GCR Winter Gala final day Swithland Sunday 28 1 24

The final day of the GCR Winter Gala was bright and sunny and there was a constant stream of trains passing through Swithland sidings between Rothley and Quorn Stations. Unusually for this location there were no other photographers by the lineside so the railway look just as it would have done in the 1950s.

    So is it still mandatory to put the "not to be moved" sign on the engine when being cleaned up?

    • @andybennett5570
      @andybennett5570 Месяц назад

      Yes it is a mandatory requirement and the only person authorised to remove the warning sign is the person who set the sign although there are arrangements to deal with the situation where the person who set the sign becomes unavailable. Part of the preparation of the locomotive will involve going underneath as shown in the film and the "not to be moved " sign becomes even more critical to the safety of the staff preparing the engine.

    It's interesting to see that instead of the speedometer there is just a sign saying "Max speed 25mph". I guess they're judging their speed by feel as they used to do back in steam days? I thought they would be required to have a speedo these days.

    • @andybennett5570
      @andybennett5570 2 месяца назад

      You are correct in your observation. All passenger trains on the GCR, and other heritage railways, are limited to 25 mph (there are a few exceptions but that's another story) but it tends to be the larger express locomotives that were (and are) fitted with speedometers. Experienced crews are very good at gauging the trains speed by experience / intuition. Since the film was made all trains now carry GPS so that the speed can also be monitored by the train guard.

    16:27 What does the guy say there?!

    • @andybennett5570
      @andybennett5570 6 месяцев назад

      The "guy" is actually the train guard who is responsible for the safety of the train and its passengers. He has checked that all the carriage doors are closed and secured and that the departure time (as per the train timetable) has arrived and indicates this to the locomotive crew by showing a green flag - usually waved vigorously - and shouting the words "Right Away". This is the railwayman's officially recognised term to give the locomotive crew permission to start the train away from the platform. Without the guards permission the train would not be allowed to move and in this context the guard has seniority over the footplate crew (the driver and fireman).

    (Number 2 pump seems to be running slow, why's that?) It must have been amazing being a designing Engineer in those days, inventing as you went, making things never made before. All the compromises and all the advantages, a babbitt bearing will work, a fiber packing will work, an oil pot will work...if you have world class machining, even of parts like these, huge, ungainly, and complex because of the state of the technology at the time. No CNC, just men with calipers and fine sand paper and really good brains working with lathes and milling machines. I suspect the designing Engineers would be in grease up to their armpits, just like the operating Engineers, to keep these mighty beasts running. It would be like stepping into a whole new dimension of thought. Good on you all for keeping these pieces of art running.

    • @andybennett5570
      @andybennett5570 Год назад

      I wasn't directly involved in the running of the engines but am aware that providing enough steam was a key issue. The usual on-site boiler is only sufficient to provide steam to run two engines but even then its a challenge to keep them both turning over for lengthy periods of time. For this special event an additional mobile steam generator was hired in to provide sufficient steam for all four engines to be run simultaneously. Even then the speed of the engines had to be held back to avoid over-stretching the available supply so none of the engines were turning an anything like the rate that would have been the case when the pumping station was active. I believe that even then not all four engines would be running at the same time.

    My Father was a Fireman and Driver in the days of L.N.E.R.& B.R. At West Auckland Shed (51F). In those days the Fireman wouldn’t be responsible for lighting the fire and raising steam. That would have already been done by the Steam Raiser, before the fireman and driver came on duty. In preservation everything is done by the fireman.

    • @andybennett5570
      @andybennett5570 Год назад

      Thanks for your contribution Alan. You are of course correct about the role of the steam-raiser in the pre-1968 days when steam traction was still in everyday use. In the present "preserved steam" era locomotive cleaners will often assist with lighting up locomotives as part of their training for footplate work. In the film I was the allocated cleaner for the day so did assist David (the fireman) in preparing the locomotive but as I was also filming he did much of the work!

    • @andybennett5570
      @andybennett5570 Год назад

      I'm not sure if it could be called "modern" but the on-site boiler is gas-fired and was relocated to Abbey Pumping Station from the public swimming baths at Leicester's Vestry Street pool. For the special event which took place in 2014, when all four beam engines were steamed simultaneously, a large lorry carrying a portable boiler was hired in to supplement the on-site boiler to provide enough steam to power all the engines.
