  • I'm testing the cheap(er) Carbothello pastel pencils with the expensive Caran D'Ache pastel pencils.
So are the expensive Caran D'Ache pastel pencils really worth it? I was suprised by both brands in this review!

Just wanted to say that's a Boston terrier not a French bulldog(frenchie). Nice video and review tho! I want to start working with the pastel charcoal pencils and your videos are really helpful.

Thank you for your review! I have been working in watercolor but have been thinking about pastels and didn’t know what to invest in. As I have learned with watercolors, there is a huge difference in brands and it has taken me a while to learn which colors I prefer in which brands. I love hearing “permission” to spend less and still get a quality I can learn to use.

    Great video!
Wish you could’ve had the 750 for a true comparison since their true black, as another previously mentioned.
Softer than CD and FC and similar darkness to FC, but CD is slightly darker of the three IMO.
Love the 770 for shadows and undertones (feel it gives a little more vibrancy/depth vs FC 181, although 181 is a little darker. The 760 is too greenish for my liking, although that sometimes has use)! The 770 & FC’s 175 dark sepia are my most used pencils.
    Keep up the great work!
I’d love to see another similar video!

This helped me a lot, thank you. How do sharpen the pencils, can you use a pencil sharpener?

I adore the CarbOthello pastel pencils. I have the Faber Castels and the Derwent, but the CarbOthello’s buttery texture is my favorite. 750 is the blackest black in the set. I think the 760 pencil is more of a indigo.

I have the full set of Faber Castell and 48 Stabilo Carbothello. What CD pencils would you recommend to supplement with the Caran Dache?

Thank you so much for this comparison, Emily. I have Derwent pastel pencils and wonder how they compare to these other brands. What are your thoughts on the Derwent pastel pencils? Have you tried them?

Hi, I’m not the biggest fan of Derwent overall, but they have a few great colours. I find them too chalky and ‘dusty’ so the details fade away as I work. However, for a few colours I would certainly use them 😊

@@emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820 I see. That's good to know. I might add a few carbothello pastel pencils to my collection and see which ones I prefer. Thanks!

This is good review, i am now learning to use paspen i prefer always FC when it comes to details and its hard but yes for colors and blending its Carbo i heard if you got a carandasche pastel broken you can do a replacement..

Yes I think I’d agree! FC are the most similar to a regular pencil so I think that’s why I like them for details. The carbothello set do offer a lot for their price 😊

    Hi Emily
I was interested in signing up for the pet portrait masterclass; I wanted to know if this class would also include the full-length online courses you already have. Also, I noticed the price is listed in pounds; how much will that be in US dollars?
    Thank you

    • @emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820
      @emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820  5 месяцев назад

Hi Rose, so the new pet portrait masterclass will be its own stand alone course. It’s still being made, but will include full length portrait drawings, special technique classes and advice for setting up as a pet portrait artist. When it’s ready to be released, they’ll be a lot more information about the details 😊
In terms of pounds to dollars, I’m not sure. I believe the exchange rate will be set by the payment system, so PayPal or your bank. 😊

Lamp black is not black, you are right. In the 19th century they used a kind of oil for their lamps which had a color between darkblue/black and dark grey. So this is why they call it lampblack and not black! Caran dáche I find the blackest black of all ranges and the azurite white is great for whiskers, the whitest white :) you did an excellent review, thank you!

Thanks so much for this! I shall have to get their neutral black and try it out. Totally agree that the Caran dache black is fab, it’s just so velvety dark 😊
