Woodturning | a punky walnut shop stool
When woodworking with hand tools it's quite common to have to bend over the workbench or kneel down in front of it for the more precise work. I have been blessed with a bad back in my late 30s and now I have bad knees (yes, both of them) in my mid 40s. It is high time I built a shop stool. Luckily I have a slab of punky walnut perfect for the job. The only question is : will it hold my weight?

Woodworking | a Stickley style buffet part 4: Drawers, Drawers everywhere, and all the boards...
In this segment, I handcut dovetails on the drawers, tongues and grooves to slide the drawer bottoms in.
Woodturning | an off-centered maple bowl
Today I turn an off-centered bowl from a blank of maple that's been sitting for ages in my workshop. As it isn't the best looking piece of maple, staining and texturing are on the table. The off-centered rim reminds me of a moon crescent, so a dark moon it is.
Woodturning | a stickley style buffet part 3 : dividers and epoxy drawers
In this section, I add blackwood plugs to the legs, I glue up the frame, I dovetail and glue the horizontal and vertical dividers. I tackle the layout for the drawer fronts, I select and cut a couple of wild grain boards with bark inclusion that I intend to keep. I fill the voids with black tainted epoxy - it's actually my first epoxy pour, fingers crossed!!! Dans cette partie, j'insère des pet...
Woodturning | a blackwood hanko stamp handle
I took an uncommon order for a hanko stamp handle. The chosen woods are African blackwood, padouk and claro walnut. The customer will make the rubber stamp himself with his own logo. Blackwood is incredibly hard to turn but so rewarding when you apply the finish.
Woodworking | a Stickley style buffet part 2: frame
This is part 2 of the Stickley style buffet project where I glue the side panels to the legs, then I mortice the arched lower rails and dovetail the upper rails.
Woodturning | a two tone sequoia vase
I turn a two tone sequoia vase from a branch. This is the first time I work with sequoia wood or redwood and I find that the contrast between heartwood and sapwood is absolutely stunning. So in this video I concentrate more on colours than shape. The wood is a little brittle but hard enough to turn well with caution and the grain is amazing. Now I'm not sure that I want to sell it... ;) Je tour...
Woodworking | a Stickley style buffet part 1: legs
Here's a woodworking project for my living/dining room: you can call it a chest, a high chest or a sideboard, I chose 'buffet' because it sounds funny in French and in English. I love Arts & Crafts furniture, I've already made a 'Prairie' sofa, a mission coffee table and a Morris chair, so I think it will fit nicely. I don't follow any plan, I just build it as I go. Risky? Right! Voici la const...
Woodturning | a big walnut bowl
This is a twice turned walnut bowl : it was turned wet and left to dry for a year, then turned a second time to get it perfectly round. It is 28cm in diameter and 12cm high. It isn't that big overall but it was the biggest walnut trunk I had seen in my area. The spalting is always a nice bonus.
Woodturning | the spalted grails
I turned two cups from a spalted piece of hornbeam wood. I glued a walnut foot on one and a sipo foot on the other to add contrast and size. They are approximately 12cm in diameter and 9cm high.
Woodturning | a cherry bowl with turquoise milliput
I turn a small cherry bowl with a turquoise milliput inlaid rim. This is my first project with Milliput : Milliput is an epoxy putty. Though the putty is quite easy to work, I'm not happy with the result: the inlay is cloudy, dusty and way too mat. The cherry blank isn't top of the shelf either.
Woodturning and shaping a cubist vessel
I turned a spalted beech and sipo vessel that recalls the triangular shape of human characters in Cubist paintings, an exclamation mark that pinpoints the irony of our kind : headless monsters thriving on hope and ruin. I kept the irregularities of the piece to give it a more organic than a geometric feel. The hole is 120mm deep and 35mm wide.
Pen turning | a segmented helix pen (the hard way)
I turned a segmented helix pen the hard way!!! I used offcuts from a dizzy bowl I made a couple of years ago. I selected the padouk-walnut-cherry parts for this 7mm slimline pen. I also cut some purpleheart-oak-pear parts for a later pen. The "hard way" is that the pieces are cross grain and not from a laminated pen blank. The padouk did "bleed" over the cherry creating an interesting fade. J'a...
Woodturning a cherry vase inspired by Gaudi
I turned a cherry vase in the shape of Gaudi's gothic arch in Palau Güell and reproduced the orange and gold wall and ceiling around the fireplace in Casa Battlo, then I added a ribbon to the colours of the Esteleda.
Woodturning | oak bowl with turquoise inlay

I turned an oak bowl with turquoise inlay on the rim, it's about 18cm in diameter and 8,5cm high, I used thin CA glue on the crushed stone inlay.

Man, with the wood as punky/rotten as you say, I hope it is strong enough to last.

Great size. I like some of the bigger pieces. Have you ever considered a double bowl? A smaller bowl in center of the larger. Retaining the details and grain of the wood. I enjoyed the video.

@@ardwoodcreations I used to draw, some painting, wood carving, and other arts. I studied under Monta Philpot Black. Many years ago. I had to go back to work and put my art down. Now disabled and struggling, I'm trying to pick it back up. Now the pieces I've done lately, just to get a feel for my pencil again, I keep giving away for kindness from others. 😌 I've always been good with my hands and have a good eye for flow and lines. I really like abstract designs in the wood. Accents grains creates a flow of lines. Keeps eye on (in) subject. Sometimes it takes a bit of hand work for the shapes. Good energy🏞️
