment that you use to start your RUclips channel?
Thanks for watching and on the description for the most recent video we lay out our equipment. Nothing crazy. Best of luck to you!
@@TheUnretireesthanks for the reply. Okay, sounds like I have more watch hours for you coming up! Blessings.
My hubby and I have been watching your very informative videos and are grateful to you. We are planning to move when he retires. I am already retired and working a little part time. We have researched and researched and I have taken lots of notes. We also sat in a 2 hour zoom meeting with Expats FB Group Friday and learned a lot. We have already booked a 2 week visit to Portugal in April and plan to check out the places we have narrowed down. We are staying 14 days and 10 of those days we have rented a car. We want to get a feel and see what housing is like etc. How far would you say we would need to start the application process within the US.
Thanks for watching. Six or seven months from your desired move date is probably best to start the process.
Dawn and Matt, Fantastic video! You guys are truly the best. Your content is always meaningful and helpful, unlike many other half-baked videos out there. I’ve watched over a dozen creators covering similar topics about Portugal, and you stand out by far. I’m really looking forward to your course and future videos, especially for those of us planning to move. Keep up the honest and great work! I was wondering if you could recommend cities in the Silver Coast area with a similar cost of living to the one you mentioned with 15,000 inhabitants around same size), located about 30 to 45 minutes from a more larger city. I’m particularly interested in places that offer new houses or apartments developed from 2015 onwards. Also, could you suggest any reliable real estate agents or brokers who could provide more information? Thanks again for all your help!
Thanks for watching! There are several cities that meet that criteria. We're in Nazaré, but just a bit north is Marina Grande, which is about 15 minutes away from Leiria. Alcobaça is just to the east of us and about the same distance away from Leiria or Caldas da Rainha. Headed south a bit, there is Mafra (which is probably 30 minutes from Lisbon). Ericeira, right on the coast, is probably 40 minutes from Lisbon as well. There are places north around Coimbra and Porto, but we're less familiar...and there are places south of Lisbon, but again we're just less familiar.
I have 2 pugs. Any cost estimates?
Thanks for watching! It all depends on the route you take to get your pups to PT. If you’re able to put each in a carrier that fits under an airplane seat, then it is so much easier - it’s then probably less than five hundred each for the exams, chip and certification stuff. If they don’t fit under the airplane seat, then you’re either buying crates and tickets for them to be in luggage or cargo and that’s more…we spent $150 for the crate and $400 to get the dog in luggage. Then there is the shared private option but that’s running into $10k range. Best of luck!
I’m for the US and I’m interested in more information on the process of moving your dog. How specifically did they get there? I’m not a fan of putting my pet in a cargo hold on a plane and she’s too big to be allowed in the plane. Thanks in advance
Thanks for watching and we have a whole video on moving a pet from the US to Portugal. We did put our dog in the luggage hold and it worked well for us, but check out the video as we go into the various options. ruclips.net/video/8sa023cvXsQ/видео.html
Thank you
Couple??? 's When in this process did you change your drivers license over? And what was THAT process. I have been looking into this compared to Spain and seems easier in Portugal What if you're a couple but only I'm planning the move due to my husband's health issues. Would the same financial documents for one of us be adequate would you think or would it have to be separated before the process even starts. All our pensions go into a joint account that we set up years ago that we transfer around to other accounts. Do all the accounts have to be submitted??? Can I even start this process alone without my husband? I would be traveling back and forth. Do I have to have a rental for a year at up before the nif and bank account? Thanks for the chance to ask your opinion😊
Thanks for watching! If you're under 60, you don't need to change your license over until it expires in the US. If you're over 60, there is a timeline but it seems a little "flexible" since it depends on getting a public health care number which can take many months (we're still waiting for ours). But over 60 you need a doctor to give you an exam and determine you are fit to drive, and then submit paperwork and wait. We haven't done it yet. For documents, we would guess that if only you are moving that you need to present documents for you -- and joint account US bank/broker statements would be ok. You really only need to submit account information up to the point where you can demonstrate you have assets. No need to show them all the millions :). And, sure, you can move with or without your spouse and have only one go through the visa/residency process. You'd want to get a NIF first because that is required to do anything. Most people have said that the visa requirement for a proof of a place to live is a one-year lease, but others have had success with shorter leases. Best of luck to you!
