    Go to TOMAR, a lovely town, plenty of history. It was the capital of the templars, knights and monks from the medieval times. It is not far from Nazaré. It is the home town of my family. You may visit the castle, the convent of Christ, world UNESCO heritage. Or go around the old and narrow streets. You will love it!

    As a woodworker and guitar builder, im having a hard time find good quality, but affordable tools. There is no Woodworker's Warehouse, Woodcraft Store, Harbor Freight, etc. And the quality of appliances, etc, is inferior. You gotten love their "Easy Bake" ovens. Thanks for watching. I’m sure there are some places with HOA’s but they don’t seem common. We are not in one. Also, property taxes run about 0.2%-0.3% of assessed value - about 1/10th of what we paid in the U.S. Thanks for watching!

    Oh good, that’s my fear too, will I be bored. I need things to do. I want to catch a flight to explore London at some point. But I love hearing about the many, many things to do in Portugal,the history & old towns are on my list already to explore. I am so excited listening to yous. I love your matching hair too 😂. Mine is about the same. I used to think was I was real young, I don’t want gray hair, as I got older I was hoping for white hair, I love love white hair, but next I love silver hair. I got silver & a tiny of white, it’s different shades like yours. You guys rock your hair. Nice styles. I hope I run into to you guys over there one day. Thanks for another informative video.

    I’m glad I spent the last 3 summers just camping out in all the best parks, letchworth, Robert tremen, Watkins glen, where a bear poked his nose in my tent screen window around 5a.m. as I was stirring in my tent. He just paused for a few moments & rambled on. What a thrill. But I lay there trembling for a bit after s/he left. 😅. New York State has some gorgeous forests & so many beautiful waterfalls. Omg. I was going to explore the Catskills next, but I am thrilled to hear & see the equally gorgeous places in Portugal so I will be bringing my most expensive gear with me. It’ll be tricky but we will see.

    Yes, art supplies are ridiculous here. Yes, tipping here is a huge thorn in my side. I have no problem with it save for the corporations getting away with paying their wait staff a respectable wage & putting it us to fill in for them. It irks me to no end. & the resentment it causes. It destroys the whole experience for me. I’m struggling but expected to give these greedy corporations bigger profits. Forgive me my negativity today, I’m tense about Inauguration Day tomorrow. Super stressed. I cannot wait to get out of here for a million reasons.

    I researched beach communities on the east coast a couple years ago but there were none in my income bracket. I am so ecstatic to be relocating to Portugal. I am from the capital district in New York State, & have been to the city many times. I love it & it was a bit of a bumpy culture shock ride from Troy, ny to there. But I’ve grown to love it more each time I go down & explore it. I’m hoping I can make one more visit before I leave for good. I love hearing your experiences of places I’ve been & plan to go.

    3 trips that turned into scouting trips completely unintentionally /22 Azores /23 the Algarve /24Costa del Sol Portugal and Spain just get inside you and won't leave. It's calling all the time to come back. I'm dithering on the eastern Algarve or somewhere between Malaga and Nerja, Costa Del Sol. My first choice would be Spain really, but everyone is moving there. Water shortage, electricity rates, too many tourists. ... But the food is just amazing, the availability is great. The incredible architecture & history just blows me away. The place is covered in Olive Groves, oranges & lemons. To be close to Ronda(an amazing experiences walking all the pathways and cliffs), caminito del Ray (I'd do that often), Morocco, Gibraltar, Cadiz. All avail without a car. Portugal seems a generation behind in public transit/trains. You really need a car. Benefit is Portugal is more affordable, slower pace IMO. Spain requires a road test for license either standard or automatic not both. Portugal easier to just transfer. At 68 can't see myself doing a road test in Spanish... Yikes My wants and needs??? *Walkability *Bike paths everywhere *Marina to view off the deck preferably with a nightly sunset to WOW me every night *Little to no rain *300+days of sun *Lots of green space. *Golf We stayed at the marina in Albufeira. It was just beautiful every nite. But need a car. Wasnt impressed with old town at all. Drive from Sagres to Villa Real' is easy. The caves, the hikes, beaches. It was all incredible. But except for the marina district. Mehhhh to Albufeira. It's a great central location just have to avoid the tourist trap old town. And this was in March for all three trips. Wonder about Villa Real' or Ayamonte. We intended to get to Villa Real' one day but didn't make the right turn and ended up in Spain unintentionally. So when in Spain... Walk around. It was Sunday, everything was closed. Did alot of window shopping... Ended up at Ikea in the drive back just to see how different it was. Often wondered about new builds in Villa Real'. There's a foot ferry between them on the River. Maybe that's the 2025trip? Live in Villa Real', eat & shop in Ayamonte? ...Sucks to have to rent a car though. When i come back in May or September I'll be a sole traveler for the first time in Europe. See how that goes.

