Never thought I'd say this as I've never had much success with velour but I think the velour was the best! Maybe I'll dig mine out from the back of the cupboard and give it another go😊

Hello Emily. I have been watching your videos for several years teaching myself how to use soft pastels. I have been on this art journey for several years now and have got to the stage I can do my own compositions now. The one attribute you have taught me was patience. Taking my time and taking care with each pencil stroke. I recently did a painting of a kingfisher coming out of the water myself, for a gift to friends who are extremely dear to me. how do you pre-sketch with the photo before you use the pencils?

I love them both equally, but for different reasons!! The velour version is so painterly and soft, and the pastel mat one more photorealistic, I think. I'm excited to try the velour--already have some on order! Thanks for sharing!

I wish I could aquire your talent overnight 😢 I am an oil landscape painter, but was just asked by a dear friend to draw her dog that just passed. I said I’d give it a go, but I’m so afraid I’ll fail. Can you give me any advice? I can draw, but I’ve never drawn a pet dog….

Thanks for sharing Emily, very generous advice and definitely helpful.

I only use Velour paper and my results are fast and beautiful using PanPastels for my underpainting, then pastel pencils including Derwent and Faber Castell and I use NuPastel by Prismacolor for the super bold and bright colors (the black and the white is amazing) or for super fine lines. Nothing else compares to the results I get using this combination.

Ah that’s why I thought velour paper wasn’t for me. I only have FC pencils! I think I marginally prefer the soft edges of the velour.

Great stack of information for us all Emily, so thanks. I work with my paper laid horizontally, had no issues working that way, but have a small easel which I will now out to use and see if my work improves. I hope your wedding day is perfect.

I'm a hobby artist and a couple of years ago I tried to use pastel pencils. It was a disaster and I gave them to a friend. A couple of months ago, I came across Emily's RUclips video's and her tutorials/demonstrations were so good that I bought the pencils and the surfaces that she recommended and tried again. I followed her instructions and I produced an image of my dog that I am proud of. In my view, Emily is the Internet's go to teacher of pastels. Thanks Emily, for posting so many helpful videos.

I started with Emily 3 years ago and now take pet portraits commissions as well as local exhibitions. Emily is a brilliant teacher!

I put my large paintings in pillowcases and pin an identification tag on the side

Just an idea: an over the bed table (meant for handicapped ) are narrow and adjust quite high, perfect for drawing and then a small easel when painting...and it's on rollers and easy to ' put aside'