@TheUnretirees ... the license (I'm 68🇨🇦) is better than Spain that's for sure. Interesting you bought a car without a Portuguese license??? How onerous was getting insurance then? I got an international one last year (for car rental in Spain) but never did rent one. But that's just a permit. Thanks for the info
I’m in the beginning planning stages and trying to pinpoint an area to live. I’m less interested in a city dwelling life but I’d like to be in a convenient distance (<30 min drive) from a city, while also having the land for having chickens and maybe a couple goats. Do you have any suggestions on where to start looking?
Thanks for watching and part of it depends on what you call a city, lol. For us, we live in a city of 15,000 and within 30 minutes there is a city with about 30,000 people and another with more than 100,000. And between here and there you can find places with land and chickens and goats. But if you define a city as 25,000 people, there is a ton of places that are within 30 minutes with space. If you're looking at a bigger city, you're looking near Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra and a handful of others (like Leiria for us) -- but still lots of options where chickens and goats can roam! best of luck!
@@TheUnretireesthank you so much! This gives me the perspective I needed.
Good luck with VFS. Their website is completely broken. We have found it impossible o even log in net alone get to the viewing appointments phase.
We started our You Tube Channel in August of this year and posted our first video in september. We have built up nearly 7,000 subscribers but still looking to get that video that will monetized our channel. Your tips help and i will look at our titles and thumbnails ,and the way we present the videos and we are both in our mid 60s.
Thanks for watching...maybe we've already responded, but congratulations on 7000 subscribers! That's amazing! The watch hours will come, just keep plugging along, and you never know what video is going to suddenly do well. But even without a "viral" video, you'll get there! Best of luck!
@@TheUnretirees Thank you for the nice comments. Its a mine field with the so call experts on You Tube who tell you that this software is better for keyword research never who to trust.
Really helpful content, thank you for your efforts.
Thanks so much and thanks for watching!
Compare lower taxed state with no state income tax versus Portugal please.
Thanks for watching. For sure, if you’re in a zero tax state, the taxes you would pay less on income…but there may be other higher taxes like property or sales taxes. But it’s probably still lower than California in total taxes. But the low property taxes, low health care costs and - for most people - a lower cost of living make a big difference. Each situation is different and we can’t make videos for everyone, but using the web to pull similar data for your area/state can where you are considering is relatively easy to do. Best of luck!
interesting !!

Thank you for this extremely informative video! My spouse and I are about your age, and we've been looking into health insurance, but it's so expensive! I’m currently preparing for my move to Portugal, and I’m so glad to have discovered you! I look forward to following your inspiring journey.
Thanks so much for watching and your kind words. Hoping your move goes smoothly!
Typical Americans. Think they can wave dollars and just turn up. You have just proved you are a nation of morons. You are not ex-pats : you are immigrants. There WILL be a backlash. There have been far too many Americans turning up here in Europe since 2016. And many have not been making themselves welcome, particularly in the large cities. They are notorious at being extremely bad at assimilating. There is growing anti-American feeling so expect changes in the rules. If you are FLEEING the orange bufoon, then leave your "exceptionalism" at home.
Great video, guys. Thanks. As someone considering a move to the Silver Coast, I am now much more aware of the costs. I'm also interested in the BnB side of things. Have you done a video breaking down the rules and regulations about getting into BnBs? On another note, I enjoyed your video on making money with RUclips. I'm also a RUclipsr with nearly 16K subscribers. But I make most of my income from sidelines like Patreon. In fact, Patreon brings in 10 times the amount I make on YT. Have you tried Patreon? -Mike
Thanks for watching and we haven’t tried Patreon…something to look into for sure. As for BnBs, any new short-term rental needs to get a license from the local municipality. Generally, unless you are in Porto, Lisbon or the Algarve, you are likely to get a license but it’s not guaranteed. You just apply and if rejected you can always do long-term rental (more than 30 days). We suggest contacting the municipality before making an offer on a place to get more info on the process and the likelihood of getting the license. Hire a translator if you need to for that conversation to make sure you don’t end up buying a place that can’t do what you want it to do. Best of luck!!