    Wow. Head scratcher. My alternative advice. No scouting trips, no transaction trips. Don't ship anything over. Don't sell your house but you may want to sell your car(s) but not quite yet. Turn your house into a BNB so it can earn for you. Keep all your furniture, etc. Don't burn bridges. You might want to return. Move with a suitcase. Many places in Europe are already furnished. Rent one. Don't buy. Now acclimate yourself to the country, take day trips to different parts of the country at different times of year. All you need for the D7 Visa is a one year lease. You can easily get a certificate to teach English. There are countries in the EU who will accept Americans and process the visa for you. There's more than one way to skin a cat. By doing this you are free to leave at any time, have no huge sunken cost and can more effectively find that ideal spot. This isn't a transaction, it's a lifestyle that you're searching for.

    So glad I came across your RUclips channel. I've subscribed for more valuable tips. We are currently living in Upstate New York and dreaming of traveling to Portugal for a scouting trip so this video was incredibly helpful. One important consideration on my "list" is the ease of integrating as an English speaker. Many do not realize that Spanish is not the native language there and, as a foreigner, it's important to embrace learning the language to thrive there. At 66 yo, I am not sure if my brain can make the switch easily so we are looking for an area in Portugal that has a high English language capacity. Certainly larger cities, such as Lisbon, are an option but not sure we want a big city. Braga seems a good option so we have listed this city as an option for our scouting trip but our real wish is to be near the sea. Again...thanks so much for the time and effort in making these videos.

    • @TheUnretirees
      @TheUnretirees 5 дней назад

      Thanks for watching! One of the surprises for us is how most people here speak English. We are taking Portuguese language lessons and hope to be conversational (we are not yet) but it hasn’t been a problem at all in any area that we have visited. Best of luck on your planning!

The new program is called the IFICI. Again, worth talking with a pro.

    I follow your channel and watch your videos frequently, not because I want to move to Portugal, in fact I moved from Brazil to the USA, but because I want to learn from your venture on RUclips. I would like to know if you hired a company to structure the course or if you did everything yourself, in which case which program did you use? Also, do you edit your own videos? Thanks for the great quality content.

      Thanks for watching. We write, film and edit our videos ourselves and the course is on a platform called Kajabi to deliver it. I hope that helps!

    Thanks, very helpful for us. We are planning on making the move in about 3 years and we’re starting to do our homework now. One small observation on your pronunciation of Nazare, the third syllable is not “ray”. It’s reh. It sounds painfully gringo when you stretch out the last syllable. Besides that, you guys rock!

    I know someone who is from Texas that moved to Northern California that mentioned "it's not home". So, moving abroad, " can u make it home".

    • @TheUnretirees
      @TheUnretirees 6 дней назад

      Thanks for watching and there’s an aspect of “home” that for most people is about where they are from. I (Matt) grew up near Detroit but haven’t lived there since graduating college, but there is an element of “home” that it has that isn’t filled with anyplace else. But every place I’ve lived since had a sense of home to it anyway with friends made and family relationships growing. It’s a different kind of home that the home you grew up in … but it’s still good - at least it has been for me!

    Hello Matt and Dawn, thanks for the informative video again. Can't wait to visit Silver Coast (Coimbra, Leiria and Lisbon area) this coming week from Phoenix! Loved your video.

      Thanks so much for watching! You’ll get to experience our winter, which isn’t bad but probably a little cooler than Phoenix. We were just in Lisbon this past weekend and we love going to Coimbra. Leiria is the city closest to us and it seems that we’re there on errands, lol. We need to sightsee there - the castle in Leiria looks very cool. Enjoy your travels!

    good, a timely go over for the new year. i have a notebook & have been taking all kinds of notes in prep for my life changing adventure. i just moved from a pretty large city-albany, ny to a rural town an hour west. i love exploring & love, love the back roads. it took a bit of time, but i know or am really familiar with the alternative routes to all my important places. i cannot wait to explore the back roads of portugal. i hope i get the hang of the new traffic rules quickly. i would love to purchase a 60's vw bug. i didn't get my license until i was 56 years old in 2007. i have a couple cars i would love to drive from my 70's teenage years.

    Are the Portuguese still welcoming of foreign tourists and immigrants? I've heard conflicting stories, but several that have said they want foreigners to leave and are less and less welcoming of visitors in general. Is this true? I've heard the same thing about other countries across southern Europe. Just tired of all the congestion and the effects of tourists and immigrants on housing costs and cost of living in general.

    When you mentioned the 34 inches of rain annually at the north Silver Coast as a negative, I was inspired to look up the annual average rainfall for my current location in Knoxville, TN. It ranges from 48-51 inches, approximately. I don’t feel annoyed by this amount of rain, so 34 inches wouldn’t seem like too much for me. I formerly lived in California and got tired of how dry that state can be.

      Thanks for watching! The rain isn’t bad, but it all comes in a 3-4 month period. This year, though, it’s been below average rain where we live - more sunny days!!