@ Thanks very much! I will do that. Keep on making interesting videos!
What is the right age for moving abroad? We are making plans to move to Italy. I am 52 American born (Italian ancestry). She is Russian and 44 (US Green Card). I went to University in Bologna. We plan to move to Sicily.
Well, there isn’t a right age but there are certain restrictions for residency applications that differ country by country. For example, coming to Portugal, you need to demonstrate you have sustainable income from other countries and/or sufficient assets that you won’t need to work and take a job here. However, since you’re considering citizenship in Italy, there likely are no financial restrictions. But if you’re wanting to move abroad, then you should do it as quickly as you can manage…no one is guaranteed a long life and too many people miss out on things they “always wanted” to do but didn’t get around to. Best of luck!
I am American with Ancestry in Italy (Sicily). Born in the USA. My wife is Russian (Green Card). We are located in Washington DC. I am determined to move to Italy (even before the election). I have successfully convinced her to move with me. I had no idea about the duel passport. I told her that it will be a lot of research and hard work. We have a nice place in DC, but if she changes her mind, I will be going solo.
Thanks for watching. Since you’re in DC, you can go to the Italian Embassy to understand the process. There are some requirements regarding citizenship of your lineage, and documents you’ll need, but they could make sure you get started correctly. Best of luck to you!
Because I am 67, waiting for ten years isn't an option. What countries let one live there the longest on a guest visa?
Thanks for watching, and you can become a resident without becoming a citizen in most countries as long as you want. In Portugal, for example, after five years we could choose just to renew our residency instead of applying for citizenship. Best of luck!
@TheUnretirees Thank you!
Please make a video on cost of living breakdown.
Thanks for watching and we did a cost of living review about a month ago.
Love watching your videos!! We are anticipating a move to the Silver Coast in Sept. 2025. Is there an email address I can contact you on? I'd love a recommendation of who you would use for as an immigration attorney. Thank you soo much for all the great content. We will be there in April any chance of meeting up?
Thanks for watching! You can reach us at hello@theunretirees.com. In terms of an immigration attorney, we did not use one-and you may not either. If you’re from the US, there is a Facebook group called Americans & FriendsPT that has detailed files on many things including getting a visa as well as a helpful community.
You never mentioned the required deposit for Portugal. Either $250-$500,000?
Thanks for watching. If you are moving to Portugal in a D-7 visa (retirement visa) there is an amount you need to put into an Portuguese bank account-it’s your money but it needs to be in the account and we talk about that in this video. The $250-500,000 only comes into play if you are trying to gain residency thru the golden visa program. If you’re doing a D7, it doesn’t apply. Thanks!
Thanks for being transparent about YT income. There’s people saying “we make money on RUclips“ but never talk about how much it is. So thank you and I appreciate your honesty and sharing.
Thanks for watching and your kind words.
Thx for the info. 😊 Q: the golden Visa would be for one person… Not the couple together? Right?
Maybe it’s different in other countries but in Portugal, family members (spouse and dependents) are included in the primary person’s application without needing to increase the investment.
We noticed our small 2 bed apartment gets rented by singles mostly
Really? Curious what part of Portugal you’re in?
Thank you for this video.. I appreciate the section related to transporting a pet. Thank you
Thanks for watching! We love having our dog here...but it was a process :).
Isn't it mandatory to take Portuguese language classes too ?
Portuguese language classes aren’t required for residency but you do need to pass a language test if/when you apply for citizenship. Thanks for watching!
When you say $400 for health care and $375 for visa, are they PER PERSON or for both of you
Thanks for watching. Health Care runs about $400 for both of us combined. The visa costs were also combined -- about $120 to set the appointment with VFS and then the rest was charged at the VFS appointment.
